Floor Fillers: Five Picks From Effin

Over the last few years, Effin has solidified himself among the top innovators in the realm of bass music, carving his own lane in an often-saturated sea of sound. Last week, the artist unveiled his debut album, Cheap Thrills, where he further showcased his ability to push boundaries over the span of thirteen diverse tracks. From his typical dubstep-leaning style in tracks such as ‘Sorry’ and ‘Lessons,’ to refreshing, softer cuts such as ‘Divine’ and ‘Yesterdays,’ Cheap Thrills is a cohesive body of work that is sure to please a wide array of listeners. In the producer’s words, “Cheap Thrills is everything that Effin represents and will represent going forward. It’s an audio collage of hundreds of different sounds, styles, and influences slammed and crunched together.“

Slum Village – Fall In Love (Moody Good Remix)

This one needs no introduction. Perhaps the perfect execution of a remix. A masterclass in sound design and arrangement.

Apashe & High Klassified ft. Cherry Lena – I’m Fine (IMANU Remix)

One of the most talented artists I know. The execution and attention to detail makes this one so much fun to listen to, impossible not to bounce around when the drop comes in. Perfect for keeping the crowd moving when the party is just getting started or late at night when things are winding down.

JOYRYDE – IM GONE

This tune is just ridiculous – a collage of styles wrapped together in one banger. JOYRYDE is unstoppable and I can’t wait to hear what else he’s been working on.

Getter – Represent

Another tune that just has undeniable bounce. This one continues to grow on me every time I listen to it, something so dirty about the drums that makes the whole thing hit hard. Boom bap combined with bass music at its finest.

Fergie – London Bridge

A staple in every Effin set. Whenever I have this tune queued up you can see me on stage with the biggest shit eating grin on my face. Such a fun song, and it just happens to mix right into drum and bass. A party starter from The Duchess herself.

Floor Fillers: Five Picks From Chee

A constant innovator within the realm of bass music, Chee has slowly grown into one of the greats in the scene. Boasting a sound that can be so grueling that it can shatter foundations, or so intricate that it can send shivers to your core, Chee is a one-of-a-kind artist that can seemingly do it all.

Following the release of the hypnotizing concoction that is ‘Spangled‘ in early October, the artist returned to Deadbeats last week with ‘Act Like You Know.’ Unsurprisingly, the cut is a quintessential Chee brute that is relentlessly unapologetic in its approach. Accompanying the track is the news that a third Chee x Deadbeats project is due out in February 2023, and if the first two singles are any indication, we can be sure to witness continued inventiveness.

If you haven’t been following along, we’ve recently revived our Floor Fillers series to allow fans to get different insight into the artists they love. For those who can’t catch a live set, or those who have caught one and just want to relive those moments, we’ve asked some of our favourite artists for five tracks that they love to spin in their sets. For this edition, we’re stoked to have Chee, a FUXWITHIT and personal favourite, share a handful of tunes that he can not do without. Check them out below.

Shades – Exultia

Don’t even know where to start with this. First time I heard this track was Lightning In A Bottle 2019 and I vividly remember my jaw dropping at the weight of the bass and simplicity of the structure. Shades (and both Eprom & Alix Perez separately) have mastered the art form of “less is more.” You can hear everything and every sound counts.

Noisia – My World (Jon Casey Remix)

The wild part about this track is that I was with Jon when he was working on certain sections of this. The pocket and off-kilter groove of this entire song still has me speechless and has been stuck in my sets for a decent amount of time. Be on the lookout for Jon Casey, this man is up to something.

Mr. Carmack – Faults

This track is one of the reasons ‘Act Like You Know’ exists. It may have been my first introduction to the 120 BPM trap, and the melody has been an earworm for me for years. Carmack has marked his territory in the trap game since the early SoundCloud days and is the perfect example of “f* around and find out” in the studio.

Jimmy Edgar – BENT (feat. Hudson Mohawke)

This is another track that helped birth ‘Act Like You Know’. During the pandemic I discovered Jimmy Edgar and instantly questioned everything I knew about production. The OG project file was called (bent_type_beat) due to the fact that I used this as reference and no matter how many times I’ve heard it, it never gets old. Jimmy Edgar is light years ahead when it comes to physical modeling synthesis and I still have yet to wrap my head around how on earth he comes up with everything he makes.

Sleepnet – First Light

Sleepnet has easily become one of my most listened to artists this past year and it might be because it’s one of the members of Noisia. The title track has rewired the way I’ve approached sound design and I can’t recommend the entire EP enough because it may still be my favourite piece of music that has come out within the past year.

Floor Fillers: Five Picks From Protial

Floor Fillers is back! Five tracks hand-picked by the artists we all love.

Over two years ago, we had the opportunity to connect with the mysterious Protial for an eclectic guest mix and insightful interview. While the mix gave people a first taste of what a Protial live set could entail, the puzzling producer also stated that doing live shows “is honestly the dream and I have been preparing and collecting my favorite music for years now.” Fast-forward to today, and Protial just closed out a 10-day support run alongside Black Carl! and Saka (with a couple more shows still to come). The artist has been putting out consistently unique music since 2016, and to see his dreams come to fruition is nothing short of inspiring.

Today, we are stoked to welcome the masked magician on our newest edition of Floor Fillers, where he shares five tunes that are a must in his sets. Don’t miss his picks below – and be sure to catch him live if you have the opportunity.

Erotic Cafe – Oscillate

‘Oscillate’ is one of the favorite tunes I have in my set. Its huge sub bass and upbeat breaks-ish drop is a great switch-up and is super refreshing.

voljum – Missile

‘Missile’ is a lesson in space and variation. Every time I dropped this when on tour with Black Carl and Saka I was reminded that every little rest is important. Plus that switch up in the second half of the drop is just too much fun.

Floret Loret – Mango Madness

What’s not to love? Mangos? I actually don’t really like mangos but this tune is so good. Sounds how I imagine how eating the last mango after an apocalypse would feel like. I love playing this one after my own tune ‘Trapped.’

IMANU – Whatever It Takes (Herzeloyde Remix)

Whenever I have an itch in my brain this one scratches it. In fact I do believe the sound at 00:42 is the hand of Herzeloyde reaching into my (and everyone who listens’) brain to scratch that itch.

Tsuruda – Copout Dub

The bass patch must have a bit of magic in it that commands people to move. Either that or it’s just Tsuruda being the genius he is. Regardless, it is so much fun feeling the bass fill a room.

Floor Fillers: Five Picks From Kraysh

Over the last year, Kraysh has finally been able to showcase his unique collection of originals in a live setting. From EDC Las Vegas to Ultra Music Festival to a handful of smaller shows, the talented artist is starting to get the recognition he deserves. While his musical output has been relatively low in recent months, the longevity of his tunes and his ability to put on wickedly entertaining sets has kept his momentum going. Having caught the artist live in February 2020 before the pandemic hit, I can personally attest to the diversity of his sets, with the artist playing everything from techno to dubstep.

As Kraysh is slated to perform in Toronto on July 23rd, we figured it would be appropriate to connect with the artist for our newest edition of Floor Fillers following the return of the segment last month with Moore Kismet. Featuring five hand-picked gems from the creative himself, this edition of Floor Fillers brings everything from the Harry Potter soundtrack to dubstep. John Williams – Hedwig’s Theme

There are endless gems to be found in John William’s discography. This is just one example of his genius. I draw huge melodic inspiration from his work and the movies he has scored.

Moore Kismet – A Wandering Chance

Love so much of Moore Kismet’s stuff, this one is so well done. Every time the second drop hits in particular I absolutely lose it. Insane.

KaTT – VR. TEMJIN

KaTT has some of the most original ideas I’ve heard in electronic music. This track is one of their many examples. Highly recommend checking out the album that this track is from – S//////AM3.

Svdden Death – Magic Armour

Heard this track back when it was unreleased and instantly loved it. The drop carries this really dark melodic energy that is reminiscent of the ‘Fall in Love’ Moody Good remix.

Skrillex – Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites

One of, if not my favourite song of all time. This song caused me to start producing. The sound design is so raw. I might be biased but I believe it obliterates any bass track today.

Floor Fillers: Five Picks From Moore Kismet

Floor Fillers is officially back. For those new to the site, or those who don’t remember the series that dates back to 2019, Floor Fillers is a feature where artists showcase five tracks that they have been rinsing on repeat, playing in their sets, or just generally enjoying. The series is a way for fans to get an inside look into their favourite artists’ repertoire, while artists have the opportunity to shoutout some of their idols or friends’ best works. It’s a fun, short feature that will surely help readers discover a ton of new music.

To reboot Floor Fillers, we have the extreme pleasure of having Moore Kismet share some of their favourites. As followers of Moore Kismet since 2018, it has been incredible to watch the astronomical rise of the young talent in recent years, seeing them evolve from an underground favourite into a mainstage superstar. Their list of accolades is endless, and spans beyond what most dream to accomplish in a lifetime. From major festival bookings, to iconic publication features, to a sync deal with Marvel (yes, you read that correctly), Moore Kismet is a star and we have loved following their journey thus far. With their debut album UNIVERSE set to release on June 24th, the future continues to look bright for the talented creative.

Rickyxsan – LOST + FOUND

‘LOST + FOUND’ was such a highly sought-after song when Ricky first debuted it in a few mixes he did. It was, and still is, one of my favorite songs he’s ever made.

Topi – Optical

‘Optical’ is easily one of the best house songs I’ve ever heard in my life. Everything Topi touches is so beautifully experimental, and regardless of genre, he always knows how to take basic ideas and turn them into complex masterpieces.

Moore Kismet & Chuck Sutton – Ultravoilet (feat. COOKIE.)

‘Ultraviolet’ holds so much importance to me because not only is super beautiful and weird in the best ways, but it’s an all-black collaboration that embraces the fusion of our signature sounds.

JoeB – Cackatones (with RoboD)

‘Cackatones’ in full is still unreleased to the general public, but when JoeB sent me some unreleased tunes for tour a while ago, I knew I to snag it when I got the chance. This has become a staple in the vast majority of my sets.

Voltra – Instance

When Voltra sent me one of the first WIPs of ‘INSTANCE,’ I knew it was destined to be a hit in the electronic scene. It’s such a beautiful fusion of tech and analog-influenced sound design and arrangements with insanely good drums to boot.

Floor Fillers: UZ Gives Us His Top 5 Tracks

From playing a key role in defining the trap genre, to pushing the sound forward with Quality Good Records, UZ embodies what it means to be a legend. The incredibly talented producer and DJ is a pillar in the scene who has released 2 incredible full length albums, multiple EPs and a whole lot of Trap Shit. Most recently he blessed fans with an incredible remix project for The Rebirth featuring some of the best rising talent and a few well-established names. FUXWITHIT Floor Fillers: AXEN Gives Us His Top 5

There is something about AXEN. Having only properly emerged onto the dubstep scene a year or so ago, he has signed with Circus Records and has an incredible number of remixes under his belt. To name a few, you can hear the Perth based producer’s inimitable style on works originally by the likes of BadKlaat and Slander. His Droid Bass EP really established his robotic signature sound earlier this year, and he has delivered an insanely sharp new single titled ‘Machine.’

With such a unique approach to creating beats, we had to find out the 5 Floor Fillers AXEN has in his musical arsenal. Check them out below and enjoy!

TC – ‘Tap Ho’

A timeless drum & bass classic that never fails to impress on the dance floor. It’s simple but very effective and still to this day is a staple in my DJ set. It was actually the very first drum & bass song I fell in love with.

Black Tiger Sex Machine x Apashe – ‘Replicants’ (Kompany Remix)

An amazingly well put together track: aggressive vibes and the switch ups between Brostep and Briddim styles keep the energy at an all-time high on the dance floor.

Herobust – ‘WTF’

A dubstep anthem that will make an entire crowd literally chant “WTF” over and over before the drop even starts. I got into producing bass music because of Herobust – what caught my attention was how innovative he is. I’m pretty certain majority of the sounds in that track were made from just his own voice saying “WTF” too!

PhaseOne & YOOKiE – ‘State Of Emergency’

This track is probably one of the most well executed tracks I’ve heard this year. I always look for tracks that keep things interesting and this one takes the cake. Everything from its transitions to the variations in all of the drops make this one a must-have.

G-REX – ‘Wook Blaster’

G-REX is on another level with his releases lately, ‘Wook Blaster’ is one those tracks you really need to hear out at a club, or better yet a festival system just to see and hear the crowd reaction – which is up there with one of the best I’ve seen.

FUXWITHIT Floor Fillers: oddprophet Shares His Selections

We’re grateful to oddprophet this week for joining us for our Floor Fillers feature. With his EP Precognition out now via Never Say Die, it’s undeniable that his crisp dubstep meets future style is going to keep winning fans across the globe.

The young talent may well be keeping his true persona a little way out of the spotlight, but his music is doing all the talking right now. Check out his 5 Floor Fillers choices below.

GRYM – ‘Ninja Blockz’

I’ve been playing out this tune and it got a huge reaction in Paris earlier this year. While it might be a kinda overdone, recycled riddim idea (taking influence from Subfiltronik’s anthem ‘Blockz’), the drop is just nasty, rolling and filthy. Big ups to Grym on his other tunes as well. As riddim goes, Grym is favourite at the moment.

Barely Alive – ‘Wompum’

This is by far the biggest on the album for me; the definition of an absolute head banger. Taking vibes from Badklaat – ‘Head Crush’, the Barely Alive boys have done the maths on how to make the crowd move with this one.

Pandorum & Ivory – ‘Knight Riderz’

I love this track, not only for the igniting opening bass and the all-encompassing quarter note screech, but the cherry on top is the “come on then!” vocal sample. Almost too much energy in this one to enjoy sitting down!

Tynan & Kompany – ‘Extraterrestrial’

The title does this one justice, it’s an out-of-this-world experience. Had to call out these boys for being absolute nerds in the SoundCloud comment section. They’ve created some unbelievable sound design. Hear for yourself, it’s another level.

Pane Mua – ‘Everything’

Seriously underrated song here, it makes me sad the play count hasn’t even hit five figures yet. I couldn’t get the main hook out of my head for days, so damn catchy and bouncy. It just puts a massive smile on my face. It’s the best song I’ve ever heard from him and it’s being massively slept on in my opinion. Out of all these tunes in this article, this one is a must-listen.

FUXWITHIT Floor Fillers: Ian Munro Gives Us Some Bassy Goodness

A flick through the tune catalogue of New Zealand’s bass/trap creator Ian Munro and it’s hard to not see what an extraordinary talent he has. With projects for the likes of Quality Goods regularly reaching the masses, make sure you don’t overlook wicked remixes for the likes of Mt Eden, UZ and QUIX.

MEMBA & Mothica – ‘Chasing Light’

The power and emotion in this track gets me every time. It’s not shy of sounding too ‘pop-y’ and it’s not shy of sounding too weird. MEMBA have been killing it recently.

Taska Black – ‘We Would Never Do’ (feat. Nevve)

I’m a big fan of what Taska does – and this track perfectly combines the energy of bass music and the musicality and emotion that it often lacks.

Rich The Kid – ‘Listen Up’ (prod. LMC & Danny Wolf)

Huge shoutout to the homie LMC representing NZ with this placement. Best track off the album in my opinion.

Illenium – ‘Leaving’ (AWAY Remix)

I have a lot of respect for anyone who does things differently. AWAY’s latest releases have been nothing short of impeccable and this remix is no exception.

Lemay – ‘Over Me’ (feat. Maize)

One of the more overlooked songs on his EP – this one is just too weird not to love. The rhythm and the synths shouldn’t work, but they do.

FUXWITHIT Floor Fillers: Delusion Gives Us His Five Weapons

Delusion is a bass producer with some serious flair, and he has just returned to the game after a production break for two years. His form shows no dip, with new track ‘Because Of You’ ft. Akacia sounding incredible.

The German artist is responsible for some killer remixes that first caught our attention; with edits for SG Lewis and Pham racking up incredible amounts of streams when they dropped a couple of years back.

With plenty of fresh material on the horizon, Delusion is one to watch this year as he continues to develop his creative signature style. He shares the five varied tunes he is currently rolling out with us – sit back and enjoy!

1) Chrome Sparks + Kllo – ‘I Just Wanna’

Chrome Sparks is able to combine modern and analog sounds to something really good. I really love the synth-work and the texture he creates within his tracks.

2) Taska Black feat. Ayelle – ‘Dead Inside’

Best track by him so far. Melancholic synthesiser pads paired with some trappy drums lead to something which sounds almost like a cinematic soundtrack.

3) Amir Obe – ‘Cigarettes’

Found Amir Obe a few days ago via Spotify. Really dope tracks.

4) Ben Khan – ‘2000 Angels’

I’ve been in love with Ben’s music for a few years and now he finally released something new.

5) Francis Novotny – ‘Hit & Run’

Not well known yet but I am sure this boy has a bright future ahead. Crisp vocals and creative production and sound design.
