Last year we claimed r/trap’s BOOST TAPE 01 was the pinnacle of trap. A bar set immensely high by impeccable curation and the mix of legends and rising stars involved. With their follow-up BOOST TAPE 02 the expectations couldn’t be much higher, but I can assure you it delivers. 28 tracks of relentless heat from the likes of Acrillics, camoufly, Chee, Chromonicci, Dabow, Deffie, episcool, Giraffage, Great Dane, Ivy Lab, LYNY, Machine Drum, MadBliss x Keeth, Oakk, Rome In Silver, Salva, Slumberjack x Ren Zukii, and somehow more. Once again the Boost Gang brings us some of the best trap, bass and club music that we’re destined to receive this year. From front to back the compilation slaps but we had to highlight a few of our favourites.

Kicking off the project comes Acrillics’ ‘What Do You Want.’ It’s no secret we’ve been longtime fans and supporters and it’s always great to see the duo making big moves. Serving as a perfect introduction, it starts as a slow burner with emotive undertones before unveiling a bass-leaning trap nature. Blending feels with aggressive and powerful energy makes this a can’t miss.

Chromonicci has become renowned for his diversity, from future beat finesse to lofi chill tunes and trap slaps, he can do it all. With ‘Singularity’ he finds a perfect fusion of off-kilter future beats and the chest-pounding energy of raw trap. It’s smooth yet, banging. Experimental but approachable and dare I say… smooth. In short, it’s spectacular.

The stash of unreleased heat that Dabow is sitting on right now is absolutely insane. Any time we get one of his highly sought-after IDs for release we relish it. ‘Poder’ has been a staple in Dabow sets and mixes so it’s great to finally get the proper release. From the bent vocal loops, to ice-cold keys and the blistering brass, this is trap music at its best. People really need to stop sleeping on Dabow’s greatness.

Possibly the biggest surprise on the tape is Giraffage’s’ ‘idgaf.’ Based around the vocal “I don’t give a fuck,” this is a blistering banger here to set speakers ablaze. Booming bass, precise vocals chops, and an almost absurd party vibe make it undeniably infectious. It’s the type of banger you could see getting spun out in trap or bass house sets or serving as the perfect bridge between the genres in a setlist. I didn’t know Giraffage went this hard.

Other mid-to-late tape standouts include Great Dane’s ‘aya hua’ which fuses tribal and spiritual energy with some serious bump, LYNY’s bossed-up anthem ‘Stumble,’ and RamonPang’s beastly ‘Santoor Unkown.’

Last but not least I have to highlight Rome In Silver’s ‘Little Demons.’ I’ve been waiting for this one to drop since I included it as an ID in my Electric Hawk Takover Mix in early 2020. Electric basslines, swooning vocals, crisp claps and a forward-thinking soundscape are expertly intertwined. The drops are funky and inviting while remaining mean. It exemplifies the exceptional balance that Rome In Silver has managed to master.

BOOST TAPE 02 is everything you wanted and more. Stream the full project below and be sure to grab it on Bandcamp.

Rising from the deep beneath are two extremely talented souls who put everything they have into their art. The combination of Keeth.’s impactful style with Deffie’s calming vibes is truly the power combo. Both of them compliment each other quite nicely in terms of arrangement, drum design and groove. These future beat legends are no doubt some intricate thinkers. We highly recommend on checking out their past work to get a sense on what they’re all about. You won’t regret it.

‘SCUBA’ has many soft and impactful qualities to it. From the addicting rhythm and powerful drums, to the profound bass lead in the second portion, they made sure to give their listeners an experience to remember. Every section will have you hypnotized and wanting more. Their dynamic in controlling frequencies in unmatched. No matter where you are, this song will put you in a calming stasis. Becoming one with their creativity.

Inspiration is sometimes hard to come by these days. But gems like this can immediately turn the feeling of hopelessness into a positive strive to keep going. Make sure to go support these two by streaming ‘SCUBA.’ We’re excited to see and hear where their paths take them.

When Lucid Monday drops a compilation you stop what you’re doing and listen. Those are the rules. I didn’t make them, but I am here to enforce them. The label has become renowned in the underground community for their absolutely stacked releases and their latest LM024 is no anomaly. With15 tracks, there’s a little bit of everything, from vibey head-nodders, to mellow grooves, and of course brutal bangers. This truly deserves a spin from front to back but if you’re looking for a few standouts, you know we got you.

ini & Dilip do not disappoint with ‘Elements.’ The track fuses foreign film soundscapes, with heavy knock and sprinkles of grime for a feel that’s foreign but right at home. Following their last Lucid Monday release a few months back it seems Losco is really back! This time they link with young trap king in the making LYNY. To label this a banger is an understatement. Dope rap samples, hypnotic synths and drops that feel like getting drop kicked in the chest, what more could you ask for? olswel keeps it ‘positive’ with his contribution, pairing off-kilter bounce with a moving break and ride out. Further along L*o*J flex their exotic trap mastery for a sound that feels like the anthem for a Pharaoh’s coronation party. Looking to get dragged into the darkess? aedfx. and godspeed have your number. Rounding out the can’t miss selections is Deffie & Keeth’s ‘Another One’ which is like getting turnt in the renaissance era with a futuristic twist.

With compilations like this, it seems it’s due time we start looking forward to Mondays.

One of SoundCloud’s beatmaking all-stars put forth his magnum opus on Bandcamp yesterday. TEK.LUN‘s album, aptly titled The Oppression Olympics, explores imaginative storytelling techniques (comparable to Carmack’s Rekindling EP) that employ music as a vehicle to deliver messaging that can’t be completely captured in mere words or colorful drum loops. The spectacular project draws from raw samples of the George Floyd protests, free-thinkers, and traditional soulful vocals that pay homage to the cultural roots of popular music. TEK.LUN intelligently weaves this collection of sounds through a brilliant exhibition of his unmistakable production style, pushing the status quo for both genre and emotional experience in the same forward-thinking project.

[bandcamp width=400 height=300 album=124765922 size=large bgcol=181a1b linkcol=056cc4 artwork=small]

Whether it’s the album’s unattainable swing, soul stirring keys, harrowing orchestrations or demonstrative arrangements, The Oppression Olympics defies conventional methods of social activism. Best observed in tracks like ‘Required Chaos II’, ‘U BEN LIED 2 + Never Know (Feat. Varth)’ and ‘Y’all Need to Listen (QUIT YOUR JOB!)’, the project speaks to reality on multiple levels. It whispers the sentiments of racial division, solicits emotional awareness, and scores the intolerance of the modern political climate through mature cognizance. It also fucking slaps, and challenges you entertain new kinds of multi-dimensional thinking.

The project was released on Juneteenth, a celebration of the overdue emancipation of slaves, alongside the POWER BLACK compilation featuring the dexterity of acclaimed black beatmakers including DEFFIE, KAELIN ELLIS, whereisalex, Oshi, jammvis, eu-IV, Kilamanzego and TEK.LUN himself. These creators have dedicated all profits from the sales of both projects towards the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and other organizations supporting the movement. The Oppression Olympics can only be understood through experience, so I’ll leave you with TEK.LUN’s own words about the album and some of my own encouragement: open your mind, your heart, your wallet, and explore ways to help guide the world into a better future for all.

The Oppression Olympics is an instrumental album centered around the divides within the Black community that keep the diaspora from unifying in its totality. Our Black voices are reaching parts of the globe they have never reached before and I could not think of a better time to share this than on Juneteenth, 2020.

I began working on this “idea” back in 2016, inspired by the Audre Lorde poem “There is No Hierarchy of Oppression.” I will again go broke donating a majority of the proceeds from this to various organizations geared toward mental health for black women + a few other foundations I’m currently verifying. Each song has a purpose and I hope you guys enjoy. Thanks for listening!

Love ya
– TEK.LUN

LA based producer DEFFIE is back with another big tune. ‘Outrun’ is a futuristic trap number that’s ripe with progression. Opening with ghostly vocal chops, it’s soon warmed with shimmering synths. As a catchy vocal comes through inviting you to “do that Lucy Liu’ you can’t help but smile. The sound then drops into a more rugged motif, underlined by ragged bass. The grittiness is then stripped away leaving ‘Outrun’ exploring a dreamy club aesthetic. Just as you become comfy within fairytale, that distorted bass finds its way back in. ‘Outrun’ takes listeners on a journey that’s part dirty and part picturesque. What more could you desire? Stream below.
