The presentation surrounding Melt My Eyez See Your Future flips through images like a Rolodex. Following Denzel Curry throughout his search for a sanctuary. Often the strongest characters have a comprehensive skill set, never limiting themselves to being a master of one combat style. His eccentric personality, raspy delivery, and energy have been his weapon of choice for years. Yet this time, he leaves those skills behind to bring something else to aid him in his battle, directness.

At its core, Melt My Eyez See Your Future is Denzel wandering in a desert. It’s faint and spacious, mirroring the album’s precise drums, airy chords, and vocals that sound like hallucinations. Denzel’s delivery morphs into whatever weapon is needed. On ‘Walkin’, he toys with his inflections, weaving transitional phrases between rhyme schemes at a measured pace. Once the beat switch comes, his energy hits back to back like a John Silver hot tag. Teetering his voice between logic and emotions, all he wants to do is be better, feel better, and he can only do that with constant movement.

But deserts are more than their harsh conditions. You could go anywhere, everywhere, and nowhere all at once, testing the traveler’s discipline and endurance. In interviews, Denzel understood that there would be nowhere to hide with a record as personal as this one. “Ultimately, this album is about me, Denzel Curry.” Denzel Curry, the person is fascinating, but will the fans love him? The cool factor is the confidence that spills out from press photos and videos; it’s all Denzel. The Dollars Trilogy and Star War references, the homage to Akira Kurosawa’s directing style is all genuine interest of the man before us. He’s more like us than he even thought, so why hide it?

Throughout the album, his tone is subdued-as if he’s meditating-speaking to himself, yet his presence is forceful. Every action is down in a trot, unpacking his emotions as he strolls forward at his past. On ‘Aint No Way’ featuring the talented Rico Nasty, 6LACK, and J.I.D, the production starts with swirling vocals and synths, while the drums power up every 4 bars as Rico spazzes. A subtle beat switch cools it down to a more chord-driven and boom-bap lead production, abling Denzel to brisk while his peers ran. Even when everyone around him picks up in pace, he refuses to rush. His slowed rapping style he displayed left room for his lyrics to fill up the space instead of the energy his past personas would rely on. “Run the jewels ’cause I kill a mic on any LP,” is fucking crazy, and Curry delivered like he knew it was.

Like the video for his standout track ‘Walkin’ or the dizzying camera movements in ‘Zatoichi,’ mobility and admission are constant themes of the album. “I’m the nigga walkin’ through the mist/Still reportin’ live from the depths of the abyss,” Denzel raps on ‘Sanjuro.’ He pushes forward while advising those around him of the horrors he’s seen along the way. “An epic battle where evil and the will to evolve is what I’m involved in/Hey God, is Earth gon’ keep revolvin’?” He vents in ‘Worst Comes To Worst’ on the current state of affairs worldwide. The slick inner rhyme scheme and inflection of the vowels make it flow seamlessly. Fluid in delivery and mind, he refuses to be stagnant.

However, the mass of drums and the texture wear on you throughout the journey as the album progresses. Neo-soul and jazz-inspired production laced with background vocals make for a pleasing listen. The intro track ‘Melt Sessions #1″ is delicate, with pitched-up vocals cooing behind creamy chords and drums that pelt the soundscape like a leaf scathing the concrete. The album’s standout track ‘X-Wing’ is lush. Ghost notes from the high hats are tucked behind a riveting violin sample and spine chilling bells. It’s a departure from where the album started and highlights one of its metaphors: acceptance. The travel is taking its toll, weighing on him more the longer he goes, yet he’s more confident than ever. The baggage he carries with him is stout, eternal, and wintry, but the journey would have been incomplete with it.

Yet there are instances where Denzel stumbles to provide a precise picture of his pain. Despite his intentions, we don’t get enough of what ails him at specific points. ‘John Wayne’ is a royal rumble for your attention mixing-wise. The sound effects take your attention away from the exciting music behind it. The ditzy T-Pain collab ‘Trouble’ is fun despite its vagueness. As soon as Denzel builds upon his flow and energy, it’s the chorus. All you come out with is how Denzel is back home with his mom, mismanaging his finances (he’s just like me for real), and driving around in his mother’s car.

Storytelling is limited throughout the album, settling for more of a conversational tone around his day-to-day observations. While far from an album killer, expanding on ideas and attacking them from different angles would have helped. Like in ‘Worst Of The Worst’ the first verse lays out questions, and the second provides answers he ends up regretting asking for. More creativity in packaging his feelings like this would help.

But the album is at its best when he takes time to set his emotions, vices, success, and failures before him as he continues to move forward. From the production to the lyrics to its themes, its openness is breadth and refreshing. He is comfortable enough to cry and blur his vision, turning his tears into mirrors as self-reflects upon the distance traveled. It’s an emotional transaction- a physiological response to a psychological ideology- the past doesn’t have to disrupt the now or the future. It’s not perfect, but it’s honest.

Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats are back at it again with UNLOCKED 1.5. For the second-ish iteration of this joint album, you can expect huge features from the likes of Smino, Joey Bada$$, Sango, and more. If UNLOCKED wasn’t iconic enough, this version of remixes will change your life.

The first album was full of hard classic rap beats and flows but UNLOCKED 1.5 is all about the vibes. It starts off with Robert Glass and Smino giving their R&B take on ‘So.Incredible.pkg.’ Robert Glass’s vocal-heavy production was the perfect match for Smino’s smooth bars, giving just the right balance to Denzel’s more aggressive style.

Sángo also adds his soulful stamp to ‘Pyro,’ now featuring Atlanta legend, Kenny Mason. Curry’s raps over the Soulection producer’s beats create such a unique contrast. Kenny Mason joins the two for a verse, landing exquisitely-rhymed punches.

Another name we’ve been watching closely is Jay Versace. We were hyped to see him on this album as he remixes ‘Lay_Up.mp4a.’ The beatmaker is known for getting inspiration from his ancestral roots and creating musical conversations through his music. His rendition of the track utilizes haunting soundscapes to form a framework for Denzel Curry’s storytelling.

We can’t go without mentioning ‘DIET_1.5’ with Benny The Butcher. The track is the only one on UNLOCKED 1.5 that doesn’t feature a new beat, but instead, the Griselda rapper takes on the first verse, referencing current events and applying acute wordplay to share his experience in the rap game.

But there’s more where that came from. Listen to the full Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats – UNLOCKED 1.5 below.

Four years after the first release of ‘Bruuuh,’ JID enlists Denzel Curry for the track’s remix. 2020 was a huge year for both of the rappers. JID released Spilligion with his collective, Spillage Village, and Denzel dropped UNLOCKED with Kenny Beats. So we were hype to see these two reunite for the ‘Bruuuh’ remix.

The last time the artists were seen on a track together was back in 2018 with ‘SIRENS | Z1RENZ,’ Curry’s melodic narrative on the state of America. But it seems they’ve stayed close ever since. The ‘Bruuuh’ Remix has actually been in the works for quite a while. In March of last year, JID posted a picture of the two on Instagram with the caption “This n**** Denzel one of the most genuine people I ever met… (I should prolly drop Bruuuh Remix huh?)”

Both of them have been in the rap game for a minute, and don’t hesitate to flex their place at the top in ‘Bruuuh.’ JID starts off the song hard with, “The maddest, blackest lad in a savage land/ Of grab and dash and crash in your daddy’s van/ D-D-D, d-d, bad as the most having-est/ Most swaggiest, braggy as never had anything/ So I’m mackin’ as if I never had shit.” Denzel then adds his impeccable flow to the beat, spitting, “So many y’alls/ I’m bored, there’s too many yawns/ I got a lot of green, it’s too many lawns/ I’m still hot ’til I set in the dawn, until a n**** rockin’ Saint Laurent.”

And we have to agree with Denzel when he says, “We go together like Harry and Ron.” When the two team up, it’s always fucking magic. Check out JID and Denzel Curry on the ‘Bruuuh’ (Remix) below.

This time he teams up with Miami native Denzel Curry, who rose to stardom on Soundcloud in 2013 with his debut project N64 which featured his hit single ’Threatz.’ Since then, the lyrical genius has grown into a respected world-touring artist, so it’s no surprise to see him team up with one of the most respected producers in the game to give us the UNLOCKED EP.

Birthed out of a 24-hour manic studio session, UNLOCKED is a testament to these twos’ musical ability. Let Denzel teach you lyrical lessons behind a spastic Kenny beat filled with saturated basses and creative vocal modulation on ‘DIET_’. Take a seat while Curry delivers world-class lyrics with a cadence that is next to none behind an aggressive 808-heavy beat on ’Take_it_Back_v2’. There’s a track for all fans of hip-hop on this project, which yet again shows that there is no stopping mister Kenny Beats. Stream it now down below!

The latest to catch our ear is San Diego based producer jordnmoody. He first caught our ear with his A$AP Ferg bootleg, and we’ve been locked in ever since. Today we have the pleasure of premiering his latest bootleg, a flip of Denzel Curry’s ‘Hate Government.’ The rework sees jorndmoody building upon the raw and aggressive energy and expanding it into a darker and weirder direction. The track is reflective of jordnmoody’s outlook on music, “I just want people to be turned on to new sounds… ideas… and realize it’s okay to make ‘weird shit’. People are always saying electronic music needs a ‘re-start’ but I feel like the only way to get there is by producers digging deeper and pushing the envelope instead of caving in to what sells. Make what’s cool to YOU instead of what you think will be cool to others. We’re all unique weirdos in our own way so why not capitalize on it right?” He’s definitely capitalizing on it with ‘Hate Government’. It’s weird, wild and hard-hitting. If you like your music raw AF, this is for you. Stream below and grab that free download.

Ekali & Denzel Curry’s ‘Babylon’ is an absolute monster. Remixing a track of this magnitude is no easy feat, but Ekali found a few producers that are more than up to the task. The official remix pack features 3 collaborative reworks. Kicking things off is Skrillex and Ronny J’s rendition. This one stays truest to the original, perfectly balancing Denzel’s…

Remixing a track of this magnitude is no easy feat, but Ekali found a few producers that are more than up to the task. The official remix pack features 3 collaborative reworks. Kicking things off is Skrillex and Ronny J’s rendition. This one stays truest to the original, perfectly balancing Denzel’s vocals with some even more intense energy. I didn’t think it was possible, but this remix is even harder and darker than the OG. sober rob & oshi completely flip the vibe with their take. The beat and backdrop is smooth and elegant. It feels like riding though Central Park in a horse drawn carriage on the first snowfall of the season. But that’s just the beat. The aggressive in your face lyrics and delivery from Denzel are still there providing a stark juxtaposition that somehow works so well. Rounding things out comes X&G and josh pan’s flip. As expected it’s the wildest and weirdest of the bunch. What start out tranquil and vibe-laden goes completely off the deep end. One minute they’re hitting you with club inspired vocal chops, the next you’re straight into the jungle with tribal drums beating harder than you heart when you’re standing next to a lion. So it’s not surprising that when Ekali announced he was working with Denzel Curry it set the internet on fire. After much anticipation their collaboration has finally arrived. ‘Babylon’ see the pair doing what they do best. Ekali crafts a soundscape that moves between melancholy and straight snapping. Ravenous bass lines underscore Denzel’s early presence. As Denzel begins his rapid-fire flow, Ekali keeps pace with visceral and banging tapestries. The midpoint break is regal and reflective making the the returning intensity that much more insane.
