A man that has thoroughly established a propensity for remixes, Los Angeles-based Hex Cougar has gone toe-to-toe with iconic tunes from the likes of Kaskade, deadmau5, and Dog Blood, re-envisioning the nostalgic symmetry with an added ‘Hextra’ flavor that fans have grown to love. One of his most unprecedented reworkings to date is a cover of Gesaffelstein’s ‘Hellifornia,’ in which Hex revisits the timeless dark house classic with a bouncy west coast flair and riveting trap complexity.

Gesaffelstein Returns With His Versatile EP ‘Novo Sonic System’

Straight out of France, Gesaffelstein has become one of the most influential producers of this century. Starting in the late 2000s, the Prince of Darkness began compiling a massive discography mainly combining dark industrial sounds with elements of techno. In 2013, the Frenchman helped co-produce Kanye West’s Yeezus alongside other legendary producers like Daft Punk, Brodinski, and Mike Dean. After a brief hibernation starting in 2013, the mastermind awoke with his album Hyperion earlier this year. Following up on this massive project, Novo Sonic System is a testament to what Gesaffelstein is and will always be: experimental.

To start off, ‘Orck’ is a pleasing blend of post-punk and drum and bass. Beginning with a slow guitar riff that slowly picks up tempo, the track builds upon its punk influences with the addition of vocal chants and a hard-hitting persuasion pattern that carries the energy throughout. Next up is ‘Dance X,’ which brings us back to a more familiar side of Gesaffelstein with an eclectic downtempo techno track. Moving on, the third track ‘Ignio’ once again draws influence from drum and bass, while risers in the back of the mix carry the energy of the track. Following up with ‘Doom’, this track utilizes a dark theme with a minor guitar rift and booming low ends that truly strike terror in the listener. Next up, the title track of the EP showcases a melody that can’t seem to stay in one place, while still maintaining a constant flow throughout. Finishing off the project, ‘Metalotronics’ shines the spotlight on a looping guitar melody which is accompanied by crashing symbols and fast-paced drums. Check out this masterpiece below!
