Tiesto has released his first drum&bass song in over a decade, Brownies&Lemonade’s DNBNL project has partnered with Deadbeats and is going to Tomorrowland, Deadmau5 has played a D&B set at EDC Mexico, Chase & Status are once again one of hottest acts around, a new North American WORSHIP tour is about to kick off and Rohaan has just wrapped up another multi-week series of show in the States.

Now. I won’t say the phrase. Nor will I dust off the infamous hashtag (you know the one). I’m just being objective. The ball is rolling (pun intended) and this gives me a chance to throw myself into the fray with something that flirts with both culture and SEO. This month I bring back Bootleg Business with a massive drum&bass pack of 30 (unofficial) remixes that showcase pretty much everything the genre has to offer. Forget obscure cuts or hyper-sophisticated intellectual material though, this collection is strictly party-friendly. We have jump-up bangers, mainstage classic reworks, liquid rollers, ten-year-old remixes, ten-day-old remixes, weird bootlegs, and cheesy edits of pop songs. This Bootleg Business volume has it all. Rumble remix included.

Friendly reminder that this list doesn’t pretend to showcase the finest bootlegs around, nor the rarest. Music can be (just) fun, remember? This is an opportunity to have fun celebrating the art of unofficial remixes and, why not, a chance to find some new goodies to spice up your tracklists ahead of the festival season. As in the case of my summer special, the playlist is loosely divided into two parts. It starts with the heaviest cuts and it progresses into the more melodic tracks.

Have fun!

It hasn’t been long since we hosted Drvmmer here on FUXWITHIT, but it’s absolutely necessary to talk about him again because his new EP released via Electric Wave is something that doesn’t pass unnoticed. You can love it, you can hate it, but you can’t ignore it. Let’s start by saying that this is such a fitting title. Inside Burn, Drvmmer often plays with fire, risking burning himself but in the end, he always manages to transform every gamble into a victory. In recent times he has accustomed us more and more to drum & bass releases and this EP seems to seal his relationship with this genre. Of the four tracks, two are hybrids that feature a melting pot of genres, while the other two are pure D&B. Pure so to speak because Drvmmer never opts for a scholastic approach. It’s no liquid, it’s no jungle. It is Drvmmer and bass.

‘Burn’ and ‘Without You’ are the EP’s flagships and both deliver extremely captivating and galvanizing melodies (supported in the second case by a delightful performance by ARTIKA) combined with hellish drum patterns and loud snares. The results are as glittering as muscular. If you wear a smartwatch, well, I’d keep an eye on it while you listen to these songs and I’m sure you will see your heart rate skyrocket. The other two cuts, ‘Xeno’ and ‘Right Now’, are more adventurous. While with the first Drvmmer holds himself with just some digressions in the future/color bass world before returning to D&B territories, with the second one he simply decided to go over the top. Not one, not three, not five. Six damn drops squeezed into four minutes of madness. I know it sounds impossible but somehow he actually made it work and the result is mental! Of course, this is not a track that I’d listen to every day, but if you need an ace in your sleeve for when you want to impress your friends or turn the dancefloor upsidedown, ‘Right Now’ is the one. Oh, and if you still wear that smartwatch, it’s probably better that you take it off before you start listening, cause I’m seriously worried it couldn’t withstand such craziness.

You can now listen to Burn here or on your favorite platform. If you’re a fan and you want to uncover some cool easter eggs and oddities about the EP, be sure to check the interview I did with Drvmmer below. If you’re a producer, be sure to don’t miss the Audius remix competition for ‘Without You’ as well!

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/1351706782″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

By digging on your profile on SoundCloud it looks like this is your first EP. Is it so?

Not really, I started the Drvmmer project about 3/4 years ago and the very first Drvmmer release was an EP called Sad (First and Second). These were the times when I was making my first experiments in sound design and melodic/bass music. You can’t find a full official release of the two except for ‘Buried Alive’ and ‘I’ll Fly Away’ on my SoundCloud, but you can still find both the EPs around YouTube. I could say that Burn EP is a clear evolution of my style in terms of sound quality and feelings.

Your sound has been very coherent in the past years but this EP clearly delves into DnB. What led to the decision to put together an EP?

I was firstly blown away when Degra (founder of Electric Wave) offered me the chance to release a 4 track EP, so I quickly came up with some demos. Most of them were around 170 – 174 BPM and I think that DnB is a very special genre for a very special label like Electric Wave so I took the deal and made with Zimoh and Artika all the craziest things we had in mind (‘Xeno’ is a future-drum&bass-garage-riddim track).

We need to talk about ‘Right Now’. I mean, 6 drops? Were there all necessary? How do you even write a song like this one? Do you work on different drops in different studio sessions or do you jump from one to another without problems?

This was the funniest track to work on for that reason, I started it about 2 years ago but really made a pair of sessions to make the entire track, (it’s actually the oldest D&B song of all except for ‘Fast’, released on Electric Wave in 2020). I liked to give the chance to the listener to find themselves into a specific drop or part of the song, so I had to make a lot of drops!

I spotted a Lord Of The Ring sample. Are there any other easter eggs hidden in the EP?

Hell yes! I’m a big fan of the LOTR saga so I thought to cooperate with Gandalf The Grey to let the track express a little sign of gratitude for a very great movie with such an important scene like that. Also in ‘Xeno’ you can barely hear a quite used Italian expression but heavily processed to censor it just before the very first drop ;) (Zimoh and me use this quite a lot lol). In ‘Burn’ the main chop vocal is an iPhone voice memo made quickly by me.

I see that you’re running a remix competition on Audius for the track ‘Without You’. Let’s dream for a moment: if you could pick 3 artists to remix the track, who would they be?

This is a very catchy question, I’d start by saying that I’m really enjoying this first Drvmmer remix competition and I can’t wait to hear all the works that will be submitted in the next days! It’s not a very common thing for underground artists like me so I’m really grateful for what is going on with it. So it’s not too easy to answer the main question but if I had to say three names in the whole scene that I would love to let them remix my music they clearly would be The Beatles, Skrillex and Mozart (I’m dying thinking about this oh my god hahaha).

Sharing his brand new and trippy galaxy, Drvmmer returns with a killer new single called ‘Melophile.’ A blast of airy and powerful tones which sinks into your soul in the best ways possible. A whimsical and out of body experience. Creating feelings of solace and empowerment throughout. And inspiring others at the same time. Since this is his debut on KUMO Collective, he wanted to truly go all out. Testing new abilities while showcasing characteristics he’s learned throughout his time as a producer. Paying homage to his hard work and overall journey. And If you haven’t heard of this legend yet, we highly suggest checking out his lineup of priceless gems.

Known for his impactful arrangements, synths and drums, Drvmmer is a name which has taken the underground by storm. Tearing down boundaries and pushing his signature frequencies throughout each piece. He’s even remixed icons such as San Holo, Virtual Riot and even camoufly! There’s no telling what he’ll spring upon his listeners next. Proving his art and workflow are very flexible and adaptable to the core. And teaming up with KUMO Collective is very exciting to say the least. Helping each other to bring both visions into the spotlight.

‘Melophile’ is a shapeshifting entity of great power. It incorporates many unique qualities from the electronic genre as a whole. From a monumental and airy atmosphere to out-of-this-world sound design, the artist pushed for the stars and ended up with an absolute weapon for the dance floors. Creating an instant frenzy through anyone who comes in contact.

The aggressive and passive nature of the tune really takes you off guard and completely takes over your mind with colorful melodies and storming drums. Taking you off your feet and shooting you down a spiraling pit of the future. Discovering fresh and organic sounding qualities along the way. Emotions you’ll cherish forever. This is by far some of Drvmmer’s most ecstatic and jaw-dropping work to date. So make sure to go support by streaming ‘Melophile’ everywhere via KUMO Collective!

One of the things that I love the most about doing music reviews is that I constantly learn new things while writing them. Most of the time I create a draft on WordPress, I write the first lines, and then I inevitably get lost in the maze of the web looking for anecdotes, music charts, production tutorials, documentaries, and so on. An example? Two weeks ago I wasn’t even aware of the existence of the “color bass” subgenre (I’m guilty of not reading Chime’s interview) and now I’m here singing the praises of a color bass track and watching dozens of tutorials about it.

Released via Italian imprint Electric Wave, ‘Overload’ brings to life everything I’ve learned so far about the subgenre and much more. After all, with Drvmmer it is always like this. He’s part of the elite of producers who have their own specific sound, recognizable with closed eyes. You can’t expect basic stuff. Genres are nothing but empty banners in front of his overflowing inventiveness as he always bends them to his will, bringing to light fantastic sonorous chimeras.

Packed in just the first eighty seconds of ‘Overload’ there is much more than what I sometimes find in some five minutes (or more) tracks. Everyone has a different style you might argue, it’s not that one is better than another. Fair point, but I can’t help saying it’s impressive. Above all, because all these elements are welded together by a brilliant stylistic coherence. Everything is always extremely colorful (pun intended), vivid. There are no filler moments. All these glitchy sounds make our eardrums vibrate with pleasure. The uplifting melodies are mood-enhancing. They hit you like an electric shock and physically stimulate the body, from head to toes, like an injection of endorphins. I can swear that it’s definitely unusual for me to be so excited about a track that incorporates so many dubstep references, but what can I say, I can recognize a thoroughbred track when I encounter one.

Listen to ‘Overload’ here and be sure to check also Drvmmer’s recent remixes of Jack Ü and camoufly because they’re both top tier.

Focus Five is back for 2021! As January comes to a close it’s time for us to round up our five fresh finds for the month. Rounding out the list we have some incredible future beats, a fresh take on house, drum and bass mastery, and a few producers defying genre barriers. Check them all below.

Cerdin

First setting off my radar in late September, killer Calgarian producer Cerdin kicked the door down with the ferocity of ‘FRACTURE.’ Its undeniable intensity and ominous energy give it the feeling of a high-stakes shootout. Almost unhinged in its radioactive rollout, Cerdin doesn’t let the track stagnate; instead, he fires off a flurry of effects while sending ‘FRACTURE’ flying off in all directions. More recently, we’ve seen an explosion of releases as he tackled the likes of A.G. Cook, Baauer, and Clipping in his second remix package. While distinct in their styles, each one of these free offerings slaps. Whether hyperactive like ‘Show Me What,’ a wall of sound like ‘AETHER,’ or slow and sadistic like ‘96 Neve Campbell,’ Cerdin crafts the perfect punch for each track. Now, for my money, Cerdin’s hardest hitters come in ‘Lemonade,’ ‘3030!‘ and ‘OLD SCHOOL.’ Hop on his hardcore bandwagon and brace yourself for a bumpy ride!

Drvmmer

Now that I think about it, it’s almost a year since I met Andrea aka Drvmmer for the first time. If I’m not wrong, it was during the only gig I attended in 2020 alongside Patrick, msft., Voliik, Marlus, GAZZ, Degra and many others. Ah, the nostalgia. Anyway, I waited so long to give him a spotlight not because I wanted to spite him but because I preferred to follow a rational approach. You see, sometimes here on Focus Five I like to follow my instincts and make bets, but I know that I’m not flawless. For this first episode of the year instead, I wanted to give you a guarantee and now I can assure you that waging on this artist is not a risky business. Drvmmer is an assurance. It’s not subject to volatility and inflation. His production level leaves no doubt, it is first class. Even though he usually creates highly complex sonic textures, the outcome is always absurdly clean. It doesn’t matter how many genres it changes within a single song or how much the sound pressure is: the outcome will always be a treat for your ears. Dubstep, electronica, drum&bass his SoundCloud profile says loud and clear “fuck genres”. Want concrete proof? Just listen to his latest remix of Jack U’s classic ‘Mind’ and thank me later. From what I know, he’s sitting on an insane amount of music and, even if he’s going to release just a small share of it, I’m sure you’ll see him again on the pages of FUXWITHIT in 2021.

Knick

It may be a new year but I’m keeping my streak of championing future beats alive in 2021. One of the latest producers to catch my ear within the space is North Carolina’s Knick. It was Knick’s collaboration ‘distantworlds’ off of cozy kev’s complacency that first caught my attention. The track is a majestic work of art – heavenly, vibey and packing just the right amount of bump. A dive into Knick’s SoundCloud shows this is no fluke. He just dropped a next-level collab with $teev, koru & ohgoddc entitled ‘elevate’. Living up to its name, the song will take you to a higher plane of existence. It will allow you to feel lighter, unburdened, and lost in the bounce. While the collabs are amazing, Knick can definitely stand alone on his own. ‘circumvent’ is absolutely stunning while ‘aluminum’ shows off a more relentless approach. For the future beats fanatics such myself, Knick is undeniably one to watch.

spüke

The last year has been everything but easy for everyone. Given the challenges, we could all use a little uplifting. Enter: spüke. The California producer is crafting energizing and futuristic house tunes to give listeners new life. ‘Emanate’ which was released on Bonsai’s Hayashi compilation was a staple in my summer rotation. Moving vocals, wildly bouncy drops, and a playful candor made it a certified warm weather bop. Keeping the heat up came the gripping and emotive ‘tell me’ which carries a truly uplifting energy. Risking it all with a remix of a classic, spüke delivered with an addictive flip of Flux Pavillion’s ‘I Can’t Stop.’ Taking on a iconic anthem is no easy feat but the talented producer delivered in full. If you’re looking for a fresh spin on house check out spüke.

Trinist

Unfortunately, I can’t take the credit for this one, but I feel like this month’s list would be incomplete without the inclusion of Trinist. Landing on my radar just a couple of weeks ago thanks to his pristine release on Powered by Inspected: Series 2, I knew I had to jump aboard the Trinist train before the bandwagon left the station. With less than 400 SoundCloud followers at the time of writing, the Netherlands-based producer has shown immense promise with his latest releases on Inspected, VALE, and Andy C’s RAM Records. The former, which was my introduction to this talented artist, is a mind-melting drum and bass cut that’s abrasive yet bouncy, and chaotic yet controlled. A deeper dive into Trinist’s brief arsenal shows more of this meticulous attention to detail, with carefully crafted sounds and mechanical percussion precision being a recurring theme in his latest tracks. I’m keeping a close eye on Trinist, you should too.
