Yesterday’s unexpected release of Eminem’s tenth studio album Kamikaze is undoubtedly the biggest surprise in music of 2018. The first lines of ‘The Ringer’ read “I’m just gonna write down my first thoughts, see where this takes me, ’cause I feel like I wanna punch the world in the fuckin’ face right now”, setting the stage for the bomb Em is about to drop on the world. He continues the track by dissing just about every mumble-rapper out there, in addition to radio personality Charlamagne tha God and “Agent Orange”, aka Donald Trump, to name a few. Later in the album, Eminem adds the likes of Machine Gun Kelly, Migos, Drake, Tyler the Creator and many more to his diss-list. However, he also goes on to praise Joyner Lucas, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Big Sean for keeping hip-hop new and fresh.

Now, this article isn’t about listing who Eminem is trying to start (or continue) his beef with, nor is it about dissecting each and every lyric because we are all already aware of the rap god’s ingenuity with words. A major theme in Kamikaze is how apparent the Revival critics affected Eminem’s state of mind. The rapper continuously refers to how poorly his 2017 album was received, while bringing back his signature flow that was lacking in Revival. Eminem is able to bring back the Slim Shady that fans fell in love with so many years ago, all while acknowledging his imperfections as an artist and human being. His flow in tracks such as ‘The Ringer’, ‘Greatest’ and ‘Lucky You’ are unmatched, and the lyrics throughout the project are always riddled with double entendres with unparalleled depth.

In Kamikaze, Eminem shows fans his vulnerability and his strength at the same time, criticizing himself as much as he criticizes the world around him. Paul Rosenberg also makes his return in two comical skits that prove Eminem’s sense of humour hasn’t changed one bit. Along with being the biggest surprise of the year, there’s no doubt that Kamikaze is also a massive comeback project. Stream it below and hear it for yourself.

After the release of the Shady XV album, the Detroit native hasn’t dropped much (if any) new music but it seems like as the race for Office in the US nears voting time, Slim has broken his silence. Be warned, this track is an almost 8 minute tirade where Eminem does what he does best and raps his ass off. The lack of beat makes it a little difficult to listen to but the wordplay is incredible. Putting on one hell of a show the Toronto native also brought out Nicki Minaj to perform her remix to ‘The Hills’ which hit the Internet the same day. At midnight, another remix became available through iTunes, this time featuring one of the biggest stars in the world, Eminem. Both Nicki and Marshall bring their own flavour to the already massive track. While Nicki brings sultry and seductive bars to the trap banger, Eminem channels his drug filled past to mix pills with women. Check out the tracks below and let us know who else should remix the number one hit.

For Mother’s Day, Em linked up with legendary director, Spike Lee for the Headlights visual. This song is actually really dope. It walks the listener through the transition of Marshall growing up with his mom, hating her throughout most of his life and eventually forgiving her and letting her know he still loves her. It’s an emotionally charged track and with Nate Ruess (lead singer of FUN) providing the vocals on the hook, it really comes together well. The highly publicized (through media and his music) relationship between Em and Debbie Mathers has generally been one in a negative light and this track really changes it all. Peep the visual below and after that, hug your Mom and let her know you love her.

It’s Thursday, time to hit you with another Track You May Have Missed. This week we’re taking it back to 1996 for a cut off Eminem’s debut album Infinite. It’s the title track and opens the album off. Keep in mind this is pre Dr. Dre. The production is understated with a laidback vibe allowing for Em’s lyricism, wordplay and flow to take center stage. In my opinion this is one of the greatest Eminem tracks ever. The verses contain sharp battle rhymes, intelligent punchlines and an amazingly intricate flow. “I let the beat commence so I can beat the sense in your elite defense/ I got some meat to mince, a crew to stomp and then two feet to rinse.” There is an abundance of quotables, so I won’t run through them all but even the chorus is impressive, “I’m Infinite, you heard of hell? Well I was sent from it/ I went to it serving a sentence for murdering instruments/ Now I’m trying to repent from it but when I hear the beat/ I’m tempted to make another attempt at it, I’m Infinite.”

Whether you’re a fan of Eminem or not, this track is a must listen. Are you feeling his old-school style or do you prefer the direction he took later in his career? Let us know in the comments below.

“these are the results of a thousand electrics volts”

On February 23rd 1999, Eminem released The Slim Shady LP. This album was his official introduction to the world and its impact on the rap game was huge. With Dr. Dre overseeing the project as an Executive Producer, Eminem introduced us to his alter ego, Slim Shady.

Eminem came out of the gate guns blazing and told a story of an underdog different from what rap listeners were used to. He was the comic nerd from a broken home, who got bullied and found music as his outlet to tell the world his side of the story. The Slim Shady LP shocked listeners, critics and politicians. It garnered worldwide attention because of its subject matter and lyrical prowess. The follow up to his original Slim Shady EP (1997-98), the 1999 release was full of sharp lyrics, dark storytelling, outright disses, and humour.

My Name Is was the perfect mainstream introduction for Eminem. He was able to show off his lyrical ability and wittiness. But if you’ve listened to the whole album you know that there are so many other tracks on the LP that are much better. One of the best songs from The Slim Shady LP is “Rock Bottom“. A somber beat with lyrics that paint an emotional story, this track exposes you to the life this Detroit rapper lived.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-3CmKofKTU&w=720&h=415]

But the storytelling doesn’t stop there. “Brain Damage”, “Guilty Conscience” with Dr. Dre, and “Cum On Everybody” are all great songs that tell a fluent story. On the track “Brain Damage” Em raps, “My first day in junior high this kid said It’s you and I/ three o’clock sharp this afternoon you die/ I looked at my watch it was 1:20/ I already gave you my lunch money/ What more do you want from me”. Listen below to get the full picture.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GwRFc1j4Do&w=720&h=415]

Since the release of The Slim Shady LP, Eminem has been through extreme highs and more recently extreme lows. He followed his debut album with the Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, which are certified rap classics and solidified him as a hip hop heavyweight. His recent battle with drugs took him off the scene for about 5 years but on his path to redemption he returned with 4 albums, Relapse (2009), Recovery (2010), Hell: The Sequel (Eminem and Royce Da 5’9) (2011) and MMLP2 (2013). As a fan, I think Eminem is one of the greatest of all time. Yea, I said it. You need to listen to the lyrics, wordplay, flow and delivery if you think otherwise. Listen to The Slim Shady LP and celebrate 15 years of Eminem’s debut.

Bonus: One of the illest Em tracks featuring Masta Ace and J-Black, Hellbound
