For the past year, Ayotemi has been on a mission to expand his Indigo Universe. Bestowed with the obligation to mend the needs of the people as if he’s a minister, the Maryland rapper takes this responsibility. His last single, ‘Peon’ is Ayotemi speaking positive affirmations to himself. His vocals layered together to create a “call and response” sensation. It’s a one-person therapy session, but it’s recognition of being everything he denied he was.

But as one problem wanes, another stands in the way of his dream. “I let down my defense/How am I supposed to leave you alone/In your heart I made a home,” every therapist who listens to the problems others, goes somewhere to be relieved of theirs. His latest success has created a rift. He’s traveling more, spending less time with her. Ayotemi attempts to reassure her that nothing has changed as the lifestyle surrounding him evolves in real-time. It’s a balancing act, and one of the chords tries to soften with each strum mirroring the pulsating strums of the drums.

Fully embracing his role of minister, there’s an understanding that the people won’t listen to someone they foresee themselves empathizing with. An image of perfection is only suitable for marketing purposes. But to warm the soul, being willing to let fans get a glare of the madness inside fosters that connection. ‘Letterman’ is a man who is finally able to love himself and return it to those guided through this journey. It’s gentle yet firm, transferring the affirmations from himself to his relationships.

In this fast-paced world we live in, it’s important to remember to slow down and take a quick breath, and that’s just what Maryland native Ayotemi’s ‘peon’ reminds us to do. Although hailing from Maryland, the young talent’s Nigerian roots shine through and provide the foundation for his soulful take on hip-hop with influences ranging from Afro-Beat to R&B. Beyond coming with a truly unique take on hip-hop, Ayotemi has worked with FUX favorite Foolie $urfin with their record ‘New Jam’ and we’re excited to see them collaborate again on this track as well as the upcoming Indigo Rap album. Taking all of this into account, you know we had to walk you through Ayotemi’s latest, ‘peon,’ which is out now via Good Society.

Stay Grounded, Stay Golden. Mountains and rivers will move over you.

AYOTEMI, ‘PEON’

Right out the gate, we’re met with this wavy synth that we ride throughout the intro before the voice of Ayotemi finally peaks through the mix. The opening seconds of the first verse are a perfect example of Ayotemi’s versatility. An off-kilter flow that perfectly fills the spaces between the ever-increasing percussion elements perfectly is soon interrupted by a switch-up that offers a smoother ride along with the beat as its drops. Effortlessly switching from singing to falsetto and back to rapping is something to marvel at, and ‘peon’ has plenty of that lying within. Check out the whole thing down below!

Monday’s have a lot going against them. The weekend is over, the return to reality is here and the next weekend is as far away as it can be. Most people hate Monday’s but one platform has been tirelessly working to change the perception from dreaded to anticipated. Every so often Lucid Monday appears on the scene with a compilation so stacked it’ll make you ready to skip over the weekend just to get your hands on it. LM025 proceeds to live up to the hype and high bar set by their previous releases. With 20 tracks from Chromonicci, Dilip & Otxhello, olswel, Dabow x L*o*J x LYNY, Louis Futon, Foolie $urfin, aedfx., Evil Needle, enuar & kas, and so many more, this is an absolute must-listen. The vibes are immaculate and the slaps are in abundance. From front to back it’s a showcase of the next wave of exceptional talent.

Seeing Dabow, L*o*J, & LYNY on a track is enough to get any trap heads heart-pumping. ‘OG’ does not disappoint illustrating why they are 3 of the best out. The vocal is hypnotic and the track takes you into another dimension. From classic trap to mind-bending sound design, brutish bounce, and even a hazy, dripped out finale, it never stagnates and just keeps getting better.

Chill bangers seem like an oxymoron until you experience them for yourself, and then they’re all you want to hear. Evil Needle’s ‘Lift Off’ presents the tranquility of chilling on a tropical beach with a banging drop to take you to the beach club before allowing you to fully unwind and enjoy the breeze. You can practically taste the Mojitos and smell the saltwater dripping off this one.

Just in time for ‘Springszn’ comes the aptly titled collab from enuar & kas. Light and airy, it’s the audio equivalent of that first summer-like day after a long winter. The synths warm your skin like sun rays. The steel drums wash away any worries and replace your stress with a feeling of elation. Smiles, slow hip-swaying and smashing replay are the only things on the menu for ‘Springszn.’

Start your week off right with Lucid Monday’s LM025 and remember that Mondays aren’t all bad.

As another month comes to a close, we are back as always bringing you five new talents that you need to put on your radar. This month features a promising trap producer, an impressive producer/vocalist/songwriter, some spring ready future beats, Nosia approved experimental bass and a producer bringing those the dark, granular soundscapes and titillating basslines. Dive in below.

FAIRSMOOTH

As we grow into the second half of 2020, the search for raw trap only becomes more vigorous. Those SoundCloud artists with less than 2k followers vibe. Contributing to my finds recently from a Partica Artist Group live stream, I discovered FAIRSMOOTH. At the time I discovered this track ‘NIGHTWATER,’ to realize it was the only one he had posted to his SoundCloud. Naturally I had to search for contact information to inquire further about this project as I was hungry to hear more. FAIRSMOOTH is a producer based out of Manchester UK who has been producing a little over three years now, with a background in playing guitar. Listening through his single track multiple times, his percussion arrangement is comparable to the smell of an ogre, it’s just nasty. Paired with this is a melody so clean I’m certain it just stepped out of the shower. Being able to fuse these different textures are what is going to allow him to stand apart. You’d be silly to think I didn’t ask him to hear more, and I cannot express enough how important it is to follow him now.

Foolie $urfin

Earlier this week Bonsai Collective dropped an incredible compilation featuring some of the best future beats artists out right now. Among the several standout tracks was Foolie $urfin‘s ‘crashindacoup’. Combining an upbeat future bounce with smooth Masego-like vocals was nothing short of special. A quick scan of his SoundCloud made it clear that we’ve been sleeping on this immensely talented producer/vocalist/songwriter. This year alone Foolie $urfin dropped his debut vocal album All Of Me and remixes and stuff vol.2. The two projects illustrate the breadth of his talents. The former is a moody body of work that mixes future R&B, trapsoul, and hip-hop. The latter sees him crafting forward-thinking flips on rap hits from Drake, Cardi B, Roddy Ricch and more. Foolie $urfin’ is on a wave right now.

Holographic

Not many can say that their first project, ever, got the support from industry giants Noisia. Demonstrating that they constantly have their ear to the ground, the Netherlands-based legends have once again put us onto up-and-comers worthy of praise. London-based Holographic doesn’t have much material under their belt, but their tunes hint at years of experience. Driving a halftime sound meticulously laced with soul-penetrating melodies and effects, the mysterious producers have released their debut EP exclusively on Bandcamp, with only a couple of tracks appearing on their SoundCloud. Dive into their experimental signature in ‘Fancy Candles’ and ‘The Escape’ below and be sure to keep a close eye on Holographic.

Mʌx

It’s the spring, the awakening of nature and the need for joy and positivity, and it seems that everyone is all about the future beats and future trap sound lately. Well, I see you, I hear you and here I am delivering you your monthly dose of fresh beats. Mʌx aka Max Holland nearly slipped under my radar if it hadn’t been for camoufly, and let me honestly say: now I owe him one. Rarely over the 2 minutes, Mʌx’s tracks aren’t long journeys to experience nice and slow, but packed jams to enjoy in one single bite. From piano arpeggios to synthetic synths, from jazz interludes to fat trap kicks, they are always an eruption of creativity that also holds tiny little details which are super fun to discover, listen after listen. His three newest track has come after what apparently has been a one year hiatus, but now that I had a taste of his music I really hope Mʌx is here to stay and delight us with more future gems.

worth

Oregon’s worth is as veiled and ambiguous in identity as the dark, granular soundscapes and titillating basslines he composes. Rostered to Portland’s Go To Your Room Records, worth has played a pivotal role in the development of the imprint label, while making routine audible contributions to the Detention Compilations with single releases ‘Slept’ and ‘Access Code’. A developing catalog of solo efforts such as ‘Of Serpents’ and ‘Oceanside’ depict a production discipline and sound design utility that only heightens the anticipation for future projects from worth.

“With the release of our debut roster compilation Hayashi (meaning “woods”), our goal was to illustrate the various landscapes that one can find in the solace of the trees, and the emotions they invoke. Whether it’s the comfort provided by the stillness of pine, the mournfulness of the weeping willow, or the harmony and balance found in the comfort of the bonsai, we hope to transcend you to a place you find peace on our walk through the woods.” The words accompany the release of BONSAI’s latest compilation and provide the perfect foundation for what to expect. Much like nature, music has a way of connecting with us on a deeper plane; moving us emotionally, changing the way we feel and giving us life. Hayashi does just that over the span of 12 future-leaning tracks.

Starting strong is BONSAI co-founder capshun’s ‘FREAKOUT.’ The track is classic capshun; combining epic builds and breaks with forward-thinking plucks and knocking percussion. Fellow curators Afrosamuraiist & Sasha Rome follow with the vibe rich ‘The Abyss’ and the housey ‘Endure’ respectively. spüke’s ’emanate’ provides lush and futuristic bass lines that make it instantly addictive. ‘crashindacoup’ delivers some serious Masego vibes as Foolie $urfin’ pairs smoother than butter vocals over a mesmeric backdrop. Other standouts include Archr’s bouncy ‘Da Daa’ and the soothing slapper ‘Mercy’ from AN TY. The project also features Kilamanzego, MANTRABLU, Boy JUGO, harlyyn & náttúra.

We want to see Future Beats become the sound of 2020 and compilations like Hayashi are just what we need to help make it happen. Stream below and grab the free download.
