Highlights of this year’s lineup include the likes of Subtronics, who is returning for the first time since 2019. Zeds Dead is making their WAKAAN Festival debut this year for a solo set as well as the first-ever Zeds Dead b2b Liquid Stranger set. Freddy Todd and Of The Trees will be performing as their collaborative BLAAP project. An official 1985 Music takeover will feature label head Alix Perez, along with Torcha, Hyroglifics, and Monty. Barclay Crenshaw is returning after electrifying performances the last two years that helped cement his resurgence as a bass music icon. The duo of jordnmoody and Ujuu will be on stage together as FLORA. As founder of WAKAAN, Liquid Stranger himself is also performing three exclusive sets, including a throwback set with a list of not-yet-announced friends.

There is more to WAKAAN than just the music. The festival features a diverse array of workshops, ranging from such topics as health and wellness to music production. The grounds of Mulberry Mountain are scattered with art installations, merch vendors, games, and more. In particular, this year features the return of Soul Spin Art Gallery, where fans can create their very own custom vinyl records that will be kept on the mountain for years to come.

In the past years that I’ve attended WAKAAN, the crowd energy has been unreal. There is a real, concerted effort on the part of these festival-goers to make friends and inspire each other. I’ve told my life story to a stranger on the way to a Port-a-Potty. I’ve always left with more trinkets than I arrived with. I’ve been handed hors d’oeuvres from people passing by mid-headliner. I’ve played Super Smash Brothers and watched Adventure Time on a screen in the middle of the forest. The sense of community that this festival has is something to behold, and I hope everyone gets to at least once.

“It’s a madness, I been trappin’, I seen action,” Pete English’s voice echoes on the first track. A devilish tune rooted in UK dubstep, ‘ACT!ØN’ fills the room with a sinister air. A slight synth wobble, pervasive underneath Pete English’s voice throughout, is at once both sensual and spine-chilling. The slow swing of the percussion in ‘DREAMSCAPE’ is like a wade through sonic murk, interspersed with an angelic vocal gently resonating through the background haze. The namesake track of the EP then comes out swinging with a wave of phantasmagorical sub-bass. The absolute frisson of ‘FØRSAKEN’ will leave your ears quivering with pleasure. As an extra-special treat, jordnmoody has graced the EP with a downtempo VIP of his bass-house banger ‘VOICES.’ An eerie, nightmarish, haze veils the slowed-down final track. This is proper Halloween music.

There was a period last year where I locked myself in the studio to whip up as many new tunes as possible before playing LIB, this was one of those tunes. I just came off writing a couple atonal type tracks and wanted to try something on a more melodic tip but still have a bit of grit to it. This song was birthed from simply wanting to craft a tune that started melodic and atmospheric but then morphs into something more aggressive. It was the first song I wrote off the EP, and served as the perfect intro track due to the nature of the tune. Ultimately, what this song means to me is kinda circling back on not knowing where I fit in within the music scene. I’m kinda all over the place with output which I’ve pretty much come to terms with. I’m sure other multi-genre artists can relate, it’s a bit tougher finding your ground when you don’t fit comfortably into one genre.

In the latest installment, the line up of artists could not be anymore top notch. With it containing 9 tracks, one of which is a collab between Danforth and REBRTH, there is plenty of room for each track to radiate. Some of the other names we see are TaDa, jordnmoody and Oh! Gee to name a few. The quality of build behind this compilation is certainly one of their greatest efforts yet. Furthermore, with a restructured brand is this showcase of passion, determination and forward thinking artists coming together. It was difficult for me to choose a few standouts but I had to highlight a couple tracks. Kabes ‘Plague’ first off with its no-nonsense aggression straight out of the gate before it falls into a zone of comfort with a future drop in the second half. I am a sucker for genre switch ups like that. Alex Beal‘s ‘Exodus’ was another that was a surprise for me as I am not very familiar with this name. However, after hearing the flux of authentic trap with a slight bounce at the end, it left me wanting more.

“Another big change is the release schedule, going from once a month to an average of, at least, 3 tracks a month between Above and Below,” explains Bernard Capistrano. Expect more from this newly branded project and scope the latest Sounds From Below Vol. 6 here.

The track’s break pulls back the production intensity while hitting the gas on the vocal sample used. Taking the now iconic clip from an infuriated citizen on the LAPD Zoom Call really showcases the anger and frustration felt across the US and beyond. “…I had two friends go to the protest in Beverly Hills a couple days ago and the protest was peaceful until the police showed up with their excessive, violent force, shooting rubber bullets and throwing tear gas. Is this what you think of protect and serving? Fuck you, Michael Moore, I refuse to call you an officer or a chief because you don’t deserve those titles. You are a disgrace. Suck my dick and choke on it. I yield my time, FUCK YOU,” the caller states.The agressive words lead into a hard-hitting drop with the song’s namesake samples sprinkled in, amplifying the emotions.

‘ftp’ concludes with chants from the original Minneapolis protests with a group singing “No justice, no peace, eradicate the police.” We’ve covered a few impactful rap releases that really capture the movement and the moment, but jordnmoody & kizer have raised the bar in bass music with ‘ftp.’

“The amount of black lives lost to police violence in this country is fucking horrendous. it has been made perfectly clear time and time again that they aren’t here to protect us. We wanted to add fuel to the fire with this one, through music. Institutionalized racism runs deep in this country; it’s in EVERYTHING. Police are one tip of a giant iceberg. We need to keep pushing, protesting, educating, and speaking out. Change is coming.” – jordnmoody
