Milwaukee’s best, IshDARR, has been one of the most promising rappers in the game for a minute. Back in 2015 we named him one of the 8 Rappers You Should Be Listening To and over the past two years he’s only gotten better. Cementing this fact comes For The Better, a six cut EP that’s nothing short of flames. With production from Canis Major, ESTA, Omito, MAG, Emani, J Robb and Taylor King, IshDARR showcases his exceptionally evolving talents as an artist.

The project kicks off with the sounds of putting a tape in the deck that instantly evokes waves of nostalgia. The beat behind ‘Ol’ Dirty’ keeps this going as it blends jazzy and emotive feels with solid knock. IshDARR pulls you in from the jump and keeps you captivated. As his first verse fades an incredible instrumental is brought forth delivering waves of feels. This track sets the stage and prepares listeners for something special.

‘Foreplay’ has Ish moving over a super smooth beat as he flexes his swagger in a seductive fashion. ‘FREE’ packs an uplifting punch as IshDARR explores his own direction. With another powerful instrumental interlude ‘FREE’ illustrates the project’s ability to shine for both the bars and the beats. With Soulection vet ESTA on the boards for ‘Mucho Mango’ the two pull together an infectious summer smash that pays homage to the Lil Troy classic ‘Wanna Be A Baller.’ Closing the project out comes two anthematic cuts in ‘LIES’ and ‘Get It Back (Airmax 95)’ which both GO.

IshDARR is everything we love in a rapper in 2017: from dope bars, to catchy hooks, great songs and one hell of an ear for beats…and he’s only getting better. IshDARR is the rapper you need to tell your friends about.

Whenever I write or talk about IshDARR, I can’t help but feel a little like a fake fan. I’ve been saying such over the top things about how talented he is, but a couple months ago I hadn’t even heard his name. With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s move on to the part where I talk about how talented IshDARR is.

IshDARR’s new album, Broken Hearts & Bankrolls, is proof that he deserves a spot on my list of the most slept-on artists of 2016. With only twelve songs, IshDARR demonstrates his technical rapping prowess, his willingness to delve into sensitive topics, and a musicality that you don’t often find in the hip hop industry. He manages to roll all of these things together with an unapologetic blackness, a style that says “this is who I am and people will like it, even if the industry doesn’t.”

I could go on about why IshDARR is so talented, but I promised to give you five reasons to love him. Before I get too carried away with my own descriptions, let’s get into IshDARR’s music. This twelve track album really demonstrates twelve reasons to love the man, but let’s stick to five of my favorite tracks:

1. ‘Yes, You’

This song is a great example of the Notorious B.I.G.’s influence on rap music. A lot of people, including rappers and people who don’t even like rap, complain that rap is all about getting laid or paid, or it’s about clubbing and the high life. That may be true, but we need a little lesson in hip hop history to understand why.

Biggie Smalls was the first rapper to bring decadence into mainstream rap. His music focused largely on storytelling, emphasizing the difference between the life of poverty and crime that he knew with the luxurious surroundings he was suddenly able to afford.

Unfortunately, most rappers decided to imitate Biggie’s love of the finer things in life while ignoring the significance of achieving those things when you come from a life of poverty. But IshDARR is different. IshDARR talks about the high life and all the luxuries he can afford, but he remembers to touch on the perseverance that got him there and the sacrifices he made along the way. This is clear throughout ‘Yes, You,’ especially in the first verse:

All my pride
I might choose to put aside
Always worth the while
Dreams of moving out
Condo super-size
Others you ignore
You say fuck them guys,
Probably movin’ on road now
I-95 super zoned out
Want an Atari Ferrari
And a boathouse
They ain’t on it
Girl I know

This song, and this verse in particular, is an example of a common theme in IshDARR’s music: I want that high life, but I’ll never get everything I want unless I keep working. In other words, I’ll never have it all as long as I keep slacking off and enjoying what I’ve got.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/286586033″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

2. ‘Side Weighs’

This might be my favorite track on the whole album. ‘Side Weighs’ is actually one of my top songs of 2016, easily. Like most of Broken Hearts & Bankrolls, this song is about staying focused on creating music rather than partying. What really sets the song apart, however, is how far IshDARR takes it. He discusses how the industry, as well as most rap listeners, doesn’t want conscious rap with lines like:

So tell me why your fans twisted
I’m pit stoppin’, told that girl I’m day trippin
Havin’ battles with my inner
Hopin’ that I don’t get ig’nant
Up in SoHo with my niggas
Rockin Polo for the image
Too wild n too young
Posted up with two huns
We don’t bite, nor bother
Inhale it for my lungs
Never runnin’ out of options
Why I always save one
Every time you talkin’ conscious
You know they gone play dumb

IshDARR is basically saying “conscious rap doesn’t need to sound like conscious rap.” He’s saying that he can cover very real topics, he can deal with social issues and bare his soul, without sounding as preachy as other conscious rappers. He proves this throughout the song.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/286586044″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

3. ‘Dumb Playing’

Like most of the album, this song focuses on IshDARR’s unwavering focus. Specifically, this is a track about how IshDARR walked away from what others call “success” in order to chase his dream of being a rapper. Though there’s obviously some significance in the lyrics, this song is really about IshDARR taking a few minutes to show off his technical prowess. The song is basically one long verse, followed by a hook. You can’t fully appreciate the significance of what IshDARR accomplishes here without listening to it, but I’ve copied my favorite part below:

Platinum medals like I’m back in O state
Life accomplishments I’m lookin’ at my dad’s face
Jim Tressel knew that I was special in my younger days
Switched my career and told my moma I’m gon’ innovate

This song has a special place in my heart, and I think it should resonate with most Americans as well. There aren’t many people who know from childhood what they want to do with their lives. Most of us go through a point where we at least ask “is this really what I want to do? Is this who I want to be?” Not many people have the guts to admit they’re on the wrong path and chase their dreams instead. IshDARR is speaking to everyone who feels they’ve made a mistake in their personal or professional lives. He’s telling us it’s okay to switch things up and follow our dreams. What’s the point of living if you don’t like your life? Check ‘Dumb Playing’ out below if you need a reason to live.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/286586055″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

4. ‘Mistakes’

I’ve already mentioned how IshDARR reminds me of Biggie. ‘Mistakes’ reminds me of Tupac. A common theme in Tupac’s music was this idea that young black men who find themselves caught up in lives of crime didn’t choose to live that way; rather, established power structures more or less force them into certain roles. The hook in ‘Mistakes’ gives us IshDARR’s thoughts on the topic:

‘Cause life gon’ throw some shit your way
Some things you just can’t handle
Negativity is the root of evil
So we learn how to channel
Maybe just a mistake, just a mistake
Feel like I’m caught up in a maze
I’m in a daze
But I’m gon’ do it anyways
Yeah anyways.”

There’s a double-meaning here that I think was intentional, especially considering the content of the verses. The rest of the song is, broadly speaking, about committing crimes. On the one hand, the hook can be interpreted as “when we do negative things, we’re just channeling the environment we’re trapped in.” The second interpretation seems much more closely linked to IshDARR himself: “we channel the negativity around us into our art and music.”

IshDARR plays with the whole concept of dual-meanings throughout the song. He ends the first verse with “quick reminisce when I was choosing Kool-Aid flavors.” This line is clearly a reference to Kool-Aid, which every person who had a childhood can relate to. But more importantly, it’s a reference to his own blackness (Kool-Aid is a stereotypically black beverage), as well as a reference to joining in or being a follower (“drinking the Kool-Aid” is slang for blind adherence to a belief, derived from the Jonestown Massacre).

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/286587404″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

5. ‘Breaking Hearts’

This song is, by and large, just an excuse for IshDARR to flex his lyrical muscles. I am 100% okay with that. He spends a good portion of the song doing the whole battle rap thing and talking about how great he is, but what makes this song really incredible is how IshDARR effortlessly blends references in with his rhyme scheme. For anyone reading this who has never written a rap before, just know that it is INCREDIBLY impressive. It’s easy to fit a fun reference or insightful comment into a simple rhyme scheme, but this song is structurally impressive. That technical or structural impressiveness makes little references, like this potential Kendrick reference, so much more impressive:

Hold my tongue might be some truth to that
Told you I’m so used to that
Prudent stupid who is
You is
I’m rollin’ like four in fact
Lungs blacker than my heart
Black the berry sweet the juice
Ya innocence my ignorance
The only part you say is true

Whether IshDARR intended to reference Kendrick’s ‘Blacker the Berry’ or he was merely referencing the old saying “the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice,” the reference is inspiring in such a complex rhyme scheme. I specifically used the word “inspiring” because I think IshDARR sets a new standard for rappers. It seems like all of the most impressive rappers focus on lyrical content or lyrical structure, and anyone who tries too hard to be impressive in both regards ends up mediocre at best. Immortal Technique is one of the best storytellers in the rap game, but structurally his songs are pretty simple; R.A. the Rugged Man is one of the most technically impressive rappers alive right now, but he tends to forgo stories and messages in favor of breathtaking lyrical structures. Without naming any names, a lot of mainstream rappers try to sound impressive while delivering a message, and they end up failing in both regards. IshDARR has shown us that it’s possible and that even a young rapper with relatively little experience can accomplish it. He’s show us that we can, and should, expect more from the hip hop industry.

I’ve made some pretty strong claims in this piece. Do you agree? Disagree? Tell us in the comments why I’m right or why I’m wrong! Be sure to bump the whole project below.

IshDARR‘s second album, Broken Hearts & Bankrolls, is expected to drop on Friday, and the man dropped two tracks over the past week to hype it. Before we get into ‘Bad Four You,’ which will be on the new album, let’s talk a little bit about ‘NINEFIFTIES.’

‘NINEFIFTIES’ is IshDARR’s take on the Weeknd’s ‘Starboy.’ I would normally argue that the real fun of a rapper putting a twist on a popular song comes from the familiarity with the song. Take, for example, Childish Gambino’s ‘R.I.P.,’ a song that heavily samples Kavinsky’s ‘Nightcall.’ ‘R.I.P.’ is a great song because it pays homage to ‘Nightcall.’ ‘NINEFIFTIES’ is totally different. It sounds more like IshDARR’s made it his own than like he’s playing with someone else’s music. It just doesn’t feel like the Weeknd once IshDARR gets his hands on it. That said, IshDARR remembers to acknowledge the song’s source material with lines like:

I peep that
I ease back
Mothafuckin’ star boy
Momma I mean that,
Mothafuckin’ DARR boy
Beamer I clean that
Don’t say it in ya song
If you don’t really mean that

Check ‘NINEFIFTIES’ out below.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/286099203″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Now let’s move on to the main event: ‘Bad Four You.’ This might just be my favorite IshDARR track so far. IshDARR talks about recognizing all the people and things that slow him down or distract him from pursuing his art. In doing so, he talks about the importance of recognizing what is “bad four you,” what gets in the way of your own personal growth, and making sure you don’t get caught up in those things. The second verse is my favorite part of the song:

Don’t call when you want me told you don’t get comfortable
‘Cause I never feel it no I never feel it but you’ll end up hurtin’
I’m out the country with no service way too determined
You was poppin’ percs when I’m behind the curtain
Every day is news swear to god I’m learnin’
You gone’ get the boot if you don’t got a purpose

IshDARR’s lyrical style and word choice is unarguably hip hop, but the message here applies to everyone. We can all learn a thing or two from this song. Regardless of who you are, what you do, or what your dreams are, there will always be temptations. We all have habits that get in the way of our dreams. IshDARR’s here to remind us all that he has the same bad habits, the same temptations, and that we can all overcome them just like he did. It’s also worth mentioning that IshDARR isn’t condemning the “bad habits” outright: he’s not saying there’s anything wrong with “poppin’ percs,” but rather that you’re not going to make it to the top of anything if you’re too busy enjoying yourself.

Stay tuned for an update on IshDARR’s new album, Broken Hearts & Bankrolls, after it drops tomorrow. Until then, bump this.

I have a confession to make. I never really looked into IshDARR until I heard his new song, ‘Locals.’ If you haven’t given him a chance yet, stop wasting your life and turn this up now.

I think we can all agree that there are a number of different ways in which a rap song can be good, or even great. Sometimes an artist wows you with their metaphors, wordplay, or references. Sometimes an artist blows you away with raw emotion or insights about serious issues. But there are some artists who focus on lyrical structure above all else. IshDARR falls into this final category. ‘Locals’ is more than a song: it’s a lyrical sculpture. IshDARR spits a complicated rhyme scheme over a smooth beat with the kind of ease that you’d only expect from some of the most talented veterans in the hip hop industry. Perhaps the most impressive lyrical section of the song comes in the first verse: “if we caught / sorry clears my mind / the herb is OG only / keep ya pine / frosty as a goalie / keep that dry shit / doming blunts or doobies / all the time shit / we can get lost in a cloud, / mothahfuckin lost in a cloud.”

This song will get you just as lifted as the weed IshDARR’s rapping about. If you’re looking for a song about social issues of emotional experiences, ‘Locals’ isn’t it. But if you’re looking for some of the most fun, aesthetically pleasing hip hop of 2016, look no further. ‘Locals’ is weed for your ears. One might even call it earbud. Yes, I’m ending this review with a pun. If that seems wrong to you, you clearly haven’t listened to the song yet.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/283189850″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

As 2015 wraps up, it’s time to reflect on another incredible year in music. To do so, we’re counting down the top 100 songs of the year. In developing this list we weighed each track against the following criteria: overall song quality, impact and popularity, and support (blogs, charts, DJs, etc.). We’re counting down 20 tracks per day and today we bring you 60-41. If you dig our selections be sure to share. If you disagree with some of the picks let us know why in the comments below. Without further adieu we present our picks for the top 100 tracks of 2015.

60. Travi$ Scott – Skyfall (RL Grime & Salva)

Travis had already created a dark and deep sound with the original but RL Grime and Salva tweaked the shit out of this slow banger and took it for a flight through the sky. Speeding things up a couple notches, slapping new drums all over the track and restructuring the vocals, Grime and Salva’s combined trap production chops are unreal and you can imagine they flipped this La Flame single on its head.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/193202172″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

59. Bryson Tiller – Let Em Know (J-Louis Remix)

Bryson Tiller’s ‘Let Em Know’ is one of his best efforts vocally and lyrical but the production left you wanting more. Enter J-Louis, the Soulection beatsmith who decided to put his own spin on the tune, reworking it into perfection. The keys add a deeper level of emotion while the the hard hitting bass and 808’s make the chorus feel twice as strong. Now this is Trapsoul.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/214607639″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

58. Slumberjack – Enigma feat. GRRL PAL

‘Enigma’ is everything that makes Slumberjack so special. It demonstrates their ability to blend genres and world influences while showcasing their mastery of juxtaposition. In less than 4 minutes it manages to be an infectious poppy tune, a gorgeous piece of future bass and the ugliest trap record you’ve heard in a minute. Somehow it accomplishes all of this without ever feeling disconjointed. This track is an impressive achievement in production even for Slumberjack.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/234221914″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

57. Falcons – Boss Mackin’ feat. A1

The hottest tracks off Falcon’s Terra EP, ‘Boss Mackin’ wasn’t the biggest party anthem of 2015 but it should’ve been. Falcons laces the beat with his signature heavy bass and snapping drums while A1 gives a tutorial on how to skate over a beat. The way the bars fit over the beat sounds like they were woven together tighter than a pair of flyknits. This might be the hottest Bay area anthem since e40 and Short Dogg were poppin’.

56. Sable x Promnite – OMG

The highly anticipated collaborative effort from Sable and Promnite more than lived up to the hype. ‘OMG’ had you saying just what the title issued. Taking familiar and nostalgic vocals and chopping and pitching them over one of the hardest beats of the year is guaranteed success. It wasn’t just the hard hitting sound that made it stand out, melodic breaks and anxious builds rounded it perfectly.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/193874123″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

55. Boombox Cartel – B2U (feat. Ian Everson)

With vocals from Ian Everson ‘B2U’ helped Boombox Cartel explode onto the scene. It’s a stellar combination of catchy vocals, stunning future bass and absolutely filthy trap. The progression and movement of the track is incredible and deserves to be applauded. It was that bomb at the beginning of 2015 that had you asking “what the fuck is this!?” in your favourite DJs sets.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/191606087″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

54. Drake – Energy

Is this even contentious? Drake’s all over this list – how could he not be? TheToronto native blessed fans with a slew of new joints stemming from both of his mixtapes that dropped this year. Drake’s aggressive approach and Boi-1da’s dangerous production on ‘Energy’ make this an easy pick for song 54 out of this years top 100 songs. And let’s not count out the opening that everyone yells as soon as the track hits (“lick wood means rewind, the gunshot means forward, you requested it so we rewind”), which pays homage to the sound clash era.

53. Sam Gellaitry – Long Distance

Sam Gellaitry has proven himself to be a rising star in the music game with an arsenal of hits in his catalogue. ‘Long Distance’ is no exception – in fact it’s one his best tracks yet. The short but sweet banger combines a deep reggae vocal sample and a build that will have you wondering how hard the drop will be. And when it drops? – you can forget about standing still. The horns, in perfect harmony with an excellent drum arrangement and a perfect combination of low and high pitched vocal chops make for a banger that solidifies Sam’s hold on the 53rd spot – and as a talent to watch out for in 2016.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/216487635″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

52. THEY. – Motley Crue

The newest Mind Of Genius signees THEY. came out of nowhere with an impressive offering in NÜ Religion. They’re sound is a hyrbid of genres that encompasses everything from hip-hop and RnB to trap and rock. ‘Motely Crue’ perfectly embodies this, showcasing their singing, rapping and production abilities. The raps are delivered with passion, the hook does just that (hooks you), and the beat is a rock inspired burner that shifts from low key to banging to punctuate the emotion of the vocals. THEY. dropped an anthem.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/228236440″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

51. Grandtheft & Sleepy Tom – Hold On

Grandtheft has always been renowned for his diverse sets and production skills but his Quit This City EP elevated this to a new level. The lead single ‘Hold On’ saw him connecting with Sleepy Tom for track that is both futuristic and nostalgic. Elements of it sound like they came out of an 80’s computer, while the forward thinking club sound gives it 2015 vibe. It’s this balance of old and new and the strong feeling of emotion that made this one something unforgettable.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/218677749″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

50. Big Sean – Sanctified (Mr. Carmack Remix)

Carmack’s remix of Big Sean’s ‘Sanctified’ brings some much needed energy to the track, driving it forward with a bass heavy beat while still remaining true to the original. Carmack’s sense for movement and progression throughout a track is made obvious when comparing the two tracks. This remix is for anyone who enjoys a helping of rap with their main course of production, as opposed to the original which was more lyrically driven and featured a fairly minimal stripped-down beat.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/213959446″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

49. Electric Mantis – Pixel Wave

Braincase was undoubtedly one of the most adventurous and interesting EPs of the year. The project’s opener ‘Pixel Wave’ showcases everything that made it so special. It’s a collection of obscure sounds and samples that somehow come together to create magic. It packs a transportational property so strong that it takes you into a different world. A world of infinite sunshine, rolling waves, stunning waterfalls and a slight feeling of melancholy. It’s abstract and powerful and beautifully unique.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/208990699″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

48. TWRK – Helicopter

The lead single of off the twerk gods debut EP We Are TWRK, ‘Helicopter’ is everything we love from Benzi and eSentrik. Massive horns, bouncy bass and one of the most recognizable vocals chops of 2015 made this a certified festival anthem. Add in remixes from DJ Sliink, STFU, Snappy Jit, Victor Niglio and Bad Royale and it only got that much bigger.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/201863704″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

47. A$AP Rocky – L$D

The third single off 2015’s At.Long.Last.A$AP hits a three-pointer for Rocky-of-the-A$AP-Mob and cements a milestone on his path of artist, rapper, and fashionista.

One point goes to the music style – It’s a markedly different sound than the world was used to from Rocky (think: ‘Wild For The Night’, ‘F**kn’ Problems’ ). It’s a dreamy, introspective, and even romantic spin on hip-hop.

Another point goes to the track’s Grammy-nominated video – the collab with director Dexter Navy is an impeccable translation of the song’s psychedelic aesthetic into a mind-boggling visual experience. Obviously inspired by Gaspar Noe’s Enter The Void, it’s at once experimental, candy-sweet, and immersive.

Third point goes to the marketing tactics surrounding the release; pimping from Lil B The Based God primed the premiere of the song and video, while the video itself spliced in a verse from another track from the same album. This clever cross-promotion, along with a fresh musical style and over-the-top video makes this one of the best tracks of the year.

46. Lido – Here

Lido’s flip of mega hit ‘Here’ began as an outlet to vent his frustration after having his SoundCloud account frozen, but it became so much more. It’s a commentary on the entire industry and most importantly serves as a no holds barred call out of archaic major labels, “And I can’t wait to get the fuck up out this, plaqued out office, wish this thing was over, tryna keep my damn composure, cause he thinks in full disclosure, that I’m latchin’ on to records he commissioned, had to show him what was missin’, a composer on a mission, yeah it’s weird, now every copycat’s a legend, if he knows ’bout major 7ths, while I’m sittin’ on some blessings I can’t share, because this bald and rich executive, don’t understand his record isn’t suffering from a flip I did, he scared.” This track is the voice for every SoundCloud producer and fan who’s tired of labels who don’t understand the value of remixes. Major props to Lido for speaking the truth, all while adding in some clever wordplay and retooled production. The fact he did this on top of the most streamed song of 2015 is the cherry on top. The fact that it hasn’t been taken down is even more impressive.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/232881532″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

45. The Game & Skrillex – El Chapo

It seems like if you’re going to make a comeback, connecting with Skrillex is a given (see Justin Beiber). The Game decided to do just that, linking up with Skrillex and Bangladesh for the coke anthem ‘El Chapo’. Unsurprisingly the beat is pure insanity; combining massive horns with hard hitting and drums and some signature wubs from Skrillex. Game comes out spitting his fiercest in years with violent bars that include “knocking Donald Trump out his toupée”. How can you not enjoy that? This track is more turnt up than Ric Flair off 20 lines. Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo!

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/227664065″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

44. NGHTMRE – Street

After poppping up in Skrillex’s Ultra set ‘Street’ became one of the most sought after ID’s of 2015. Every major DJ supported and every fan lost it when it dropped. It’s menacing, forward thinking, and absolutely devastating. It’s exactly the type of track that is keeping the trap genre alive and well. NGHTMRE had a massive 2015 and this anchored it.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/214682316″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

43. Herobust – Skurt Reynolds

Like Skurt! This year saw Herobust exploring the widest range of sound design in his career. There’s a few of his tracks that could’ve landed themselves on the list but none managed to pack the grittiness and infectiousness of ‘Skurt Reynolds’. It’s hard not to like it from the name alone, but the music is undeniable. It’s the musical equivalent of bending a 70’s muscle car around corner at 50mph, clipping the curb and still plowing ahead. It’s almost of control but so enthralling.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/205295734″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

42. Post Malone – White Iverson

We covered this track back when it dropped and had a feeling it would eventually take reign as one of the hottest tracks of 2015, we’re not really into bragging – but we were right. The swagged out and turnt up artist (don’t call him a rapper, he doesn’t like that) Post Malone emerged from the Internet and really caught fire with ‘White Iverson’. The track was responsible for reminding everyone how great of a basketball player Allen Iverson was, but also for making “saucing” a term accepted everywhere. But seriously, not even kidding in the slightest, Malone’s commanding tone over a low key beat made for a great song in 2015.

41. IshDARR – Remember

In a time where rap records are often formulaic and overly simplified, IshDARR connected with Film Noir production wiz Krs. and Arthur McArthur to craft something distinctly unique. The soulful backdrop is dreamlike; perfectly pairing delicate piano with hard hitting drums. IshDARR blends storytelling, humour and swagger while switching from rap bars and singing. What makes the track standout is the way the lyrics and production complement one and other. The lyrics are perfectly punctuated by the beat changes and samples that reinforce vocals. This is what quality hip-hop sounds like in 2015.

With so many rappers claiming their mixtape is fire, how do you know who’s really got that heat and who’s warm as a refrigerator? Thankfully the homies here at FUXWITHIT have you covered. We’ve put together a list of the top 8 rappers you need to be listening to right now.

Goldlink

In the past few years the DMV native has been blowing up the internet, getting love from DJs, every major blog and landing on the radar of XXL and Hot 97. His debut project The God Complex proved he was here to stay, but it’s his most recent works that have really impressed. From his Songs From Scratch collab with Chet Porter to his work with Falcons (‘Aquafina’, ‘Vroom’) and the huge single ‘Dance On Me’, Goldlink is proving to be one of the hottest rappers of the year. He’s also the only rapper to work with ZHU…so there’s that too.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/209412469″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/144765705″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

IshDARR

When you think about hip-hop, Milwaukee might be the last city that comes to mind, but with IshDARR leading the charge, that’s guaranteed to change. His most recent project Old Soul, Young Spirit is the perfect description of his sound. The 18 year old naturally embodies elements of the golden era of hip-hop with a new school swag. He’s just as at home rhyming over soulful beats as he is going in on trap or even future bass (‘Sugar’).
Sylvan LaCue (QuESt)

Former Visionary Music Group artist and Miami native, QuESt, has been struggling to find his way in the game for years. After some initial success and hype he released several mixtapes that just didn’t quite hit. Finally last year QuESt found his place dropping Searching Sylvan. Not only was it one of the best releases of last year, it’s one of the best concept albums of the past decade. The storytelling, narratives and individual tracks can be compared alongside Kendrick Lamar’s debut Good Kid, m.A.A.d City and classics from Masta Ace and Prince Paul. The release signified a huge turning point in QuESt’s career creating a slew of rumours around his placement on the esteemed XXL freshman list in 2014. Though he didn’t make the final cut, his skills are undeniably above many of the selections, leading us to believe XXL needs to #WiseUp. After taking some time off, partying in LA and then soul searching, Sylvan’s search came to a conclusion with him finding himself again. He recently announced that he would be dropping his QuESt moniker and be known by his real name Sylvan LaCue. With the recently announced follow-up project Far From Familiar on the way soon, Sylvan is in the position to prove that he truly is next up.

When Droog put out his self titled debut EP it wasn’t long before conspiracy theorists began having a field day. They almost had the internet convinced that Droog wasn’t a new emcee but rather a side project of the legendary nasty Nas. After letting it ride for a minute to build hype, Droog stepped out of the shadows and displayed himself as the Brooklyn MC we’ve come to love. A true embodiment of the golden era of rap; Droog gets down over minimalistic, boom bap beats, letting his razor sharp punchlines and incredible wordplay take centre stage. One listen to ‘Nutty Bars’ and you’ll see why it’s one of the best displays of wordplay since GZA’s ‘Labels’. Keeping the momentum rolling in 2015, YOD gave fans two of the finest rap EPs of 2015 in Kenison and The Nicest. Adding to his persona as a no-nonsense real emcee, Droog has been bodying radio shows and live performances with the air of a seasoned vet. If you listen to rap for the bars, Droog will have you hitting rewind for days.

Cozz

If you haven’t heard Cozz, you’ve been sleeping – for real. The L.A. native who signed to J.Cole’s Dreamville imprint in 2014 dropped his debut album Cozz & Effect and it is one of the best albums of 2014. The west coast kid has been touring with Cole and the rest of the Dreamvillains in an effort to reach a larger audience but capturing new fans shouldn’t be too difficult. Upon first listen of the album it’s clear that Cozz has a story tell and the up-and-comer is hungry. His voice inflection has depth and the emotion in his delivery shines through on every track. Cozz also doesn’t have a “classic” west coast sound, rather the beats sound very east coast but the subject matter and swagger is clearly Inglewood inspired. Of the 12 track album there are none that are skip worthy and at least half are repeat worthy. Listen to Cozz and thank us later.

P.Keys

DC based rapper P.Keys first clocked onto our radar when he flipped Kaytranada’s ‘Not To Play With’. Keys didn’t waste anytime following up the release of flips of Troyboi and Mr. Carmack, both of which were supported by the original artists. The flips developed a strong fan base that perfectly lead to his debut EP Nobody. The project shows his range, with him going in over a variety of sounds with everything from emotionally driven downtempo rap to upbeat future bass. His biggest release to date is the G-house collab he did with Zeier ‘Shuffle On’. The anthem has been getting support from everyone from Valentino Khan to Dr Fresch and more. When it comes to fusing hip hop and electronic sounds, P.Keys is one of the best out.

Working with producers Durkin and Victor Radz, Black EL created a new sound dubbed “Space Wave”. The combination of vibey, bass heavy beats and smoothed out flows go together like gin and juice. His lyrical abilities are nothing to lookover with his skills ranging from personal storytelling, to witty punchlines and thought provoking bars. Each track is a trip into his psyche and with one spin of L_ST he’ll feel like a close friend. Whether you’re riding in the whip or cooling out on a Summer’s day, Black EL is the perfect theme music.

Lil Dicky

Listening to David Burd rap under his pseudonym is really the only obstacle here. With a name like Lil Dicky it’s hard to press play and take the music seriously – but that’s all part of the plan. The Chelthenham rapper has taken the Internet by storm with a handful of comedy themed tracks all accompanied by equally hilarious videos. We wrote a little bit about Dicky when his album dropped and one thing is certain, Lil Dicky is dope. His story is not that of someone who was trapping out the bando or moving weight up and down the interstate. Rather, Dicky’s story is similar to that of someone living in a middle class household, who went on to college, got a job and decided to just say ‘fuck it, I’m going to live my dream’. Though his subject matter is comedic, his skill is undeniable. Dicky is capable of putting rhymes together with a smooth and fast paced flow and the bars aren’t weak. This University of Richmond alumni put together a solid debut effort and if you aren’t listening now, you should.
