Only the introduction and break between drops is recognizable as the original ‘Crystal Eyes,’ as the talented producer adds his distinct, wonky synths and hard-hitting percussion to transport listeners to the depths of an eerie cave with no signs of life in sight. Conversely, the second drop is like finding the light at the end of the tunnel, as msft. provides a breathe of fresh soundscapes in an unusual yet flawlessly executed drum & bass portion, all without sounding disjointed from the initial half of the track.

Sarawak opens with ‘Daggers,’ a collab with fellow Aussie experimental rock group Machine Age, which features emotional, powerful vocals from the groups vocalist. A guitar is featured in the drops, a pleasant addition that helps to highlight both parties involved. Next on the EP comes ‘Athena,’ which has a very progressive-trap feel. This has much more traditional styling influences compared to ‘Daggers’. The apex of the first drop is very satisfying, with an upbeat energy to it. The 2nd drop adds more of a future bass overture while still maintaining the familiar undertones from the first, which allows the listener to have new levels of depth and keeps the fluidity of the piece. ‘Hide and Seek’ is a more emotional-leaning song, with lovely female vocals and a chill trap aesthetic that leaves one feeling relaxed. The last 2 songs on the EP are collabs with trap heavyweights TroyBoi and Ekali. ‘Solid’ carries Troyboi’s signature sound with his thick basslines and use of foreign string instruments. It makes for a very adventurous, exciting beat. ‘Closure’ is a fitting closer to the body of work, featuring impressive sound design from Ekali and Slumberjack. The first drop has a satisfying kick but still maintains a relaxed atmosphere, while the second really rounds the 1st, really bringing out the full fledged sound that they were going for.

The 3 collabs in this EP highlight the individual strengths of the artists, without having any stylistically overpower another. Overall, Sarawak is a very diverse EP that is a joy to listen to.

I don’t know about you, but after Ekali featured him four times in a single Awakening Mix, I knew it was just a matter of time before the two would cross paths again. It took a while, but good heavens, here we are. Stop wars, stop hate, today we’re kicking off a Winter of Love. Honestly I’m still quite mad about all the criticism and negative feedback the original faced. That extreme need of the community for something more ‘complicated’ really disappointed me, but this is another story. Instead, I’m ready to bet that not a single soul on this planet will have something to complain about with Laxcity’s interpretation of ‘Forever’. Not because I judge myself some kind of authoritative critic, but simply because it’s perfect under every point of view (yes, even the already-infamous transition at 1:01). Let’s be honest, it barely sounds like a remix. If we didn’t know the original, given how perfectly Elohim’s voice match with his chill style, it may seems that this was a long studied collaboration.

With his trademark orchestral arrangement, the London producer dismantles the pop construction of the original, making ‘Forever’ a musical stream of consciousness where Elohim’s breathtaking vocals can be appreciated even more. Between the piano, strings and voice, the composition elegantly sways like a candle in a dark room, a candle that warms and illuminates us, and at the same time projects and enlarges our shadows and fears.

The remix builds upon the powerful vocals and words of the original allowing it to be instantly recognizable but still so fresh. wev provides deep insight into the remix saying, “The track has a nice cadence to it, it feels like it’s always moving forward. I wanted preserve that feel in my bassline, and strip down the rest of the elements to create a new soundstage. The artwork reflects this— my version is the scene at night. Just by changing the colors and tonality of the art it creates a completely different mood and environment. Doing more with less has definitely been a focus of mine lately.”

Switching the scene to a night time vibe allows ‘Leaving’ to take on a deeper direction. The darkness is surrounding but the moonlight still burns bright. There’s glimmers of hope in the melancholy alongside an undeniable grove. It may be a story of one-sided love but it’s also about embracing hardship and pressing on to become stronger. With the full release of the Crystal Eyes EP boasting a solid six tracks, we were further impressed by the Canadian’s expertise in keeping us captivated for the entirety of the project. ‘Stay Hollow’ with mossy. combines acoustic elements with electronic samples to create a synergistic collision between two usually separate worlds. ‘Forgot How To Dream’ with K.Flay continues this hybrid style that Ekali seems to have perfected, with beautiful guitar riffs taking the lead for the majority of the track. The final, title-track of the EP closes the roller coaster of emotions with a classic future bass touch.

Lacking zero qualifications, the 3 paired up last week for a ridiculously ornate single titled ‘Helios’, which is a brilliant illustration of two styles coming together with glorious synonymity, better than anything I could’ve possibly fathomed on my own.

The track begins with a soothing buildup with gentle chanting vocals in the backdrop, which at first seem to start at a distance, but gradually draw closer as the strings and drums heighten the energy of the song. Suddenly, a riser is introduced as the pace of the drums quickens and before you know what hits you, an exquisitely timed break launches you into the gut-wrenching first drop. By contrasting the dark, deep synth melody with a relentless shower of growling trap noises the trio managed to preserve the melodious essence of SLUMBERJACK’s style while beautifully accentuating the meticulous nature of Ekali’s sound design. A more distinguished, hopeful melody returns, briefly soothing the vibe before an unsuspecting barrage of belt-fed machine gun samples propel you into the second drop. The journey ends with an air of optimism as the yearning string melody brings the tune to a close.

After being completely baffled by the original, we were thrilled to see an edit originating from budding Australian trap producer, Yvng Jalapeño. As his name insinuates, Jordan has been cheffing up spicy beats in the Land Down Under for nearly 3 years and has recently made waves with an absolutely disgusting remix of the track ‘Interstellar’ from the ATLien’s Invasion EP.

With an ingenious eye for combination, Jordan leverages the lavish chorus from RL Grime’s tune ‘Wanna Know’ featuring vocals from Daya to illustrate his interpretation of the most recent masterpiece ‘Helios’ from Ekali & SLUMBERJACK.

The edit begins with the same heartwarming melody as the original, which sets the stage for Daya’s sumptuous vocals, which gently trickle in around the 0:10 mark. When I first heard the track, I had to double take to make sure I wasn’t playing two tracks simultaneously because the chorus flowed SO seamlessly with the original. The initial buildup furnishes the first opportunity for Jordan to tease his signature filthy trap style into the track as the vocals from RL’s track slowly fade out. Permeated with tight metallic drums, the drop takes the song into an entirely new direction, while leaving just the perfect amount of remnants from the original synth pattern to keep you hooked. The vocals flawlessly rejoin the melody, which steadily builds into a gripping second drop, reintroducing Jalapeño’s high pitched trap rhythm interwoven with the harmony of the original track.

“Really loved the original & had some ideas in my head while listening. I wasn’t originally going to keep the ‘RL Grime – I Wanna Know’ vocal in this but it fits really well, so I left it in as this is only an edit” Jordan discloses with his fans on SoundCloud. Even despite his ambiguity, we couldn’t be more pleased with the result of his efforts and personally feel that the vocals do a terrific job of enhancing an already spectacular original.
