Bassline on Never Say Die: Black Label? Fans of the imprint and of Akeos, Hukae and Claybrook have likely seen that question everywhere on social media over the last week, and we are simply here to confirm this rumour. An unlikely adventure from three solid forces in the bass scene, ‘Skeng’ eliminates all notion of what one should expect from a Never Say Die: Black Label release, and opens endless doors as to what the future may hold.

Teased for months in sets from all three artists as well as many others, ‘Skeng’ is aptly titled considering its British origins, but the undeniable influence from the North American bass scene makes it a well-rounded piece sure to have a global impact. Boasting a tempo on the higher end of the bassline spectrum, ‘Skeng’ wastes no time getting into the thick of things, before the triumphant triumvirate unleash a highly-energetic display of crisp sound design without ever loosing the track’s seamless groove.

Dive into ‘Skeng’ below.

The last two weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions for Hukae fans, and surely even more so for the artist himself. From posting a worrying message on Twitter less than two weeks ago (and thankfully appearing well post-incident), to announcing his third EP of the calendar year, Hukae has kept his followers on their toes throughout 2020. Storming onto the scene with the ingenious Dirty Talk EP, the producer has since demonstrated that his creativity and proclivity for creating gems is not a one-off, consistently pushing the boundaries of bass with every new release.

With the Future EP set to hit streaming platforms via Never Say Die: Black Label on Friday, Hukae continues to showcase this sonic prowess, delivering four monstrous beasts that could individually set crowds ablaze. Ahead of the project’s full release, we have the honour of premiering ‘Doozy,’ one of the producer’s most impressive tunes to date.

As the introductory track to his 2020 Showcase, ‘Doozy’ is one many have been awaiting, and the full version does not disappoint. The piece is a flex of the gnarly flow that Hukae has mastered, as the artist is able to create yet another five-minute long brute that never grows old or repetitive. The introduction is captivating, the drops are menacing, and the attention to detail is meticulous. From the rattling top layers to the grungy sub-bass, Hukae has once again outdone himself, creating a soundscape capable of brutally hitting listeners in their core, while somehow making it danceable and fun.

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Hukae, and to a wicked project ahead. Don’t miss ‘Doozy’ below.

Boasting a terrorizing sound capable of destroying the strongest of foundations, MARAUDA has quickly catapulted to the top of dubstep scene through a relentless approach to heavy music. With releases on some of the biggest labels in the game such as Never Say Die and Disciple Round Table, the Sydney-based producer has proven his strengths time and time again, but he has recently started to release music on his own personal imprint, Malignant Music. Prior to last week, only he had put out music on the label, but all that has now changed in massive fashion. Opening the platform to fellow heavy-hitters, Malignant Music has unleashed its debut compilation titled Malignant Vol. 1, and it’s bigger and better than one could even fathom.

What do you get when you take the hottest names in the dubstep scene, round up some of their most anticipated unreleased material, and package it all into one devastating ensemble? The answer is Malignant Vol. 1. One might think this is an exaggeration, but a quick look through the tracklist reveals the true catastrophic nature of this compilation. From the label-head himself releasing the guttural ‘Laryngitis’ and the ridiculous ‘Blunder 2.0,’ to Aweminus and Subfiltronik finally delivering their highly-awaited ‘Subminus,’ veterans are well-represented in Malignant Vol. 1. Add to that some boundary-pushing up-and-comers such as Hukae, Papa Khan and SYZY, as well as established big guns Calcium and Krischvn, and one gets the debut Malignant Music compilation. Don’t miss it below.

Hukae’s got you covered with the eclectic ‘Zonked,’ first teased in his 2020 Showcase, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’d be a nuisance to try to do every track on the compilation justice, as each stands well on its own and contributes well to the ensemble. With Tek Genesis, Super Future, FLY, Floret Loret, Khiva, Noer The Boy, NIK P and Phantom Nexus rounding out The Prophecy: Volume 2, we highly recommend you dive in and let this be the soundtrack to your weekend.

Few are keeping dubstep, and bass music in general, as fun and fresh as Hukae. Catapulting himself into the calendar year with the Dirty Talk EP, the UK-based producer quickly showed that his ingenuity is limitless, particularly with the project’s title track going leaps and bounds beyond what most dream to attain in terms of innovation. His 2020 Showcase further displayed this forward-thinking mindset, creating tons of hype for a plethora of IDs ranging in genre from dubstep, to drum & bass, to bassline. To the pleasure of many, a handful of these unreleased gems will see the light of day in his upcoming Killjoy EP released via Never Say Die: Black Label, and to keep you all at ease until then, we have the immense pleasure of premiering ‘Static’ today.

“At the moment we are all static. It’s very easy to lose motivation times like these when you’re basically a prisoner in your own home due to a global pandemic,” Hukae states about ‘Static.’ He adds, “it’s ironic because this song has actually been on a hiatus for nearly 6 months now and had no motivation to finish this until now. It’s strange how in a time like this motivation for me is the highest it has ever been and I hope anyone that doesn’t have much motivation right now finds some too.”

Despite being on hold for so long, a single listen of ‘Static’ quickly shows how Hukae is constantly ahead of the curve. The introduction is oddly innocent with a soft melody building intrigue as more layers are quickly added. A masterful use of call-and-response drives the energy of the drops, as a wonky melody is met with glitchy, granular synths, all topped above quintessentially crisp Hukae percussion. Heavy on the drops yet somehow still melodic and dynamic, ‘Static’ is an undeniable standout in Hukae’s already-impressive repertoire. Don’t miss it below.

The Sinister Six are taking over Never Say Die: Black Label one release at a time. First came Akeos’ mind-melting Labyrinth EP, followed in style by Neonix’s equally enthralling Puppets EP. Today, UK-based Hukae looks to continue this takeover with a four-track project of his own, the Dirty Talk EP.

“This EP is an embodiment of me as an artist and a person. My heart and soul has gone into this project and I am so happy with how it has turned out. The goal was to make every song sound completely different from the last and really push boundaries in the scene,” Hukae states about his newest collection of tracks. With a single listen-through, one will quickly acknowledge this forward-thinking mindset.

The project’s title track, first teased in mixes from the likes of Subtronics and Aweminus among others, pushes the ingenuity of bass music to new heights. ‘Dirty Talk’ is oddly entertaining from start to finish, never growing old despite its mechanical nature. It’s quirky, unique and almost comical without escaping the heavy undertones one would expect from a Black Label release. ‘Boingo 2,’ a follow-up to the banger that is ‘Boingo,’ plays on the sounds of the original yet is unique in its own right, showcasing Hukae’s monstrous sound design once more. ‘UJ’ with Neonix is a futuristic beast that employs lasers and a robotic aesthetic throughout, again not overbearing with its heaviness but sure to please a wide array of bass fans. ‘Haze’ caps off the Dirty Talk EP with arguably the most headbang-inducing tune of the collection, with pulsating bass stabs carrying the flow of the track.
