‘Don’t’ is a soulful work of art that pulls at your heartstrings while moving your feet. Stirring synths and hauntingly beautiful vocal bends set the stage. The looped and twisted vocal is a mixture of soulful and yearning that will leave you flipping through memories of that special someone like photographs in an old album. The emotional pull is deep but it doesn’t take away from the groove as playful drums inject and undeniable danceablity. Lush atmospherics, immersive low end, and fluttering leads add to the allure. ‘Don’t’ is a tale of two parts as the first remains slightly more subdued. Midway through bouncy synths give way to a stripped echoed vocal that erupts into a bass-driven climax that gives fans what they’ve come to expect from Haan808.

 I’ve been making UKG/Garage/House for as long as I’ve been making hip hop/EDM that I’m mainly known for. Just came naturally, what mainly drew me to the genre was simply living in New Zealand. NZ has a huge UK influence of music specially DnB. My goal was just to make something that I enjoy and feel happy first before anyone else. I didn’t focus much on anything else but enjoying the experience of making it. – Haan808

‘I Ain’t Playin’ is a certified bop that’s at home motivating you through a tough break-up or tearing up the dancefloor. After watching Skrillex, Four Tet & Fred again.. play they are set at Coachella live stream, all the songs had crazy switch ups and all the songs had such a groove to me. It also looked like they were just having a jam, nothing planned—big inspo for this song. I approached the song the same way. First and foremost tell us about the mix you put together. What can we expect from each of you?

Capshun: I dropped a lot of new tunes and some gas that I have been making. Wanted to show y’all what I was getting ready to drop next.

Haan808: Some new music I have been making, some unreleased stuff from friends, and a bloody good time.

How did you first connect? What made you want to work together?

Capshun: It was online. I think we connected through Boombox. I was kind of tapping in after I caught his set there and a few months later I think we tapped in on Insta. We shared some music for a while before we started working on tunes together but eventually shared enough tunes with each other and finally got one to work on together.

Haan808: At first I believe we both performed on Boombox Cartell’s Cinco Mode live stream, during the world being in lockdown from Covid. That’s how I saw Capshun for the first time, and I loved his set, then a few months later we connected via Instagram just saying wassup and exchanging music together. We actually made a few tracks before this release we did with Bitbird

Can we expect more collaborations in the future?

Capshun: Oh absolutely. Once we get another track that we both love I’m sure we’ll get some more collabs out.

Haan808: Hella yeah!, I’m always down to collab with people I connect with. I don’t collab a lot just mainly because of how I write music, so when I do it’s with people I can connect with and appreciate their music.

You’re both known for producing across genres. What sound currently has your ear as a listener and as a producer?

Capshun: I’m kind of all over the place. I think right now I am listening to more new music than I have in a while. SoundCloud underground is going crazy. I’m definitely still focusing on trap and bass stuff right now. Also I have a random new love for techno.

Haan808: A lot of UK/London music for me. I been making a lot of UKG, house with some darker tones to it, and being from New Zealand the home of Drum and Bass course making DnB.

We’re almost halfway through 2023, what’s been your biggest highlight of 2023 so far?

Capshun: Biggest highlight has to be getting booked for Deadbeats in New York. That show is about to be insane. The lineup is extremely cracked and the venue is one of the dopest in New York. So I am about to turn up there for sure. Also being a part of Rossy’s tour this year is an easy second though. It was so dope that she was willing to let me support her and be on the lineup with her.

Haan808: Honestly for me, lifestyle choice for my health. Since I changed my diet, healthier choices, exercising more, I have been able to be more creative without it being a chore. My work outside of music working for ‘ASCOLOUR’ a wholesale clothing company, have been focusing on that also. Just a bunch of stuff….and more music obviously

What do you each have planned in terms of upcoming releases?

Capshun: So far I have a couple more releases lined up. One with Slow Roast (Craze’s label) and one with Good Society which is one that I am extremely excited for. After that I’ll be laser-focused in on finishing up another EP and self-releasing that this year starting in July.

Haan808: Nothing able to mention atm but definitely more releases on dope labels such Bitbird, Monta Records, etc.

Haan, if capshun was in New Zealand for one day. Where are you guys headed? What is a must-see?

Haan808: Firstly, it depends where we are. If we are in the south-island like in Queenstown it’s a whole nother world, just imagine the greenery and landscape of Lord Of The Rings but in real life. However, if we were in my hometown of Auckland, I’d take him to the sky tower, get some food from our seafood market if you’re down on seafood like that. Some dope beaches in New Zealand so probably the beach, a whole lotta tings we’d do. Depends on if Capshun is wanting a wholesome day… or something more night lifey if you get me lol…

capshun, Haan808 just landed in Texas and is in need of a proper Texas meal. Where are you headed to eat?

Capshun: Oh too easy. We are definitely hitting Ari Korean BBQ in Carrolton We are definitely dropping into downtown and hitting deep ellum. Vidorra is high on my list for a great Mexican style dinner. And probably gonna stop for lunch over at Legacy Food Hall in Plano where I live because there are so many options and it’s all gas. Some of my favorite tacos are there.

What’s the last track that made you stop what you were doing to just put all your focus into listening?

Haan808: The track capshun made with Jon Casey, ‘Fever Dream.’ That was nuts!

Capshun: ‘RTH’ by Twerl & Oddly Godly on Sable Valley is one of the ones that really messed me up. Also thanks Haan <3

What’s one thing you’ve been dying to know about each other?

Capshun: What’s the one thing that if you were trapped in a studio with a lifetime supply of food that you could not go without?

How’s New Zealand been treating you?

NZ has been treating me great! It’s been good for me to have some time to reinvent myself and focus on the things that are important to me.

It’s always great to see another artist from NZ grow and thrive overseas putting us on their back. Love to everyone hustling here in NZ and making waves in the music industry.

The scene out there seems very tight-knit. For those outside of NZ can you tell us what it’s like? Is everyone pretty friendly and supportive?

Yeah definitely, everyone knows each other or knows of each other. In other genres of music also. A lot of us artists in NZ are homies, me & a very good friend of mine Montell2099 all have a lot of homies who do pop music, rap and are in bands etc. It’s great that we can learn a lot from each other and we respect each other’s hustle and grind. It’s always great to see another artist from NZ grow and thrive overseas putting us on their back. Love to everyone hustling here in NZ and making waves in the music industry.

What was your start point into music as a creator?

I was about 5 years old when I first picked up the guitar and not long after that I started playing piano. At about 11 or 12 years old that’s when I started to make beats- my brother Pax showed me a video of 9th wonder and Phonte making music in the studio and that sparked a huge interest in beat making after that.

In a previous interview you mentioned you originally hated hip-hop. What converted you into a fan?

Lol my bad! Yeah that’s changed for sure. At the time I was just really into other genres like heavy metal, metal punk etc. My brother was/still is a huge hip hop head so I’ve grown to really appreciate it.

Your set from Boombox Cartel’s Cinco Mode livestream was pretty epic. Where was it shot and how did it come together?

Thank you, yeah it was awesome. S/O Boombox for the support! It was easy shooting to be honest. My flatmate and good friend Jared Tinetti shot it for me, who has been working alongside artists like QUIX, Montell, Alison Wonderland, and tons of others. We shot it at a waterfall behind my university campus and it came out great!

Having to produce the same edm trap hip-hop is great and I still love it but it’s been a nice breath of fresh air to release some others genres and show people I can do more than just bass heavy and hip-hop stuff.

You’ve been experimenting with some new genres including house & D&B. What’s prompted the switch up? Where are you heading next?

I’ve been making different genres for the longest time tbh, I guess recently I’ve been wanting to showcase what I’m about and what I can do to the people who listen to me and stuff. And also wanting to be more free of creative control also. Having to produce the same edm trap hip-hop is great and I still love it but it’s been a nice breath of fresh air to release some others genres and show people I can do more than just bass heavy and hip-hop stuff.

How did you and Montell2099 first link up? Any plans for future collaborations together?

Me and Monts have known each other for a while now. Over 7/8 years, I think. We liked each other’s music then eventually met up in person through a mutual friend. These days we don’t really discuss music together tbh, he’s busy taking over the world right now and I’m happy for him. We haven’t got any collabs planned right now but you never know.

Outside of music are you still doing physical art? Have you created any pieces as of late?

Yup always making art still, because like I said before I’m still at uni and so for projects I gotta create and make prototypes.

What’s the biggest takeaway from your product design degree?

I haven’t really thought about that before. I guess one of the biggest things I’m taking from this degree is… My degree has really taught me how to create art that… I’m not sure really, I haven’t thought about it to deeply. I guess taking away the overview of design and art. Also in how to create something that triggers thought-provoking matters and topics. Understanding the form and process of creating good composition and typography. Just still learning all ways to be honest.

What are you sitting on in terms of music right now?

I have tons of plans for upcoming music atm, some releases with labels and collabs that I cannot wait to announce in due time. At the moment I’m trying to slowly reinvent myself and show people how diverse I can be with the music I put out.
