At this point, what can Nitti Gritti not do? He’s already taken the bass scene by storm starting with his breakout single ‘Crack’ and since then has seen his career grow in ways never imaginable, collaborating with some of the biggest names in not just dance music but music, period. He even won a Grammy for his work on Latin trap king Bad Bunny’s album, more specifically the track ’200 MPH’. Now the young legend has teamed up with one trap’s most respected names in Party Favor, to explore the realm of house music with their new project SIDEPIECE. With one release under their belt, they team up with multifaceted Grammy award-winning dance producer Diplo with ‘On My Mind’.

The track begins with a booming four on the floor drum arrangement which carries the grove throughout. One by one we’re introduced to different elements of the track starting with the underlying funky bass melody, moving onto a heavily distorted synth making brief appearances giving the record some grit. After this section, we’re introduced to the hypnotic lead vocal which is sure to be on your mind after one listen. Overall, this track further proves the versatility of these three producers, who have virtually achieved artistic freedom with their music and their audiences.

Now that Diplo has his new house imprint, Higher Ground, he has teamed up with up-and-coming French DJ and producer, Born Dirty (Mika Abadie), to bring us a manifestation of Brazil’s music history in modern, electric terms: ‘Samba Sujo.’

If you do not speak Brazilian Portuguese and are too lazy to find a translation app, the title means ‘Dirty Samba.’ Samba is a style of music and dance that originates in Brazil and is celebrated all over the world. The original sample of ‘Samba Sujo’ is one of the most famous samba songs to come out of Brazil, ‘Magalenha’ by Sergio Mendes featuring vocals from Carlinhos Brown. The track was originally released in 1992 and quickly became both a dance and fixture of Carnival.

Diplo and Born Diity’s infuse this already lively song with modern electricity. Using most of the first verse of the original, they tighten up the track, bringing in more of a sound palette to build suspense and flesh out the bass line. With a more succinct iteration of the vocal sample, they are able to delve deeper into the groove of the song. These talented producers pick up the pace with modern ambient bass back drops but stay true to the Afro-Brazilian drums. There is also a quirky, squeaky noise that loops in and out keeping the tone light, silly, and free- very much the vibe of Carnival. There are a few drops drizzled through out that soak up plenty of tension from the layers of bass, dramatic pauses, and clusters of the vibrant vocals. It’s a delicious track, blossoming with soul, and irresistible to dance to.

Check it out below.

Back in 2013 GTA & Diplo collided for the Missy Elliot sampling slapper ‘Boy Oh Boy.’ The track lived on to become an anthem that could still slay sets to this day. Despite the years past, their chemistry hasn’t subsided as they team up for a fresh banger entitled ‘Milky Cabrera.’ The absurd smash is a certified home run. The track kicks off with a vocal sample of Diplo talking in the studio. The beat is stripped away as he beat boxes before an absurd hook rolls in and things begin to build. When the drop hits it’s a wild time with pitched vocals, pounding kicks and some crazy chops. The chest pounding energy is assured to have you shuffling like a maniac. In typical GTA fashion they strip things down for another break before freaking things even further to close it out. ‘Milky Cabrera’ is ridiculously fun and stupid catchy with top-tier production to back it. Stream below.

From club banger to summer bop, the talented artist has the Midas touch when it comes to making a four-on-the-floor beat that’s catchy for all. Today, he joins forces with Mad Decent label boss Diplo in a clash of two titans to deliver a new single from his upcoming House Party EP titled ‘JustYourSoul.’

Diplo has also been leaning towards house in his latest releases, so the joining of these two forces comes as no big surprise. In ‘JustYourSoul,’ the two explore a funky new take on house music through its melodic grooves, quintessential punchy beat, and dancefloor-friendly vocals. Although never really peaking in energy, ‘JustYourSoul’ also never lets up on the groove, creating a summer-ready vibe that holds straight until the very end. This one is a crowd-pleaser and will be a hit on the dance floor from the club to the festival stage. Don’t miss it below!

“I was stoked to work on this track with TWERL as we’ve had a great workflow this year with our past two releases.”

The two artists have worked together before, namely with the track ‘Wasted Time‘. Their take on ‘Color Blind’ retains Xan’s lyrics, making it perfect for singing purposes. It also brings together elements found in each artist’s general style(s), one example being Styler’s use of wavy synths in the past, which are most prevalent during the drops of this remix. (This is but a speculation, though.)

The overall product is an atmosphere which feels and holds on to the original’s uplifting & light-hearted nature, and gives it a bouncier twist, complemented by a heavier bassline. The ‘Color Blind’ remix is part of Diplo’s California (Remixes) pack, out now via Mad Decent/Columbia Records.

At this point in his career, Diplo can really do whatever the fuck he wants. He’s won. But what would be a genius without new innovations? With the release of his new EP, California, Diplo reinforces that genius by showing that electronic music isn’t all about the big drops and genre-bending new wave music, sometimes all a song needs is good, clean production.

Diplo is one of the very few producers who can jump from genre to genre and actually find a home in that sound. Too frequently producers try out a new sound and it just falls flat, either clunky and uncomfortable or unoriginal to the point that it is boring. Diplo is able to rise above that as showcased on California. The predominantly hip-hop and rap-influenced EP is full of big names such as Desiigner, Lil Yachty, and Santigold, each song incorporating Diplo’s unique ability to adapt to each artist. ‘Worry No More’ captures both Santigold and Lil Yachty’s carefree vibes, creating a song that calls for a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway with the top down. Desiigner, backed by Diplo’s tropical beats, softly sings about having some dark thoughts on ‘Suicidal.’ It’s like the come down at a party, still having fun but starting to wonder when it got to be 4 am.

While each song on the EP is a standout, the dramatic ‘Look Back’ with DRAM is the star. Having been released last month, it’s not a surprise but it still resonates. DRAM’s voice soars with a heavy, melodic beat that gives a sense of vulnerability that transforms into invincibility. Tinged with gospel, RnB, and indie rock influences, perfectly operating in tandem as the song swells to DRAM’s final cry of “You know I haven’t looked back” only to quickly filter out, like a wind-up toy finally coming to a stop. Diplo has had a lot of hits, but ‘Look Down’ will go down as one of Diplo’s greatest.

California displays Diplo at his finest, forcing him to completely step into hip-hop rather than sitting on the outskirts. He creates a different sound and vibe for every track, making it almost impossible to choose just one favorite. The only thing that is 100% certain, with the last bits of Diplo’s latest mega-hit ‘Get it Right’ in our headphones: Diplo still remains a king.

This past Friday Diplo rolled through Toronto for his annual Mad Decent Block Party. Taking place at Fort York the festival line-up was mixture of rising new stars and OGs. On the sunny Friday afternoon I took a trip down to revel in the annual excitement. After a thorough pat down and search I was let into the familiar world of MDBP. Along the right of the entry were rows of food trucks offering everything from wood oven pizza, to burritos, burgers, ice cream and more. There was more than enough food options to make skipping dinner with plans to eat there a solid choice. With Bud Light as a main sponsor it meant beer drinkers had one choice…Bud Light. While I understand the importance of corporate sponsorships I could’ve at least gone for a Budweiser or even a Bug Light Platinum (if that’s still a thing?). Other drink options included cider and your standard mixed drinks. After grabbing a beer and some food I headed into the action to catch Slushii heating up the party. Despite it being early in the day the young DJ had a solid sized crowd with great energy. His set consisted of smash hits (‘All I Do Is Win,’ ‘I Can’t Stop’,) dirty dubstep and some tracks that blended both (a nasty ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ remix).

Louis the Child

As Slushii’s set came to a close Louis The Child came on for a stellar set. The blend of future pop, future bass and touch of trap made for the perfect early evening programming. It was upbeat, embodying the summer weather with just enough hard hitting bangers. The QUIX remix of ‘After Hours’ was especially viscous while Lambo’s flip of Drake’s ‘Controlla’ had everyone singing along. The combination of great selection and energy made Louis The Child a surprise standout.

Grandtheft

Next up came one of Canada’s finest – Grandtheft. I’ve seen Grandtheft 8-10 times and have never been disappointed or tired of his sets. Although the set begin with some sound issues they were easily forgotten as he delivered the most impressive set of the evening. His ability to move between genres and stellar selection gave fans everything from trap classics like ‘Roll Up,’ to rap hits like ‘No Problem,’ and ‘Antidote’ and next level turnt anthems (think Herobust). From beginning to end Grandtheft rocked the crowd and impressed all.

NGHTMRE x Slander

NGHTMRE x Slander

NGHTMRE and Slander were up next for a 3 man b2b. They came out hard and kept the energy throughout. They had the crowd jumping on every drop and screaming for more on the builds. Their choice to mix in rock ballads and hip-hop classics seemed a bit disjointed to me but fans didn’t seem notice, eating it up and singing along at the top of their lungs. I can front, I got pretty into singing along to ‘Just A Friend’ too. By then the event was filling in heavy but thankfully beer lines never got out control, pointing to better organization than previous years.

Marshmello

Right before the finale from Mr. Mad Decent himself, came a set from marshmello, which prompted me to wonder how the hell an artist who’s existed for less than a year could land such a lucrative spot. After taking a look round and seeing the vast number of people rocking marshmello gear, from tees to home made marshmello helmets it was apparent his popularity is at it’s peak. Going into the set I didn’t have high expectations, writing him off as a shitty gimmick. His visuals of a dancing marshmello didn’t help his case but as the show progressed and the marshmello (in his visuals) began to get roasted I smiled and realized there’s an element of humor and ridiculousness that softened my hate. Sure some of his set was generic as possible future bass but he also mixed in some killer dubstep and trap bangers that made me wonder why I was hating on marshmello in the first. Sure it’s a gimmick, but he knows it, embraces and actually delivers beyond expectations.

Diplo

As the night drew to its climax it was time for Diplo to takeover Toronto. Diplo did what he does, delivering a set that rocked the crowd and was an undeniable highlight. At this point Diplo’s DJ sets almost feel like a victory lap. There’s nothing left for him to prove and he’s out to have as much fun as the fans are. That said, I’ve never had less than an awesome time at a Diplo show. He gives the people what they want while keeping the energy flowing. Whether it’s anthems from his deep catalog, Drake smashes or straight bangers, he had the crowd in the palm of his hand throughout. He jumped on the mic several times to further build excitement and reiterated that Toronto was his favourite (although he probably says that to every <del>girl</del> city). Despite all that, I would’ve loved to see him take a few more risks and play something really unique, it just felt a little to safe for a guy who incited mosh pits in the same space just a few years prior during the Full Flex tour. In the end, Block Party proved why it’s a mainstay in Toronto’s festival circuit and has me looking forward to next year.

Released today, the project features some of the best producers out right now including Wiwek, Gravez, Ekali, Oshi, Malaa, Basecamp & Happy Colours. Oh and don’t forget vocalist Mark Johns. The diversity of sounds across this project is a testament to each artists creativity. You can bump every versions back to back without getting bored or it feeling redundant and that says something. It’s too early to pick a favorite but every one is sounding awesome. The cherry on top of this release is the fact that it’s a free download. Happy Friday!
