Apashe is a name that should be synonymous with the words evolution and transformation. The headway he has made in his career is unparalleled. He is a composer and music producer originally from Brussels, the capital of Belgium, and now resides in Montreal. Since stepping into the game in 2008, he has dabbled in a number of different electronic music genres. In the beginning he tried his hand at breakcore and would later go on to make dubstep, neurofunk, electro, trap and more.

Being a first signed to Kannibalen Records in 2011, Apashe would soon become one of the most unorthodox acts in bass music. Diving further into his musical release background, around seven years ago he paired with Snails to fabricate what would be the secret weapon for all trap DJ’s with ‘Bubble Gun‘. Shortly after this we saw the release of ‘Battle Royale‘ where we would be introduced to his signature sound design of using orchestral samples and composition. After this, he went on a huge trap run while tossing in a few other styles of music along the way where he presented authentic trap such as ‘Trap Requiem‘ with Tha Trickaz, bass heavy dubstep like ‘Take Off‘, some bass house, drum n bass and more. Apashe has now shifted back to his his trademark sound with his Requiem EP and The Good The Bad & The Fake EP. Today he is back with a full length 13-track album.

Renaissance depicts Apashe’s SoundCloud bio accurately as it states “The soundtrack to your life if you were a super villain.” It features a variety of collaborations such as Tech N9ne, Vo Williams and Yizzy to name a few. The dynamic of originality on display is exactly the forward thinking contributions the electronic music scene needs. Renaissance is a fusion of hip-hop complexity with passionate orchestral operations, blended with a touch of other soundscapes. This album proves Apashe is perhaps the most innovative composer and producer as he unveils all of his expertise and shows no restraint. If listeners are looking for the next unique and distinctive album and artist, Apashe’s Renaissance should be the first place you check.

Kannibalen‘s Princess of Darkness and Queen of the Dark Electro Underworld, HVDES, releases her latest EP, Stand Alone Complex.

Stand Alone Complex pays homage to one of anime’s more famous stories in the west, Ghost in the Shell. The first song on the EP, ‘Human,’ has an eerie vocal clip that loops throughout describing the contradicting experience of being an android: a biologically human mind driving a manufactured vessel. This tense existence plays out thematically through the track as HVDES mixes industrial synths, fluttering high notes, and pulsating bass.

HVDES partners up with Crimson Child and performs the lyrics herself on the second track of this EP, ‘Ghost.exe.’ It begins with booming bass announcing the arrival of this heavy dubstep banger. As the tempo crescendos, she croons “Peel the skin off my face so that everyone can see, what’s hiding under me/ There’s a ghost in my head, and she’s trying to kill me.” ‘Ghost.exe’ keeps the energy fierce through out with vibrating wubs and nasty slapping snares. A few surprises are tucked here and there, like the meaty first drop, swirling synths of the later, and the lustrous and emotional outro.

‘Akuma’ the last track’s opening is whipped up by a tight, military like snare and quickening tempo. Building tension is driven by the high pitched Japanese vocal sample. This steady banger plays up heavy industrial futuristic elements with dreamy breaks that sync with the soft melody in the background. That’s all bashed against the wall with each heavy drop that crumbles into crunchy bits of bass.

Check out the whole EP below.

Lektrique has some worried with his sudden move from Belgium to Los Angeles where he has been skating the streets, deck in hand, finding inspiration in one of the most iconic cities in the United States. From his wanderings, he has found not just a muse but the ingredients for his most recently conjured EP Black Magic – unsurprising for a member of the Kannibalen label and host of their Kannibalen Radio episodes.

The title track ‘Black Magic’ is a collaboration with Sam Lamar, an artist from Montreal who is totally worth a quick scope if you are into having your face melted by bass. Lamar and Lektrique have found themselves in quite a dark little corner on the track ‘Black Magic’. There is plenty of Lektrique’s rhythmic theatrics that ramp up to the a destructive break-beat drop. This track is more in line with the type of Lektrique we heard on BTSM’s last album, in the track ‘DEATH’- except it has a cool, SoCal-skater edge and playfully dark, horror film voice clips. There is lots of tension, blood-magic mixing really, as the they press twangy, American south-western guitar sounds, against daring operatic vocals, smeared all over a killer-banger foundation.

The second track, ‘Virus’, has that punky, post-apocalyptic vibes we love to feed on from Kannibalen records. There is so much happening in this sound; Lektrique seems to vibrate through each section of ‘Virus’ just like a pathogen ripples through populations. It’s frenetic meandering stays steady with the striking synths, but continuously builds, creating a magic that ebbs and flows through the snares and bass. There is so much energy in ‘Virus’ it will be sure to get you feverishly hyped and ready to dance under the full moon with what may be your rave fam, or your ritual coven, its really whatever the occasion calls for.

Check it out below.

Lektrique leads the attack in 2018 for the Kannifam with ‘Laidback,’ a track that stands out with a throw-back, techno-house banger. Known for casting an air of nostalgia with classic electronic sounds and bending them around ripping bass lines, this Belgian producer’s on tour, just like the rest of his labelmates. See the BTSM Ceremony Tour details here.

‘Laidback’ is surprisingly refreshing, peppered with cheeky vocal samples, but retains the label’s dark feel with a tenacious tempo, and contemporary raver vibes. Plenty of bass and kinky synths make this the perfect sound track for wildin’ out to, and kickin’ it with your crew.

Beginning a new tradition for hardcore bass fans, Kannibalen sneaks this one under the tree just in time for your Christmas rager.

This year’s addition goes just as hard as last year, including tracks from artists that were featured on the first volume, along with some surprises. The eight track playlist is filled to the brim with plummeting drops, serrated synths, and blitzes of fiery bass.

First up on the list is YOOKiE‘s ‘Escape’ and it sets the sinister tone. Their signature growling bass, meaty drops, and virulent rhythmics open up the pit for the rest of the ranks.

Following close behind is Seek N Destroy with ‘Now I’m Here’. A fervor of stunning synths and a charging tempo are blasted with clanging bass, and swirls of raving synth lines. This track packs a punch with thumping rhythms, and salty snares.

Dabin and Apashe team up to craft a remarkable crossbreed, ‘Lillith’ a Sullivan King remix. The track highlight’s Dabin’s git with organic intrumentals, heavy metal’s overarching influence on Kannibalen’s artists’ sound, and Apashe’s ear for cross genres. An impressive and stunning gem of this group that should not be passed over. Sink your teeth into this one but save room since Carbin’s ‘Bad Habit’- his Kanniblen debut-is the tasty dessert to this hybrid with equal parts nasty dubstep and menacing guitar elements.

Another artist that remains elusive, yet leaves his mark- Karluv Klub‘s ‘Cult,’ a filthy contribution to this medley is a brooding, dark-electro experiment, dripping with macabre progressions, jangling build-ups, and convulsing bass. The loose-style production creates space for the mix to feel like a journey through a mad scientist’s lab.

Another artist supporting the tradition is Kedzie teaming up with Superwet on ‘Venom,’ a dramatic scream-o sampling banger. Laced with heavy electric guitar riffs, and super-charged drops this one is super to get you hyped.

Banged up from just one listen, watch your neck during any session with Mantis‘ ‘Moshaholics’. The energy on this one is undeniably dank, and menacing. It fits perfectly as the night-cap to this disturbingly dark delight.

Thank you for making the end of our 2017 bass heavy, Kanniblen. Check out the collection in full below.

In recent years, major labels have been steadily declining in terms of importance and relevance.

In recent years, major labels have been steadily declining in terms of importance and relevance. This shift in tide has carved out a new lane for a different type of label. This new wave of labels are often artist run and act as a way to cultivate talent, break new artists and expand sounds. Nowhere else is this more present than within electronic music. There’s a slew of incredible labels out right now but we decided to hone in on 10 that we feel you absolutely need to know. Check out the list below and let us know we missed any of your favourites.

1. bitbird

Sultan of Swirl, San Holo brought bitbird to crackling to life three years ago. The “create forever” label has since authored over 100 releases, launching the careers of countless artist. Like many of the labels on this list, bitbird’s compilation albums (Gouldian Finch) showcase some of the strongest and most inventive electronic tracks like Taska Black’s ‘Leave Me’ or Ramzoid’s ‘Underwater.’ While many of the bitbird artists showcase much of the same sparkle and radiant chiptune vitality as boss bird San Holo, there’s no questioning the breadth of bitbird’s music electronic arc. Bringing us names like DROELOE, BeauDamian and Araatan is evidence enough that the future is in good hands with this flock.

2. Confession

Despite genre tagging their releases “Dance & EDM” we know Confession as proud purveyors potent bass and heavy house productions. Headlined by the unholy trinity of Tchami, Malaa and Mercer, this French led label brings an abundance of bangers from across the globe including the likes of ANGELZ, Brohug, and Wax Motif. Their Alchemy compilations are a truly masterful mix of all things badass bass. Just don’t take the confession bit too literally or else we might not get another Illegal Mixtape from Malaa. With game changers like ‘Notorious,’ ‘Adieu’ and ‘Bylina’ all coming in the first 2 years of the label’s existence, this star-studded set of savages are sure to continue to make their mark with their mixture of mayhem and madness.

3. Daruma

As a label and artists collective, Daruma bolsters one of the most impressive rosters in electronic music. Their team is littered with FUXWITHIT favourites including Andrew Luce, Electric Mantis, MYRNE, graves, baht, Luca Lush, QUIX, Breaux and many more. In the span of just over 2 years they’ve dropped 10 namesake compilations plus a massive collaborative EP with Mad Decent’s sub-label Good Enuff. Through all of this they’ve helped to break some of the best new electronic artists out and have some big things in the works. Look out for Daruma becoming a heavy-hitter into 2018.

4. Deadbeats

Our hometown heros Zeds Dead turned heads with their first release when they featured Freddie Gibbs on ‘Back Home.’ The big names kept coming as they brought on Diplo for ‘Blame,’ NGHTMRE for ‘Frontlines,’ and how about Rivers Cuomo and Pusha T for ‘Too Young.’ This range was only the beginning for Deadbeats as they brought in more hometown talent in Memorecks, Pusher and Rezz. Not only are they fantastic at fostering young artists, their veteran status has allowed them to bring in some of the biggest and baddest names for some fire remix packages (including the likes of Crankdat, Dirtyphonics and Gorgon City). Since March of last year they’ve had over 73 tracks released to their name and if you find that too much to handle, might we suggest their fantastic new radio show which airs Wednesday nights.

5. Jadū Dala

Philadelphia’s “Magical Music Outfit” is the definition of consistency. Their weekly releases have been blowing minds since May of 2016. Their founders, Nathaniel Kosko and Jesse Babini, started Jadu with the mission “to showcase innovative and experimental dance music,” and there’s no question they’ve accomplished this. With releases like Cozway’s ‘Windbreaker,’ Richfellow’s ‘Rouse’ and IBI.’s ‘Arrival’ it’s as though Jadū Dala opened a fissure in earth’s surface allowing all kind of unknown to escape. Their tracks will leave your head spinning, searching for the repeat button. And it’s not just us at FUX that can’t get enough Dala, their tracks can be found in mixes by Benzi, NGHTMRE, and even Madeon. There’s an undeniable alchemy from this Philly label.

6. Kannibalen

Headquartered in Montreal, Kannibalen Records has made it their mission to bring dark electro to the main stage of the EDM world. Founded by Patrick Barry, Marc-André, and Julien Maranda in 2011 the label has been collecting and unfurling deliciously filthy artists. The same trio comprise the label’s leading act, Black Tiger Sex Machine, which creates super-charged, aggressive bass beats grafted with operatic vocals, militant snares, stinging synths and performs them in signature, LED synced, tiger helmets. The others enlisted to spread the Kannibalen virus are Apashe, Kai Wachi, Dabin, Lektrique, Karluv Klub, Dead Battery, and Snails. Focused on reaching across genres, each artist on this label is known for their genre-bending and potent individuality, preserving the underground vibe, challenging the mainstream, and luring followers thirsty for a hardcore experience. If you need a dose and can not wait for one these artists to come to a festival or venue near you, check out their Kannibalen Radio show hosted by Lektrique, for plenty of their latest releases, and mixes. Infection is inevitable and incurable.

7. LA90

LA90 is the youngest label on this list with just a few months under their belt. What they lack in longevity is accounted for in promise. They’re at the forefront of the experimental bass scene and have released nothing but heat in their sort time. From Jon Casey’s maddening Geneva // Trigger Happy EP to Clockvice’s wild halftime project. Most impressive yet is the single ‘Four Season’ which brought together Holly, Chee, Crimes and Yunis. Add in the fact that they’re founded and backed by Bare Noize and you can bet they’re only going to keep rising. Get up on LA90 before they become a staple in the game.

8. Quality Goods Records

Founded by Trap legend, UZ, Quality Goods Records has been living up to their name since their inception in 2016. Their commitment to finding and breaking new talent in the trap scene is matched by very few (if any). Their roster boasts an impressive list that features Oski, sumthin sumthin, Ian Munro, Tascione, Sfam, UNKWN and more. Standout releases include sumthin sumthin’s brain-bending Afterglow EP and Oski’s massive Kid Chrome and Kid Calamity projects. Most notable of course is UZ’s debut Layers a 12 track trap epic. If you’re looking for forward thinking trap sounds, chances are they’re on Quality Goods Records.

9. Record Record

The double talk name of the label follows the Contrastive Focus Reduplication name of founders Point Point. The four man group of Aazar, LH4L, Devoted To God and Nömak literally and figuratively have their ‘Hands’ all over the delightfully diverse label. Their fantastic Filet Mignon compilation series has hosted their solo efforts as well as the likes of San Holo, Dombresky, Masayoshi Iimori and more. And this is really the key to the success and unquestionable quality of Record Record, the diversity and range not only in artists but in soundscope. They’ve touched on everything from acid and jersey club to garage and bass house. While you never know just what they’re cooking up, you can count on it being of the highest calibre.

10. TWONK

Brillz has been championing the TWONK movement for years but in 2017 he decided to formalize it into an actual label. They came out of the gate swinging with an absolutely insane <del>compilation</del> Twonkilation that featured everyone from Brillz himself to Bro Safari x ETC!ETC! x UFO!, YOOKiE x Holly, Wuki, Lil Texas, Willy Joy, Masayoshi Iimori and more. Keeping the momentum up, Hydraulix’s TWONK debut Madness proved a fitting title. If you like to get weird, be sure to check out the ₩ØƦŁÐ ₩łÐE ₩EłƦÐØS at TWONK.
