Grandtheft Expands His Sound on ‘Quit This City’ EP

Grandtheft has always been highly regarded for his versatility and creativity as a DJ and producer. With the release of his debut EP, Quit This City, the Toronto based producer takes that to new heights. In just 6 tracks, Grandtheft explores a multitude of genres and diverse sounds, often within the same song. The project opens with ‘All The Way Up,’ a collaborative effort with vocalist Lia Ices and production duo Brasstracks. The track blends cold vocals with smooth jazz influenced breaks and slammin drops. Next up, ‘So Wavey’ sees the producer connecting with Jesse Slayter for a computerized future bass tune that is just what the title ensues. The lead single ‘Hold On’ is a concoction of glithy synths, gripping vocal and a club inspired back bone. The most surprising cut off the EP is ‘Politics,’ a straight reggae jam with Kabaka Pyramid. As the project near it’s conclusion things begin to wind down. The title track is a cross between an 80’s ballad and a future trap hybrid that’s rich in emotion. It sounds ill fitting on paper but it’s seamless and touching. ‘Summer In The Winter’ wraps things up nicely with an indie electronic sound punctuated by snapping drums and mellowed with hazy vocals. Considering the wide array of sounds explored ‘Quit This City’ is surprisingly cohesive. It’s not what you expect from Grandtheft, but that’s what makes it so impressive. Dougie F and DJ Fire’s ‘Back Up On It’ was one of biggest jersey club tracks of 2014, landing itself #28 in our top 50 songs of the year countdown. Since its release there have been a few stellar unreleased remixes floating about. Today Mad Decent dropped the official remix EP which features eSenTRIK, Mark Johns, Samisoni, Vices, and Jesse Slayter. Each rework takes the track into a new direction ranging from bouncy house, gritty club and futuristic feels. It’s Friday and it’s finally starting to feel like Spring may be on its way. Fittingly we’ve got a feature that combines fresh bangers with some warm weather vibes. We kick things off with the hard hitting anthem ‘MFU’ from Flossrtadamus & Valentino Khan. Next up we have a unique banger from Whispa and some fire from TroyBoi. Concordia Music sets a summery vibe that carries through with a ‘Trap Queen’ flip from Jesse Slayter, a jet life remix from Viceroy and a smooth groove from Durkin.
