There’s no doubt that Gibbs and Madlib’s ‘Piñata’ is the best colloborative rap record of 2014. ‘Knicks,’ highlights the best components of the entire record: The contrast between the soulful beats and the low, dirty vocals. This combination results in a cohesive song about pushing ‘knickle’ bags, Michael Brown, and trap life in Gary, Indiana.

In this remix, we get a couple guest verses from Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$ and Ransom. Only then do we wonder… Are these guys taking ‘Knicks’ literally? Is this song about an NBA team or moving dope? After some basketball references, Bam Bam sets us straight: ‘You ever had to take a shit while tripping balls off? … I’m not the one for all the small talk.’ Lovely.

Joey Bada$$ just released the first single off his upcoming debut album B4DA$$. Produced by long time collaborator Kirk Knight, ‘Big Dusty’ is gritty and raw. Bada$$ fans will be happy to see that he didn’t try to change his style to make a radio friendly single; this is definitely for the streets (and a good sign of what’s to come). The ominous loops with Joey’s viscous flow and bars are sure to excite. His wordplay is on point and will have you hitting replay. “Can I live? What, these niggas want me off a bridge?/ If I say it’s turnt down, do I burn that shit?/ Truth is, if it ain’t real, I don’t feel it/ If it don’t hit my spirit, I don’t get near it”. Pro Era – #SECCSTAPEVOL2

Joey Bada$$ and his homies collectively are Pro Era. These cats dropped the #SECCSTAPEVOL2 late last night. One thing about these young rappers is that they individually and collectively have some serious talent. The whole Pro Era sound is so 90’s and it really does feel nostalgic. The free stream, 7 track EP starts with Dessy Hinds “Chocolate Strawberries” and if this is your first time hearing this cat, you’ll definitely be impressed. Kirk Knight provides bars and production on this tape, and on one of the joints he handles both independently. “Pussy Facx” is very upbeat and has some funky synth-like instrumentation. This is a cool listen. Check it out if you fuxwith Pro Era.
