Few artists in the bass realm can create completely new sonic universes with their music. KOAN Sound, Culprate, False Noise and Alon Mor are names that come to mind when the words musical expedition are thrown around, but one name that sometimes falls under the radar, and wrongly so, is Hudson Lee. From manning Upscale, a label that showcases mind-boggling journeys from a plethora of similar-minded artists, to creating his own unique masterpieces, the Canadian producer has made it his mission to share exquisitely crafted works, no matter the origin.

Continuing upon this theme today, we get to experience Hudson Lee’s sophomore album in full via his label, and as one could expect, the twelve-track, fifty-two-minute Reflex Angle is a display of true sonic mastery. A follow-up to the equally-entertaining Headspaces from 2019, Reflex Angle builds upon the years of work that Hudson Lee has poured into his craft and culminates in a fantastic voyage through bass, melodies and textures.

Reflex Angle is not just a collection of individual songs slapped together to form an album – it’s a narrative told through sound that gives listeners a glimpse into the mind of a genius. Featuring tracks with longtime friends and frequent collaborators False Noise, Alexander Panos and Frequent, as well as nine solo works, the project spans a multitude of genres and styles that go beyond bass music without ever sounding disconnected or out of place; a skill that Hudson Lee et al. have all conquered gracefully. Massive, all-encompassing basses that wrap your entire soul in an oddly soothing fashion are as present as soft, complex melodies that will make you feel as if you are floating through delicate pink clouds. Hudson Lee manages to balance contrast perfectly in his album, creating an equilibrium between highs and lows throughout the ensemble.

Simply put, Reflex Angle is incredible. Don’t miss it below, and be sure to catch Upscale Fest happening on Twitch this weekend.

A constant front-runner in pushing boundary-breaking bass music to the masses, Inspected truly never disappoint. Without constraining themselves to a particular genre, the UK-based collective have been able to simultaneously mold the popularity of unconventional electronic music and bring underground talents to the limelight, most notably through their scarce yet substantial Powered by Inspected compilation series. Pairing industry veterans with promising up-and-coming artists has given previous instalments a very approachable appeal, and Inspected are well on their way to accomplishing this feat once again with the third collection due on Friday.

Lucky data:base subscribers have already gotten their hands on the sixteen-track journey that is Powered by Inspected #3, but since the tracks are slowly appearing on SoundCloud, we figured we’d highlight these early and get you prepared for what’s to come. Netherlands-based Buunshin led the way in high gear early last week with the menacing ‘Trauma’ that is equally sinister as it is mesmerizing. The attention to detail throughout the neurofunk monster is unparalleled, and kicks off the compilation in style.

Similarly awe-inducing but in a completely different way, Hudson Lee and Tom Finster provide an expedition through bass music with their contribution to the collection of tracks. ‘Flymmer’ draws on the beauty of melody and simplicity in the opening moments to lure you in, before blurring the lines between genres as the track progresses. Both musical and gritty, the pair of producers have crafted a grandiose, ethereal piece that exquisitely contrasts the opening single.

Enigmatic bass aficionado Protial followed with a track that is quintessential to his style. ‘All Caps’ is quick to the punch, featuring everything that we love about his inimitable signature sound. Repeated vocal samples, mind-bending synths and crisp percussion all arranged in a hypnotizing manner provide Protial’s welcome introduction to Inspected.

The last piece released at the beginning of last week was Monuman‘s ‘Hurts When I’m With You,’ sampling the popular ‘I Wanna Be Down’ by Brandy in a rather unusual way. A slow yet ominous bass ballad, ‘Hurts When I’m With You’ builds gradually in a soul-stirring fashion, before the vocal samples are juggled in the latter half to give listeners a sense of familiarity all while remaining mysterious and captivating.

With Vellum curing your Monday blues with the unique, highly-anticipated bass house belter titled ‘Bungle‘ and the promise of more from Chee, COPYCATT, and RefraQ among others, fans are in for a real treat. If the range and versatility in these early singles are any indication, Powered by Inspected #3 is an early contender for compilation of the year. Stay tuned for more soon.

Among the best at combining the minimal aspects of the genre with soul-stirring melodies and riffs are Loftii, the joint project between Hudson Lee and Matt Mcwaters. Following up on their 2018 album and 2019 dual single, Loftii are back with the first single from their upcoming album, due this March.

Inspired by the aesthetics of an overcast day in Toronto, ‘It Was Foggy This Morning’ is exactly what one could expect from these two talented artists. Textures surround your soul like a warm plush blanket throughout the duration of the track, with gentle chords layered to provide a pleasing sensation. ‘It Was Foggy This Morning’ is not a festival banger meant for the main stage, but a calming, soothing piece that has much more depth and emotion packed with it. Don’t miss the lead single below and stay tuned for more from Loftii.

Among the best at creating truly awe-inspiring pieces, Frequent and Hudson Lee can combine vivacious energy with perplexing soundscapes like no other. While independently demonstrating their innate musical talents countless times over, their joining of forces always transcends expectations and barriers within the electronic music realm. When these two incredible musicians collaborate, the last thing one should expect is a cookie-cutter, three-minute, two-drop song made for the masses. Instead, one should open their mind to a journey through sound, allowing it to get lost in the intricacies of their productions.

Last coming together on ‘Windows‘ earlier this year, Frequent and Hudson Lee are back with another beautiful opus titled ‘Forest Fires’ that we are ecstatic to premiere today. When asked about how it all came together, Hudson states, “It was a track I had initially written as a part of a score for my sister’s aerial gymnastics troupe, in which she would swing in front of visuals of a forest fire on red ribbons. Nolan (Frequent) was interested in the unique direction I was headed in and I asked him if he wanted to expand on the idea. We slaved away at the track for a bit, talking over the internet with screen and audio share. When I went to Denver to go work on music with Nolan later in the year, we worked on the track over several sessions in the moments where we weren’t working on our collaborative record. I’m really proud of the track while I think it represents a new era of some of the most unique music we’ve made.”

We couldn’t agree more with the last statement. Ethereal atmospheres are depicted through graceful synths with magical effects transporting you to the depths of an enchanted forest. A vivid balance between complex electronic sounds and underlying musicality, ‘Forest Fires’ is the culmination of two forward-thinking creatives coming together in a single electrifying piece. Dive in below.

Clear your agenda, turn off your phone, make yourself comfortable, open your mind. Ladies and gentlemen we are in the presence of an absolute masterpiece, a rare example of art in its purest and most powerful form. If you love music, then Headspace will be your new obsession.

I don’t know if he’s aware of it, but Hudson Lee has made the world a better place to live in with this album.

As result of years of work (yes, years), the 16-track project is presented to the public as “a collection of short stories”, a compilation of “the most intense emotional experiences I’d had throughout my life while writing it,” as he describes it. Indeed, like a story it’s exactly how it should be enjoyed. Hudson himself literally encourages “anyone who listens not to skip through. The whole album is continuous with key changes, transitions between tracks, and re-contextualized motifs and sounds.”

But wait, if you’re already thinking about a monolithic concept album, homogeneous form start to finish you’re going in the wrong direction. Headspace is, to say the least, kaleidoscopic. Almost unrecognizable in some moments if it weren’t for Lee’s peculiar style that’s always perceptible regardless of the genre or guise of the track. It’s like diving into a James Joyce’s novel with his stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose. If read occasionally, ‘Dubliners’ and ‘Ulysses’ may please or intrigue as well, but they become sensational pieces only if taken from the very beginning to the end. Only by having a global vision of these works, all the shades, the various voices, the points of view, the characters we meet during the reading, will all fit together, making the great artistic machine behind it work. In the same way, although Headspace contains extraordinary singles able to shine with their own light (‘Labyrinth’, ‘Stay’, ‘Way of Thought’ are my favourites), only when they’re framed together to complete the puzzle do they become a memorable and timeless piece of art.

What the album explores are traditional human experiences (on SoundCloud you can find a little description under each track), but thanks to the exquisite and clever sound design, the stories are expressed in a very unique way that I’ve never encountered before. Every emotion is portrayed extremely sharply, clearly. It’s like the artist presents himself without any filters or barriers, completely naked. And, as often, nudity tests, strikes deeply, make people definitely feel something, freedom or maybe distress.

Headspace is not a complex album outright. It can be, if you want to embrace it in its entirety, but, as mentioned above, it can serve the purpose of a lighter and purely aesthetic listen. The only thing that is forbidden, in my opinion, is to remain passive or apathetic in its presence. Let Headspace tease and drag you in its reality.
