From the refreshing ‘Time Voyage‘ to the ethereal ‘Open Spaces‘ with Nevve, the Australian producer has pushed a newfound melodic aspect to his sound and has embraced it to its full potential. With the recent release of his URCA EP on Monstercat, Just A Gent continues to show us all why he is regarded as one of the most versatile artists out right now.

Along with the aforementioned tracks, the URCA EP boasts three more vocal-driven pieces that bring listeners on a sonic journey. The opening and title track builds beautifully for over two minutes before a vibrant section adds knock and bounce to the orchestral piece. ‘Iris in the Dark’ continues along this theme, using McCall’s angelic vocals in the introduction to lure you in before a radiant section truly hooks you. ‘Wings’ caps off the project with vocals from Olivia Grace once again driving the track forward until a sparkling aura of melodies put you in a dream-like state.

The electronic music scene’s favourite moustache-sporting gentleman has proven countless times that his versatility is unmatched, and recent releases on Monstercat have only furthered this limitless innovation. From ‘Time Voyage‘ to ‘Open Spaces,’ Just A Gent has displayed a newfound radiance within his productions and is showing no signs of slowing down.

With the imminent arrival of a full project on the Vancouver-based label as well as other recent developments in his life, we knew we had to link up with Just A Gent to talk about his recent experiences. Along with the interview, the talented artist has graced us with an action-packed mix that is sure to get your heart pumping out of its chest. Check out the interview and mix below!

What can we expect from your guest mix? What is the best setting for listening?

The mix is definitely on the heavier side but as it progresses it chills out a tad. I think the best setting is maybe a workout session or even just to pump you up. There’s also a few exclusives in there from myself and a few friends ;)

How is the Time Voyage tour going? What show has been the favourite?

The tour has been awesome, it’s been super interesting to see people’s reaction to my new music and so far it seems everyone is just as pumped about it as I was. All the shows have honestly been equally awesome so it’s hard to pick. Super keen to tour outside of Australia soon though, trying to tee up some US & Canada dates for next year!

You recently went to Bali for a writing camp with fellow producers. How did this idea come about?

The Bali camp idea came about when we were just chatting in a Twitter group and someone mentioned how sick it would be to go to Bali and make beats and then we just ended up doing it haha.

How long were you there for and how many tracks did you make? Can we expect any of the tracks/ideas to be released any time soon?

I was there for 5 days, I made a few ideas but spent most of the time just chilling out cause I had been in creative mode for the past 6 months and had almost worn my brain dry of ideas but it was still awesome to just help out and teach some mixing tricks etc.

What kind of production challenges did you guys do? How do you think these types of challenges make you a better producer/artist?

Some of the challenges were like make an entire track out of one Balinese sample which was a super struggle cause making a kick and snare from a pretty loose vocal sample was definitely something I haven’t tried before but I got something in the end haha.

It definitely helps to be a better artist, I challenge myself all the time otherwise I would never end up learning anything.

What else do you do on a daily basis to become a better artist?

I’m always watching YouTube and listening to podcasts of my favourite artists and engineers. I also make a new idea everyday, they are hardly ever great but it keeps my mind creative and that’s what I need.

You’ve recently found a home on Monstercat, congrats! Can we expect more releases or even a full project on the label?

Thank you very much! Yep I have just finished up my EP which will be releasing with them later this year, definitely my most proud work to date so I’m super duper excited for it.

Do your ties with the Vancouver-based label indicate a North American tour in the near future?

Fingers crossed. That is definitely the plan.

What are you most excited about for the rest of 2019?

I’m excited to chill out a bit and focus on building a new show and working on some new ideas for a potential album next year but no promises yet ;)

Returning to the esteemed Canadian label, Just A Gent has teamed up with ever-present vocalist Nevve to deliver another feel-good anthem titled ‘Open Spaces.’ True to the nature of the track, the introduction depicts a vast expanse through mystical effects and Nevve’s nearly divine vocal offering. A lengthy yet captivating build in tension brings listeners to a highly infectious section, where Just A Gent layers a pop-infused bounce below the radiant vocals to evoke warm emotions.

The tuxedo sporting Australian Producer Just A Gent has been an innovator in the dance music scene for the past half decade. Building a massive following as an independent artist, Jacob Grant has continuously blended different elements of dance music, from melodic piano riffs to pounding basslines to create a “Gent’s” take on dance music. Starting 2019 off strong with his single ‘First Contact,’ the Gent’s Monstercat debut ‘Time Voyage’ is a beautifully executed track, powered by the vocals of singer/songwriter Hauskey.

‘Time Voyage’ starts with the reveal of the primary melody, and around the twenty second mark, Just A Gent introduces an elaborate synth, which is used to play hide and seek with the melody. Around the one minute mark, the heavy synths are traded in for an uptempo drum pattern, keys and strings, and the powerful voice of Hauskey. The strings and keys are later replaced by a vibey synth melody. ‘Time Voyage’ is the breath of fresh air dance music needed. Roll the window down and throw this one on.

A few weeks back, we had the pleasure of connecting with Just A Gent to discuss his http://EP project, among other things. Released on November 2nd, the Newcastle-based producer states “the new EP is more or less an evolution of the Just A Gent sound“. With tracks such as the euphoric ‘Hold’ featuring Thief and the gritty ‘404‘ included in the work, it is evident that http://EP is the culmination of months of hard work. This effort is personified in the form of six versatile tracks that further showcase Just A Gent’s artistry.

In addition to the two aforementioned tracks and the previously-released ‘Space Odyssey’ and ‘VIBE’, http://EP contains two more forward-thinking heaters. The first is a collaboration with fellow Aussie Yvng Jalapeño titled ‘Drowning’. A cohesive combination of styles, ‘Drowning’ takes anonymous female vocals and accentuates them with a bouncy yet metallic take on future bass and trap. The project is capped off with ‘Injustice’, where Just A Gent continues to display his ability to heighten vocals with pristine production. Flawlessly weaving his way between hip-hop, future bass and trap, ‘Injustice’ is the perfect conclusion to a powerful EP.

Check out the http://EP project below and let us know what you think!

Hailing from Newcastle, Australia, Just A Gent is yet another Aussie artist taking the world by storm. His style is hard to pin down. He can produce within any genre, showcasing his talents in the realms of future bass, trap, house and most recently rap. He crafts stunning originals and is responsible for some of the wildest remixes to date. The latter allow his creativity to roam freely with Just A Gent taking on everything from Kid Cudi to Phantom Of The Opera, Tears For Fears to Grand Theft Auto and everything in between. The creative approach isn’t just limited to his reworks, his originals explore the same diverse expanse. Just look the hard hitting dubtep vs. trap energy on ‘404’ and the chilled rap aesthetic that is ‘VIBE.’ This range is sure to be on full display on his upcoming EP http://EP which due out early November. With the EP just over a week away, we had the pleasure of connecting with Just A Gent to discuss the project, producing across genres, his love for video games and much more. He also breaks down what makes a gentlemen and what it would take for him to get rid of his mustache. Check out the full interview below.

What makes you a gentleman? Do you have any advice for average guys who want to become gents?

I don’t think what makes someone a gentleman has changed, chivalry still lives on but I guess in the modern day something chivalrous might even be just simply to be nice and not have their head stuck in their phone haha.

You’ve produced across a wide-array of genres. What draws you towards creating within a certain sound?

Well I think it depends on the mood I’m in and what I have been doing. If I have just got back from a nightclub or hectic show I’ll be in the zone and wanting to make something that people can go nuts too, but if I’m just depressed and bored at home I will end up making something melancholy and uplifting to try and lift the mood. I don’t really set out to make a particular sound it more or less just happens.

What makes you happy outside of music?

I love to hang with my dog Ernie and my girlfriend Molly. We watch a lot of TV and binge Harry Potter at least once a month. We also see every single movie that comes through the cinemas. I also love video games and I also make raps with my mates which is pretty fun.

You seem to be a pretty big gamer. What’s your favourite video game of all time and why?

My favourite video game of all time. That’s a tough one. It would probably have to be Mass Effect 2. I love the Mass Effect universe and I love Bioware (the developer) and that game just takes me places. I actually wrote a lot of the songs from stories to tell while on my 3rd playthrough of the game. If you haven’t played the Mass Effect series you should definitely do it, the original game is pretty clunky but the story is so thick that it’s totally worth pulling through.

Your mustache has become an essential part of your brand. What would it take for you to shave it off? A certain super power? The ability to cure world hunger?

Not a lot of things could make me shave it. However a super power or curing world hunger would most definitely suffice. If this is an offer though can I please have the ability to teleport because that would make my life the bomb.

I love remixing tracks and the more successful the Just A Gent originals become the less I get to put out remixes. So I created Just A Tune to pretty much allow me to do that…

What prompted the creation of your secondary Just A Tune account? What importance do remixes have in your creative process and place as an artist?

Remixes have been what I was making from the beginning. I love remixing tracks and the more successful the Just A Gent originals become the less I get to put out remixes. So I created Just A Tune to pretty much allow me to do that, put out basically unfinished, unmixed edits and remixes of tunes that I love.

You had the opportunity to tour with San Holo last year. Are there any important insights or lessons you learned from him during your time together?

For sure, San is an amazing person and that tour was incredible. I have never been on a tour of that scale so it was a totally new experience for me. Touring with him I got to see what it’s like being a person who tours almost all year and honestly it’s tough and San is a pro for being able to do it and it was super inspiring to see that he still loves it and can make music in such uncreative environments like sketchy hotel rooms and such.

From early support through Unearthed, to performing on Like A Version, you have a long history with triple J. How impactful has their support been on your career?

In Australia it’s been monumental. The Aussie audience finds a lot of their music on radio and it’s really helped me reach a way bigger audience. The Like A Version was especially huge, I have never received so many messages about a track haha.

The EP concept is that humans have created an AI and they went bonkers (error 404) and we had to go to space to escape it.

Can you tell us about the upcoming EP? What’s sound direction? What are some of the stories contained within it?

The new EP is more or less an evolution of the Just A Gent sound. I have been working on some of these tracks for quite a while now and I think I’m finally happy with the final product. The sound direction is a tad darker than Stories To Tell but it has a few upbeat tracks like ‘Space Odyssey’ and ‘Vibe’ (which are both going to be on the EP) so it’s got that variation just like how Stories To Tell had. The EP concept is that humans have created an AI and they went bonkers (error ‘404’) and we had to go to space to escape it.

Australian producer Just A Gent has consistently proven why he is regarded as one of the most versatile in the game. The talented artist never seems to stick to a genre for too long, and his releases on various labels such as Lowly Palace and bitbird as well as his side project Just A Tune go to show that Just A Gent is never confining himself to a generic sound.

Yesterday, Just A Gent validated himself once again as an all-around producer, this time being sought out by Zhu and Tame Impala to officially remix their incredible crossover hit, ‘My Life.’ While staying true to the original vocals, Just A Gent gives the track a complete makeover with his distorted synths and euphoric energy. The remix is a true testament to the producer’s raw talent, as it showcases his ability to combine funk with intensity and includes his signature, quality sound design. Check out the remix below and grab the free download!

Leave it to the Australian sir, Just A Gent, to bring forth a seemingly innocent tune in ‘404’, only for it to take a left turn and shatter into sheer grime not too soon after.

It’s a far step from his general future bass style, being gritty and mechanic in nature – particularly in its monstrous, glitch-infested drops. The distortion adds an illusion of syncopation to the rhythm, yet everything is perfectly held together, thanks to the bassline jutting through the robotic madness.

The Gent is no stranger to the filthier side of music, given tracks like ‘Killing In the Name‘ under his alternate project Just A Tune, to ‘Phenomenon’ off his EP, Stories to Tell, which reveal a “dark” side that he doesn’t show all too often. Whether this is an one-off tune of its own kind to begin the year, or a new path being paved by Just A Gent, has yet to be seen. One thing’s for certain, though – he’s got a firm grasp on it nonetheless, and is able to bend/shift through various styles at will, and with ease.

Check out the tune below, and make no error on its availability – you can grab it as a free download !
