The Dark Skies & Holy Grail mixtape holds a lot of character and energy. Every piece has something fresh and new to become addicted to. His organic process of drums and melodies puts a wonderful spin on it. From Hip-Hop, R&B and Electronic, there’s a little something for everyone. HOLLY wanted to share how flexible he can be within genres. You can hear how much he’s learned throughout the years of creating this music. If you don’t know her already, CL was part of one of the biggest female k-pop groups, 2NE1. After going solo, her sound went harder, and she began working with artists like Lil Yachty, Diplo, Skrillex, and more. With a discography that stacked, we can’t wait to see what the new era of CL will bring. An intro song produced by two trap legends like Baauer and Holly seems to be a good start, though. On her Instagram, she says,

‘Post Up’ is the perfect way to introduce the new CL. The South Korean rapper not only mentions her past with the former k-pop group, but she also expresses gratitude for them. However, she doesn’t shy away from letting the world know that she’s onto bigger, better things. Plus, she’s doing all of that while also being the baddest bitch around. ‘Post Up’ is powerful and dynamic, and the song wouldn’t hit as hard without Bauuer and Holly’s booming basslines and quintessential trap “woofs.” Needless to say, if you need an ego booster, this is it, chief.

The fifteen-minute preview that dropped on August 10th was enough to get everyone and their mother hyped for the unprecedented compilation, as the contributors and track names were finally released to the public, with a teaser of each tickling every listener’s curiosity. FUXWITHIT favourites Cozway, capshun and Colson XL, and Jon Casey make their mark on the impressive collection with three experimental bops sure to remind everyone why they are to be watched closely. Sable Valley roster members Knock2, JAWNS, and the label-head himself (alongside Whethan) contribute in the form of fun yet fierce trap and bass brute primed for your living room dance floors. Additional favourites include Kumarion’s drum and bass belter ‘Enemy,’ MASAYOSHI IIMORI’s innovative future bass piece titled ‘Realm’ and Heimanu’s signature NuRave-leaning ‘Worlds,’ but we highly recommend you listen from front to back and pick for yourself.

To start we have Halogenix’s rendition of the hectic DnB record ‘Berry Patch,’ which begins with the familiar melody and vocal sample from the original while incorporating these huge sweeping synths in the build-up. When we reach the drop, those abrasive synths are completely stripped back to reveal pulsating subs that carry the grove between these spazzy high-pitched tones in the breaks. 

Moving on we have IMANU’s glitchy take on ‘Berry Patch,’ which is full of these glitchy and majestic high-end tones combined with these deep trembling subs in the build-up. When the tension his finally released in the drop, all these elements are joined by the original vocal sample, but only this time its infinitely looped, giving this track a hypnotic field to it.

Next up, Two FUX favorites take center stage with Craze and DJ Ride’s take on ‘Yangmei.’ The track starts on the melodic side, with a liquid inspired intro and build-up before the energy is quickly turned all the way up. After a relaxed build-up, the drop offers a welcome contrast, with its gritty synths and stripped Jump-up influenced drum pattern. The two even bless up with some deep wubs on the last drop, which offers a hip-hop-influenced half-time switch-up. 

Next in line is a name that has been taking the underground by storm recently, Noer the Boy, and his rendition of ‘Yangmei.’ We begin with a minimal intro and build-up, that leads to this trapped-out 808 heavy beat accompanied by some of the nastiest sound design you’ll find on the market right now. 

Following this, we have Posij and Former’s take on ‘Goji,’ which offers an emotional and thoughtful breakbeat rendition of Goji. This track is filled with unconventional rhythms and creative percussion elements combined to create this wonderful soundscape.

Wrapping up this remix EP we have Thys’s from Noisia version of ‘Goji’. The DnB legend manages to turn an aggressive record, into one full of beautiful melodies, ambient synths, and emotion. This remix is truly a one-of-a-kind masterpiece and showcases Thys’s world-class talent as a songwriter. Make sure you check out the whole thing down below if you haven’t already!

It’s probably the best move from a public health stand point of view but at the same time it does suck not to be able to enjoy these music events. Because of this me and my friend Mickhel Patterson aka Gl0bal decided that the cancellations shouldn’t stop people from experiencing what’s important, the music. We thought it would be a good time to organize an online festival were people could still enjoy the music while not causing a public health safety hazard.”

With a name like ‘Evil Eye’, you already know it’s going to be as diabolical as possible. In true Holly form, he didn’t disappoint, as you can almost hear his maniacal laughter in the background as the grime washes over your body. Evoking vibes that float freely between mad scientist and necromancer, listeners will be left wildly wiggling to their heart’s desire, while also feeling at their max wicked capabilities. Putting the experimental rightly in experimental trap, ‘Evil Eye’ incorporates a lot of elements from bass music that aren’t associated with traditional trap stylings, giving this track even more attitude and individuality. But those two elements, attitude and individuality, seem to be at the forefront of everything Holly stands for, and are assuredly exemplified throughout the entirety of his discography, and even more so in this most recent example. Starting with the title track, the duo comes out the gate strong with a mesmerizing piano melody which is then faded out to make room to a pulsating lead synth that’s combined with the constant drums drives the rhythm throughout.

Moving on we have ‘Yangmei,’ which begins with a tantalizing drum pattern that carries the groove of the first minute, all the while masterfully crafted ambient synths in the back build the tension. Approaching one minute we are thrown into what seems like an infinite drum loop which adds the beautifully spastic nature of this track. Perhaps what’s most impressive in this track is the constant change in tonality and energy throughout the track.

After this, we have ‘Bramble’, a captivating ambient track, with some of the craziest textures you’ve ever heard. For the full effect on this one, we recommend listening with some quality headphones or nice speakers.

Finishing off strong with ‘Goji,’ we have a tension building melody introduced with some off-the-wall bongo percussion. Throughout the track, these percussion elements are manipulated and sometimes substituted to create a rhythm that is unmatched by anything out right now. Not to mention the high pitched lead synth is straight outta a blaster from Star Wars.
