DMV native GoldLink has been one of the most consistently impressive rappers of the past five years. From early SoundCloud favourites like ‘Wassup,’ ‘Dance On Me’ and ‘Aquafina,’ to major hits like ‘Crew,’ GoldLink has proven his skills for time. Today GoldLink returns with what’s destined to be his biggest release to date in Diaspora. The 14 track album features all of the sides of the artist we’ve come to love. Looking for something heavy packing bars? See ‘Maniac,’ ‘Rumble,’ and the Push T assisted ‘Coke White/Moscow.’ In the market for a summer bop? ‘Joke Ting,’ ‘U Say (ft. Goldink & Peewee Longway Flex On ‘Got Muscle’

Got muscle? That’s the big question on Goldlink’s mind as he steps into 2019 with his newest track ‘Got Muscle’ (featuring Peewee Longway & Wave IQ). Goldlink has been a consistently interesting rapper throughout his career. From a trio of Kaytranada produced beats featuring groovy house and funk stylings, to his jersey-club esque single ‘Dance on Me,’ Goldlink has consistently pushed the envelope in terms of his sound and content. After being relatively quiet since his Grammy-nominated single ‘Crew’ Goldlink returns to the limelight with his first track of the year.

Now I’ll come out of the gate saying that while ‘Got Muscle’ is not quite as adventurous as some of his previous content, sometimes a rapper’s gotta flex on people and that’s exactly what’s going on in this track. Goldlink comes out swinging on his opening verse, rapping over a contemplative piano beat courtesy of WaveIQ; “yeah, how many niggas from the block/just a real nigga till they get popped/get knocked til that nigga turn to God, they’re a cop/and I never gave a fuck about an opp.” This is a good old-fashioned hood-ballad at its finest. This is Goldlink daring anyone and everyone to come and try him, he’ll rise to the occasion. He’s got muscle, do you?

To help him out in his quest to flex on the haters Goldlink has tapped the ever-steady Peewee Longway for a guest feature. After rising to prominence for his mixtape Blue M&M, his collaboration with Young Thug ‘Loaded’ and last year’s club smash ‘Rerocc,’ Longway has quietly but consistently shined as a lyricist and rapper with deadly flows and raw verses. Longway continues his streak on ‘Muscle’ dropping bars colder than Toronto’s weather like “You got muscle? Flex. Steppin on a little bitch/water drippin off my rolex” managing to both call people out, stomp an opp and show off his wealth in the space of four bars.

Diplo Switches The Style Up With California EP

At this point in his career, Diplo can really do whatever the fuck he wants. He’s won. But what would be a genius without new innovations? With the release of his new EP, California, Diplo reinforces that genius by showing that electronic music isn’t all about the big drops and genre-bending new wave music, sometimes all a song needs is good, clean production.

Diplo is one of the very few producers who can jump from genre to genre and actually find a home in that sound. Too frequently producers try out a new sound and it just falls flat, either clunky and uncomfortable or unoriginal to the point that it is boring. Diplo is able to rise above that as showcased on California. The predominantly hip-hop and rap-influenced EP is full of big names such as Desiigner, Lil Yachty, and Santigold, each song incorporating Diplo’s unique ability to adapt to each artist. ‘Worry No More’ captures both Santigold and Lil Yachty’s carefree vibes, creating a song that calls for a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway with the top down. Desiigner, backed by Diplo’s tropical beats, softly sings about having some dark thoughts on ‘Suicidal.’ It’s like the come down at a party, still having fun but starting to wonder when it got to be 4 am.

While each song on the EP is a standout, the dramatic ‘Look Back’ with DRAM is the star. Having been released last month, it’s not a surprise but it still resonates. DRAM’s voice soars with a heavy, melodic beat that gives a sense of vulnerability that transforms into invincibility. Tinged with gospel, RnB, and indie rock influences, perfectly operating in tandem as the song swells to DRAM’s final cry of “You know I haven’t looked back” only to quickly filter out, like a wind-up toy finally coming to a stop. Diplo has had a lot of hits, but ‘Look Down’ will go down as one of Diplo’s greatest.

California displays Diplo at his finest, forcing him to completely step into hip-hop rather than sitting on the outskirts. He creates a different sound and vibe for every track, making it almost impossible to choose just one favorite. The only thing that is 100% certain, with the last bits of Diplo’s latest mega-hit ‘Get it Right’ in our headphones: Diplo still remains a king.

Shred on Over to BC for Snowbombing 2018!

Festival season doesn’t usually come into full swing until the hot summer days are upon us. However, one festival, Snowbombing Canada, is looking to help change such a way of thinking, and kick the winter wonderland woes to the curb in the coolest way possible (no pun intended).

Coors Light presents its 2nd annual Snowbombing – an event which went off on such a good note this year that they’re bringing the hype back to Sun Peaks Resort, BC! Get ready for an extended weekend getaway of slippin’ down the slopes while taking in some of the biggest names in the scene today. It’s going to feature headliners such as Odesza, Cardi B, Borgore, and Goldlink, on top of a gnarly roster of all-star DJs and performers, for the ultimate party to see out the last remaining throes of winter.

Festival aspect aside, there’s also 4,270 acres of open piste for skiers and boarders of all types – whether you’ve never once gone down a hill in your life, or know the slopes like the back of your hand, there’s plenty of space for one to hone their skills, or simply have fun in the snow.

Accommodations vary from 4-star spa luxury hotels complete with jacuzzis, chalets, and apartments in the heart of central Sun Peaks, to pocket-friendly, self-catered apartments within the surrounding area. It’s been just over a year since Lido unveiled his incredible debut album Everything. Today he unveiled the best surprise yet by releasing an alternate version of ‘Only One’ with Goldlink. Where Jaden’s feature felt hazy and abstract, Goldink’s is sharp and clear cut. Lido Delivers Another Incredible Goldlink Remix With ‘Crew’

Anytime the words Lido and remix are beside each other you know you’re in for a treat. His ability to deliver an inventive new take on any song is second to none. Proving this once again is Lido’s remix of Goldlink‘s ‘Crew.’ From the jump it’ll make your ears perk up as it opens with smooth keys and vocals from Lido himself. Hearing him take on the chorus is an unexpected but very pleasant surprise. As Goldink comes in, the keys embody a country cool vibe that evolves into a future bass backing. Keeping things interesting, Lido slows it down for an R&B break before taking things to a new level. Shy Glizzy’s verse is paired with a pounding bass-heavy beat that switches up the whole vibe. ‘Crew’ is yet another example of Lido’s immense talent that also showcases how much of an anthem the original is. DMV native Goldlink has been a favourite of ours for a minute. Landing on our 8 Rappers You Should Be Listening To list back in 2015, Goldlink has continued to impress and evolve with each release. Proving this once more comes his latest album At What Cost. The 14 track project sees Goldlink skating over a myriad of beats and vibes. Early standouts include the Kaytranada assisted ‘Meditation,’ the Wale featured ‘Summatime’ and the booming, Swindail produced ‘Kokamoe Freestyle’. Oh and we can’t forget the divine anthem ‘Pray Everyday (Survivors Guilt)’. The whole album goes though, so be sure to stream it from front to back.

Mick Jenkins & GoldLink Connect For ‘Pressed for time (Crossed my mind)’

Mick Jenkins has just released his freshest single ‘Pressed for time (Crossed my mind)’ featuring GoldLink.

Jenkins is a Hip Hop artist out of Chicago, IL who is part of a culture called Free Nation which promotes “creative thought without accepting the narrow view imposed by the powers that be.” With his most recent singles sassy, and positive lyrics that ooze with flirtation it is easy to see how Jenkins stands out in the contemporary Hip Hop scene.

‘Pressed for time’ has over 180,000 plays on SoundCloud and is creating quite a stir. Its hard not to like with a voice like velvet, and swift flow. Jenkins’s words are sassy but sensual as he describes attraction as “enthralling” and “entranced”. With declarations like, “I know what I want” this sweet talk is something I could cuddle up to. Goldlink’s featured verse is crafted with an energetic flow, that’s as plucky as the lyrics that flare out.

This track’s chic beat sets a seductive tone for each artist’s verses. The break down in the last quarter allows the listener to relish the lingering flavors of the song. If there is a song you want to both be seduced to and boogey a bit, this is it.

Lose Yourself in Isaiah Rashad x GoldLink’s ‘Untitled’

It seems like all of the most talented modern rappers focus on speed, precision, and power in their verses. There’s certainly something to be said for a rapper who can spit lightning-fast lines and pump listeners up, but a song can be powerful without hyping the crowd up. With ‘Untitled,’ Isaiah Rashad and GoldLink take control with a slow, grinding beat that hypnotizes listeners rather than smacking them in the face. The beat is reminiscent of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Spiteful Chant,’ but Rashad and GoldLink’s lyrical styles are completely different from Kendrick. While Kendrick’s vocals are full of emotion and passion, Rashad and GoldLink both treat their vocals more like an instrumental track. They control their voices and their flows to add an extra layer of musicality, focusing on their technique and lyrical structure rather than trying to send a clear message. This is especially true of GoldLink, who you might recognize from our list of 8 Rappers You Should Be Listening To. GoldLink’s verse fits so perfectly with the beat that his rhymes just become part of the music.

While Isaiah Rashad’s verse is just as smooth as GoldLink’s, his lyrics have a little more soul. This might be expected from the man who gave us The Sun’s Tirade just last month. Rashad gets introspective with lines like:

Yeah I remember that, yeah I remember that
Mama why ya got me rockin’ Sketchers
I’m a product of the product
and the product bought a Lexus.

This is THE track to zone out to right now. The slow, grinding beat (about 70 bpm) combines with a soulful violin track and Rashad and GoldLink’s silky smooth lyrics to create a song that just washes over you like the tide on a calm beach.
