Now, this is less of an album as it is a journey through nuerofunk and bass foundation; a creative concoction of genres, timeless sound, and a heavy drenching of disco funk. Nu Strut’s Cognac & Cigars, released with Electric Hawk Records, kicks it off with ‘Pornstache’, a lyrically in-your-face, groovy track laced with dubstep wubs and dubs. It’s bold, but not too busy; there’s plenty of breathing room between each element making it so the soundscape isn’t crowded even though each bit is so unique. This marriage between old and new demonstrates how transcendent and timeless music can be and just how gifted a musician Nu Strut is.

That relationship carries throughout the album, but is also rather noteworthy on the next single ‘BUSSIT’. This track is more tightly woven and its melody is driven not by vocals but by a plucky electric guitar strike. The bass is chunky in this one, is layered in delicately, and jazzed up with a pop of horns here and there. This is a track that is easy to wander off in simply because it is so catchy and easy to get funky with.

There are a few tracks that hone in on more jazz and funk flavors like, ‘Jazz Cabbage’ and ‘Nova Bossa,’ but flirt with plenty of brass horns, big bass, and modern electric sounds. One of my favorites though was ‘You’ which features vocalist Charmae. The rhythm is quicker than most of the other tracks on this album, but its smolder is supreme. The brass horns and easy bassline make Charmae’s voice sound sweet and soft, but not sticky. This isn’t a ballad but it gives off plenty of charm and sophisticated emotion. It’s gentle but determined and irresistibly groovy.

The title track of the collection, ‘Stellar’, which I have the pleasure and honor to premiere here, perfectly works as a key to get familiar with the sound proposed by Trigo. ‘Stellar’ perfectly showcases the fusion of textures that you’ll find in the project. At the aural intro, peaceful and calm like the surface of a lake in absence of wind, alluring, deep bass and growling basslines take the place of this stasis, as if a storm had broken out. Just as a stone falling into the water creates a geometric disruption all around, so the hammering dry kick creates this new controlled chaos, immaculately breaking into the thick layers of glitchy synths, pads and groove.

Although I can understand that for the more accustomed to the genre the plethora of sounds used could sound “classic,” I strongly invite you to take a few more minutes to listen carefully to both ‘Stellar’ and all the whole EP and enjoy their full potential. Feeling like a jolt of electricity that courses through your bones, Nik P’s ‘Crescent’ is a tremendous concoction of delectable drum and bass that makes it nearly impossible to not start wildly wiggling no matter the setting. An audible stimulant of only the highest caliber, Nik P has truly outdone himself, and offered up one of the most energetic pieces on the entire compilation.

Settling into the middle of In Unity, the tremendous twosome of NotLö and Sky Suite offer up a sizzling bass-heavy affair in the form of ‘Dismantle’, a piece that successfully rearranges your being at a subatomic level. With nothing dainty about this piece in sight, listeners should expect hearty cascades of thunderous low-end and immense amounts of crunchy delight. It’s not often that two swiftly rising titans of the underground scene put their heads together, but fans will be guaranteed to be more than satisfied from this delightful combination.

For fans of gritty heavy goodness, Deadcrow’s ‘Predator’ is an absolute weapon of a track, capable of leveling entire city blocks with its vicious sound design. Without a doubt the heaviest piece on In Unity, this is one track that’s surely going to be a favorite among the basshead crowd and would be a sure-fire gamechanger on a standard festival rig. For hard wave aficionados, and even fans of genre-bending underground heat, Deadcrow successfully serves up only the spiciest of heat.

Sydney, Australia’s Tek Genesis continues his sonic expansion from his original project William., trading more traditional trap stylings for left-field-centric flavors. His latest track ‘Holographix’ is no exception, sporting an underlying hip-hop aesthetic while pounding your eardrums with heavy, full-bodied bass that gets one’s head nodding ever-so-satisfyingly. A little bit dubby, a little bit wubby, but all around a fantastic time.

One of the most refreshing pieces on In Unity, ‘Epiphany’ brings unmatched energy to the table filled with unbridled and unrelenting positivity. A track that truly makes it difficult not to smile and get up and groove, this equates to a tremendous treat on the ears and a pleasant jolt to the bones. FRQ NCY has truly upped his sound design to immaculate levels, and his artistic prowess will surely carry him to major career milestones in the coming years.

The last piece I’m going to cover from In Unity is the massive three-way collab between Capshun, Eyezic, and Spüke. A gyration-inducing amalgamation of distinct styles that come together to create an atmosphere of inquisitive joy. Peace sitting calmly at the forefront of your mind while your body relishes in the current moment, it ends by drifting off to quietly to nothing, going out just as soothingly as it began.

Wow. 14 tracks. 18 artists. 1 massive success. In Unity perfectly encompasses the boundary-defying attitude that is so prevalent from the fine folks at Electric Hawk, and is a sure sign that they’re here for good. A shining light in the music community, and a welcome home for the best and brightest, their sophomore compilation album is a smash hit. Want to keep the party rolling? Kicking things off with ‘World Is Yours,’ they’re not taking the world by storm, rather it’s more like a tsunami at this point. Putting on full showcase an already tell-tale sound that borders on “gross” territory, this is one track that will flex your sound system harder than Arnold Schwarzenegger at Mr. Olympia. Immaculate layering and eccentric switch-ups leave listeners in a state of perpetual stupefaction, undeniable swag status firmly attained. If the initial portions of the drops don’t satisfy, just wait until you’re introduced to what I can only describe as the “interstellar war cannon.” File this one under “songs to get abducted to,” all feeble human minds are no match for this extraterrestrial bass monstrosity.

Next up is ‘Vznary’, a diabolically brutal sonic arrangement if you’ve ever heard one. Continuing the trend of far-out, space grime, one might mistake these boys for visitors from outer space themselves. The initial drop is another fine example of the heavier side of wook-based dubstep, trading the more traditional dubstep approach for much more cosmic-leaning undulations. The latter drop is much more grating, substituting the impeccably clean wubs for elongated sounds reminiscent of funky construction equipment. Put on your hard hats folks, this one is dangerous.

In basketball, people shout “cash” after shooting to indicate that their shot is assuredly going to hit the mark. In this instance, blurrd vzn’s ‘Cash’ is also right on the money. Wheeling and dealing wild wiggles like no one’s business, this is one piece that’s absolutely punishing. Snapping necks with blatant ease, you’ll need to whip out the insurance waivers for all potential innocent victims of this catastrophe. It’s a borderline crime against humanity that full-scale shows and festivals aren’t happening right now, as this piece would demolish swaths of rabid fans with relative ease.

Closing out an EP in proper fashion is no small task, but one the blurrd vzn boys tackled more than successfully. Capping off vznary with only the most ‘Rockin’ of beats, they’ve doled-out a true belter of a track. ‘Rockin’ is as merciless as it is extraordinarily clean, a treat on the ears, and a problem for the nervous system. Hip-hop flavor wrapped-up in a neat bass-heavy package is a present to all graced with its presence.

What else can I possibly say? blurrd vzn have proven once again that they’re here to play with the absolute best of them. With an uber-successful debut EP and a veritable boatload of IDs on the horizon, the sky is truly the limit for this tremendous duo. Check out Vznary for yourself below!

Today I’ve decided to kick off this article by quoting a SoundCloud comment not because I feel lazy, but because I believe this user has put on paper what is the simple reality of the facts. With the gargantuan Wavepool vol. 3 compilation and the epic stunning return of Klimenks on Wavemob, the past week was already a memorable one for fans of the genre and seeing our friends at Electric Hawk adding fuel to the fire was just the ice on the cake. With releases spanning from intimate to more hyperactive moods, iSorin has steadily grown up into one of the leading names in the American scene since his first appearance on FUXWITHIT. ‘Dissociate’ fits perfectly into the second category and aims to take you, stealing Electric Hawk’s words, “on a celestial bass journey.”

Too vague? Fine, let me find you a more down-to-earth visual representation. What about a collision between two supermassive black holes? Because that’s exactly what I imagine while listening to ‘Dissociate’. The extreme glitchy nature of the main synth conveys a sense of total fragmentation to me, as the space-time binomial was no longer such an obvious physical law. The behemoth bass instead inexorably spreads in the background like gravitational waves, filling the whole atmosphere with their invisible but still tangible presence. The angelic and airy vocals which debut in the breakdown appear as the only human-like element in the composition. However, exactly like the human nature itself, they are fleeting and frail compared to the complexity of the instrumental part and end up being just a beautiful and romantic apparition that inexorably merges into the ether.
