Tiesto has released his first drum&bass song in over a decade, Brownies&Lemonade’s DNBNL project has partnered with Deadbeats and is going to Tomorrowland, Deadmau5 has played a D&B set at EDC Mexico, Chase & Status are once again one of hottest acts around, a new North American WORSHIP tour is about to kick off and Rohaan has just wrapped up another multi-week series of show in the States.

Now. I won’t say the phrase. Nor will I dust off the infamous hashtag (you know the one). I’m just being objective. The ball is rolling (pun intended) and this gives me a chance to throw myself into the fray with something that flirts with both culture and SEO. This month I bring back Bootleg Business with a massive drum&bass pack of 30 (unofficial) remixes that showcase pretty much everything the genre has to offer. Forget obscure cuts or hyper-sophisticated intellectual material though, this collection is strictly party-friendly. We have jump-up bangers, mainstage classic reworks, liquid rollers, ten-year-old remixes, ten-day-old remixes, weird bootlegs, and cheesy edits of pop songs. This Bootleg Business volume has it all. Rumble remix included.

Friendly reminder that this list doesn’t pretend to showcase the finest bootlegs around, nor the rarest. Music can be (just) fun, remember? This is an opportunity to have fun celebrating the art of unofficial remixes and, why not, a chance to find some new goodies to spice up your tracklists ahead of the festival season. As in the case of my summer special, the playlist is loosely divided into two parts. It starts with the heaviest cuts and it progresses into the more melodic tracks.

Have fun!

One of the biggest surprises on Skrillex‘s Quest For Fire, both in terms of the collaboration and in terms of the heat, was ‘Hydrate’ alongside PEEKABOO, Flowdan and BEAM. For Skrillex to tap one of the hottest vocalists out right now and one of bass music’s most promising stars in the same track is surely among the highest recognition PEEKABOO could ever desire. Since the release of the two albums, Skrillex has hinted that perhaps more is to come, while playing unreleased material throughout his shows this year.

Notable among this stash of unreleased goodies was a track that sounded like the aforementioned tune, but wasn’t quite it. Today, that track, titled ‘Badders,’ finally reaches the light of day, and sees the stacked lineup of ‘Hydrate’ return, swapping vocals from BEAM for added production flair from G-Rex. In short, ‘Badders’ is yet another brute that highlights the strengths of all involved. Carrying the flow that PEEKABOO has mastered while featuring key elements of each contributor, the cut is tailored to sound systems with a heavy sub. Flowdan’s lyrics sail smoothly over a bass-heavy undertone that gradually becomes nastier as it progresses (that crunchy bass in the latter half of each verse is just mean), and production swagger is ever-present from start to finish.

Don’t miss ‘Badders’ below.

What do you get when you mix one of the most promising drum and bass talents with one of the most exciting vocalists in recent times? The answer to this question is no joke.

At this point, Rohaan needs no introduction on FUXWITHIT. As a long-time favourite who has continuously impressed us with his range and originality, Rohaan’s momentum appears to be limitless. Since his HARD Recs debut in November, the artist has played a show in Mexico, a massive VISION event in Amsterdam, and more. Now, the accolades continue to pile up with a new release titled ‘Musket’ featuring vocals from the legendary Flowdan.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you understand how monumental it is to tap the veteran rapper for a few bars on a drum and bass cut. In ‘Musket,’ Rohaan lets Flowdan’s vocals shine without undermining the meticulousness of his own production. Grungy but not too heavy, the track flows seamlessly as both artists exude a natural chemistry by showcasing each other’s strengths. Don’t miss ‘Musket’ below.

Duke & Jones have been killing the game for the past few years. Over this span, they’ve showcased their diverse talent and ability to move across genres and sounds. Their most recent release ‘Reflection’ was a vibey house groove while their previous release ‘Hold On’ was a pop-leaning future bass bop. While their music doesn’t miss, we feel they’re at their best when they’re exploring a grittier sound. Track’s like ‘Jurrassic’ and their Deadbeats EP Solace are what we are truly craving from the dynamic duo. Who better to get them back to the gritty than grime legend Flowdan and Deadbeats? Out today ‘Trenches’ is everything you’d hope for from such a massive collaboration.

From grime, to dnb and dubstep, Flowdan’s iconic deep voice and razor-sharp raps are never anything less than captivating. Taking center stage on ‘Trenches’ the veteran emcee welcomes listeners to the terrordome before unleashing raw bars. Duke & Jones provide a dark and exotic sound palette that evolves with each passing bar. When Flowdan’s first verse concludes ‘Trenches’ descends into a cavernous bass-driven drop. From there Flowdan commands the beat with the militant precision of a true OG. Dark, filthy and anthemic, ‘Trenches’ is a masterful collaboration that demands repeat spins.

Welcome to Bass Boost! A new bi-weekly feature on FUXWITHIT showcasing creative, deep and underrepresented sounds in the realm of bass music. Though the music may vary widely by genre, expect a consistently fat low-end and unique feel to all the music promoted in this series. Aiming to highlight the vast amounts of worthy bass music not often found on charts, count on Bass Boost for something refreshing, unique and chest-rattling.

For the first installment of this series, I want to talk about a genre that has been steadily growing in popularity since the early 2000s in Europe and the UK especially, but remains mostly under-the-radar in North America; Grime. I will admit that when I first encountered this music years ago, I was off-put by the the rapping style; my sensitive North American ears being accustomed to hearing only a small variety of American dialects in rap music. After giving it some time and digging to find a few tracks that really did it for me, my opinion has completely changed. In the same way that American rappers use their local vernacular to stylize their own flow, grime music takes this practice to an international level. Paired with the permeation of dub music and Jamaican culture into British arts, I now see that there is a huge sub-genre of rap music that many in North America are missing out on. If you are a fan of rap and bass music as separate entities, grime may have something to offer you. Blending bass music production with a wide variety of rap styles, grime is an often overlooked genre that deserves more attention. With current artists like Skepta and Stormzy‘s names ringing out across Europe, I would think it’s just a matter of time before this truly grimy blend of bass and UK and European-style rap starts to gain momentum on the other side of the Atlantic.

To highlight the weight grime has to throw around, I turn to two big influences on the genre; a collaboration between well-known English producer The Bug and legendary grime MCs, Flowdan and Killa P. I first heard this track in a Zeds Dead mix years ago and looking back now, realize it was the primer I needed to be more open to exploring this genre in the future. With a MASSIVE beat courtesy of The Bug, proving that the influence of Jamaican culture on English music is still as prevalent as ever, Flowdan and Killa P utilize much Jamaican patois to flow their way through the song. ‘Skeng’ (meaning a knife or blade) is a heavy track with both a beat and vocals that individually could make a song complete. Released on The Bug’s album London Zoo in 2008 under Bonobo’s Ninja Tune label, this track has some serious power. Both The Bug and Flowdan are legends of the genre in their own right, and this track remains in my opinion, one of the best grime tracks out there.

For more check out THIS VIDEO of Flowdan tearing it up on RINSE FM‘s THE GRIME SHOW
