Brooklyn, New York’s Sam Eckstein, also known by his Esseks moniker, is one of those bass music artists that seemingly cannot miss. Diversifying his sonic portfolio with a broad range of energies and emotions, he crafts the perfect soundtrack for any project-x party, or an introspective moment riddled with fond remembrance of tender times. Recently, ‘Ellie’s Nap‘, released as part of Gravitas’s Emergence compilation album, rests daintily in the latter category, affording temporary cognitive bliss for all enraptured in its healing frequencies. Just last month, he gifted us another audible treasure in the form of ‘Watching From a Distance‘, the debut single from his forthcoming Deadbeats body of work The Villain’s Journey. Now, he’s back once more with an 8-bit video game-inspired piece ‘Boss Lair’, filled to the brim with stylistic swagger and undeniable production prowess.

We’re going to take a quick mental journey together, alright? *Cue tell-tale flashback music and a darkened fog that slowly opens to a scene that seems both alien and distinctly familiar.* You’re in a cavernous expanse, possibly a dark cave or the seedy underbelly of a castle’s dungeon. Lit torches cast flickering shadows across the walls creating an impending sense of doom mixed with an unmistakable yearn for adventure. This is the exact feeling created by ‘Boss Lair’, as it perfectly encapsulates that electric feeling of wonder that you felt growing up as a child playing video games. Uncovering the depths of your imagination and painting a distinct mental picture as the soundwaves wash over you, you’ll truly feel like the hero of the story, capable of taking down any sized foe with grace and poise. Saucy rhythm gets the hips swaying as your body’s stimulation becomes borderline overwhelming, turning music into a full-blown virtual reality simulation, courtesy of Essek’s most gracious self. Bassy, bombastic switch-ups send this track overboard, as the game freezes and you must undertake the mission once more. The boss is waiting. Ready player one. Take the dive into ‘Boss Lair’ below.

When it comes to masterfully slicing and dicing soundwaves with expert precision, Esseks is without a doubt one of the most slept-on names in this particular department. A name that a large percentage of the scene is familiar with, yet rarely gets the respect or recognition that he truly deserves. Utilizing a distinctly dark, yet sensual, overall aesthetic to his pieces that unravel the consciousness in an overtly pleasing manner, it’s no wonder that bass music fans that take a deep dive into his discography become stans in no-time flat. His Broken Thought EP in 2018 left us puddled and fully immersed in his decadent, larger-than-life soundscapes, and his most recent release ‘Ellie’s Nap‘ was rich with style and thick with vibes. Besides his music, he’s also an extremely talented illustrator and makes all the cover art for his releases, creativity practically seeping from his persona. Now, he’s back with his 2nd release of the year with ‘Watching From a Distance,’ out now on Deadbeats.

Immediately gripping your attention with an inquisitive melody that defies all earthbound logic, fans will be left wondering just what they got themselves into by pressing play on this 2 minute and 33-second sonic journey. Greeted by a scintillating and diabolically groovy deluge of bass, the hips will get a-quivering and the booties will get a-shaking. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, SMACK, you’re gut-punched with a hearty helping of morbidly obese low-end thicker than an entire fleet of bowls of oatmeal. Successfully building off his already trademarked sound with keen attention to detail and notably upgraded speaker purrs, Essek’s evolution is both immensely impressive and yet not surprising in the least. ‘Watching From a Distance’ is one piece of a fresh body of work titled The Villain’s Journey, and you can catch it in full soon on Deadbeats. Check out ‘Watching From a Distance’ for yourself below!

Bassrush Records features an outspoken cast of contributing talents that span to cover every nook and cranny of the bass scene.

While Bassrush has consistently maintained a steady outpouring of audible content and a salient presence as a stage host for major events, such as Electric Forest, it wasn’t until the midway point this past summer that the brand further explored the concept of a roster compilation, as featured in the Ghost Town LA soundtrack, which features tracks from Bassrush dark dubstep front-runners Caspa, Ternion Sound, Coki, Eazybaked, and Bukez Finezt.

Now revealing the first chapter of a novel new compilation, The Prophecy: Vol. 1 works as a synopsis of Bassrush’s talent, composing 11-unique tracks including a long-anticipated collaborative gauntlet between sfam, G-Space, & Mystic Grizzly, as well as tunes from the likes of Esseks, Shanghai Doom, Abelation, FRQ NCY, and ECRAZE.

Encompassing the many eclectic sub-genres that bass has to offer, this new Bassrush Compilation is not one to miss. Be sure to check out The Prophecy: Vol. 1 out now below!

Esseks, born Sam Eckstein, has been making weird and wonderful beats that have been pushing the boundaries of experimental bass music for almost a decade. Starting off his musical career, Sam became part of the group Technicolor Lenses, where he contributed in electronic production and also played guitar. They released their first album New Eyes, in 2011, with Sam releasing his solo debut EP Hair and Nails just 10 months later.

In 2016, Esseks got his big break with the release of his Ego Altar EP on the budding Wakaan label, spearheaded by Liquid Stranger. Fast forward just a few months later, and his single ‘Jank’ was included in the very successful Meanwhile Compilation album. Riding the ever-growing popularity of the label known for its dedication to curating sounds that defy genres, Esseks has found a home where he can truly pave his own path.

This theme is continued with the release of his new Broken Thought EP. Sporting 6 original tracks, this project is his 5th EP in the last 2 years. Taking your mind on a psychedelic journey, this work flows from melodic airy segments into crunchy grimey bass. The consistency between the tracks is marvelous, as the overall vibe that Sam went for was nailed spot-on. Each track melds smoothly into the next, leaving the listener wondering what could possibly be coming after.

Broken Thought is another high point in innovation for the music community as it shows that you should never be afraid to be unapologetically yourself.
