Nikki Nair & Hudson Mohawke’s ‘Set The Roof’ Emerges As A Fire Hit For Club Music Fans

Neither Nikki Nair nor Hudson Mohawke are keen on pigeon-holing themselves into any particular genre, and Set the Roof is a quintessential example of this “I do what I want” mentality. With a host of A-list production credits behind him (including Kanye West, Drake, and Future, to name a few), Hudson Mohawke has spent years establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the beatmaker scene (not to mention his work as half of TNGHT). Nikki Nair, likewise, is no stranger to success with releases on Dirtybird, Mad Decent, Fantastic Voyage, and a slew of other labels in the past five years that might seem inconsistent to those unfamiliar with his musical versatility.

As a matter of principle, it seems, both Hudson and Nikki are keen on keeping fans on their toes with an ever-changing but familiar sound behind their releases. Whatever reputation you may have of them in your mind right now, Set the Roof is sure to make you question it.

The eponym track plays like a microcosm of the album as a whole with its rollercoaster of clubby, acid techno basslines in the first half that subtly roll into the subwoofer-stomping second half. ‘More Recently,’ ‘Demuro’ and ‘Wait A Minute’ continue the fast-paced BPM magic that sounds like it could have come straight out of a Detroit basement in the 90s. ‘Long Ago’ takes a familiar sample (that this author won’t spoil here) and flips it on its head in a fantastically cartoony, bouncy way. ‘Generator’ is a drum masterpiece that will appeal to fans of breaks and soothing piano riffs, perfectly serving as a poetic end to the high energy of the tracks preceding it.

Warp Records truly has a gem on their hands with this album. Nikki Nair and Hudson Mohawke have shown time and time again that they have the talent and seemingly innate musical ability to nail whatever project they set their minds to, with Set the Roof only being the latest in that line. We’ve no idea what direction they’ll pivot next, but it’ll surely be a work of art. Until then, be sure to check out Set the Roof below.

TNGHT Are Back Again With ‘TUMS’

TNGHT are back once again. The elusive duo that is Hudson Mohawke and Lunice have remained relatively quiet after returning to the scene in 2019 with their II EP and ‘Clever Pants’ bonus track. Anytime we see the trap legends pop up its instant excitement. ‘TUMS’ gives fans just what they’re craving from some new TNGHT. The intro packs a gritty bounce with maniacal laughter that teeters throughout. The synths are massive and triumphant while the vocal encourages listeners to “get loose.” The stripped-down mid-way switch-up is the highlight for me, letting the bass and percussion speak volumes. Exciting without being overly complex, this is just what we needed.

The release also comes with an on-brand and extremely uncanny video. Listen below and check the visual. It’s unclear if this is a one-off release or the start of more new TNGHT music but we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open.

As one of the undisputed kings of trap, Hudson Mohawke never ceases to impress. His latest feat? Dropping a surprise 14-track album of unreleased gems just 11 days after dropping his Heart Of The Night EP.

“Back at start of lockdown I decided I was gona release some music of mine that I’d just rediscovered, after thinking it was lost,” the legend tweeted just last night. With that, the Glasgow-based artist decided to drop a thirty-minute excursion through electronic music, offering a plethora of varied styles in the 14-track endeavour. Ranging in length from 42 seconds to 5 minutes, and in style from hip-hop beats to experimental trap, HudMo shares an eccentric mix of tracks sure to please a wide array of listeners. Personal favourites include the laidback, feel-good ‘Animo’ and ‘Tar,’ as well as the highly-awaited ‘100HM,’ but we highly recommend you dive into the collection and pick your favourites below.

TNGHT Unveil New Track ‘Clever Pants’

TNGHT aren’t done yet! After making their highly anticipated return with ‘Serpent’ and ‘Dollaz,’ leading to their sophomore EP II, the trap icons have blessed us with ‘Clever Pants’. Released a hidden/bonus track from the EP, ‘Clever Pants’ is an absurd banger in the truest sense. Opening with a hypnotic flute loop and some snappy percs this will have you on its hook from the outset. As they add in worldly elements, animalistic samples and some over the top but addictive chants, the track becomes ridiculously awesome. Anytime TNGHT gives us new music we’re excited and ‘Clever Pants’ did not let us down.

TNGHT‘s return is officially in full effect. With the release of their new II EP earlier this week, we thought there would be no better throwback for today than a classic TNGHT banger from their first EP. ‘Higher Ground’ is the definition of a classic trap banger and a perfect exemplifier of what makes TNGHT so iconic.

Opening with a simple yet addictive vocal loop, the duo layer snappy drums and hitting bass. A riser gives way to the introduction of the trap horns. Providing a powerful and regal energy, the horns take the track from banging to outright epic. These horns helped define trap horns, and all trap horns that would follow. Expertly stripping elements away to let the track breathe and bringing them back provides additional dynamic depth. 7 years after its release, producers are still trying to create trap records with the punch and addictiveness of ‘Higher Ground’. TNGHT Drops New Single ‘Dollaz’ + Announces EP ‘II’

TNGHT are really back! After releasing their first track in years last month, the legendary duo is back with their second single and the announcement of their upcoming EP II. ‘Dollaz’ kicks off with alluring vocal bends and hypnotic synths before the track is stripped back and “they just Dollaz” loops. After almost completely stripping the backing away, the bottom drops out of the track, leading into pounding percussion and heavy low end. From there TNGHT experiments with adding and removing elements throughout to keep listeners on their toes. ‘Dollaz’ is weird, addictive, and bangin’, we’d expect nothing less.

As godfathers of the electronic trap movement, fans could not be more excited. Marking their return comes ‘Serpent’ an animalistic trap banger that is sure to dominate sets for the remainder of the year. The track combines wild yelps with dizzying synths, precision perussion and absolutely devastating bass. Much like the visual accompaniment, this is one is straight up crazy. Listen below. With rumours swirling of a possible TNGHT reunion, I thought what better time than to pick a TNGHT classic for our Tracks You May Have Missed segment. Hudson Mohawke and Lunice’s collaborative project helped to define trap music and their records still go as hard today, as they did over 6 years ago. Today we’re going to showcase ‘Top Floor,’ one of the standouts from their EP. Combining ominous undertones with exotic chants, the duo create a scene that’s nothing short of mesmerizing. When the drums and bass hit ‘Top Floor’ takes listeners to a heavenly state. This track feels like an opium high amidst the clouds. It’s a euphoric masterwork that demands constant replays.
