To celebrate their return to the big stage, Monstercat has introduced their first-ever label collaboration which honors the whole event and its major achievements. They call it, Compound 2021. And with Westwood Recordings helping to curate this beautiful lineup, it’s hard to not be totally stoked for what lies within! Artists such as The Funk Hunters, So Sus, Akylla and more have all participated to add to this wonderful movement and vision. All creating individual works of art to add to this incredible achievement. An eight-track body of work, honoring brand new up and comers as well as the veterans. Whatever style you’re into within electronic music, there’s something for everyone!

Monstercat Compound has always been such a special event for me, as it allows us to showcase what the organization is all about in my hometown of Vancouver. The Compilation was created to celebrate the incredible talent that Canada has to offer with our global community. Honoring their first track, ‘Simplicity,’ the creation continues to hold an extra special dose of whimsy and attitude. ‘Complications’ is an everlasting sense of beauty. Putting ill-esha’s soft yet effective vocals, in the beginning, was a wonderful and exciting route to open up this wild ride. Preparing their listeners for what’s to come. While still adding some mind-bending elements in the background to really get you invested. Then with a theatrical style buildup, the energy and eagerness start to rise like powerful waves from the ocean, waiting to strike everything in its path. Then, the chorus hits you as if you were caught in a tornado. Bringing in the spice and bouncy flare, they go nuts within the first drop! From grimy bass leads, to liquid style leads, their energies release such raw creativity. It’ll leave your mouth wide open with shock and awe.

Following the aftershock, ill-esha swoops right back in to calm the rumbling waters of destruction. Blessing us with static-based rhythms, they both added in a quick yet soothing section. Integrating lightning fast percussion and drums to keep the track following. And just when you think it’s all over, they prepare us for their final act. The final drop is a mind-altering calling to their first track from the EP. Incorporating a similar atmosphere from ‘Simplicity,’ they closed out this project on a calming and high note. Nothing but memorable elements and pieces to cherish for the future.

As for K+Lab, his funky arrangements can easily turn your day into a bright one. From synth filled bangers, to some trap and hip hop goodness, he’s very flexible within his craft. Tearing through the industry and bringing a beautiful audience to his table. His work have earned the titles unique and original thanks to his organic feel within rhythm and sound. And together, these two have created a timeless art piece. Something for everyone to enjoy.

‘Simplicity’ is a relaxing and unexpected adventure. Combining their skills, both ill-esha and K+Lab have created something very special. It’s a vibe you won’t expect whatsoever. Hearing ill-esha’s vocals really gave a fantastic introduction to what we’re about to get into. It adds some major grit and attitude to the overall feel of the track. With some synths playing an intense and relaxing melody, it turns into a buildup and drops into something mind-blowing.

Having no expectations, the drops hit hard. Leaving a warm and cooling sensation. As if you were drifting along the highway during the nighttime. What makes this song interesting is the sounds and rhythms they both chose to execute their plan. Having a drum & bass feel, they also managed to fit in some marvelous trap elements to compliment it all. Purely astounding. Adding her harmonies was a great move to keep the song flowing in a peaceful fashion.

And just when you think it’s over, they immediately take us to the second chorus consisting of a mean and nasty distorted bass to completely knock you outta your shoes. Everything about the song sheds a new spectrum over their work. Taking big and new steps within their art to show their evolution as musicians and as people.
