Following up Masego‘s 2020 highly acclaimed Studying Abroad: Extended Stay album, comes his newest release, ‘Garden Party.’ For this new single, the artist enlists the help of two Atlanta legends, Outkast’s Big Boi and JID.

‘Cause it look like stomp like the yard in the garden
Battle of the bands, we starting
Here all night, they won’t leave
We all vibe and we sing, like

masego, ‘garden party’

In true Masego fashion, ‘Garden Party’ is sultry as fuck. The musician plays his saxophone throughout, giving a soulful feel to balance the beat’s hard drums. Masego, JID, and Big Boi each take turns spitting bars between the chorus, piggybacking off of each other to create a true party vibe. JID’s verse is the song’s leading light for me, stringing his words together so effortlessly, almost giving me a buzz by just listening. But of course, Big Boi brought up the heat, going hard (pun intended) over the sexy melody.

While turn-up tracks aren’t new, ‘Garden Party’ brings a fresh spin that makes you want to dress up and get crazy at the closest kickback.

We haven’t forgotten that this month is Black History Month. After a year of self-reflection, non-Black folks are finally able to be educated as well as educate ourselves on the harsh truths of racism. Here at FUXWITHIT, we’re really thankful that so many artists took time this month to relay their personal experiences through their art. And we can only hope to take this knowledge, apply and acknowledge it in our daily lives, and take steps to improve as a society. On February 22, JID took time to recount his struggles of being black in America through in his new song, ‘Skegee.’

No matter how much I say it, they ain’t hearin’ my voice
‘Cause as long as them crackers payin’, you ain’t much of a choice
And you can shoot a million Js, you’ll prolly never be Jordan
N**** ran for a million yards, you still forty acres short

JID, ‘Skegee’

Before dropping the track, he went on Instagram to say, “Dear everyone who fuck wit my music, Thank y’all for your patience while I finish up my album and shit. We all know black history is every month but I wanted to drop something to highlight this month specifically.”

‘Skegee’ is short for Tuskegee, a city in Alabama and a Historical Black College (HBCU) that JID was recruited for. He starts off all three verses of the track as well as opens the music video referencing a 1942 poem by Edgar A. Guest and raps, “Take a chance, have faith, my lad/ You got all of the same tools all the greats have had/ Two eyes, two ears, one mouth, two hands.” While the poem is meant to uplift people, what it fails to realize is that equality does not equal equity. The disenfranchisement and systemic racism of Black people in America puts them at a disadvantage to everyone, regardless of the tools that are “available” to everyone. JID goes into detail and gives insight on what life as a Black man has been like for him.

From hands that tied ropes on necks in red states
Another dead black-ass man, I need a damn break
They never gave us a chance, I had to take it
I need all the payments, for every day we suffered all the hatred
I want my granny to shoot the hands with Nancy Reagan
I want emancipation

JID, ‘Skegee’

JID masterfully alludes to prominent Black historical figures, activists, and artists in the track. Even if you dissect every sentence, with each listen, you’ll find something new. The song is as powerful and poignant as it is heavy and heartbreaking. But the truth stands: Black History in America isn’t only about “having a dream” of unity. It’s all the disgusting things Black people have gone through and are still going through to this day. It’s absolutely worth the listen and watch. Stream JID’s ‘Skegee’ and find the video below for yourself.

Four years after the first release of ‘Bruuuh,’ JID enlists Denzel Curry for the track’s remix. 2020 was a huge year for both of the rappers. JID released Spilligion with his collective, Spillage Village, and Denzel dropped UNLOCKED with Kenny Beats. So we were hype to see these two reunite for the ‘Bruuuh’ remix.

The last time the artists were seen on a track together was back in 2018 with ‘SIRENS | Z1RENZ,’ Curry’s melodic narrative on the state of America. But it seems they’ve stayed close ever since. The ‘Bruuuh’ Remix has actually been in the works for quite a while. In March of last year, JID posted a picture of the two on Instagram with the caption “This n**** Denzel one of the most genuine people I ever met… (I should prolly drop Bruuuh Remix huh?)”

Both of them have been in the rap game for a minute, and don’t hesitate to flex their place at the top in ‘Bruuuh.’ JID starts off the song hard with, “The maddest, blackest lad in a savage land/ Of grab and dash and crash in your daddy’s van/ D-D-D, d-d, bad as the most having-est/ Most swaggiest, braggy as never had anything/ So I’m mackin’ as if I never had shit.” Denzel then adds his impeccable flow to the beat, spitting, “So many y’alls/ I’m bored, there’s too many yawns/ I got a lot of green, it’s too many lawns/ I’m still hot ’til I set in the dawn, until a n**** rockin’ Saint Laurent.”

And we have to agree with Denzel when he says, “We go together like Harry and Ron.” When the two team up, it’s always fucking magic. Check out JID and Denzel Curry on the ‘Bruuuh’ (Remix) below.

IDK, JID & Kenny Mason are three of the illest rappers out right now. To see them all come together on one track is nothing short of murderous. The aptly titled ‘Cereal’ sees the trio trading bars over a slapping and hypnotic trap beat produced by DJ Scheme, Christo & Jay Card.

JID kicks things off with a gritty hook that’s ripe with fire wordplay. After a short verse, Atlanta’s newest rising star Kenny Mason commands our attention with, “Ran outta milk, mixed some water with cereal/Ran with the killers and most of ’em serial/Run up on dealer, go di-di-di-digital/No face to pin it on, no Rey Mysterio,” as the beat is pulled back. Tongue twisting raps follow suit as the beat drops back in amping up the energy. As IDK makes his presence known, the backing changes once more, providing a spiritual foundation for his opening before getting back to the familiar knock. With bulletproof bars like, “I’m milkin’ the game, every bar is a titty/I fuck up the system, I work it like Missy/Your money is iffy, your peoples is filthy/You takin’ them shots but they all seem to miss me,” IDK proves he’s not to be outshined. Bump this on repeat below.

The wait is finally over…Revenge Of The Dreamers III is here and it’s massive!

To kick off 2019 J. Cole and the Dreamville team opted to invite some of their favourite rappers, singers and producers to a 10 day collaborative session in Atlanta. With some of the hottest in the game posting on their socials and Dreamville teasing clips, the hype could not be higher. On Tuesday Dreamville Presents: REVENGE (Documentary) took fans into the sessions and further increased the excitement around the release of the Dreamville compilation Revenge Of The Dreamers III. Today the album has arrived and it did not disappoint.

Clocking in at 18 tracks, the project showcases the power of collaboration while breaking down barriers in rap, both geographical and generational. The Dreamville roster is at the project’s core with J. Cole, JID, Cozz, Bas, EARTHGANG sprinkled across a variety of tracks. Outside of the expected, ROTD3 sees features ranging from DaBaby and Smokepurpp, to Buddy and Guapdad 4000, Saba and Smino, to Vince Staples and T.I. Early standouts include ‘Down Bad,’ ‘LamboTruck,’ ‘1993,’ ‘Rembrandt…Run It Back,’ and ‘Sleep Deprived’.

Boogie is fed up. Leading off his debut album with the single ‘Soho,’ Boogie lays into people who invite him out for 30 minute dinner meetings that take an hour to get to (LA traffic if you’ve never experienced it, is one of the 8th wonders of the world but not in a good way). Coming in on the hook Boogie raps, “please no more meetings at Soho, please no more thinking we bro bros, I ain’t been seen in like oh, no, I ain’t been seen in like oh,” referring to South Hollywood.

‘Soho’ serves as an airing of grievances and public service announcement for Boogie. He’s moving low-key, doing his thing and he’s not here for forced and fake friendships. Content wise the song reminds me a lot of Kanye’s ‘No More Parties in LA’ and a little bit of DJ Khaled’s ‘No New Friends.’

For the second verse Boogie taps Dreamville’s JID who brings out his own list of grievances detailing that he ain’t meeting you for dinner, he ain’t your friend and if you don’t watch it, he’s gonna snap this year. Boogie and JID are both young greats in the making, rappers who are still lyrical and technical in an era of declining vocabularies and questionable flows and the pairing works especially well over James Teej’s simple and effective production, featuring a sparse drum/percussion arrangement, and some lo-fi vocal samples in the background before an abrupt beat switch for the outro moves to a brooding rhodes and bass arrangement where Boogie broods about dead and locked up friends; “I seen my bros get turned to corpse, I’m forced to see em using force and they’re still free in court,” as well as the age old subject of relationship problems and fake friends refusing to back him up and stand up for him.

Overall ‘Soho’ is an excellent lead off for Boogie and his debut album Everything’s for Sale (available now on Shady/Interscope) is a bright re-introduction to Boogie as a rapper and definitely worth a listen.
