Months back Dave was seen rapping along to a Drill tune in Instagram and instantly everyone was talking about it. Dave has already had quite the year and the idea of him jumping on a beat which is arguably the sound of the U.K. right now, is outright exciting. After not hearing about it for some time and the Top Boy Soundtrack not having it as a feature, it was thought the track was never going to see the light of day…until now. Worth the wait? Absolutely. The beat hits so hard and Dave is iconic in his pauses throughout his flow, syncopating the rhythm. A catchy chorus in a true Dave style, produced by none other than Ghosty, who’s behind such tracks as ‘No Diet’ by Digga D. A combination that had to happen, now you have to listen.

Top Boy is back…and it’s about time too. After hearing the show was going to be cancelled after its second season, Mr. OVO himself was such a big fan of the show that he helped fund the return which can now be watched on Netflix. Drake is a well known fan of U.K. culture but this really goes to show how much of a fan he really is. The show, if you’ve never seen it before, is a real taste of what London can really be like and this new season features a lot of young, talented actors, as well as some recognisable faces such as Dave and Kano. So, it was only fitting that the soundtrack for the season features all the sounds of the streets of London too and it does not disappoint.

From a first look at the tracklist, only one song title is recognisable and that’s Drake’s ‘Behind Barz’ which he did for LinkUpTV back in 2018. Drake rapping on what can only be described as a U.K. Drill beat was one of the highlights of the year, so it definitely deserved to be amongst the rest of the soundtrack. The Album is filled with bangers that could only have come out of London, but these are the stand out tracks on a first listen…

Dave – Professor X

Many comments on the internet suggest people were hoping this was going to be the unreleased Drill track Dave previewed on his Instagram a while back, however it was not, it’s better. Classic Dave flows over a mysterious sounding beat is exactly what we needed. One thing about Dave is you can never be sure where the rhymes are going to land or what is coming next and this song is a huge demonstration of that.

Baka Not Nice – My Town (feat. Giggs)

A dark and dirty sounding track with another eerie chorus. Baka sounds both melodic and terrifying all in one verse and it works so well. As soon as you see featuring Giggs then you know the track is going to hit hard but this is one of Giggs’ best verses since his most recent album Big Bad. The delay and reverb effects used on his classic ad-libs make him sound even more bad than he normally does, which is hard to do.

AJ Tracey – Elastic

On LinkUpTV’s Instagram post of the tracklist for the Soundtrack, AJ Tracey wrote ‘Had to take it back to real Grime for this one. Only right’ and that is exactly what this track is. A classic Grime rhythm which is something AJ Tracey does best. His MC’ing skills are of a different class and this track is just as refreshing as it ought to be. After his recent success with his Garage-infused ‘Ladbroke Grove,’ it’s great to hear the independent Rapper spitting like this.

This Soundtrack really is a well crafted piece of work. Each track has its own identity but screams London, fitting so perfectly with the style of the show. Make sure to give it a full listen and watch the show; it’s London’s finest

Dave is one of those artists that you should be glad to be around to appreciate. His path to releasing Psychodrama has been experimental, thought through and monumental, with the finished product a full credit to the Dave himself.

Dave’s previous releases have been poetic and creative throughout, but when it comes to Psychodrama, you can really see the vision of the project as a whole whilst you listen throughout. One of Dave’s manager’s Jack Foster took to Instagram after the release to say “Dave is the living personification of dedication and I have no hesitation in stating he really made a classic album. It’s deeper than music.” Dave is a man who has worked solely on his craft to create a masterpiece.

Tracks like ‘Lesley’ and ‘Black’ take you on a real journey, making you genuinely think after listening. The poetic nature and incredible storytelling make an 11 minute song one of the most gripping to come from a U.K. rapper in years. Pyschodrama showcases the best of British Urban Culture and shows that talent beats hype every time. The album hit number 1 in its first week in the U.K. and has beaten the record for Most Album Streaks in week 1 for any debut album of all time & Highest week 1 album streams for a rapper of all time. The most deserving, humble man and the most deserving, brilliant album. Psychodrama.

Santan Dave or Dave for short, is not only quickly becoming the voice of the next generation of rap artists in the UK, but also becoming a radio favourite.

Born David Orobosa Omoregie in Brixton, South London, June ‘98 – Dave began writing music at an early age; working on lyrics during his early teens and starting production at 14 when his Mum gave him a piano. Just three years later in 2015, Dave made his first appearance on a platform named Blackbox where he appeared on a Mixtape Madness with the song ‘Mid Summer Night’, but his year didn’t stop there…

In the UK, if you want to be make it as a rapper, you’ve gotta get on the following: sb.tv, LinkUPtv & GRMDaily. When you get on one, you’ve got a shot of getting on one of the others, but realistically those YouTube channels are the stepping stones to truly launch an artist’s career. So, when Dave found himself stepping up for his turn at the infamous sb.tv ‘Warm Up Sessions’ in November that year, his path ahead began to unfold.

His debut release Six Paths came in September of 2016 and entered the UK Album charts at number 11. Pretty good for an 18 year old Rapper from arguably one of the dodgiest areas of London. So good, a certain Champagne Papi had his eye on the rising star’s release and signed a remix of his song ‘Wanna Know’ which hit number 51 in the UK Singles Charts. This was the first time I personally heard Santan’s name being thrown about properly on the Radio. I’d seen his Fire In The Booth back in May 2015 but this remix really catapulted Dave into the limelight…since then it’s been success after success. We’re talking about a man who is currently 20 years old and the last two songs he’s touched have been Top 10 hits. The last time the UK witnessed a similar sort of young success story was with Stormzy and he’s basically a national treasure now. Dave stands out, just like Stormzy did, because he has a very unique sound to most other UK rap artists. He signs, the beats are often slow and melodic & he’s a genuine storyteller when he wants to be, check out ‘My 19th Birthday’ or ‘How I Met My Ex’.

With Dave, every release is more notable than the last, but here’s a few that you simply have to listen to.

No Words

Off his Game Over’EP which dropped in November 2017, this song was a summer anthem which certified Dave’s place amongst the mainstream big hitters. Teaming up with MoStack, No Words’ was produced by Steel Banglez (who is responsible for a huge amount of the Dancehall/Grime bangers we have today) and with a line up like that, it’s no wonder it turned out to be his biggest charter at the time, making it to number 17 in the UK Singles Chart. I still hear it on the Radio now…

Samantha

This is my personal favourite. Featuring Dave on the keys, the beat is absolutely beautiful and is one of those songs that I just instantly fell for. With every Dave chorus, you know the lyrics are going to be easily memorable and fun to sing along to, he’s simply got it down & I think this is a prime example of exactly that. Featuring J Hus, who is currently behind bars, this song really is an ode to Dave’s talent.

Funky Friday

Number 1. Yeah that’s right. I saw the advert for the video for this song on Instagram about a week before it dropped and I remember thinking that it sounded hard then; it certainly did not disappoint. With his pal Fredo, this is without a doubt a heavy hitting grime track: the dark arpeggio, the 808s, the flows, its got it all. That makes this song the first ‘proper’ Grime track to ever hit number 1 in the UK Singles Chart. A huge hit and a great way to end his 2018.

Now if you missed last month’s edition of Across The Pond on Loski, you may have missed the fact Dave was also on Headie One’s recent Top 10 hit ‘18HUNNA’ which dropped in January 2019. Santan is on fire right now and he’s been hinting in interviews with Radio 1 following the success of ‘Funky Friday’, that his debut album should be expected early this year. So where is it?! All the elements are in place for this to be a number 1 album for the rising star & there really is no limit to how far he will go this year.
