Good Times Ahead, formerly known as GTA, are no strangers to innovation. The duo out of Miami have been at the forefront of electronic music over the past decade. Being one of the original projects that truly established trap on the scene and as a genre, Good Times Ahead have continued to show us their creativity by branching out and giving us masterful takes on other genres. On ‘Waffle House,’ the dynamic duo team up with fellow trap legend, Flosstradamus, to give us their take on house.

At the start of ‘Waffle House’ we are given the foundation of a robust house beat filled with rattling kicks and piercing open hi-hats. As we approach the thirty second mark, many different ingredients find their way into the track from the vocal sample giving us the title of the track to meticulously placed metronome ticks used to fill the spaces between the skillfully designed sub that carries the melody. This track is a testament to artists who refuse to be contained by the boundaries of genres. Add another A-List collaboration to you playlist and check this one out below!

Back in 2013 GTA & Diplo collided for the Missy Elliot sampling slapper ‘Boy Oh Boy.’ The track lived on to become an anthem that could still slay sets to this day. Despite the years past, their chemistry hasn’t subsided as they team up for a fresh banger entitled ‘Milky Cabrera.’ The absurd smash is a certified home run. The track kicks off with a vocal sample of Diplo talking in the studio. The beat is stripped away as he beat boxes before an absurd hook rolls in and things begin to build. When the drop hits it’s a wild time with pitched vocals, pounding kicks and some crazy chops. The chest pounding energy is assured to have you shuffling like a maniac. In typical GTA fashion they strip things down for another break before freaking things even further to close it out. ‘Milky Cabrera’ is ridiculously fun and stupid catchy with top-tier production to back it. Stream below.

If you’ve been paying attention to festival sets since 2017, there’s a chance you’ve heard their long-awaited track, ‘FK IT’ before. After many low-quality rips, ‘FK IT’ has finally found a home under Mad Decent, just in time for festival season.

‘FK IT’ brings heavy trap vibes right from the start, with a bouncy lead and catchy vocals, GTA elevates ‘FK IT’ to astronomical proportions with thick, pounding 808’s, rising leads and blaring brass trumpets. The second drop feels so much more 2019, as GTA brings a more experimental side to the track with a wonky, high pitched lead that glides over the trap influenced drums. Needless to say, you’ll probably be hearing ‘FK IT’ in many festival sets this year.

They sprinkle elements of trap, rap, R&B, moombahton, future bass and more into their production pot and always cook up that heat. Seeing them come together just feels right especially with Stush on the vocals. Having each worked with Stush previously, the chemistry is killer. ‘Buyaka’ is just as rough and energetic as the title suggests. Stush brings an intoxicating dance hall energy that’s backed with snappy snares and snarling bass. As the first drop hits, her chest pounding “Buyaka, Buyaka” chant will ignite your spirit. The beat breaks down and slows up just so that it can come back that much more sinister. The midpoint is pure madness; a violent trap war. Stush swags herself back in, commanding your ears once again before you’re laid out with a tempo-switching finale that reminds us what makes GTA and Falcons so special. Stream ‘Buyaka’ below.

What is the greatest time period for music? It’s a question sure to excite and engage conversation at a party, with friends or online. It allows for us to see things from a different perspective and learn about individuals in an interesting way. Some might tell you it was the 60’s with the birth of legends like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Others may say it was the early days of the 80’s when house was just starting to take shape, still living underground in warehouses. Those of a younger generation might point to rap’s golden era in the 90’s when all the Bigs (Biggie, Big L, Big Pun) where killing mics, Pac was alive and well and it was all about the bars. And although you may want to agree with one or more of the thoughts, they’re all wrong. The greatest time period for music is right now. We’re living it. From the shear quantity of great music, to the incredible collaborations that breaking down genres barriers, to the groundbreaking number of tours and festivals and the opportunities available for artists. Feeling skeptical? Take a read below and tell me that you disagree.

There’s Never Been This Much Good Music This Often

Never in history has there been this much good music coming out this often. When we started FUXWITHIT we worried if we’d be able to find enough music to keep the site consistently updated. Over the years it’s become harder and harder to keep up. We post daily and put together a weekly feature called FUXWITHITFRIDAYS that highlights the best songs of the week. We regularly have 15-25 songs each week in this feature. That means there is, on average, 20 great songs a week that are released. That’s over 1,000 songs a year and these are just SoundCloud tracks, this doesn’t account for the vast array of albums and EPs released exclusively on larger streaming platforms. Sure there’s also way more crap out there but that’s why you have outlets like us sifting through the shit to bring you the gems. Not only is the music being created at a crazy pace but it’s also so easily consumed. With the platforms like SoundCloud, Spotify and YouTube along with social networks like Facebook and Twitter, artists can make a song and put it out to their fans within minutes. Also with the decline in record sales since the dawn of Napster, music is becoming more and more free, whether it’s free to stream or the immensely popular free downloads. Artists are giving away their music in order to build strong fan bases which results in a win win for both parties. Long gone are the days when your bank account balance defined what music you’d be able to listen too. I remember having to choose between two CDs and waiting a month to be able to come and buy the one I couldn’t afford. Now all you have to do is open your laptop and tap a few keys to hear anything you can imagine.

The idea of one artist working with that vast of an array of talent would seem baffling even just ten years ago.

Collaboration Is At Its Peak

One of the bright spots in today’s music scene is the incredible collaboration which is occurring between artists. With the connectivity of the internet, artists are linking in ways like never before. Easily the biggest example of this is Skrillex. In the past few years, the producer has worked with everyone from The Doors to Justin Bieber, Chance The Rapper, Korn, Rick Ross, Diplo, RL Grime, Mr. Oizo, Big Grams and more. The idea of one artist (especially one who made a name for himself making dubstep) working with that vast of an array of talent would seem baffling even just ten years ago. Although Skrillex may be the most striking example, unorthodox collaborations are becoming the norm, from Flume’s album credits boasting Vic Mensa and Vince Staples along with Tove Lo, AlunaGeorge and Beck, to Chance The Rapper recruiting Brasstracks and Lido for Colouring Book, to the Weekend working with Cashmere Cat and Daft Punk. When Jay-Z collided with Linkin Park in 2004 it seemed crazy, now collaborations across genres and artists are common place. It’s not only interesting but also beneficial. Vastly different musicians coming together has allowed for myriad of new sounds to be birthed and genre barriers to be destroyed.

Death Of Genres; More Creativity

Genres can be a good thing. They help to categorize and understand music in a simple way. But they can also be very limiting. For years artists were told to stay in their lane. If you were a rapper you rapped. If you were a singer you sang. Don’t colour too far outside the lines they said. This approach stifled creativity and limited what could be. Thankfully the walls have come down with artists having little regard for genre based constructs. Drake’s blend of sing-along vocals interspersed with raps was a huge risk when he released So Far Gone in 2009. Now it’s become a standard in rap and birthed a whole wave of artists following this blueprint. Another huge convergence is the coming together of hip hop and electronic music. Artists like Pusha T and Vince Staples are hopping on tracks that span from trap, to house and techno. Sometimes all within the same song. GTA’s Good Times Ahead album embodied their famous “Death To Genres” mentality by featuring elements of future bass, hip hop, RnB, trap, twerk and whatever the hell ‘Little Bit Of This’ is. Lido’s Everything finds itself in a similar place, defying categorization due to it’s immensely varying and forward-thinking nature. As the significance of genres deteriorates it allows for artists to truly create music without any boundaries, resulting in the truest form of expression.

It’s Never Been Easier To See Your Favourite Artists

With the decline of music sales, artists were forced to find new ways to make money off their art. The most significant source is touring. Artists spend a large portion of their year hitting cities for headlining tours and playing festivals. I live in Toronto and like any major market it is absolutely insane the number of shows that happen each week. It’s not uncommon to have 3 impressive shows happening within a few days. In addition to regular tours, festivals have seen a massive boom. As a music lover there’s nothing better than having the ability to see a dozen or more of your favourite artists in the span of a weekend. Since festivals are big money, more and more tend to pop up each year and everyone is trying to out-due the other with bigger production, better line-ups and anything else they can do to sell tickets. This holds well for us fans as we reap the benefits of that competition. You used to have to drive or fly hours to go to a decent music festival, now they’re being held in every major city.

“For the first time, maybe ever, you can control your own destiny as an artist. There’s no gate keepers holding the doors anymore.” – HXV

Independence for Musicians

In addition to everything listed above there’s also never been a better time in music for artists. When we spoke to Atlanta producer HXV he told us, “For the first time, maybe ever, you can control your own destiny as an artist. There’s no gate keepers holding the doors anymore.” To expand on this, so many barriers have been brought down by the internet. The major label system is archaic and dying, making way for independent artists to control their own destiny. With the ability to connect to fans directly they don’t need label backing. They can retain full creative control while building a strong fan base on their own or with a small and nimble team that actually has their interests in mind. The days of labels holding artists hostage or forcing them to put out bullshit work to satisfy their mainstream desires (see Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers) are dead. This is great for artists but also for fans. We’re getting music that is their truest work and often as mentioned before, for free! Sure making it independently isn’t easy and having a label backing can help but the fact is the opportunity is there like never before. Just look at what Chance The Rapper has been able to achieve.

The world may be in a weird place right now but there’s never been a better time for music. So if you’re a music lover revel in it, embrace it. Remind yourself how lucky you are to be living through a time that’s so damn special. This trend is likely to continue so be happy we have something to look forward to.
‘Feel It’ has a little bit of everything. Cute vocals with clear lyrics, ethereal breathiness, and aggressive percussion. What is really impressive is how the edges of each compartment blend together to create a flow that is rare to stumble upon. The quirky creativity of this producer comes through in his surprising sound selection. His ability to bring shattering glass clips and deep drum lines together makes for an easy listen that will not get repetitive. This is a track to dance to with its upbeat attitude and multifarious grooves. The soft and muddled bass is flicked over and over with snapping snares and really sets the tone for some stellar pop-and-locking, maybe even a moon-walk here or there. Branchez’s remix brings bass intensity to a song that is semi-sweet and the final product is a track you really can feel.

As 2016 draws to a close you know we had to end the year by highlighting the best songs of 2016. As you’ve come to expect, this year’s list contains a broad array of musical styles and genres. We’ve got everything from ignorant turn-up bangers to though-provoking, socially conscious hip hop and everything in between. The countdown continues today with 40-31 and will continue throughout the week, ending on Friday. Check out our selects below and be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

40. Marshmello – Alone

Marshmello is the mystery man of 2016. His identity remains a mystery, even after the whole Tiesto prank, but what isn’t unclear is how much fun he must be having with us. Music fans were delighted and found Marhsmello’s single “Alone” a perfect follow up from his remixes of Jack Ü and Zedd which gave him his first international attention. Many suspect Marshmello is actually Dj Chris Comstock, but with fresh beats and killer mixes who really cares what’s under that big, blank, mello stare?

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/264023874″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

39. NGHTMRE – Burn Out

NGHTMRE’s dark wizardry soaks through this spacey track. The key board synthetics and snappy snares merge into one wave. Cresting with a mane of white foam the melody rushes to the drop. At the shore of NGHTMRE’s ‘Burn Out’ the percussion’s currents meet and there is another frothy hit. NGHTMRE has been cruising through the masses being it down at each of his touring stops. You might have seen him at Safe in Sound 2016, or you might still have a change during his current trek across the US and Australia which will in end in February. ‘Burn Out” is a great example of his attention to detail in his music, unique choice of sound, and his ability to create a disturbingly good beat.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/245105721″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

38. 21 Savage – X (Ft. Future)

21 Savage had a great 2016. The Atlanta rapper found success with his collaborative album Savage Mode featuring Metro Boomin and secured himself a spot on the XXL Freshman list. Linking up with the monster that is Future, 21 Savage goes in on his ex-girlfriends and openly stunts on them all. Lines like “hit her with no condom, had to make her eat a Plan B” live up to the rappers name and though they’re borderline cringe worthy they are also a part of the reason so many people fuck with him. 21 coming in at number 38.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/273828810″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

37. D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty – Broccoli

“Hey lil’ mama, would you like to be my sunshine, n*gga tough my gang we gon’ turn this shit to Columbine” – lyrics heard around the world. D.R.A.M. hit big last year with his joint ‘Cha Cha’ and this year he continued to stay on top with his Lil Yachty collaboration. Lil Boat has been able to amass a loyal following for his take on the Migos flow and somewhat clever but mostly funny bars. ‘Broccoli’ was a big summer hit and rang out anytime it played at a club and hearing the Big Baby yell out how beyond the fuck shit he is easily became one of the biggest chants of the year.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/257659076″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

36. Young M.A. – Ooouuu

Young M.A. did her thing this year. Over an infectious beat M.A. spit her New York flow, rapping “Yo Eli why they testing me, like I don’t always keep the hammer next to me”. These two bars lead into the biggest ‘Ooouuu’ moment where any girl named Stephanie (who heard the song) probably hated. Credited with giving rise to the return of NY rap (alongside some others), Young M.A. continues to heat the streets up with freestyles and new joints but its safe to say ‘Ooouuu’ was her best to date.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/262375023″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

35. GTA x Vince Staples – Little Bit Of This

GTA’s Death To Genres mantra has helped to serve as the gospel for breaking down barriers in music. Their debut album embodied this to fullest extent with one track taking it to the next level. Connecting with Mr. Feature (Vince Staples) they cooked up the insane ‘Little Bit Of This’. The track blends weird nature samples, squealing tires, deep bass and a trippy as fuck loops, for a sound that is unlike anything else. And that’s without even mentioning the stellar bars from Vince Staples. Over this mind-bending beat, Vince does what he does best, be himself. From street tales, to smirk inducing bars this is Vince Staples at his finest.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/283047258″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

34. Major Lazer – Cold Water

Major Lazer is still producing hits and partnering with songbirds from every continent and genre in music. ‘Cold Water’ was 2016’s concoction of pure pop-melodies and bass music’s sassy electric modernity. With over 99 million views on the music video for ‘Cold Water’ on their official YouTube channel, Major Lazer’s staying ability is unquestionable. Both vocalists on this track, Justin Bieber and MO, release the lyrics echoing the same island feel that the beat carries, bringing it in with everything but steel drums in true MJ fashion. This catchy jam was Major Lazer’s hit of this year, and the world can look forward to more of their music and performances in 2017. They have dates booked in Jamaica, France, Germany, Mexico- everywhere.

33. Kid Cudi – Surfin’

What happens when Kid Cudi and Pharrell link up? You get a feel good song that motivates you to “do your thing”. ‘Surfin’ encourages everyone to ride their own waves rather than others. Skateboard P brings some of his ‘Happy’ magic to the track by giving it that extra oomph that makes the track stand out against other pop tunes. With Kid Cudi battling his depression, this song serves as a reminder that not only is he a dope artist but he’s realized that he needs to and can be great on his own.

32. Dj Sliink – Higher

Ever wondered what would happen if the Jersey Club King connected with the hype man of the century? Thankfully this year we got to find when DJ Sliink connected with the legendary Fatman Scoop. ‘Higher’ is a record of epic proportions. It’s a perfect blend of Sliink’s signature trap meets club sound. The war ready brass and Fatman Scoop’s intensity collide for the “I Don’t Give A Fuck” anthem of the year. Whether you’re at the club, at work, at school or online, it’s difficult to listen to this without throwing your middle finger up and screaming “I don’t give a fuck.” The video only furthered the impact of this record, taking fans to Jersey and reminding them Jersey still got this.

31. TroyBoi – Mantra

TroyBoi’s ability to blend world music with his bass heavy trap leanings has made him one of the most highly regarded producers out. On ‘Mantra’ TroyBoi takes this talent to another level. Weaving crystal bowl reverberations and entrancing exotic vocals with snapping drums and chest-pounding bass, TroyBoi takes you to another dimension. This is dancing naked under a blood moon while achieving spiritual enlightenment. The track also served as the namesake and theme song for his debut, all original world tour. A massive milestone in his continually building career.

GTA‘s disregard for genres has been well documented, from their all-over-the-place-but-still-tied-together performances, to their productions and their classic mix series Death To Genres. With their major label debut Good Times Ahead, fans were left wondering if their genre mashing days would be washed away for a poppy, radio-friendly sound. Thankfully the duo stayed true to themselves, delivering a 10 track album that blends R&B, Rap, Future Bass, Pop, House, Trap and just about any other genre you can think of. It does this, often times on the same tracks (see ‘Feel It,’ & ‘All Caught Up’). What further serves to impress is the different sides of the sound spectrum that somehow fit together. The project opens ‘True Romance,’ a love infused ballad that’ll take you back to slow dancing with your first crush. It’s intoxicating but it will leave wondering if GTA’s gone soft (these are the guys who made ‘Break Your Neck’ after all). ‘Little Bit Of This’ kills that thought in its tracks. Nature sounds spill into a bass heavy, brain-bending beat that’s championed by Vince Staples’ raw as fuck bars. ‘Feel It and ‘Heartbeat’ fall somewhere in between. The latter starts as an emotional, downtempo tune that drops of a cliff into some cavernous bass. A few cuts later the Iamsu assisted ‘Contract’ mixes Bay area bounce with some Middle-Eastern flavour for a surefire standout. On Good Times Ahead, you’re never quite sure where it’s going, but it’s always a great ride.
