Looking to ride the momentum from his FUXWITHIT guest mix and interview dating back to late May, as well as his self-released Solipsism EP from early March, Ian Munro is back today with two new singles on bitbird. The pairing of artist and label is a no-brainer, as the New Zealander has demonstrated a consistent knack for emotive pieces while bitbird has been a platform to showcase innovation since its inception. It’s not the first time Ian Munro makes his mark on the imprint, either, as he contributed to Gouldian Finch 03 in 2019. This time, however, the creative takes the full spotlight.

In ‘Let Her’ featuring chilling vocals from IVY RED, Ian Munro paints a picture of regret within a relationship. With the lyrics, IVY RED was inspired by a “naïve love…when you put your walls down, anyone can get in.” The aura of the track is melancholic and gloomy, tinged with a sprinkle of hope as a result of Ian Munro’s flawless mastery of the instrumentals.

The second piece, ‘Alone, For Now,’ is more upbeat, with lyrics depicting acceptance of a mistake. Amethyst provides gentle vocals over Ian Munro’s futuristic production in the introduction and middle section, while the producer takes center-stage with enthralling, all-encompassing drops that evoke more emotion with each passing bar.

Altogether, the pair of tracks are sure to make you introspective about certain life decisions, while impressing you through their pristine production. Don’t miss ‘Let Her / Alone, For Now’ below.

Diving into a flourishing sea of sensation, Ian Munro has proven to be one of the most diverse and unified artists in the industry. His long and hard working journey has taken him through many different places throughout his life. Soul searching every step of the way while sharing an everlasting touch of riches. And with his recent Solipsism EP, the musician managed to create a whole new and colorful world for not only himself, but for his listeners as well.

Time and time again, he’s shared nothing but pure healing remedies for the broken and the lost. Curing different shades of negativity with every release. Poetic masterpieces are what you’ll find throughout his discography. Speaking to you in a vast and meaningful fashion. Shedding tears with a star-striking smile on your face. And now, it is with our utmost excitement to present our next guest mix + interview with nonother, than the legend himself! With this interview, we talked with him about an array of topics to really pick his brain and explore the true side of his vision and presence. As for the mix, he’s blessed our auras with enormous amounts of emotion with a couple of treats in store.

In regards to the mix, what can the listeners expect from this journey? Pure emotion or some callbacks to your heavier vibe from before?

I think a part of my sound will always be rooted in my previous work – but to me, nothing speaks to me quite as much as that emotional depth. Expect the unexpected I guess, but know everything has a place emotionally in the journey!

What inspired you to take the creative route in life? Is anyone else in your family experienced in the arts?

My upbringing always facilitated creativity and I’m forever grateful for that. My Dad works as an Art Director, and my step-mum is a photographer, so I guess I’ve always been submerged in the visual side of things. That being said, my Mum’s been the biggest driving force for my music. She’s always exposed me to new music, practically raising me on punk haha. I think it all kinda played a part, but without her driving me to all my guitar & drum lessons I definitely wouldn’t be where I am.

Your melodies and sense of storytelling always blow us away. Were you trained by someone when you were younger? Or self-taught?

Thank you, that means the world! I was taught guitar and drums very informally — learnt a lot about playing, but not a lot about music theory. For the most part, the theory and songwriting side is all self-taught!

If you could describe your life so far in a couple of words, what would they be?

Work in progress.

It felt fake, and so inauthentically me. I guess, I just wanted to make art that fulfilled me, not just as a creative, but as an individual.

You’ve gone through some interesting changes within your vision over the years. Can you explain how your experiences in life have shaped your sound into what it is today?

I think for me, it was a part of some big musical coming of age. I’ve always struggled with my mental health, granted, I’ve only really understood the gravity of it all over the last few years since beginning my recovery — but part of this process has really redefined my music’s expression. Music with depth has always resonated with me more, and I think previously, I was stuck in this loop of making and releasing music in order to ‘exist’ in the business. It felt fake, and so inauthentically me. I guess, I just wanted to make art that fulfilled me, not just as a creative, but as an individual.

Recently you released a song with jediwill1999. How was stepping into the alternative rock realm with your own style?

I’ve always been a massive fan of emo music — and the merging of that culture with hip hop, and now, more electronic elements has felt so natural to me as a listener. I’m a huge fan of Jed and what others within this scene are doing, and it’s incredible to be able to write something a little different from what I’m used to, and to be a part of something so refreshing and unique.

I guess I believe in a certain degree of chaos.

If you could go back in time and talk to your past self, what advice would you bestow upon yourself?

Nothing! I guess I believe in a certain degree of chaos. If things didn’t happen the way they did, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Of course I have ‘regrets’, but I’m trying to learn to just take them as they are and move on!

Through this whole pandemic, what were some activities you’d do to keep your mentality and creativity at ease?

I’ve started doing yoga and meditation daily, which really helped me have some semblance of a routine haha. I’ve been cooking a lot, and have started learning how to ferment/pickle too (my sauerkraut recipe goes crazy). My method for writing has always been ‘don’t force it’ — so I try not to get in the studio unless I really want to!

Any specific places you travel to in order to clear your mind and soul?

Grab a coffee and hit the dog park 100000%. Love watching those little idiots run around, it’s weirdly meditative haha.

I’ve got a real love-hate relationship with collaborating, but I’m trying to get better at it!

Who are some artists you can see yourself collaborating with in the future?

Oooooh this is a tough one. I’ve got a real love-hate relationship with collaborating, but I’m trying to get better at it! I’d love to do more prod. — people like Glaive and Lewis Grant are definitely on my list. In the electronic world, I’d love to see what Moore Kismet and I would make — AWAY and I have been talking for way too long about doing something too.

Thinking of the past, what were some of your favorite shows you’ve played?

My Liminal Release Party was hands down one of the best nights of my life — so special to have so many friends playing and so many friends in the crowd. Playing Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland with Quix, Montell2099 and Yvng Jalapeño was definitely another incredibly memorable night!

For what the future holds — who knows? I’ll still be here though, doing my thing.

Where do you see the Ian Munro project in a couple of years?

I really want to focus more on highlighting my voice, so expect a lot more of that. For what the future holds — who knows? I’ll still be here though, doing my thing.

The time has come upon us. Ian Munro returns with a brand new body of work that speaks to your inner mindset. A project so powerful, you’ll question whether or not it’s real, thanks to his impressive and intricate creativity. He calls it the Solipsism EP. For many months, Ian has been showcasing his new vision through past mixes and more. Opening the world to his true and brand new potential through rhythm and sound. His journey of evolution has impacted the hearts of many. Making any listener instantly fall in love with his touch of gold he imprints on every release. And with this newest creation, he’s skyrocketing into more new territories for himself and his audience. He’s even recruited some incredible singer/songwriters such as Dabl and Bijou Violet to increase the atmospheres into overdrive.

The Solipsism EP is a flower bed of rebirth. Feeling every bit of emotion and thought through his production, Ian has conducted some highly intelligent works like never before. Every track honors the similar space it’s been put into but differs from each other quite organically. Right from the first track to the last, it’s art we can’t put into words to fully honor its presence and after effect. You can tell Ian put everything he’s ever learned over the years into one solid and gorgeous project. The glitchy and bubbly sound design completely takes over you like waves of water crashing down. Creating new life and characteristics. Not to mention how his own voice can instantly cure your dull and dreary days. Also honoring Dabl and Bijou Violet’s vocals so majestically was a heartwarming bow to their power within the spectrum. Their soft yet impactful tones completely added a brand new tone and layer to his craft. It’s a group of gems you’ll forever cherish for years to come.

Ian has worked long and hard to give us this magnificent EP. It still feels surreal after every listen. Making the memorable feeling stick with you no matter what. We’re excited to see where Ian’s journey goes from here. So make sure to go show your utmost support by streaming his Solipsism EP everywhere!

Throughout the years, Ian has shown his true raw talent within the spectrum. Each song he’s made has touched many hearts and souls. Creating feelings of self-discovery and peace.
‘Tourniquet’ talks about the struggles which happen inside one’s head. Using the tourniquet as a metaphor in a gorgeous and touching fashion. Each note being played tugs at your heartstrings. Bringing you into a light you thought you’d never see again. His lush vocals together with careful processing really take the main stage along with glitch-filled melodies. There’s no telling where the track will go because each section is a major treat and surprise. Housing every little element to live and sing in unison. There’s never a dull moment because of how invested the listener will be. You can even hear some pieces of sound he’s used in past songs to pay respects to his roots.

In late spring Ian Munro unveiled his impressive sophomore EP Liminal. The project is his most personal and honest to date, showcasing a new chapter in his artistic evolution. Giving the project new life comes Liminal (The Remixes), a 5 track effort that sees some of the best underground producers re-imagining Ian’s body of work. Releasing today via Quality Goods Records, it features stellar remixes from CORTR, MICA, Serion, Rad Hatter, and nekolai. While the entire EP impresses, we have the honour of premiering nekolai’s rework of the project’s standout single ‘Again, Again.’

nekolai‘s re-imagination is picturesque and atmospheric. This listens like a warm breeze on a desolate beach. Soft synth pads build as the soundscape is filled out. The emotive vocals pull listeners in with a moving allure. The drop is a breathe of fresh air that’s riddled with hopefulness and promise. The backing and vocals are intertwined in a stunning and enthralling dance, ever progressing and evolving. As the vocals echo out, a stirring outro of keys and strings provides the perfect resolve.

Stream ‘Again, Again’ below and check out the full remix EP here.

Ian Munro is one of the biggest up-and-coming acts coming out of the AUS/NZ scene. And that’s a real accomplishment with how fiercely the AUS/NZ scene pumps out artists of high-tier caliber. Having released his debut EP in 2017 with UZ’s label, Quality Goods Records, he’s gone on to release with Bitbird and has completed a headlining tour. It’s clear to see that Ian has a bright future ahead of him, and he’s making his mark with his second EP, titled Liminal.

Liminal feels like the culmination of what Ian Munro has been working towards the past two years. His sound has slowly changed over time from heavy bangers, like ‘Lost In You,’ to more future bass oriented tracks, like ‘Fever Dream’. Watching him develop his sound over the past three years has been incredible and Liminal pushes the boundaries of future bass as Ian takes you on a journey full of ethereal vibes and heartfelt sounds.

Liminal begins with ‘Palimpsest’, which is an incredible introduction to Ian’s new sound, filled with soft, calming vocals and thick atmosphere. ‘Murmur’ is a stand out track on the EP; starting with dreamy vocals, it crashes into an emotional, lush synth that takes the listeners’ breath away. ‘Rush’ feat. Still Haze is the most experimental track off Liminal, imploring wonky synths that collide together to produce a beautiful sort of chaos over a sliding, uplifting melody. Paired with the vocals in the second drop, Ian has created a masterpiece of sound with this track. Possibly one of the most anticipated tracks off Liminal would be Ian’s collab with trap don and Quality Goods Records founder, UZ. ‘Without Me’ featuring Somber is a serenade of arpeggiated synths that pairs marvelously with Somber’s vocals on the track. Finally, we come to ‘Again, Again’, the single he released prior to the EP. Full of moving vocals, the track veers off course at the drop and erupts into a ocean of disconnected sounds that Ian has managed to stitch together. The contrast Ian Munro creates in ‘Again, Again’ is one of the most alluring parts of the entire track, and possibly the most interesting piece in the entire project.

Liminal is an awe-inspiring piece of work and it’s clear to see why this took two years for Ian to put out. He’s really pushing the post-future bass sound and delivering it in full force. With half of 2019 left, it’s an exciting time to see what he’ll do next.

Ian has also created a visual experience to accompany his Liminal EP, which you can watch below.

A stellar change in direction last year saw Ian Munro set the stage for his future vision, with tracks such as ‘Fever Dream‘ and his more recent ‘Violence‘ on bitbird’s Gouldian Finch 03 providing a strong foundation for the rising star to build upon.

Today, the Auckland-based producer returns to Quality Goods Records with ‘Again, Again,’ the first single from his upcoming Liminal EP, further pushing his newfound style to genre-defying boundaries. “‘Again, Again’ to me really hits this beautiful moment that sits right in between melancholy and hope. Never quite gravitating more towards either – but occupying both at the same time,” Ian Munro states about his latest.

As he has done so often since bursting onto the scene, the New Zealander sets himself apart from the crowd once more with this gripping track. Expansive, searching vocals carve out a path over its steadily developing backdrop of sound design, as Ian Munro gradually builds the track to an apex of enthralling tension. A deliciously deep, rolling beat brings about a rich undercurrent to its sweeping melodies and refined trap touches, all washed down with those warm, low-frequency hums and warped twangs.

‘Again, Again’ is yet another concrete example of Ian Munro’s evolving musical genius. Don’t miss it below.

Ian Munro exploded onto the scene in 2016 with his stellar debut Stay Lit. The Quality Goods Records release was a strong statement that commanded our attention. From there he collaborated with some of the best artists out including QUIX, Hydraulix, Oski, UZ and more. As 2018 kicked off, Ian began switching the tone and direction of his music. ‘Right Now’ hinted at a possible new direction but it was ‘Yours’ that really reshaped his trajectory. The track sees Ian Munro exploring a moodier and more emotional atmosphere with just enough bang. After its release, Munro took most of the year off to fully reset and hone in on his direction. The isolation aided his journey and he’s back in full force, ready to takeover 2019. He just dropped an incredible new single in ‘Fever Dream,’ and today we have the pleasure of premiering his brand new ‘Fever Dream’ mix. With so much promise on the horizon we felt it was the perfect time to connect with Ian for a chat. We talk about his time away from the spotlight, working with Quality Goods Records and how he overcame self-doubt. Listen to the mix and check out the interview below. You can download the mix here and check the tracklist below the interview.

You’ve been quiet for the back half of 2018. What have you been up to?

I’ve been taking my time to reset and rediscover my direction. It’s felt weird doing it all behind closed doors, and not letting anyone in – but I feel like the isolation was a necessary part of the process. I’m happier now, writing the music that I want as opposed to the music I was expected to write.

There’s rumours of an EP in the works, can you tell us about the project?

There’s been an ‘EP’ in the works for years now haha. But yes – my sophomore EP is nearly done, and will be out towards the start of 2019.

I’m so thankful to have had a team that is so supportive backing me. I think that’s what sets them apart. It’s not about industry politics. It’s not about numbers or money. It’s just about good fucking music.

You’ve been working with QGR for a few years now. What’s the experience been like? What makes them different from other labels?

Honestly, so fluid. I owed them an EP about a year and a half ago and most labels would’ve just demanded it by now. The team at QGR knew I needed my time to mature and develop as an artist, so they let me have that. I’m so thankful to have had a team that is so supportive backing me. I think that’s what sets them apart. It’s not about industry politics. It’s not about numbers or money. It’s just about good fucking music.

When we spoke to you about ‘Yours,’ you mentioned the song was a step into a more emotionally driven direction. Has the change in sound been difficult? What’s been inspiring you lately?

Yeah, I expected a lot of pushback when I dropped ‘Yours’ – but it was welcomed more openly than I anticipated. It’s definitely been a difficult journey to get ‘here’. The path was riddled with a lot of self doubt – but I think that’s what really pushed me.

This new music is all coming from a very personal place. I’ve been writing and singing on a lot of newer music too. It feels good to finally write from a place of honesty.

Will we still get some straight up trap bangers from you?

I’ll always make music that has elements of dance music and bass music. That is undeniable.

you can fake it to try and play the game for a while, but that eats you up inside and leaves you feeling empty. Be honest to yourself. Write wholeheartedly. Don’t play in to trends. And most importantly, if you feel it – fuck everyone else.

‘Fever Dream’ is a song about overcoming crippling self-doubt. Can you speak to this in more detail? Do you have any tips for others who are struggling with self-doubt?

I think the big thing I learnt was – you can fake it to try and play the game for a while, but that eats you up inside and leaves you feeling empty. Be honest to yourself. Write wholeheartedly. Don’t play in to trends. And most importantly, if you feel it – fuck everyone else.

You recently tweeted a tip for musicians in which you mentioned “we all have different paths — some involve making ‘mistakes’ and some don’t.” Are there any mistakes that you’ve made as an artist that have had a positive impact on your career or personal outlook?

I think everything feeds into everything. It’s the butterfly effect. ‘Ian Munro’ isn’t just a project someone cooked up, it’s me. Every part of my creative journey has been documented on the way. From the first song I ever wrote, to ‘Fever Dream’. Some of those songs along the way probably aren’t representative of where I’m at today – but I wouldn’t call them mistakes. Because every action has lead me to this point in time.

You had the chance to play some US shows this year. How did they go? What’s your favourite thing about the US?

My favourite part was finally being able to meet all of the amazing people I’ve met online through music. It was such a dream to make it out to the US. I can’t wait to be back for more shows next year!

Huge love to UZ, Quix, QGR and the team at Space Yacht for putting me on!

Talk to us about the mix. Where are you trying to take listeners with this one?

I’m just trying to let you all into my world. This mix is a spectrum of everything I love, with a bunch of stuff from some up and coming artists who are absolutely changing the game.

2019 is when we show you what all this silence has been about.

Quality Goods Records superstar Ian Munro totes a far more impressive list of accomplishments than his humble SoundCloud following of 20,000 suggests. Bursting onto the scene in 2016 releasing his debut EP for QGR, Stay Lit where he first demonstrates his ingenuity in sound design. Shortly thereafter, Munro released noteworthy collaborations with QUIX, Oski, & Yvng Jalapeño, followed by a massive remix for UZ’s ‘Bad Gurlz’, all which continue to unveil the magnitude of his creative dexterity.

Although 2018 has featured fewer releases from the Auckland native than we had hoped, his solo releases ‘Yours’ and ‘Right Now’ provide sound confirmation that the downtime has only furnished the opportunity for the young talent to further enhance his sound, dabbling in a more emotional, synth-heavy style while flaunting the same production complexity we’ve grown to love from him.

Continuing on that ‘uplifting trap’ trend he brings us his latest single, and the capstone for QGR releases for the year ‘Fever Dream,’ which is sure to get you hot and bothered.

A faint buzzing, like the distant hum of a respirator, provides a delicate preamble to a grandiose entrance of drums. Heavenly echoing voices draw you in, speckled with faint snapping and the occasional rumbling of magnificent drums. The cadence of the track hastens, embracing a hopeful guise adorned with confident, ringing snares which unleash an intense melody of raw synths and exquisitely timed breaks.

‘Fever Dream’ symbolizes a further step in the new direction for Munro, revealing a more vulnerable side fueled by the interpersonal struggle and conquer of self-doubt. While the tune shifts away from the rampant energy and sheer chaos of his earlier releases, dazzling intricacies in production continue to shine through, promising 2019 will be the biggest year yet for the budding Kiwi.
