Nevada City, California’s Malakai Torres, also known as Edekit, has been consistently pumping out grade-A trap heaters for over a year now, with pristine examples like ‘Just a Scratch‘, which we premiered, and most recently ‘Hat Pins‘, out on Below The Surface. Cultivating an “in your face” aesthetic with maximum attitude, and no-holds-barred levels of prowess, this is a man hell-bent on catapulting his sound to the front of people’s attention. Usually being done playing games is a sign of growth and maturity, but he’s fiercely gone in the opposite direction, dropping the Piranha Plant EP, a 3 track homage to the iconic plant ever-present in all Mario Brothers games. Today, we’ve had the pleasure of premiering ‘Done’ off it for your listening pleasure, right here on FUXWITHIT.

A mysterious air encapsulates your being from the introduction of this piece, using distorted synths that sound reminiscent of something you’d hear when ghosts and ghouls are creeping around Luigi’s mansion. As you begin your sonic romp through this ghastly affair, you’ll be greeted by fantastic sound design and an overtly cheeky energy, much akin to the feeling of jumping on top of turtles and munching mushrooms like everyone’s favorite mustachioed Italian plumber. The vocal samples will leave you in a trance as your body wiggles in all sorts of directions, almost as if the king of koopas is trying to mesmerize you into submission. Fear not though, the castle at the end is within sight, you just need to make it up the immense flight of stairs, make your most powerful leap, and grab the flag at the peak of flag pole for a max bonus. The level is over, but a second rinsing is absolutely in order. Whip-out a pair of overalls and get down with your bad self while blasting this immensely fun piece, and get your first taste of ‘Done’ below!

Malakia Torres, better known as Edekit is a Hawaiian producer pushing the boundaries of bass music. Born on the Big Island, he spent his life growing up in the tropical paradise. That is until last year when a volcanic eruption brought him to the mainland. Despite the traumatic event, Edekit was able to find a silver lining, “The lava flow displaced a huge amount of people in the area and the whole community I was connected with dispersed all over the place. Since there wasn’t much left there for myself, or anyone really, I figured it would be a good time to move to the mainland and start releasing my music to a larger audience.”

Recent releases ‘Wookie Snacks’ and ‘I Can’t Even’ introduced us to his insane alien bass sound. His immense talent is fully displayed with his latest release ‘Just A Scratch’. The track is an exercise in sound design and music manipulation. “Basically every single bass, lead, lazer, or alien sound in here is coming from severely processing a regular ol’ sine wave, then resampling it many times over, and then taking the samples and further processing them through granular synthesis, resampling again, processing the samples again, etc. So in the end, other than those vocal samples and the drums I made a whole track using a single note, E0. It’s mind blowing what we can do with audio now-a-days,” Edekit explains.

But it’s not just a flex in technical mastery, Edekit adds in Monty Python samples to give the track some character and charisma. As he puts it, “I really like making tracks that have a super filthy drop but are kinda funny too. For some reason I just love that stuff, there’s something about writing a track that is a banger but also witty, or kind of tongue in cheek that can really make music fun for me.” Snapping drum work ties the wild ride together. If witty bangers are your thing, you’ll be hard pressed to find one that tops ‘Just A Scratch’. Stream below and grab the free download.
