This week’s featured artist for our guest mix series is going to go places, mark my words. NYC-based vxrt has been quietly paving a path for himself online with releases on SUBU, dumb collective., and Partica, among others. With an ear for beats both beautiful and grimy, vxrt’s discography has a track to please just about anyone; from insanely groovy house music, to golden SoundCloud-era trap, to introspective, atmospheric beats, it’s all there in one form or another.

We’re lucky to have had the chance to have vxrt hop on the guest mix this week, and boy did he he come prepared! Doing things a little differently this time, this mix comes with a special visual accompaniment that you can watch on YouTube here. Let’s get into it!

Thanks for taking the time to hop on this interview! How is life treating you?

Life is great! Been loving the summer here in NYC, spending a lot of time with friends, family, and my cat.

Can you tell us a bit about the guest mix you’ve prepared for us today?

This guest mix is a more laidback mix of what my album, “still here” was influenced by. Recently I’ve been enjoying taking my love for harder-hitting drums and rhythms and mixing it with more melodic and ambient style productions.

There’s this one growl in that song that sounded so out of this world to me. I just had never heard anything like that and I NEEDED to know how it was done. From there I’ve just been deep into producing ever since.

Tell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to start making music?

Music has always been a part of my life since I was younger but producing is what really hooked me. The spark for making music was this one MUST DIE! remix of ‘Flames’ by Sawgood. There’s this one growl in that song that sounded so out of this world to me. I just had never heard anything like that and I NEEDED to know how it was done. From there I’ve just been deep into producing ever since.

Some of my favorite tracks of yours are your flips. What about a track makes it stand out to you in such a way that you decide you want to make an edit?

Thank you! Most often that spark of inspiration will come from DJing or going out, where I’ll hear a track and just know I want to put my spin on it. I’ve also got a long-running folder of songs I want to remix, so sometimes I’ll start there to get inspiration.

Collaborating is such a great way to branch out and get back to the root of why we make music which is about having fun and expressing yourself.

You’ve recently begun releasing some really killer house tracks with too° under the alias Westt. What prompted this new direction?

I feel like as creatives we can put ourselves into unnecessary boxes of styles. Collaborating is such a great way to branch out and get back to the root of why we make music which is about having fun and expressing yourself. I LOVE making more dancey house music. Westt is actually a mash of myself and my best friend from high school that we started up in 2016. It has always been about just writing fun house music and not taking ourselves too seriously.

Do you have any big plans regarding music for the rest of the year?

Got a couple more chill releases lined up, but I’d love to also wrap up this Westt album and get back into releasing some more bass music!

I know you have releases with both SUBU and dumb collective (maybe I’m missing some labels, feel free to shout them out). How did you get involved with them?

SUBU happened rather randomly from a friend in college (shoutout MF) sending one of my tracks to them. Now I’ve been with them for a while and SUBU is like family to me. Also had the pleasure of releasing with dumb collective, Partica, Arcadium Project and Badmouth! All been super supportive and it just happened organically through connecting with folks on Twitter or Discord.

If you could have a release on your dream label, who would it be?

Would be an honor to release on Foreign Family Collective, Nervous Records, or Sable Valley.

Who are some sleeper artists that you’ve had on repeat lately?

ATRIP, Hundaes (check out his Sine Journals), ILIVEHERE, & denis biblioni have all been on repeat. Always listening to so much music from my SUBU homies too.

Never stop creating!

What’s your favorite hobby outside of music?

I’ve been enjoying biking around NYC a lot! Been trying my hand at bowling… and also must admit I’ve been sucked back into playing a lot of Pokemon Emerald.

Any other words you’d like to share with our readers?

Thank you for having me! Never stop creating!

Trap fans rejoice because boy oh boy do we have a whale-sized treat for you today! If you’re as stuck in the underground as our team is, then you’re familiar with the prevalence and absurd quality of SoundCloud trap, and its epic legacy throughout the past decade. One of the fastest blossoming groups to come out of the current ecosystem is Dumb Collective, dishing up only DUMB lit, DUMB heavy, and DUMBfounding productions. Spearheaded by the likes of Yojas, Bd Hbt, LYNY, and ESP.R., they’ve accumulated quite the impressive roster of forward-thinking blapper-makers, decimating eardrums and causing hips to stir and shake until they snap at their foundation. Overt hip-hop overtones mixed with crispy clean production and a palpable air of “we don’t give a flying fuck, we’re just having fun and making beats,” makes this one of the most exciting brands stirring in the underbelly of the scene. We had to dig deeper into their mindset and the direction they want to steer their ship, so we tapped them for the 152nd installment of our guest mix + interview series. You can expect loads of unreleased heaters, saucy vocals, and an all-around good time. Check out the full interview and guest mix for yourself below!

Your collective is based around tracks that are less than 2 minutes long. How did you guys come up with that particular length, and what made you want to highlight shorter productions?

People’s attention spans are very short. We just want to catch attention immediately. A lot of people have the tendency to just skip to the meat and bones of the song anyway. With dumb, click play on any track and you’re already there.

You have quite the impressive roster size already with 15 total artists confirmed! How did you decide on that particular assortment of names?

They’re mainly familiar faces in the trap scene from other labels like sus collective and Partica, and then we’ve discovered some mad talented artists from our submissions like Kazantzakis.

What’s the main ethos behind Dumb Collective?

We are just an eclectic group of producers that have a specific taste in “dumb music”. Our product is not meant to be taken seriously. It’s meant to show that you shouldn’t care about the certain “standard” of which you think you need to uphold. We don’t care whether you enjoy our content or not because at the end of the day, we’re just having a good time and we hope you are too.

What impact do you aim to have on the trap scene and the electronic dance music community as a whole?

I wish for it to be an established and credible music label and brand most of all. We are moving at a slow pace but still working hard. Anything could happen! It would be a dream if Dumb was recognized enough to have bigger name releases like someone Mr. Carmack. A place where any artists can share their fun dumb little snippet beat that they would never release.

What do you believe are the most important aspects of growing a successful label/collective?

I’d have to say being organized. We really started to grow once we had a more consistent release schedule and social media engagement. Also the community is a huge part of it as well, we wouldn’t be here without the support of our friends.

Any plans to eventually have Dumb Collective takeovers on the festival circuit?

ESP.R: I will be shotgunning white claws with the dumb collective crew backstage at a festival one day. Best believe it.

Yojas. – Yes yes yes. We have a very solid group of individuals that are more than likely playing shows together in the near future. As for a dumb collective takeover. WE ARE OPEN FOR BOOKINGS. PLEASE BOOK US.

Where do you see Dumb Collective going from here?

We’re just here fuck around at the end of the day. If dumb collective pops off, it will be amazing. If it doesn’t, we had a great time. We are all succeeding individually so I can only believe we will become more powerful.

What’s the thing you’ve missed the most about live music?

I really just miss being in the crowd with a group of friends. Nothing really beats the vibe of being amongst a giant crowd of people and vibing to the music. Feels like nothing else matters but that moment.

How do you successfully balance the need for creation to be fun and enjoyable, while simultaneously dealing with the pressure of consistently releasing?

That’s a hard question to answer. Being consistent with releases is crucial for relevancy’s sake but constantly grinding and forcing out music isn’t always the best route. Sometimes you need a mental break and come back once you’re inspired again. This game is all ups and down but I promise you you will always come back up.

You gave us one hell of a guest mix today! Can you clue us into how it all came together, and what you all were trying to showcase?

New tracks from all of us. Couple new dumb tracks. Hope y’all enjoyed!!!

When it comes to flow and straight attitude within a song, Kazantzakis puts a whole new meaning on top. His suave and dreamy atmospheres will leave any listener in a trance. Now he’s back with a brand new single called, ‘breathing.’ Which is out now on dumb collective! Kazantzakis’s discography has taken him into many different directions in terms of feel and emotion. He’s even tapped into labels such as Gang Gang Records, Bonsai Collective and more to spread his fire aftershock.

‘breathing.’ is vastly airy in terms of frequency and tone. Its’ gentle, impactful drums and sound design carries you as high as the clouds. Soaring and going wherever the wind takes you. Starting out with an enticing and ominous introduction, he paints a picture of the soft and blissful above. Sharing all of its’ wonders through melody. Then all of a sudden, the artist hits us with a breath of fresh air. The subtle and filtered-out lead was a perfect and unique choice of approach. It sheds new light and keeps the track that much more interesting. Not to mention his classic and satisfying 808’s and drums to go along.

He then lets the audience take all of it in with a classical-style breakdown. We hear a drifting piano playing chords to build a brand new rhythm. Flying us right into the final chorus. Combining every source of energy from the beginning, he switches it up slightly and manages to keep the same relaxing aura surrounding the track as a whole. By far this is one of his best works yet. So make sure to keep an eye on this musician and stream ‘breathing.’ everywhere!
