There’s not a more compelling story than when Tinaturnup, the supposed 17-year old club prodigy from Denmark was revealed to be the brainchild of DJ Sliink and Nadus, two of the pioneers of Jersey Club. Nadus even expressed that using the Tinaturnup moniker was when he received the most recognition and outreach. This was 7 years ago. We have to do better.

I still never got more music work offers than that two weeks of emails. Everyone wanted to toss us coin and work when they thought two niggas from Newark were a white chick from Denmark. https://t.co/hHapSNNId2

— Nadus (@Nadus) June 3, 2020

While the story came to the forefront again in the peak of the Black Lives Matter movement back in June 2020, the secret had already been out since at least 2016. The two things we can learn from this? 1) Anonymity does work as marketing. And 2) Racism is still rampant in the music industry.

While we’re always working towards a more progressive and inclusive community, we have to acknowledge this as proof: If you’re white in EDM, it’s easier for you to succeed. Honestly, it feels weird that the first time we’re posting about either DJ Sliink and Nadus in years is because of Tinaturnup. But we thought this story was worthwhile sharing.

If i ghost produced for some random dude in EU… yall would flock… we proved it once with Tina Turntup..

— Nadus (@Nadus) November 1, 2016

On a lighter note, the music “Tinaturnup” made banged. It was hard for me to choose a bootleg for #tbt‘s first edition of the year, but I couldn’t pass on babygirl Aaliyah. This ‘Rock The Boat’ remix flaunts Jersey Club’s signature bed squeaks, bouncey drums, and syncopated claps to make this R&B classic even sexier. We didn’t even know that was possible.

This is an ill new original from the artists. ‘Saint Laurent’ is a genre bender that sees elements of rap and trap sprinkled in with some heavy Jersey club influence. Wale’s vocals provide an anthematic air before they get chopped and looped over some banging kicks on some true Jersey shit. The break brings in a bass heavy trap vibe before more chops bleed into an even more massive drop. Expect this getting major plays moving forward.

As 2016 draws to a close you know we had to end the year by highlighting the best songs of 2016. As you’ve come to expect, this year’s list contains a broad array of musical styles and genres. We’ve got everything from ignorant turn-up bangers to though-provoking, socially conscious hip hop and everything in between. The countdown continues today with 40-31 and will continue throughout the week, ending on Friday. Check out our selects below and be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

40. Marshmello – Alone

Marshmello is the mystery man of 2016. His identity remains a mystery, even after the whole Tiesto prank, but what isn’t unclear is how much fun he must be having with us. Music fans were delighted and found Marhsmello’s single “Alone” a perfect follow up from his remixes of Jack Ü and Zedd which gave him his first international attention. Many suspect Marshmello is actually Dj Chris Comstock, but with fresh beats and killer mixes who really cares what’s under that big, blank, mello stare?

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/264023874″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

39. NGHTMRE – Burn Out

NGHTMRE’s dark wizardry soaks through this spacey track. The key board synthetics and snappy snares merge into one wave. Cresting with a mane of white foam the melody rushes to the drop. At the shore of NGHTMRE’s ‘Burn Out’ the percussion’s currents meet and there is another frothy hit. NGHTMRE has been cruising through the masses being it down at each of his touring stops. You might have seen him at Safe in Sound 2016, or you might still have a change during his current trek across the US and Australia which will in end in February. ‘Burn Out” is a great example of his attention to detail in his music, unique choice of sound, and his ability to create a disturbingly good beat.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/245105721″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

38. 21 Savage – X (Ft. Future)

21 Savage had a great 2016. The Atlanta rapper found success with his collaborative album Savage Mode featuring Metro Boomin and secured himself a spot on the XXL Freshman list. Linking up with the monster that is Future, 21 Savage goes in on his ex-girlfriends and openly stunts on them all. Lines like “hit her with no condom, had to make her eat a Plan B” live up to the rappers name and though they’re borderline cringe worthy they are also a part of the reason so many people fuck with him. 21 coming in at number 38.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/273828810″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

37. D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty – Broccoli

“Hey lil’ mama, would you like to be my sunshine, n*gga tough my gang we gon’ turn this shit to Columbine” – lyrics heard around the world. D.R.A.M. hit big last year with his joint ‘Cha Cha’ and this year he continued to stay on top with his Lil Yachty collaboration. Lil Boat has been able to amass a loyal following for his take on the Migos flow and somewhat clever but mostly funny bars. ‘Broccoli’ was a big summer hit and rang out anytime it played at a club and hearing the Big Baby yell out how beyond the fuck shit he is easily became one of the biggest chants of the year.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/257659076″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

36. Young M.A. – Ooouuu

Young M.A. did her thing this year. Over an infectious beat M.A. spit her New York flow, rapping “Yo Eli why they testing me, like I don’t always keep the hammer next to me”. These two bars lead into the biggest ‘Ooouuu’ moment where any girl named Stephanie (who heard the song) probably hated. Credited with giving rise to the return of NY rap (alongside some others), Young M.A. continues to heat the streets up with freestyles and new joints but its safe to say ‘Ooouuu’ was her best to date.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/262375023″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

35. GTA x Vince Staples – Little Bit Of This

GTA’s Death To Genres mantra has helped to serve as the gospel for breaking down barriers in music. Their debut album embodied this to fullest extent with one track taking it to the next level. Connecting with Mr. Feature (Vince Staples) they cooked up the insane ‘Little Bit Of This’. The track blends weird nature samples, squealing tires, deep bass and a trippy as fuck loops, for a sound that is unlike anything else. And that’s without even mentioning the stellar bars from Vince Staples. Over this mind-bending beat, Vince does what he does best, be himself. From street tales, to smirk inducing bars this is Vince Staples at his finest.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/283047258″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

34. Major Lazer – Cold Water

Major Lazer is still producing hits and partnering with songbirds from every continent and genre in music. ‘Cold Water’ was 2016’s concoction of pure pop-melodies and bass music’s sassy electric modernity. With over 99 million views on the music video for ‘Cold Water’ on their official YouTube channel, Major Lazer’s staying ability is unquestionable. Both vocalists on this track, Justin Bieber and MO, release the lyrics echoing the same island feel that the beat carries, bringing it in with everything but steel drums in true MJ fashion. This catchy jam was Major Lazer’s hit of this year, and the world can look forward to more of their music and performances in 2017. They have dates booked in Jamaica, France, Germany, Mexico- everywhere.

33. Kid Cudi – Surfin’

What happens when Kid Cudi and Pharrell link up? You get a feel good song that motivates you to “do your thing”. ‘Surfin’ encourages everyone to ride their own waves rather than others. Skateboard P brings some of his ‘Happy’ magic to the track by giving it that extra oomph that makes the track stand out against other pop tunes. With Kid Cudi battling his depression, this song serves as a reminder that not only is he a dope artist but he’s realized that he needs to and can be great on his own.

32. Dj Sliink – Higher

Ever wondered what would happen if the Jersey Club King connected with the hype man of the century? Thankfully this year we got to find when DJ Sliink connected with the legendary Fatman Scoop. ‘Higher’ is a record of epic proportions. It’s a perfect blend of Sliink’s signature trap meets club sound. The war ready brass and Fatman Scoop’s intensity collide for the “I Don’t Give A Fuck” anthem of the year. Whether you’re at the club, at work, at school or online, it’s difficult to listen to this without throwing your middle finger up and screaming “I don’t give a fuck.” The video only furthered the impact of this record, taking fans to Jersey and reminding them Jersey still got this.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/252028863″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

31. TroyBoi – Mantra

TroyBoi’s ability to blend world music with his bass heavy trap leanings has made him one of the most highly regarded producers out. On ‘Mantra’ TroyBoi takes this talent to another level. Weaving crystal bowl reverberations and entrancing exotic vocals with snapping drums and chest-pounding bass, TroyBoi takes you to another dimension. This is dancing naked under a blood moon while achieving spiritual enlightenment. The track also served as the namesake and theme song for his debut, all original world tour. A massive milestone in his continually building career.

DJ Sliink has been a staple in the scene for years. Sliink set the world on fire back in 2012 when connected with Flosstradamus for ‘Test Me’. He was a key figure in the trap movement and is the self-proclaimed Jersey club king. His ability to move between the two genres has helped to bring both sounds to a larger audience around the globe. As Jersey club exploded on a global scale in 2014, he served as the genre’s ambassador. Sliink continues to push the genre forward, blending it with unique sounds and influences to keep things fresh. Earlier this year he joined the ranks of Skrillex’s OWSLA label, dropping one of the hottest records of the year with Fatman Scoop in ‘Higher.’ We had the honour of connecting with Sliink for an exclusive interview to discuss the progression of Jersey club, his relationship with OWSLA and the surprising places music has taken him. Check out the interview below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/252028863″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Jersey Club has gone through an interesting progression over the past few years. It moved from being a regional sound, to one of the hottest genres out. In recent time it seems some of the hype has worn off. What are your thoughts on the evolution of the genre over the past few years?

Jersey club has been around for decades. In Jersey we still treat it like it’s new. When the internet got a hold of it everyone went wild. You know how the internet is, they get tired of things and look for the next wave. They don’t have the education so they wouldn’t know the importance of it all. I kind of liked that other people took interest into the genre. It was cool to see what they could do with it. That also made it commercial a bit. Where I am with the genre now is, I’m working with actual artists along with the sound. It’s no more remixing really, only on the side. I want to work with the big artists to change their sound and mine.

Jersey club & dancing goes hand and hand. It’s like peanut butter and jelly.

The ‘Run Ricky Run x Higher’ video centers around some incredible dancers. Can you speak to the importance of dance culture within Jersey?

Jersey club & dancing goes hand and hand. It’s like peanut butter and jelly. The dancers get all of their ideas by how the song sounds & what kind of vibe it has. Like everybody came up listening to Jersey club, if you’re from Jersey then you know what it is. The ‘Run Ricky Run x Higher’ video really captured the things we do in Jersey. It was all homies in the video as well.

Jersey Club is a genre that built upon and known for its wild samples. What’s your favourite club sample or sound?

Hmmm, my favorite club sample…has to be the bed squeak. It’s very vital, Jersey club is known for being sexy sometimes. That’s a must.

You’ve been teasing big things coming with Cartel Nation. Can you tell us a little bit about what Cartel Nation is about and what we can expect from you guys?

Cartel Nation is the squad. They are the homies I came up with. We went to parties together, made music together for as long as I can remember. Cartel Nation consists of dancers, DJ’s , Rappers , Producers. A little bit of everything. Specifically I’ve been teasing the song ‘Action’ Stacks Cartel Ft. Classic (Prod. DJ Big O), Executive Produced by me. That’s gonna be a nice one right there. You can expect these guys to flood the game with new music. We have music we have been working on for years.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/289747435″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

You connected with the legendary Fatman Scoop for ‘Higher’ earlier this year. How did that collaboration come about? What was it like working together?

Basically he had got in contact with me about sending him some specific songs. I sent them to him and we would always be in touch. When ‘Higher’ came about I felt like it needed a little something, so I hit him up and we made it work. It wasn’t an in studio thing, but we sent ideas back and fourth. It was a great experience for what it was.

Earlier this year you joined the OWSLA team. How has the experience been so far? What has changed since joining the team?

I love OWSLA , they know exactly what they are doing. They have a great handful of staff that’s constantly working. So far I just think they really opened my eyes and changed my perspective on music. Being around forward thinking people builds your brain up to just be more creative. Music has changed, shows have changed, just everything for the good.

You have the OWSLA logo tattooed on your arm, that’s a pretty powerful commitment. What does that tattoo mean to you?

Yes! This tattoo to me means my first very big shot. I feel like in the past people gave me chances with things but not like this. I felt like OWSLA was just like “you ready, let’s do this!” I feel like some people try to just give you enough of what you need & the OWSLA team is like whatever you need to get things done, let’s do it.

Me making music, my mind wasn’t even on no fashion shit really.

What’s the craziest place that music has taken you?

Craziest place to me was being at fashion shows with Rick Owens & going to dinner with him and his wife. Me making music, my mind wasn’t even on no fashion shit really. Alexander Wang also used my music in his shows as well. Also of course all around the world. I’m actually in Hong Kong right now doing this interview on the way to Jakarta!

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/249525709″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

You recently had your SoundCloud page deleted. Do you see yourself continuing to use the platform and rebuilding or will you be moving onto another platform?

I feel SoundCloud has been rubbing everybody the wrong way. I’m sure their numbers have went down. I don’t really care for it, I made a new one (Sliink Official). I just tried to upload ‘Long Minute’ with Brenmar & they immediately flagged it . Lmao it’s my song and they suck. Not sure what future platforms I will be using. Can def hear things on Spotify and all that.

I’m very creative so I think I’m going to surprise myself.

You’d mentioned you’re working on a new EP. How’s it coming along? Can you give us any details (when is it coming out, title, etc.)?

I’m just working on a bunch of music for the past few years. I’m not sure what it will be and what will come from it. Just know I’m working and things will be out.

Where’s the Sliink sound going for 2017?

I’m very creative so I think I’m going to surprise myself. I always do! Thanks for the interview.

This past Saturday was a night that defied expectations several times over. The event was Anna Lunoe’s HYPERHOUSE tour, which saw her touching down at The Hoxton along with DJ Sliink and Vindata. When I saw the line-up I knew I had to be there. I’ve been waiting to see Sliink since 2012, enjoy Vindata and kept hearing about Anna Lunoe. I expected Sliink to murder it, and for the other two to be good, but I greatly undervalued the talent of Vindata and Anna Lunoe. The whole night was incredible from beginning to end. Here’s how it all went down.

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

Vindata – Shot By Will Selviz

I got in just before 11 and the crowd was still pretty sparse. The mood was laid-back as people socialized and grabbed drinks while Local DJ/Producer Cosella was warming things up with some deep bass. As Vindata took the stage it seemed the venue instantly grew more packed. The spead out crowd was magnetized to the front of the room. As I moved closer, I warned my brother that their set may be a bit slow for his tastes (I turned out to be very wrong). I’m a casual Vindata fan and expected a mixture of chill trap and future bass. What they delivered was well beyond my expectations in both quality and energy. Yeah, they played some future bass, most notably their Mija collab ‘Better’ (which killed), but they took it so much further. From mashing Green Day into Moombahton, to ‘Ni**as In Paris’ into flute-ridden trap and Mr. Carmack. They started slow, pulling the crowd in and had it in full party mode shortly after. A ‘Panda’ x ‘Purple Lamborghini’ mash-up went off and they even had us crankin’ that Soldier Boy. Midway through the set Anna Lunoe popped up to show some love, and as their set neared it’s end, Sliink came through with some shots of Henny to celebrate with the duo and warm himself up. The scene was a great display of camaraderie and love between the DJs that only made it feel like more of an inclusive party for all.

Anna Lunoe x DJ Sliink – Shot by Will Selviz

As Sliink took over the decks, he let everyone know where he’s from with ‘Nwxrk’ (Jersey!), the beautiful build and vocals gave way to the rawness of A$AP Ferg’s ‘Work’ and it was on. Sliink showed love to OWSLA boss Skrillex with his classic ‘Cinema’ flip and fellow label mate Yogi with ‘Burial’. With flips of ‘Hotline Bling’ and ‘Show Me Love’ Sliink proved that there’s a Jersey remix for everything. When I heard Ma$e come in for ‘Mo Money, Mo Problems’ it was a wrap. It’s not often you here Ma$e and Skrillex in the same set, but I assure you it’s something special. I went into this set expecting Sliink to kill it, and that’s exactly what he did. Lunoe came out once more to party with Sliink before it was her time to take over.

Anna Lunoe Stance – Shot by Will Selviz

Anna Lunoe shot by Will Selviz

I have a confession. I’ve been sleeping on Anna Lunoe. She’s been on my radar as someone I need to check out and dive into, but I’ve never took the time. That said, I went into her set expecting to see a pretty good house set that would leave me satisfied. What I got instead was straight up fucking wow’d. Anna Lunoe is incredible. From her selection, to her mixing and her energy, she’s everything that makes a DJ great. She bounced across genres as effortlessly as she did the stage. Moving from O.T. Genesis to Gesaffelstein, ‘I Love Kanye’ into rave house and classic Prodigy into Getter x Ghastly. She kept the filthy club vibe from Sliink going for some time and even dropped some Athletixx. She brought in some classic breakbeats before dropping them into some crazy new shit. She proved she can play anything with ease and without losing the crowd for a second. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more crazy, Hunter Siegel and Autoerotique rolled up for an impromptu b2b with Lunoe. This just added to the ill house party feel that engulfed the night. When the lights finally came on and the music stopped there was no way to feel other than wow’d. HYPERHOUSE was one hell of night.
