It’s safe to say that April 2024 has been polarized by one news piece and one release. The big news was, of course, the unveiling of Symmetry’s lineup. For those of you who’re not aware yet, Symmetry Music & Arts Festival is set to be the event of the year when it comes to wave. Presented by the legendary vibe.digital team together with production company Lucid Journeys, this two-day festival will turn Iowa into the epicenter of the scene on the 13th and 14th of September. Plastician, brothel. , barnacle boi, Deadcrow, REMNANT.exe, Gladkill are just some of the wave heroes who will play along heavyweight of the bass music scene such as UZ, Off The Trees, Ravescoon, A Hundred Drums, Sippy Fly, Onhell, Eastghost. With such a strong and unique lineup, Symmetry is positioning itself as the benchmark alternative for all those bassheads who are, quoting Ravescoon himself, “tired of cookie cutter music festivals” With more than 80% of the early birds gone already, this might be the right time to grab yours.

Talking instead of releases, April will go down as the month that saw the release of one of the best compilation albums of the year. Curated and released by Interval Audio, hands down the best compilation-dealer in the game, Neo Subculture 3 is a 33-track masterclass in Wave, Hardwave, Trance, and Neo Trance. With 46 artists involved, it is a comprehensive testament to the power of this artistic community that never stops opening their hearts and minds to the unknown to redefine the boundaries of these genres. Due to the relevance of this album, I decided to reserve five spots on this month’s playlist for extracts from Neo Subculture 3. You’ll find them mixed among singles from familiar faces as tearsofmine, enjoii, KTrek (via vibe.digital), Klasey Jones, Pholo, SBU, but also newer names like nibiru’, FQYL, kub0, Michiya Mirai, anølemma and many more. In case you’re wondering, yes, there’s a Juche release this month as well.

If it wasn’t for Tiesto randomly spinning some drum&bass on UMF mainstage or Four Tet going wild at every show, the festival season would have felt like a lazily scripted Netflix series so far. While we wait to sound out the tracklists of the two Coachella weekends, Bootleg Business is here to spice things up.

This month, my guest is a true bootleg master, someone who dares to lurk in the depths of the web, looking for forgotten gems and who is not afraid to drop an Ariana Grande and Aphex Twin mash-up in the middle of a set. I’m talking about Ramon Pang of course. I’m pretty sure he needs no introduction, but just in case, he’s a left-field dance producer based in LA, self-proclaimed “lover and documentarian of all things trap music and 90s intelligent dance music” and, I’d like to add, the most hardcore Four Tet fan you’ll ever meet. He co-heads Tabula Rasa Records, a record company and a community that you need to know if you’re into “braindance” or IDM if you want to call it (preorder their new compilation here). You can also catch him sharing tons of interesting stuff on his Twitter, pretty much any day of the week. I was definitely expecting a more obscure selection from Ramon but these dancefloor-oriented picks left me utterly satisfied. Fun fact: there was a one-in-a-million chance and it still happened, originally we both included Falldren’s bootleg in our selection.

Flosstradamus – Total Recall (Falldren Flipped)

The original is so nostalgic for me. I was in a Siscord voice chat with Falldren a year ago and offhandedly said that someone needs to flip ‘Total Recall’ into hardwave and it would be a mainstage hit. He whipped this up in 2-3 hours and published it without thinking too hard about it. But, six months later, I was there live when RL Grime dropped it at Porter Robinson’s Second Sky Fest and when Skeler dropped it as his LA debut at Brownies & Lemonade. That’s every bootlegger’s dream. It’s so deserved – it’s a tidal wave of a track.

SBU – Deep Love

To match the majestic vibes of ‘Total Recall’ I needed to bring up a banger of the same magnitude. Staying in wave territories, the choice was easy. Freshly released just a month ago, SBU’s brutal flip of Calvin Harris and Disciple’s ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ has caused quite a turmoil within the scene. In particular, I heard it literally destroyed Pantheon‘s dancefloor back in December. In case you’re a nerd like me, the pre-drop vocals are from a breakout monologue included in the movie ‘Closer’.

Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan – Rumble (Kinoteki Footwork Jungle Edit)

The crew at Tabula Rasa Records are very good at blurring the line between cheekiness and sincerity. When the Rumble bootleg craze was going on, Kinoteki came out the gate with this beautiful Lone/Machinedrum-inspired melodic flip. I don’t know how serious they were when making this, but it doesn’t really matter – the way it rollercoasters is hypnotizing. I play it live a lot.

deadmau5 – strobe (dossyx edit w/ charlie)

Talking about bootleg crazes, Strobe is another masterpiece that received its massive dose of remixes, both official and unofficial. While I despise pretty much every version I run into so far, I have to say dossyx and Charlie have nailed the task. The mood couldn’t be more different than the original, but in the end the bouncy and crispy groove match very well the iconic melody. Kawaii bounce is probably the most fitting term to label this edit, will camoufly agree?
– A

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1439869684″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

O’Flynn – Cardi Tool

I’ve loved O’Flynn’s blissful breaks and percussion-driven house on Ninja Tune before, and had no idea he had a Cardi B remix. Good internet friend from the Four Tet fan discord (I own the server, obviously) shared this one day and it was an instant save. In my sets, it’s such a cheat code: 1) super blendable 2) super effective in my deeper underground sets, and 3) a real driver in my more mainstream-leaning ones.
– RP

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXfXvNgHd0]

SoSick (KH version)

This one has been sitting on my PC for so long that I completely forgot how it got here. All I remember is that at a certain point (2018 or 2019 probably) Four Tet went wild on SoundCloud dropping a ton of unreleased material altogether. Why? I’ve no idea. I could do some research on my own, but since I have a living Four Tet-encyclopedia as the guest of this episode I thought it was more fun to ask him directly. Would you mind tweeting more info about this edit Ramon? Anyway, this is the perfect bootleg for those situations when the audience wants to sing along to some well know lyrics but you want to dance along to some classy groove.
– A

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8mt9H6gWGM]

Overmono – So U Kno (Villager Mix)

Villager turned Overmono’s biggest anthem into a bass-fueled monster. Like the ‘Cardi Tool’ one, it’s been effective in every set I’ve played it in. I think it really fits my modus operandi – I love tracks that take the best parts of traditional club-ready house/techno, then fuse it with energetic, traditional ‘EDM’ sounds in a restrained way. I think that translates into my music always.

Chris Lake & Green Velvet – Deceiver (Gaszia Edit)

It’s not that I DJ very often, but I swear that even I was getting tired of playing ‘Deceiver’. The original is a killer tune, nothing bad to say, but after rinsing it dozens of times I was desperately looking for an alternative version. I then turned to SoundCloud where I surprisingly found this edit by the one and only Gaszia. Way better than Chris Lake’s VIP.

TWRK – Living Room (Tielsie Remix)

Bit of a fringe pick here… this flip is almost 10 years old but it’s still one of my all-time favorites. On one hand, it sounds like a product of its time (2014), especially the clean 808 and the stereotypical trap/footwork drums. Listen to the original and then compare it to this flip’s take on its main melody… the way it’s chopped is so skillful and virtuosic.

Kanye West vs. Lucio Battisti – Love Lockdown (Nastro Rosa Edit)

This is one of my most secret guilty pleasures. I’m warning you, explaining it in words it won’t make any sense: it’s a mash-up between Kanye’s quintessential ‘Love Lockdown’ vocals and the instrumental of ‘Nastro Rosa’, a song by Lucio Battisti, one of the most beloved Italian singer-songwriter and composer of the 1970s. Genious idea, perfect realization, immaculate vibes.

What a year has been for wave live shows! After record-breaking events in Russia, Poland, UK, and The Netherlands, the grand finale of this already memorable 2022 is happening in none other than in the United States. This weekend, from December 1-3, Seattle is going to be the world capital of wave music. Brought to life by the brilliant teams behind Human Error//, vibe.digital, and Soul Food Music Collective, Pantheon is set to be the largest gathering of wave artists in the US ever.

OTHERWRLD is more than just a community, it’s a movement pushing the love for electronic trap in the right direction. Highlighting some of the best up-and-comers within the underground while becoming a real safe haven for all electronic music fans. Born within Discord, an artist named BAARIC had an idea for something truly extraordinary. Creating the group formally known as TRAP COMMUNITY, the title alone was a symbol of inspiration and creative freedom. Containing souls who can come together as one with similar interests and passions within the industry. Becoming a part of a remarkable vision. They’ve even hosted special q&a’s with legends such as REMNANT.exe, Rossy, and even Boombox Cartel! And in time, OTHERWRLD was born. Now, with their debut mixtape, SURGE, the community banded together to create one of the most unique and hard-hitting compilations of 2022.

SURGE is a love letter to its community’s beginnings while honoring the electronic trap genre to the highest degree. Artists such as 2Spade, AKIRA KHAN, BLVDE RUNNER, Hontis and many more have all created individual masterpieces to contribute. And it’s very safe to say each artist gave it their all. Not only did they deliver fresh new sounds and qualities, but they managed to showcase the true meaning of this journey as a whole. From nasty drum patterns to hypnotizing sound design, it’s an unpredictable adventure full of addictive qualities.

After the first track listeners will be automatically hooked and eager to hear what’s next. Experiencing a constant flow of energy and passion. It’s compilations like this that really make you feel proud you’re alive to witness the birth of a new chapter. We’re excited to hear what’s next for the group and we’ll be keeping a close eye on them! So make sure to show your support by streaming SURGE everywhere via OTHERWRLD!

New month, same feature bringing you the five best fresh finds you should be listening to. Focus Five: Volume 55 features a bouncy house producer keeping summer alive, an alchemist who fuses genres, a producer who effortlessly moves between rap and electronic, Singapore’s latest electronic export, and some sinister halftime. As always there’s a producer in here for whatever your sound palette or mood. Dive in below.

avon

Looking to keep the summer going a little longer? avon‘s last few house cuts have you covered. The artist’s sound has all the bounce and brightness of future beats with an addictive house groove. I came upon avon with ‘whip’ and was instantly impressed. The stuttered and looped vocals provide the backbone as smooth bass and dizzying melodies drift over top. ‘rockit’ features some…interesting… sample choices but the vibe is immaculate. Completing the trifecta of recent releases comes the producer’s best work yet, ‘coamoa’ with zulu. Absurdly infectious and effortlessly upbeat this one is assured to have your serotonin spiking and your feet moving. With just over 200 followers and very little info online not much is known about avon, other than the fact that they’re definitely an artist to look out for.

Falldren

If his brand new EP, Second Destiny, is a taste of what we can expect from Falldren from here on out, I seriously believe it won’t be long before you’ll find him back on the pages of FUXWITHIT. I wasn’t familiar with this San Francisco-based producer until earlier this month when my Twitter timeline got flooded with retweets from Yama, Soul Fool Collective, w/out about the release of the aforementioned EP. With Second Destiny, Falldren takes on the role of an alchemist who plays, tests, and experiments, with genres in search of new, unheard combinations. Take ‘Shutdown’ for example. It starts wave, then midway it switches to future garage and it closes with house rhythms. What kind of magic is this? Or ‘Aeris,’ where electrifying hardwave leads combine with phonk-like vocals. What transpires from this latest project, definitely his best to date, is Falldren’s desire to make this fluid approach his strong point with which to carve out his own space in the scene. I will be there to watch every step, what about you? Be sure to stream Second Destiny and check him live at Pantheon festival on the 2nd and 3rd of December.
As one-half of H31R, the producer’s frantic beats creates a unique backdrop for maassai’s blistering bars. On her own, JWords explores the disparate worlds of music through projects focused on dance music, experimental electronic music, and rap. Just this year, the beatmaker dropped a diversified catalog of projects including the introspective electronic album Self-Connection and a bouncy three-track EP called DancePackVol.3. A champion of uplifting other Black women, JWords is also a frequent collaborator of Nappy Nina. Last year, the two artists dropped Double Down, leading up to their latest single together, ‘Amen.’
Those qualities and much more are what you’ll find within the discography of nujioh. Their everlasting skills through sound have proven to be nothing but memorable and heart-wrenching. Hailing from Singapore, their journey has flourished throughout the underground. From dabbling in many styles of the electronic realm to opening up a whole new world through their compositions, the possibilities are endless due to unpredictable tactics and surprises. Always delivering a fresh new environment with every release!

One of their newest tracks, ‘BAWO’ is a bright dystopia of dreams and mystery. Together with boxkitty, they carefully crafted a track enhanced with abilities beyond belief. From a distorted sonic field to earth-shattering sound design, you’ll be lifted off your feet from beginning to end. Leaving a sense of empowerment and curiosity. Representing their powerful friendship and bond through frequency. nujioh’s latest remix of umru and Ravenna Golden’s ‘speaker’ simply takes your breath away. Honoring the original to the highest degree, the artist showcases pure evolution within their style while giving the audience a taste of what’s to come in the future. High piercing drums, top tier melodic structures, it’s a gift that keeps on giving from each listen. And the distorted bass samples throughout leave you with a huge smile. Creating feelings of inner peace and inspiration. So you definitely won’t want to miss out on what’s to come.

A shoutout from Chee and an inclusion in Noisia Radio via Jon Casey is all we need to take notice of Ranz. The Montreal-based artist with less than 500 SoundCloud followers recently released the monstrous Foundation EP via Wormhole Music Group, and the swagger-filled ‘Honey Time’ earned early support from a couple of FUXWITHIT favourites. Diving deeper into Ranz’s repertoire revealed an impressive knack for making sinister halftime beats, with an additional two-track project on Sound Museum demonstrating that consistently rugged approach. With mixes dating back to 2016, it appears that Ranz has been in the scene for a few years, but has recently showcased a production talent that is worth watching closely. If halftime is your jam, don’t sleep on Ranz.
