‘Bad Name’ Proves That Gang Starr Are Truly Timeless

The lyrics come from the hook of Gang Starr’s latest release ‘Bad Name’. Despite the fact that the verse was recorded nearly a decade ago at least (prior to Guru’s passing), they could not ring more true in today’s hip-hop climate. The lyrics throughout serve as a reminder to respect the artform while also demonstrating Guru’s timeless appeal. Premiere’s production is perfect as always, leveraging ghostly vocal bends, funky horns and clever cuts. This is golden era hip-hop in its truest form.

Along with the release comes news that Gang Starr’s new album One Of The Best Yet will be out November 1st. Given the impressiveness of ‘Bad Name’ and ‘Family and Loyalty‘ it’s shaping up to be something special.

Gang Starr Return With ‘Family and Loyalty’ Featuring J. Cole

“Diamonds are forever like family and loyalty/ Or real rap songs like ’C.R.E.A.M.’ or ‘My Melody’/ Diamonds are forever like my infinite thought/ Like respect in the hood that can’t be bought,” Guru raps on the hook of Gang Starr’s new single ‘Family and Loyalty’. Hearing his voice on a new record is exhilarating and poignant. There’s a magical nostalgia and familiarity contrasted with the reminder of the loss of legend too soon. While some post-humous releases can be gimmicky or tasteless, ‘Family and Loyalty’ is the opposite. With a classic DJ Premier beat and his signature cuts, the track is Gang Starr in its purest form. Adding in a guest verse which Cole promises to be his last, makes the track even more powerful. This is nothing short of a gem. If you’ve been missing Gang Starr and the golden era hip hop sound, this one is for you.

Gang Starr, comprised of DJ Premier and Guru (in case you didn’t already know – and why the hell didn’t you know?), dropped a 32 track compilation album including three new originals. “Discipline” is one of the three.
