If you’re from Toronto chances are you’ve at least heard of Hrmxny. He’s a resident at one of the city’s best clubs (The Hoxton), he played Mad Decent Block Party this summer and has opened for some of the biggest acts in electronic music. His breakout year kicked off with the release of his debut EP In Time and he’s closing it out with a follow-up entitled ‘Strange As It Seems’. In many way it’s a representation of the year coming full circle, while also showcasing his evolution within the short time period. Hrmxny’s goal was to create something “real” and it doesn’t get much realer than this. From his Grandmother on the introduction, to the features from friends, the project packs a strong sense of authenticity and rawness while remaining polished. We’ve put together a quick track by track overview and also had the chance to connect with Hrmxny to properly introduce the EP. Check it out below and download it here.

The aforementioned introduction lays the foundation for the entire of the project and smoothly drifts into the title track. ‘Strange As It Seems’ is a blend of dark and hazy ambiance with snapping drums and deep lows. Relatively unknown vocalist tylorj kills it, fusing raps bars with nasel vocal tones that are dripping with swag and hauntingly irresistible. ‘One Way’ sees Preme & taylorj trading verses over a zooted trip-hop back drop reminiscent of DJ Krush. The midpoint ‘Play No Games,’ is pure fun. Pitched and retooled Nate Dogg samples are layered with loungey downtempo bass, while energetic claps boost the energy. With the project winding down ‘Take You Higher’ blends house vibes with club and low key future bass. Though the whole EP impresses it seems good things do come to those who wait, with ‘Nightlife’ proving to be the strongest effort. Jon Vinyl kills the feature while Hrmxny laces a back drop complete with worldly and hypnotizing synths, hard hitting kicks and a minimalistic feel that really lets the vocals shine through. ‘Strange As It Seems’ is powerful, cinematic and cold as a winter’s night in the 6.

Stream the project and check our interview with Hrmxny below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/162394461″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

How would you describe the EP?

I guess I would describe it as real. This was the second round of songs I made after already finishing another full project that I ended up scrapping. These songs were full to me, they made sense in every aspect in the way I wanted people to see my music.

Where did the title come from and what does it represent?

Strange As It Seems came from the eventful year I had & how it was super strange that everything could actually happen so quickly. I never thought I would be doing this two years ago.

What’s the significance of the phone call that opens the EP?

It’s actually my grandma, I woke her up one night when I got the idea and basically told her to just say what she felt would be suitable. Whenever you are super focused on a certain thing, everything else around you gets somewhat left behind, I got very caught up in my own world.

There are vocalists on almost every track. What prompted this? How did you connect with them? What was the writing process like?

Yea, that’s something I will always try to focus on from now on. It’s very important for my music & vision. I try to make “soundcloud” music. Every song has so much more emotion when you put original vocals on it, it tells a better story. Everyone featured are all my friends from Pickering, it’s where I lived pretty much throughout a good part of my older teenage years. Each one of them has had a huge influence on the way I work & act in every aspect of my career, especially Tylor. He’s like my big brother, He’s been by my side since I started, and we’ll always grow together. Each artist pretty much wrote their own verse, I just left it up to them. I wanted everything to be natural.

The project carries a strong theme of change. How have you evolved musically from In Time to now?

I CHANGED….. A LOT. *dj khaled* I hope I evolved, if I haven’t I’m doing something wrong. I’m more confident in the way I make music now, I never used to be able to show people my music, but I guess I’m getting over that now.

What do you want people to take away from this project?

Just listen, listen to everything, especially the lyrics. It’s how all of us express our individual feelings and thoughts that we don’t usually show to people.

In the past year hrmxny has been setting Toronto on fire. With opening slots for Mr. Carmack, Kaytranada, Flosstradamus and Cashmere Cat, the young producer/DJ is gaining fans with every set and proving that he’s one of the city’s most promising talents. Fresh off his festival debut at Bestival Toronto, hrmxny looks forward to a huge tail end of the Summer with a spot playing Mad Decent Block Party and a new EP on the way. We had a chance to connect with hrmxny for an exclusive interview where he discusses his new project, getting life lessons from Flosstradamus, the Toronto music scene and more. Check out the interview below, listen to his fire guest mix and cop the free download.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/214539669″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: The lines between hip-hop and electronic music continue to be blurred. How would you describe your sound?
hrmxny: I honestly don’t think I’ve found my exact sound yet, my brain is so scattered always, so it’s impossible to stick to one thing. For now let’s call it indie trap house.

“It’s like Nosaj Thing meets Jersey Club.”

FUXWITHIT: Tell us about your upcoming EP? Is there a release date/title yet? What’s the direction?
hrmxny: It’s coming. August 21st, hopefully. It’s weird working on a project that’s gonna be under a label, everything is pretty serious now. It’s like talking to a girl, then having to be tied down for the rest of your life. That’s how I feel the music industry is. You start off with small coffee dates then she starts moving her stuff in. Everything automatically becomes real. OH! It’s called ‘Strange As It Seems’ also one of the songs has the same title, it’s really dope. It’s like Nosaj Thing meets Jersey Club. That’s also the direction of the whole EP.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/185459171″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: You’ve opened for some of the biggest acts in the game from Cashmere Cat to Mr. Carmack, Flosstradamus, Kaytranada and more. How have these slots helped you as an artist?
hrmxny: It made me realize that I can’t really rush anything. Josh from Flosstradamus told me to just be patient, if it’s meant to be it will happen. I’ve lived with those words imprinted in my brain. Everyone is just a person, we all started in the same boat at one time. Watching these guys perform just pushes me to become so much more than what I am now. Need to change the ‘opening’ title to ‘headlining’.

FUXWITHIT: You’re pretty deep in the Toronto music scene. Can you give us a few new Toronto artists to be on the look out for?
hrmxny: Ahhhh, there’s so many. Everyone is hustling for the top spot out here, nothing is handed to you. Buuuuuuut, if I was to name like 5 close homies killing it right now it would be: Tylor Santos, Jazz Cartier, HARRISON, Daniel Caesar & OBESON. Those guys make me want to become a better artist. We support each other 100% and that’s what this city lacks and needs.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/185459167″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: You recently had the chance to perform at Bestival Toronto. How was it?
hrmxny: Yea! That was wild, it was wet and muddy, but I was in a room with artificial grass so I can’t complain. I had no idea what I was going to play, so I just played whatever felt right at the time & it worked out pretty well. PS. s/o to the dudes jumping so hard infront of me & almost knocking my computer over.

FUXWITHIT: You’re going to be playing Mad Decent Block Party this year. How does it feel to be part of such a massive event? How did that come together?
hrmxny: It’s super weird, I always ask “why” whenever I get a big opportunity. Everything still trips me out. It feels awesome though, it hasn’t really hit me fully yet. It will feel real the day of when I’m about to play, I’ll probably throw up. Maaaaan, EMBRACE is the squad. Everyone there has my back 100%, especially Adam & Biz. I played the MDBP After Party last year, and Diplo & Walshy Fire fucked with me, so they asked me to play the actual thing this year. I low-key sent them a song, that should be released soon, still just waiting on that.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/185459169″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: In addition to playing events, you’ve been running many of your own. What made you decide to start throwing events?
hrmxny: I needed to get my name out there somehow, this was all before I had the major EMBRACE backing I have now. If you’re a DJ in Toronto and aren’t involved in the “scene” we have now, it will be super hard to build your name in your own city. It’s also really fun organizing an event, I stopped because it became more about the money rather than the passion for the music.

FUXWITHIT:You have been wearing a mask at many of your recent performances, what’s the significance behind it?hrmxny: The mask usually comes out when I’m feeling extremely ignorant or drunk. There’s no real significance behind it at all. I’m a very strange person and I just do whatever I feel like doing at the time. Maybe everything stems from listening to a lot of MF DOOM & Captain Murphy.

FUXWITHIT: Any final words?
hrmxny: STOP BEING SO SERIOUS WITH EVERYTHING YOU DO. HAVE FUN. ENJOY SHIT. MAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY YOUR BITCH. That is all.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/214539669″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
