“I can take 5 years off cause my shit is timeless, my core got my back so I’m staying on promise” – Joey Bada$$

Five years removed from the powerful ALL AMERICAN BADA$$, Joey Bada$$ is finally back with a new album. A decade after his breakout debut mixtape 1999 comes the sequel 2000. The project picks up where his mixtape left off possessing that classic New York rap sound while showcasing the maturity of a veteran with ten years in the game. Diddy, Westside Gunn, JID and more come through for features but it’s Joey’s smooth flow and sharp bars that steal the show. 2000 looks to cement Joey Bada$$’ status as one the greats and off first listen it’s a great argument.

Happy belated birthday, Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott! The Brooklyn-born rapper famously known as Joey Bada$$ celebrates 26 years by dropping a new song, ‘Let It Breathe,’ and a music video to go along with it. Not many people will be the ones giving gifts on their birthdays, but we’re so glad he did.

The artist gets personal by showcasing NYC and sharing some behind-the-scenes footage of when he bought his lime green Porsche last year. He uses the whip as a backdrop for the bulk of his video, which he actually only shot the day before.

Joey Bada$$ is never one to be modest, and he definitely isn’t on his special day. He starts off the track by rapping, “Want you to celebrate me like I’m dead already/ Like this crown upon my head is heavy/ Put my picture in the dictionary next to legendary/ Swear I’m raisin’ every bar, and it’s like thеy never ready.” He then reflects on all of his accomplishments, articulating that every January, he’s reminded that he only improves with each year. In the second verse, he stays flexing. Bada$$ relishes in the fact that he doesn’t have competition in the rap game, and he’s not going anywhere. He ends the track with some powerful, yet playful, bars: “This ain’t no DJ Khaled pop BS, nah/ That is not a diss, that’s one just for the press, uh/ If I was to flex, that wouldn’t be a stretch/ I hold weight in my city, they still ain’t see me sweat.”

Check out the ‘Let It Breathe’ music video below, on Pro Era‘s Youtube channel, and don’t forget to wish Joey Bada$$ a happy birthday!

Statik Selektah is bridging the gap between classic rap and the new generation with his stellar new single ‘Keep It Moving’ with Nas & Joey Bada$$. Nas is one of the greatest emcees of all time and Joey is easily one of the best of the past decade. Hearing them link over Statik’s soulful production is a reminder of East Coast hip-hop’s timeless appeal. The two masters trade verses with each showing each other love. Joey closes his verse with an homage to Nas rapping, “‘Cause it’s a hassle gettin’ caught up in the Devil’s lasso/And that’s what a wise man once told me/I got a lot of love and respect for my OGs,” a clear reference to ‘The World Is Yours.’ Nas returns the love as his verse caps off with, “Who would have knew I would rock them events? I rock with my young Gs, that’s just common sense (Sense).” Statik lets the beat ride with powerful female vocals and choice cuts to give it an anthemic golden era vibe.

Joey bada$$ proves simplicity is key with three new songs in The Light Pack. When the Brooklyn native isn’t donating $25,000 to the NYC homeless youth during the pandemic, he’s cooking up tracks to save the game. Lyrically, The Light Pack can’t be beaten. So if you’re fiending for some good hip hop, you’re in the right place.

The pack starts with ‘The Light,’ where Joey makes an iconic comeback after a 3-year hiatus from solo releases. In the song, Joey expresses why he was gone for so long. He raps, “I admit it, I was gone for a lil’ minute / It’s like I lost my glow, yo, my inner light was dimmin.’ / Now I got my mojo back, y’all don’t know how to act.” Now that’s something we can all relate to. We’re glad he was able to recharge because he came charged up and put a hit on some of the newer rappers: “This is mumble rap extermination. This is Godly interpolation”… I mean, he was just saying what we were all thinking.

‘No explanation’ comes next with a feature from Pusha T. The rappers team up to give powerful commentary on the racial injustices going on in the world. Backed by beautiful keys, Joey Bada$$ and Pusha T show compassion for their communities. The track might even give some more insight into why Joey felt the need to come back. He says, “But I got other things on my mind that’s much bigger like bein’ the voice to this voiceless generation.”

‘Shine’ is the soothing finale to the hard-hitting pack. The soul-inspired track samples Roy Ayer’s beautiful ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine,’ and Joey touches on the stresses of money, respect, and fame. While most of us are having struggles on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I think we all can relate to how hard it is to balance life right now.

This 3 song pack was definitely what the hip hop world needed right now. Not only was it poignant, but it was also concise, sending the message loud and clear. There are no frills in the production in any of these 3 songs, which is refreshing. With simple, but hard beats, and even harder lyrics – we don’t think this is a drop you can skip. Listen to The Light Pack bellow and get inspired.

As anti-police brutality & anti-racism protests continue across the entire US and around the world, I’ve found myself looking for music that reflects our reality. One album that quickly came to mind was Joey Bada$$’ 2017 release ALL-AMERIKKAN BADA$$. From the title alone, Joey made a statement with this body of work, pushing America’s issues with racism to the forefront. The socially conscious work is his most powerful and important to date and I would implore you to listen to the full album. While there are a number of incredible songs contained within the project, one stood out to me more than any when listening this week, the album’s closing track ‘AMERIKKAN IDOL’.

Clocking in at over 6 minutes, Joey Bada$$ drops a multitude of knowledge and shines a light into his personal experience. The first verse covers everything from racial profiling to self-protection, and ends with a resounding “fuck white supremacy.” Even the hook packs a powerful message, flipping the classic Nas line, with a political twist. “I’m out for dead presidents to represent me, Because I’ve never known a live one that represent me.”

Most striking is the third verse. Hearing it while seeing everything that’s transpired over the last two weeks is nothing short of chilling. Rather than giving you my own interpretation, I suggest you read the lyrics below and truly listen to song.

“What the government is doin’ amongst our people is downright evil
Disturbin’, but not surprisin’, that’s for certain
With all of the conflict of propaganda, I believe they are simply tryna slander
Start a Civil War within the USA amongst black and white and those alike
They are simply pushin’ us to our limit so that we can all get together and get with it
They want us to rebel, so that it makes easier for them to kill us and put us in jails
Alton Sterlings are happenin’ every day in this country and around the world
The scary part, boys and girls
Is most of these stories don’t make it to the news and reach mass consciousness
It is for sure time that we as a people stand up for acknowledgement
And accomplishment of what we call human rights
It is time to rebel, better yet, raise hell
I just want everyone to be cautious about how they go about it
Because this is all part of the government’s plan and what they been plottin’
They’re literally beggin’ for this to happen, so they can kill us off
Usin’ uprisin’ and rebellion as the excuse in a timely fashion
The cancerous foods, the chemical warfare, economic sufferin’ is not workin’ fast enough
There are many steps ahead of us and manifestin’ the future that they want
We have to work together, not only rattlin’ them on a physical plane
But to outsmart them on an intellectual mental level the same
As black men, I think our gangs need to do a better job at protectin’ us
The people, our communities and not assistin’ in destroyin’ them brutally
It’s time to even the score
‘Cause who do we call when the police break the law?
We are so quick to pick up a gun and kill one another
But not quick enough to pick it up and protect each other
The code words to killin’ a black man by police is, “He’s got a gun”
Damned if he do, damned if he don’t, damned if he runs
Or what about them? Them murderers got it
We need solutions, you better start plottin’ now
It’s always been clear that they don’t value our lives
My people been sufferin’ way too long
And I’m tired of singin’ the same old song
People actin’ like this shit isn’t happenin’, it’s downright wrong
Justice won’t be served by a hashtag, and that’s the very reason I ask that
What are we to do? We’re scattered around
With no clue of this ugly truth
All we know is who they ridiculed and who gets minisculed
Time to wake the fuck up and do our own research
And not form opinions based on just what we’ve heard
Ameri-K-K-K-a is force feedin’ you lies down your throats with a silver spoon
And eventually, we’ll all be doomed
Real, real, real soon”

‘AMERIKKKAN IDOL’ feels predictive and futuristic when listening in hindsight, but it’s just a reminder that the same issues were happening in 2017 and have been going on forever.

The latest hip-hop cerberus is composed of the groups Flatbush Zombies, Pro Era, and The Underachievers aka Beast Coast. This formation comes with the return of Joey Bada$$ and latest collaboration titled ‘Left Hand.’ It also comes with the announcement of a joint tour titled Escape From New York, that begins in July and runs through August. With all of this, Meechy Darko took to social media to tease a forthcoming Beast Coast album. As each group are Brooklyn based artists, it only made sense to put on for New York and the east coast by cordially joining forces.

‘Left Hand’ possesses a breathtaking total of nine MC’s laying down verses. Joey Bada$$, Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, Erick Arc Elliott, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution, CJ Fly, AK and Issa Gold each distribute unhinged bars. Meechy Darko of Flatbush Zombies handles the merciless hook before jumping into the first verse with Pro Era’s Nyck Caution. After this, members from each group battle it out in a friendly competition only pushing each other to come with their hottest lines. Check out the war zone of written poetry below, out now on Pro Era Records, and keep an eye out for the upcoming album. Tour tickets are also now on sale.
