Opening with an ominous synth loop that touches on borderline psychedelic, the audience will be immediately enraptured in the cacophony of sounds. Trading violent, earthquake-inducing growls, for wubs so clean you could eat a 4-course meal off them, the first drop defies all worldly preconceptions. One of those tracks that make you burst out laughing from how mind-bending it truly is, you could deem this one a Grade-A gutbuster. The second drop partially embarks from the cleanliness of the first, adding in a cantankerous crunch that makes even Pringles slightly jealous. For fans of hard-hitting, forward-thinking trap music, ‘Kooki’ is a can’t miss. Check it out for yourself below!

Two names quickly advancing the ranks of modern dubstep, Josh Cassidy & WRAITH are only just beginning an onslaught of audible terror. Exploiting the vast expanse lodged just between trap and dubstep, Sydney’s Josh Cassidy has grown notorious for sound design dexterity and an unrivaled ability to champion his own authenticity in remixes such as Spag Heddy’s ‘Zoom’ or a flip of RL Grime’s edit of ‘Acrylics’ by TNGHT. Maintaining an air of secrecy surrounding his style, Perth-native WRAITH capitalized upon the massive trajectory surrounding his debut Circus Records release ‘Vermin’ alongside AXEN, which set an initial standard of excellence that has only been further challenged with preceding releases such as ‘Imperial Flow.’

Working cohesively for the release of their latest collaboration, ‘FLEX’ utilizes an introduction like a surprise ambush. Leveraging the suspense of a nonchalant piano melody, a sudden fragmented vocal sample ignites a furious build that seizes the track within its clutches before launching into a variegated gauntlet of gritty bass and wildly resonating digital frequencies.

Keep your eyes on the land down under and be sure to check out ‘FLEX’ from Josh Cassidy & WRAITH below!

Aussie connoisseur of ludicrously heavy productions, Josh Cassidy, has been carving a path of relentless excellence as of late. Putting out banger after banger, he’s shown no signs of slowing his pace any time soon. His latest example is a flip of the legendary RL Grime edit of TNGHT’s track ‘Acrylics,’ a festival anthem for literal years.

Cassidy’s flip takes the original and turns it on its head, going for a much heavier dubstep iteration in his first drop. The vocal sample “we don’t give a fuck what you say” right before the continuation gives this wonderful whooshing effect back into the drop while simultaneously spiking your adrenal glands. If used in a mix, this track would catch most off guard, going straight for the throat via the ears.

The second drop is completely different, utilizing quick thrusting of aggressive trap frisbee sounds that hits exceedingly low on any subwoofer. This would be a fantastic piece to test out a new speaker system with, flexing wide ranges of sounds throughout.

The original edit is a timeless classic, but Josh Cassidy’s take is a breath of fresh air and welcome rebirth. You shouldn’t be surprised to hear this dropped in many live sets throughout the next several months. For now though, make sure to check it out for yourself below!

Sydney’s Josh Cassidy has rapidly honed the scope of his production over the course of the past year, grooming an ambitious trajectory for a propitious career within Australia’s vibrant trap locale. A tactician for forging heroic bass soundscapes riddled with profuse subs, Cassidy’s ear for technicality lends him the ability to maintain crisp audible clarity amid turbulent drops.

Initially featured in Volume 12 of our Focus Five Series, Cassidy has quickly developed into a FUXWITHIT favorite with a diverse acumen of ruthless self-championed singles such as ‘Hideout’ and ‘Ghetto’ or his more impassioned side in collaborative, synth-heavy remixes of Made by Tsuki x Moss ‘Wasteland’ and Benny Blanco & Juice WRLD’s ‘Roses’.

It was an immense pleasure to catch up with Cassidy personally to discuss his earliest upbringings and inspirations as an artist, the untold challenges of embarking on a production career in Australia, and a brief look into his process for sound design.

Be sure to check out the full interview and hour-long guest mix below!

Do you have a formal background in music or is the majority of your production talent self-taught?

I played guitar and drums here and there when I was younger but it was just a phase at the time. I did really enjoy playing the drums though. I wasn’t great at music theory back then either so I have been slowly learning all of that to help myself out when writing music.

Who are some of your earliest influences or inspirations as an artist?

I remember when I was younger my brother and I found Skrillex and it was something we had never heard of before. ‘Scary Monster and Nice Sprites’ had just come out and I couldn’t stop listening. The sounds he made were so new and refreshing from anything else I had heard and really put me onto electronic music. YouTube channels such as UKF Dubstep and All Trap Music always had the coolest stuff on their channel to so I used just listen for hours to all the new uploads.

What have been some of the most challenging aspects of embarking on a career as a musician in Australia?

I started off as a DJ for about two years before I started producing so the transition to being seen as an artist rather than a DJ has been tough. I made the decision this year to really focus on my productions and start playing headline shows rather than take any and every support set. I really want to be taken seriously as an artist this year. The scene in Australia is small in comparison to the US which can be tough because there is a lot of good talent coming out of Australia.

To what extent do you feel creative inspiration should be drawn from the environment as opposed to aroused from within?

Inspiration for tracks has been quite tough over the last few months for me. I often feel really inspired after going to shows and come home wanting to make a banger. Other times it is just an idea that comes into my head. I don’t draw too much inspiration from my environment so I just think it’s different for each artist. I don’t produce on a laptop at the moment so am never really working on music outside my usual space, which can hinder inspiration.

The majority of your releases utilize exceptional sonic variety, what does your process for sound design look like when sitting down to a new track?

It all depends on what my inspiration is and the vibe I am trying to create. Some of my tracks have those really ambient and spatial vibes which are all about having lots of background layers to fill the space. Other tracks of mine are created with the intention of sounding arrogant and angry so heavy distorted basses are generally my starting point and loud drums.

What do we have to look forward to in this guest mix as well as the remainder of 2019 from you?

This guest mix features a lot of my unreleased tracks in the works as well as some stuff from my EP I’m hoping to release later in the year. There is a bunch of unreleased tracks from a bunch of homies as well that I love to play out. For the rest of the year, I’m just going to working on singles and my EP and hope to be able to tour Australia late this year / early next year.

The momentum simply hasn’t let up since the turn of the year for Sydney’s Josh Cassidy. With a rendition of ‘Roses’, ‘GOSH’, and solo release ‘Ghetto’ falling in consecutive months since the start of 2019, Cassidy has made it his sole purpose to test the limits of his creative potential and further himself from the masses as the year unfolds.

“Over the past few months, I’ve made it my mission not to follow any rules or restrictions and just to be creative with my music. I often find myself in a rut if I try to stick to a particular style or technique and sometimes just experimenting gives me the creative spark to make something new,” Cassidy shares regarding his efforts to keep the creative drive pushing forward.

The impact of his efforts really hit home with his latest release ‘Hideout’, further emphasizes the time and diligence of his efforts. An ominous chirping of birds paves the introduction of the track as Cassidy crafts a jungle-like soundscape equipped with a mesmerizing melody of synths and echoing tribal percussion. A riser hunts stealthily in the shadows of the underbrush, timing its ambush with precision, and provoking an eruption of gyrating subs.

“‘Hideout’ is a track I feel highlights where I am at with my production. This track represents a stepping stone in my journey as an artist and has opened quite a few doors for me, enriching my confidence in my work and helping to solidify my place as an upcoming producer.”

Setting a high standard for production from the land down under, Josh Cassidy & CUSTOME are quickly gaining momentum within the underground trap music scene as they unveil the breadth of their creative potential with heat-seeking singles such as Cassidy’s ‘Rebellion’ or CUSTOME’s flip of ‘Drama’ with Moore Kismet.

Finding uncanny synchronicity between their own styles, the two get busy giving a signature trap-treatment to ‘Roses’ by Benny Bianco & JUICE WRLD. Utilizing the nostalgic rap chorus laid expertly over crisp drums, the track builds into uplifting synths, which waver delicately before unearthing an outright despicable sub-heavy second drop.

Talents align as Josh Cassidy & CUSTOME find creative harmony in a complex, production-focused remix of ‘Roses’. Be sure to check out the full track below and don’t forget to grab a copy of the flip for free download here.

Native to Sydney, Australia Josh Cassidy has demonstrated a remarkable amount of personal growth over the course of the past year, refining the intricacies of his production and sinking his claws further into his own signature rendition of the trap genre. A melting pot of Australian talent, Cassidy’s collaborative remix of ‘Wasteland’ with fellow Aussie NYRVUS initially caught my eye, while his more recent explorations ‘Rebellon’ and ‘Trouble’ have confirmed him as an ambitious young name to watch with the come of the New Year.

Furthering the expanse of his creative depth comes the latest single from Cassidy ‘Ghetto’. A resounding echo, like the gentle dripping of a leaky pipe in a remote basement dungeon, furnishes the opening to the song. Without any forewarning, a blaring siren indicates a perilous future, joined by a crisp ensemble of snares that build the energy of the track to a pinnacle, before dropping into a grungy barrage of low rumbling synths and exquisitely placed breaks.

With a tremendous debut year behind him, Josh Cassidy will certainly be a name we keep an eye on with 2019, be sure to check out ‘Ghetto’ and grab the free download of the track here!
