After two years of being cancelled due to COVID-19, Ever After Music Festival is set to return between August 12th and August 14th of 2022 at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds – a brand new location. Three days of bass-riddled festivities are promised for the event, with Ever After announcing their lineup earlier today and tons of names from the cancelled 2020 edition staying true to their booking. Headlined by Slander, Rezz, and Zeds Dead and Subtronics, the festival taps local and global favourites from the bass music scene to helm the event. Along with heavy acts such as Svdden Death b2b Eptic, Virtual Riot, Kompany, and many more, the house stage makes its highly-anticipated return with artists such as AC Slater, Nostalgix, Dr. Fresch and more joining the fun. The biggest surprise though, is the inclusion of Noisia. That is going to be a set for the books.

We can’t wait to attend. Register for ticket information here. The full line-up is listed below.

2020 has been a rough year for us all, especially in the music industry. COVID-19 has turned things upside down and everyone has been effected. Summer hasn’t quite felt the same with music festivals on pause. Offering a sense of community, deep connection with music, and a magical escape, they’re one of the biggest things fans are longing for. What the future holds for festivals is still largely uncertain but we are eagerly anticipating their return (once safe). In order to get a better outlook into the future of live events and more insight into the festival world, we connected with Gabriel Mattacchione, the founder of Ontario’s Ever After Music Festival. We spoke to him about finding longevity in the festival market, the ups and downs of being independent, COVID-19’s impact on events, his outlook for the future and much more. Check out our full conversation below.

We’ve seen a lot of festivals come and go in Ontario, what’s the secret to Ever After’s success and longevity?

I believe the secret to our success and growth is and always will be the focus on the attendee and their experience. We really believe in giving a true festival experience that provides much more than just music and talent on the stage as entertainment.

We have the ability to give the fans what they want as we listen to their feedback and suggestions. This gives the festival its own personality and vibe that gives it its own identity that can separate us from the rest.

Ever After is a completely independent event. What are the benefits of operating this way?

The benefits of operating and owning an independent festival are complete creative freedom. We have the ability to give the fans what they want as we listen to their feedback and suggestions. This gives the festival its own personality and vibe that gives it its own identity that can separate us from the rest.

What unique challenges have you had to overcome as a result of this independence?

I believe the biggest challenges we’ve had to overcome from being independent is competing against major corporations and blockbuster sponsor events. Independence relies on a trustworthy fanbase for support in order to execute competing aspects as ticket sales revenue is our lifeline and strict budgets must be adhered to in order to preserve longevity. This sometimes constricts our ability to give our fans everything we want to in a short time period.

When did you know that you would have to postpone Ever After to 2021? What factors shaped the final decision and announcement?

It really felt like it all happened overnight. As event producers and promoters it is in our natural DNA to do everything possible to make a show happen, and we are always in the mindset that the show must go on no matter what obstacle is in front of us. Postponement really became reality when it became clear how severe the situation truly was, and the only factor of importance was public safety – and not being able to provide that was all it took for our group to make the final decision.

What differences do you see between the industry in Canada and the US with regards to impacts of the pandemic?

Though there may be differences in regards to the impact of the pandemic between Canada and the US, and in some cases even province to province and state to state, I don’t believe there are major ones. The pandemic really has shut down our entire industry worldwide in what seemed almost overnight. I think the main differences really lie in the recovery process, some states have the luxury of more warmer months than Canadian provinces, which makes shifting planning efforts an easier task. Here in Canada, and specifically Ontario we do not have the luxury and the timing of the event and planning process must align for a summer month hosting.

What’s your outlook for the future of live music for the remainder of the year and early next year?

I believe we will not get back to what we all love and miss until there is a certified vaccine that can be distributed without interruption.

You can not truly obtain that festival experience through a screen in your living room.

Are you pursuing any digital oriented events? Why/why not?

We are currently not pursuing any digital oriented events because it is in my opinion that this goes against the experience we attempt to create and sell. You can not truly obtain that festival experience through a screen in your living room. I do believe that a digital aspect will be a part of live entertainment for future events but will never be the main source to obtain live entertainment.

How confident do you feel that Ever After will be back for 2021? What needs to happen to ensure this is a reality?

I feel confident that we will be able to bring Ever After to life in 2021, for this to happen I think a mass distribution plan for a vaccine will need to be in place through our governing bodies. Even with this in place we will likely have to adapt to new rules and new normals. Bringing festivals back next year will certainly be a collaborative effort not only from producers and city stakeholders alike, but also with the fans.

What changes do you expect to see in the music industry and live events space post-pandemic?

We are preparing for more on-site changes as we have already begun the planning process for 2021, we expect most of these changes will be in regards to sanitary issues and health regulations. We want to keep our events as safe as possible on all fronts and we are ready to embrace the changes that will allow us to execute a great festival.

The repurposing window for Ever After tickets is now open.

Since its debut, Ever After has been making major waves in the Ontario festival market. The inaugural line-up was so impressive that when it dropped people didn’t believe it was real (thankfully it was). Each year it’s been getting bigger and better. Today it serves as the strongest offering of bass music for any festival in the area. This year is no different, the bill is stacked with artists like Excision, Claude Von Stroke, Flux Pavilion, Snails, Kill The Noise, AC Slater, Zomboy & more. If that wasn’t enough they just added Downlink & Space Laces B2B and a DnB stage on Friday featuring Pendulum DJ Set, 1991 and many more. To get an inside look into Ever After we connected with the festival’s head organizer Gabriel Mattacchione from Beyond Oz Productions. We talk about what’s new for the fest, what sets Ever After apart, noise complaints, and more. Check out the interview below and don’t miss your chance to win a pair of tickets to the festival!

Stages are bigger and better…

What’s new and exciting for this year at Ever After?

Stages are bigger and better, interactive areas will have you lost in what the adventure truly is at Ever After, and more games and rides to enjoy when you’re not splashing around in our waterpark. Also MORE camping available both onsite and offsite grounds.

What is your goal with the festival?

My goal is to make Ever After bigger and more interactive year after year, catering to what the attendees truly want from a weekend experience. I want to utilize more of the Bingemans grounds as our numbers increase every year.

Are there any festivals that helped to inspire Ever After?

Tomorrowland has always been an inspiration for the creativity that goes behind Ever After. Tomorrowland, much like Ever After, is a place to get away from everyday stresses, camp out with your closest friends, and make new ones along with creating unforgettable memories.

From the minute you step onto the campgrounds, to the moment you look up at the stage and carnival rides, Ever After becomes a playground, your ultimate vacation.

What sets Ever After apart from other festivals locally?

Ever After is a true getaway festival experience that most festivals, both locally and afar miss. Other “festivals” take a multi-day concert approach, whereas we try to create this getaway land that you can get lost in, never having to or wanting to leave. From the minute you step onto the campgrounds, to the moment you look up at the stage and carnival rides, Ever After becomes a playground, your ultimate vacation.

Have you thought about moving the location due to the noise complaints/issues? What other location(s) would you consider?

Bingemans plays a great role in creating our experience and atmosphere in what is Ever After. This being said, we can bring the flavor of Ever After to any venue we decide meets the criteria to hold our adventure.

We don’t like to put criteria around artist bookings as music is always evolving and changing. You can’t cookie cutter a thing like your bookings

How involved are you in determining the line-up? What is the criteria for booking an artist at Ever After?

I am involved in everything Ever After is from A-Z. I personally touch every aspect of the event along with key members of my team in their respective departments. We don’t like to put criteria around artist bookings as music is always evolving and changing. You can’t cookie cutter a thing like your bookings. It gets looked at and revisited every year.

This year the line-up tends to skew more dubstep heavy than ever before. Can you speak to this?

We try to book what’s hot and what our fans want to see. This, along with personal tastes and opinions has sculpted Ever After into the bass festival it is today.

If I could list every name here I would, but it is always a pleasure to see Excision do what he does best. Also excited to see Kayzo as well as Zomboy b2b Skism rip up the main stage this year!

Who are you most excited to see this year?

If I could list every name here I would, but it is always a pleasure to see Excision do what he does best. Also excited to see Kayzo as well as Zomboy b2b Skism rip up the main stage this year!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Grab tickets ASAP to this unforgettable adventure as tickets are going to sell out for Ever After 2018! Limited quantities available before we have to think up some expansion plans to the venue.

2018 has barely begun, and we’re already getting announcements for this year’s round of festivals! In Ontario, the first festival out the door is Kitchener’s Ever After Music Festival.

Taking place June 8th-10th at Bingemans, this year’s lineup has amusement park rides, a waterpark, and a slew of top-notch artists sure to unite bassheads and festivalgoers across the GTA (and beyond). All things combined, it’s set to be an entire weekend of music, fun, as well as potential neckbraces the following Monday.

Last year was well known for its back-to-back-to-back set, which featured Cookie Monsta, 12th Planet, and Funtcase. The good news is that such an experience will be making a return this year – what’s more is that this year will feature an additional 7 back-to-back sets on top of that:
–Flux Pavilion & Doctor P;
–Midnight T & Megalodon;
–Excision & Datsik (Sunday’s headliners);
-and Zomboy & Skism, to name a few.

Pure dubstep/Riddim aside, there’s also going to be features such as Hydee for some solid dnb action, Space Jesus & Liquid Stranger bringing some glorious space music, and Sullivan King, who knows the intricacies of the guitar like the back of his hand.

Those who are more into the house side of electronic music will be pleased to hear that Saturday will feature some of the best in the genre! Claude VonStroke will be headlining on Saturday, along with a wide variety of variations of house. From French bass house sensation Dombresky, to the return of Daniel Portman, whose groovy set was much-talked about after last year’s festivities, to AC Slater bringing his Night Bass vibe to the grounds, there’s an entire afternoon of shuffling and g-stepping for those itching to do so.

There’s also a petition going around to help justify sound levels & curfew for the festival, which have proposed changes after last year caused a surge in noise complaints on the final evening. Considering how much energy everybody put into the Sunday closers, Zeds Dead, it’s not all too surprising, though – yet one can only hope that the residents and festivalgoers can come to an acceptable agreement.

The first weekend in June saw Ever After Music Festival take over Bingeman’s Park and Campground for its third annual installment. This year was my first time attending the event. Despite consistently impressive line-ups, I was always left wondering if the trip to Kitchener was worth the effort. With this year’s insanely stacked line-up I decided it was due time to find out. This year’s edition proved to be well worth the trip and demonstrated that Ever After is a true competitor for best festival in Ontario. From the stages, to the music and all of the extras, Ever After was definitely a weekend to remember. Read below for a deeper dive into each of the elements.

The Stages

Ever After was built around 3 stages. The Excalibur stage, The Oculus Realm and The Ontario Stage. The Excalibur stage was your typical main stage. Taking over a parking lot, it meant a sprawling concrete dance floor. With massive speakers and killer screens for artists’ visuals, it delivered what we’ve come to expect from a main stage experience. Confetti canons, flame throwers and fireworks for the headliners helped to kick things up a notch. The Oculus Realm was a slightly smaller offering with a more intimate and special feel. The stage and dance floor was surrounded by canopies of trees making it feel like you were partying in an enchanted forest. Rounding things out was The Ontario stage; a bus converted into a fire-breathing dragon, equipped with some bumping speakers that played host to a wide array of local talent. Despite it being the smallest of the stages its uniqueness and fire bursts made it an area of interest all weekend long.

The Music

The most important element of any music festival is, of course, the music itself. This is easily where Ever After excels most. The line-up was a dream come true for bass heads with legendary headliners Bassnectar, Excision and Zeds Dead along with heavy-hitters like NGHTMRE, TroyBoi, Herobust, Zomboy, Snails, Ghastly, Destructo and more. There was way too much awesomeness to go into every set, but we’ve listed a few highlights below.

Bassnectar

Bassnectar is an artist who constantly proves he is deserving of being a headlining act. His sets are a transcendent journey through genres, mixing in elements of hip-hop, trap, dubstep and some serious bass. His visuals are top notch and hypnotizing, taking the experience to new heights. Bassnectar has built a cult following and his live sets are a clear reminder as to why. The high-energy set was the perfect conclusion to a strong Day 1.

Excision

Excision’s set truly brought out all of the bass heads. Easily the most packed of the entire weekend, Excision showed why he is a legend. With a barrage of bass, he proved that dubstep is as strong ever, setting the crowd on fire with every drop. His visuals were some of the best I’ve ever witnessed with numerous fans buzzing about them online and in person.

Zeds Dead

Local favourites Zeds Dead were the perfect finale for Day 3. Their set, like their most recent album, spanned genres from future bass and trap, to DnB and dubstep. They moved between the sounds with ease like the seasoned veterans they are, adding in the perfect sample or layering in that key track to punch things up a notch. Vocals from Drake and Kendrick Lamar had the crowd singing along before getting obliterated with bass.

TroyBoi

Easily one of the standouts from the Oculus Realm, TroyBoi delivered one of the most diverse and exciting sets of the festival. It centered largely around his own originals and reworks and he even blessed fans with a couple of insane unreleased track. Playing to the festival vibe, he also snuck in crowd favourites like TNGHT, ASAP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar and Carmack’s remix of ODB. His energy was infectious; dancing in between mixing and getting the crowd hyped.

This unreleased @TroyBoiMusic is sounding insane! pic.twitter.com/MHR5XqCDN3

— FUXWITHIT (@FUXWITHIT) June 4, 2017

Herobust

Herobust’s latest EP was aptly entitled Vertebreaker. It seems the title is also the mantra for his live sets as he delivered a relentless barrage of neck breakers. From the moment he stepped on stage the crowd began to pour in and he kept the intensity up, mixing his signature trap meets dubstep sounds with cuts from both genres. Adding to the awesomeness of his set, it was actually extended an extra hour as it seemed OT Genesis was running late. As his original set finished, he brought out a slew of homies including Yookie, Crankdat and more to demolish the stage for an epic impromptu b2b.

Snails

By far the biggest and craziest set to take place at Occulus Realm. Snails die-hard fan base was on display with a large portion of the crowd repping his merch. For fans of hard-hitting dubstep his set was a dream come true. The set opened up one of the biggest mosh pits of the weekend, taking up the majority of floor.

Games & Activities

Along with the music, Ever After offered a range of rides and activities. They had a midway that included a scene-setting Ferris wheel and a few spinning rides to rattle your brain (if the music wasn’t enough for you). The midway also included some classic games with prizes available. On the back side there was a number of inflatable activities for anyone looking for some further gaming.

Food & Drink

Food options at Ever After were typical of a festival of its size. There were a ton food trucks serving up pizza, poutine, tacos, hamburgers, jerk chicken and more. There was also carnival staples like ice cream, funnel cake and cotton candy. Free water stations were available although there could’ve been a station closer to the main stage. For those of age, a few alcohol options were available including, beer, cider and mixed drinks. One complaint (and this is for all festivals) is the lack of beer variety, with Coors Light and Canadian as the only options. Line-ups for alcohol were generally quite short, which is always a huge plus.

Ever After Is Here To Stay

Ever After was a stellar start to 2017’s festival season. The line-up and performances were nothing short of incredible. With 3 stages and strong attendance it’s clear that Ever After has some serious staying power. If you’ve yet to hit Ever After because it seems too far or out of the way, I can assure you it’s well worth the trip. I met people who traveled from Montreal, Edmonton and the US and every single one seemed very content with their decision to do so. With the strength of Ever After it looks like Toronto has some serious competition when it comes to festivals.
