Offering a perfect fusion of their styles, the project explores a wide array of sounds and vibes. The opener ‘END OF AN ERA’ packs a welcoming yet introspective energy. It’s upbeat and easygoing, setting the tone for what’s to come. The mellowed-out vibes are found on other standouts such as ‘STAR,’ and the darker ‘ASMR.’ Those looking for a bit of extra knock will be pleased to find the bouncy ‘CAFFEINE,’ off-kilter ‘FOOLS’ and gritty ‘CIRCUS.’ Fans of their funkier stylings need to check ‘MOVIN UP’ and ‘CONTINUE.’

Vignette presents a little something for every listener. The tracks are short but sweet, evoking quick changes in emotion and energy without ever feeling jarring. Jam this tape while you’re working, in transit, or just relaxing at home.

Known for his intoxicating beats and charming excerpts into his life, Kaelin Ellis is a producer with a distinctive, sultry sound that can’t be missed. Giving hip-hop beats a funky r&b twist, the bopsmith continues to captivate listeners with short snippets of impenetrable groove. But even only landing at 1 minute and 49 seconds, his latest single, ‘LIL BIT’ is oozing with sex appeal.

‘LIL BIT’ is the pure essence of funk music. Brimming with erotic electric guitar chords and a deliberate drum beat, the tune gives you exactly what you need to get in the mood. But it’s the Barry Whitesque vocal samples really take it over the top, concocting the perfect song to add to your bedroom playlist. Despite how sexy ‘LIL BIT’ is, Kaelin Ellis injects his playful persona into the visualizer. Similar to his social media beat videos, he puts his production chops on display while also sprinkling in some up-close-and-personal shots of the artist singing along to the lyrics.

Check out the video and listen to Kaelin Ellis’ ‘LIL BIT’ below.

As much as we love hard-hitting trap, we can’t deny that future beats is the wave here at FUXWITHIT. And while we hate showing favorites, there’s just nobody who does it better than Kaelin Ellis. Whether he’s doing a guest mix with yours truly, dropping a short beat album, or even bootlegging the classics… the multi-platinum producer just doesn’t miss. This time, Kaelin Ellis is back with another project called the REMNANTS EP.

This EP is also quite short, sitting at just over 11 minutes. But unlike After Thoughts and MOMENTS, each track is a bit longer and hits around the 2-minute mark. REMNANTS starts off with ‘UH, UH’—a song the musician has dropped in almost every mix and live stream we’ve seen. He turns things up a notch with ‘GRIMES’ and ‘RICHOCHET’ and gives us trap fans exactly what we crave. ‘OOPS’ provides a calming break before ‘GO’ catches us off-guard, as the most experimental track of the bunch.

We just can’t get enough of whatever Kaelin Ellis is doing. And we’re always happy with how consistently he drops new music. But if you’re anything like us and want even more, check out his recent appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.

Enjoy Kaelin Ellis – REMNANTS EP below for some absolute future beat heat.

My favorite category of releases has to be funky flips mixtapes. A few weeks ago, we talked about Keys N Krates’ Flips Vol. 2 (which I haven’t been able to get enough of). And in perfect timing, Kaelin Ellis drops his RMX’s Vol. 4. We actually got a taste of what would be in this album in his FUXWITHIT guest mix, but the whole project is here and he did not disappoint.

In true Kaelin Ellis fashion, the beatmaker gives his silky smooth take on songs from legendary artists like Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Outkast, and more. If you’re in the mood for some throwbacks with a groovy twist, RMX’s Vol. 4 is for you. Ellis’ fusion of modern and vintage melodies is astounding and we can always count on him to bring immaculate vibes.

We’re keeping a pulse on whatever the producer will do next, and we think you definitely should, too. Until then, listen to Kaellin Ellis’ RMX’s Vol. 4 here and support him by buying the EP on Bandcamp.

With a crazy election going on right now, we’re in dire need of some soothing tunes.

With a crazy election going on right now, we’re in dire need of some soothing tunes. Good thing a couple of weeks ago, Kaelin Ellis released his new album, After Thoughts. The 12-track record is short and sweet but hits all the right spots. The producer has been dropping funky beat videos on Twitter throughout quarantine, which has been garnering him more (well-deserved) attention. After having Ellis on FUXWITHIT for an interview and guest mix, we were so hyped to listen to this new album.

Each minute-long track has its own vibe, but are equally groovy. While After Thoughts doesn’t feature many lyrics or vocals in general, the album is still jam-packed with emotion that listeners can interpret for themselves. The songs are aptly-titled to guide you on your own journey through your listen. That being said, you can only understand once you indulge in the melodic adventure that is After Thoughts. Contrary to its name, once you hear it, we think it’ll be at the forefront of your brain, securing Kaelin Ellis’ spot as one of the top producers today.

While it’s been a rough one for many, the producer is thriving. In 2020 Ellis has gone from a SoundCloud favourite to dropping the HOUSE EP with Lupe Fiasco, and his album MOMENTS. A multi-instrumentalist and gifted artist, his style fuses soul, hip-hop, trap and electronic. He’s at home flipping 2000’s rap classics, creating soulful instrumentals or even working with rap legends. Never lacking originality or skill, we figured it was time we connected with Kaelin Ellis for a guest mix + interview. The interview explores what kept him going while he was making beats in his car while delivering UberEats, working with Lupe Fiasco, potential Katrananda collabs, Tinder and more. As for the mix it’s a vibey rap journey filled with a bunch of his remixes and edits, classics from Roy Ayers and De La Soul, an unreleased original, and more.

What can we expect from the mix? Where are you taking listeners with this?

Expect a journey of sounds and some familiar vibes to play on your everyday walk.

Tell us a little bit about your musical background. How did you pick up so many instruments? What ultimately lead you to producing?

I grew up playing drums in church, and my Dad used to play a lot of instruments and make music back in the 70s and 80s. He introduced me to FL Studio and Sony Jam Trax and my life was changed forever.

I had this intention to serve and help create with others, and maybe it be the universe or a higher power, I was always taken care of when I would use my gift and walk in my purpose.

You said a few years back you were making beats in your car while delivering UberEats to make rent. What kept you motivated during that time to keep going?

Going through that period, I had this feeling like I needed to just keep pushing. I had this intention to serve and help create with others, and maybe it be the universe or a higher power, I was always taken care of when I would use my gift and walk in my purpose.

What was your initial reaction when you heard Lupe Fiasco rap over one of your beats? Where were you when you heard it? Did you lose it?

I woke up from a nap and I saw my homie Marcus text me saying I was on Lupe Fiasco’s instagram page with a full freestyle written. I definitely lost my mind at that point.

How did you go from that to collaborating on a full EP together?

I sent him a DM on instagram and I got his email address from him. I got in connection with his team and moved from there.

What was the working process like on HOUSE? What surprised you most about the project?

House was one of the quickest projects I’ve made outside of MOMENTS. I gave Lupe a beat pack and he turned into what became House EP. I was very surprised how quick he got to writing and recording.

Can we expect some Kaelin Ellis x Kaytranada tracks in the near future?

I hope, that’s my bro, we’ve made a couple tracks, one featuring a few artists, hopefully we can get back to them and finish those tracks.

What’s your personal take on artificial intelligence? Does it excite you or scare you? Why or why not?

I think it is pretty scary but if you understand it you can use it to help others.

A friend of mine at the beginning of this year told me to plant myself and stay grounded. That advice changed my life.

What was the last piece of advice that you received that really stuck with you?

A friend of mine at the beginning of this year told me to plant myself and stay grounded. That advice changed my life.

Why is Tinder so bad for musicians?

For me, Tinder wasted so much of my time. Not only did it waste my time, but it made me realize how lonely life can truly get when you don’t focus on your purpose. It’s better to focus on your craft and purpose, that way you can naturally meet the people who are meant to be in your life.

What’s your proudest accomplishment outside of music this year?

My proudest accomplishment outside of music this year was bouncing back from the intensity of life I experienced the last 3 years. I managed to start a business In the middle of this pandemic and it changed the trajectory of my career in the creative space. I’m super thankful to be in this position.

Twitter is the best and worst social media platforms out. At times it can be a pit of negativity, anxiety, toxicity and complaining. Other times it helps foster connections in a way that could only be possible through the platform. The latest example of Twitter bringing two people together comes from a connection made by bedroom producer Kaelin Ellis and rap legend Lupe Fiasco. Back in May Ellis was posting clips of beats he was making on Twitter. Lupe was tagged in the replies and somehow it managed to catch his attention. After being impressed, Lupe proceeded to rip the beat using a screen record, exported it into GarageBand, freestyled over it mapping the whole process in his lyrics, and uploaded it on Twitter. From there the relationship between the two creators blossomed and lead to the creation of their collaborative EP HOUSE, which is out today.

The 5 track project was created with Ellis making beats at home and sending them to Lupe to record over while locked down. Adding in Virgil Abloh as the project’s narrator brings the impressive collaboration to new heights. Opening with ‘HOMME MADE’ Virgil delivers a thought-provoking foundation that traverses from art history to our perception of home. The words draw you in and prepare you for the depth to come from Lupe. ‘DINOSAURS’ “begins at the beginning,” exploring the earth’s previous rulers, painting vivid images of a time that proceeds human existent. The closing bars “Just remember at one time this whole world was theirs” hits hard, reminding us of our short extant. ‘SLEDOM’ flips the script on modelling exploring the ups-and-mostly-downs of the profession with a clever and even humours tone.

The most powerful cut, on the project is ‘SHOES.’ The first verse charts the path of a seasoned sneakerhead waiting in line for the latest drop. As the track progresses Lupe gets deeper mixing class-clashes and race gaps, along with a search for equality. Virgil Abloh provides spoken word breaks envisioning a shoe designed for Ahmaud Arbery, who was tragically murdered while jogging. The words cut deep as he explores the sole (soul), “You know, can withstand multiple beatings by the ground/ But it’s tough enough to continue on, that’s the sole.” This narration seems material at first past, but it’s clear he’s speaking to something much deeper.

Closing things out comes ‘LF95,’ the freestyle over the ripped beat that sparked this whole project off with some fresh additions. Lupe’s bars are as sharp as ever, while Ellis beat is cold yet inviting. HOUSE proves that Lupe Fiasco & Kaelin Ellis are the perfect match. Ellis crafts the perfect soundscapes to serve as the foundation for Lupe’s lyricism. It’s short but expertly crafted, leaving fans hoping this is the first of many collabs from the two artists. For now enjoy HOUSE at home… whatever home may mean to you.

One of SoundCloud’s beatmaking all-stars put forth his magnum opus on Bandcamp yesterday. TEK.LUN‘s album, aptly titled The Oppression Olympics, explores imaginative storytelling techniques (comparable to Carmack’s Rekindling EP) that employ music as a vehicle to deliver messaging that can’t be completely captured in mere words or colorful drum loops. The spectacular project draws from raw samples of the George Floyd protests, free-thinkers, and traditional soulful vocals that pay homage to the cultural roots of popular music. TEK.LUN intelligently weaves this collection of sounds through a brilliant exhibition of his unmistakable production style, pushing the status quo for both genre and emotional experience in the same forward-thinking project.

[bandcamp width=400 height=300 album=124765922 size=large bgcol=181a1b linkcol=056cc4 artwork=small]

Whether it’s the album’s unattainable swing, soul stirring keys, harrowing orchestrations or demonstrative arrangements, The Oppression Olympics defies conventional methods of social activism. Best observed in tracks like ‘Required Chaos II’, ‘U BEN LIED 2 + Never Know (Feat. Varth)’ and ‘Y’all Need to Listen (QUIT YOUR JOB!)’, the project speaks to reality on multiple levels. It whispers the sentiments of racial division, solicits emotional awareness, and scores the intolerance of the modern political climate through mature cognizance. It also fucking slaps, and challenges you entertain new kinds of multi-dimensional thinking.

The project was released on Juneteenth, a celebration of the overdue emancipation of slaves, alongside the POWER BLACK compilation featuring the dexterity of acclaimed black beatmakers including DEFFIE, KAELIN ELLIS, whereisalex, Oshi, jammvis, eu-IV, Kilamanzego and TEK.LUN himself. These creators have dedicated all profits from the sales of both projects towards the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and other organizations supporting the movement. The Oppression Olympics can only be understood through experience, so I’ll leave you with TEK.LUN’s own words about the album and some of my own encouragement: open your mind, your heart, your wallet, and explore ways to help guide the world into a better future for all.

The Oppression Olympics is an instrumental album centered around the divides within the Black community that keep the diaspora from unifying in its totality. Our Black voices are reaching parts of the globe they have never reached before and I could not think of a better time to share this than on Juneteenth, 2020.

I began working on this “idea” back in 2016, inspired by the Audre Lorde poem “There is No Hierarchy of Oppression.” I will again go broke donating a majority of the proceeds from this to various organizations geared toward mental health for black women + a few other foundations I’m currently verifying. Each song has a purpose and I hope you guys enjoy. Thanks for listening!

Love ya
