There is no doubt that, along with UKG, Baile Funk was the other trending topic this year within the electronic scene. Unlike the former, however, due to geographical and cultural reasons, the general attention towards the Brazilian bass music universe has been largely superficial, almost always only scratching the surface of what this decades-old and extensive scene has to offer. Even leaving aside the controversial ‘Baile Phonk’ situation, especially in the first six months of the year there was a general hype-induced rush by non-Brazilian artists to draw on rhythms and sounds typical of genres and sub-genres such as Favela Bass and Baile Funk. In most cases, the results were often limited to a pale imitation of the original sound and a bland repetition of the most common stereotypes. Don’t get me wrong, I joined in the general enthusiasm too and enjoyed the stream of Baile remixes popping up in my SoundCloud feed.

When I started thinking about this edition of Bootleg Business, I quickly realized that I didn’t have enough knowledge to be able to guarantee a result that had a cultural as well as entertainment value. That is why I decided to take a step back and rely on two real insiders: Chediak and KARAN! You might remember the latter from my review of his MOVADÃO EP while you might be familiar with the former if you follow his label SPEEDTEST RAVE or more probably thanks to his collaboration with camoufly, ‘only1‘. Enough of my chatter, get ready for some serious Brazilian bootleg business, and be sure to not miss Chediak’s extra suggestions you can find at the end of the article!

DJ RaMeMeS – Sexo 3 Completo (Syú Flip)
We released this song as part of the first “ILLEGAL MUSIC” compilation on SPEEDTEST RAVE. It’s a remix of DJ RaMeMes’s “Sexo 3 Completo” that brings it to the D&B world. At the same time, I think the sound design of this one is reeeally techno-y, and the second drop makes sure that we have a great time with it. Every single time this one gets played at any underground rave over here things get a little crazy.

Skrillex, Fred again.. & Flowdan – Rumble (yandrel bootleg)
This bootleg is just MADNESS! Yandrel got the original track and literally made it sound way more nasty and aggressive, really showing the best things of his Favela Bass style and showing how aggressive our Brazilian funk can be!
– K

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1423652296″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

DJ CARLOZS – A FAMA…
I honestly think I heard the original version of ROSALÍA and The Weeknd’s “LA FAMA” just once and it does not sound the same after this DJ CARLOZS flip. I don’t even know what to say about this one, it blends all of the elements I love the most about Baile Funk…the sound design, crazy percussion, and unpredictable slices in samples, this one is really great. I have no idea about what happens in the end of the track also, I think DJ CARLOZS needs to be studied by NASA or something. Also, the cover pic is him with Boys Noize on a baile funk party, such a boss move.

piquezin putão treinado x sam gellaitry (DJ BONNi)
This one is really simple but really catchy, made by BONNi (bonniebrokehearts) who is a really talented artist and really underrated in my opinion! Posted on “NAÇÃOREBOLATION69″, a Brazilian experimental music collective full of insane artists.

“DEUS” [DJ MARSELLO]
This one is a bootleg with many layers, this is a baile beat with the main sample from “13 Angels Standing Guard ‘Round the Side of Your Bed” by Silver Mt. Zion. This, by itself, is already crazy but he also samples ‘Fim de Semana no Rio’ by Teto and replies the sample vocals with his own original vocals that make fun of the original lyrics from the song. The original song says “God will guide me / Deus vai guiar” while MARSELLO is singing the same melody but with “come suck me / vem me mamar” and other classic baile language like “lança”, “sarrada” and stuff. Like I said, it has many layers.

Sade – Smooth Operator (Adame Edit)
Adame picked a classic and added a bit of his flavour to it! Excellent edit, so beautifully done and aggressive at the same time, simply amazing! Adame is insanely talented and also an underrated artist, so make sure you guys go follow him!

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1539966079″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

ANTCONSTANTINO – Orgasmo de Pula Pula
There’s this new sub-genre called “Pula Pula” that artists like ANTCONSTANTINO, Colas, Taleko, Destravalt, and others are spreading over here. It’s like a blend of afrobeat, techno, and baile funk and I think it’s crazy! More people should be trying this style out, I think it’s got great potential. This song is a bootleg of ‘Soundgasm’ by Rema and was recently played by Jarreau Vandal. I was pretty happy when I saw people’s reactions to it on the dancefloor.

Danna x PZZS – Evoque Horse (Mashup – Remix)
An awesome combination of an insane classic song made by Katy Perry and a really good Brazillian funk song by DJ Escobar, MC’s Menor HR and Menor SG! ‘Evoque Horse’ is a mashup between ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘Evoque Prata’ remixed by the talented duo Danna and PZZS! Both are insanely talented and a “must-have” on your playlists or sets, so check them out.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1628558100″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

VIDA LOKA DUB
Racionais MCs are hip-hop legends in Brasil, every single person over here knows at least one song by them and it’s one of those music groups that’s considered untouchable. To remix a Racionais song you need to nail it, so when I made this remix of ‘Vida Loka Pt. 1’ I didn’t even think of releasing it, I thought it was going to be just another bootleg for the DJ sets. People DID NOT give me any peace while I didn’t release this song, and while it still hasn’t reached the ears of Racionais MCs, it’s making waves over here and abroad. Baile Funk was and still is extremely influenced by Racionais and I think their legacy will live forever in many ways inside and outside of music. There’s a great documentary about them on Netflix that I think everyone should watch! ‘VIDA LOKA DUB’ also features a sample from ‘MAROLENTO’ by Puterrier, a Baile Funk/Grime MC that also uses samples from Racionais MCs. The idea of making it Garage/140 was because of the sample, it’s so eery and mysterious…I felt it needed a huge bass and some wubs on it hahaha.

Dennis e Kevin O Chris – TÁ OK ( KOZMO REMIX)
This one is REALLY GREAT! Made by KOZMO, a 14-year old upcoming artist on our scene with a great and unique style of Favela Bass. This kid is definitely the future, and he is just starting, can’t wait to hear his next mad tunes. Crazy stuff!
– K

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1548005044″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

There’s a culture of “dump”/alternative accounts of producers worldwide and here it’s not different, I HIGHLY support everyone to go right now and search for tunes by DJ Tonias, DJ Lukinhas, DJ Dimas and groups like ‘Umild’s do Soundcloud that release bootlegs almost daily, one crazier than the other. For people trying to get more into this underground side of the Brazilian scene, I also recommend following artists like DJ RUANZITO, DJ LD DA FAVELINHA, Adame, rensgo, DJ P7, VHOOR, Deekapz and just getting lost on their feeds, reposts and likes. I don’t know if I can give shout-outs but I’d love to give one to Paul Mond for being one of the few non-Brazilians right now that are really nailing the sound, bounce, and feeling of baile. Love this guy’s flips.

After being featured in the 62nd volume of Focus Five back in May, it’s already time for KARAN! to debut on FUXWITHIT’s main page. As mentioned in the column, If you are here for the culture and not just for the clout that surrounds the Brazillian sounds at the moment, KARAN! and his brand-new MOVADÃO EP will pave the way.

“MOVADÃO is probably the best piece of music I’ve ever made” the just-turned-18 producer says, “I just went crazy on it and poured my anger in all the songs“. Released on Slow Roast Records, the project is composed of five tracks that reflect KARAN!’s interpretation of various styles of Brazilian funk while encompassing elements and influences from plenty of other electronic music heritages. As anticipated directly by him, the result is a collection of furious beats that take the listener literally by assault.

While ‘MOVADÃO’, the opening title track, might sound pretty “classic,” at least for those familiar with this genre sound, it’s just a prelude to the madness that comes right after. For example, the insanity of ‘AKITA’, where a massive wobbling bassline combines with hardstyle elements and Portuguese lyrics, or the perforating synth in ‘KELATA’ which makes the tracks sound like a collaboration between KARAN! and Shangai Doom. The broken rhythms of ‘MOVIMENTA’ deliver the most syncopated piece of baile funk I’ve ever heard while ‘ADENTO’ flirts with abrasive sounds that might appeal to even dubstep and riddim fans.

“I always like to do different stuff, taking inspiration from everyone else. That’s always been the main goal of the KARAN! project” adds the producer, who started the alias at the age of 14 years old, after his friend Klean (the mind behind the infamous Rude Boy edit played at Super Bowl) introduced him to the marvelous anarchy of the SoundCloud scene. “Some tracks were made in days like ‘MOVADÃO’. I made this song way faster than everything I’ve ever made in my life. Others, like ‘MOVIMENTA’, are from months ago. It was made last year and it was supposed to be a single release, but since I wanted the EP to be aggressive and represent the different Brazillian funk styles in my style of music, I just threw this track in there.”

As someone who is completely new to this sound and this scene, I admit I had to recalibrate my approach as a listener and writer to get on the same vibe with the widely different production style of KARAN! and most of the other Brazilian producers I’ve discovered so far. It took a while, but then the fun began. Assuming that it may be the same for many of you, I urge you not to be too influenced by the first listen. Do not fall back into the routine of passive binge listening and indulge in the fascination of active, inquisitive listening: it’s worth it. After all, what is more fun than breaking through the wall of our comfort zone and throwing ourselves into the arms of new, challenging things?

Listen to MOVADÃO below or on your favorite platform.

This month we are highlighting a Brazilian Baile breakout, a melodic mastermind, a gritty deep dubstep standout, a funkified glitch producer, and a stellar future beat creator who we hope is back for good. Get familiar with all five below.

KARAN!

With all the buzz surrounding Baile Funk at the moment, I don’t think you’ll be surprised to learn that this month I’m taking you to Brazil. As we see more and more producers getting their hands dirty with the sound, I believe it’s important to become familiar with those who have lived and breathed this culture all of their lives. Having run into KARAN! twice in the last few weeks, I took it as a sign that he could be the ideal starting point. I came across this 17-year-old producer first through his edit of ‘Get Low‘ (while curating the latest volume of Bootleg Business) and then following the hype sprung around his ‘XENA’ flip (played by the Pangbourne Mafia at their Coachella set and by Skrillex at Red Rocks). Two perfect assists. From dunk to Favela bass, from drum & bass to hybrid heavy hitters, KARAN!’s discography is a fun-filled babel. As he says himself, he “gosta de misturar muito do Heavy Bass com a cultura brasileira em suas músicas para representar seu país,” translated, he “likes to mix heavy bass with Brazilian culture in his songs to represent his country”. If you are here for the culture and not just for the clout, get comfy because you are in for a treat.

We’ve seen the resurgence of 140/deep dubstep happen in front of our eyes over the past few years, and it would be criminal not to mention Leo Cap at this point. Hailing from Russia, Leo Cap has become a true culture pusher over the years. First releasing all types of drum and bass from jungle to neurofunk under his alias Black Barrel, the Russian native then unleashed his 140 sound with the Leo Cap project only four years ago. Since then his sound has become one of the most sought-after in the whole genre. Recent releases like ‘Free Your Mind’ really showcases what Leo Cap and 140 is all about, with a heavy focus on percussion groove, creative sampling, and wicked sound design all lending a hand in making Leo Cap an artist we just have to watch.

Beyond the music, if you’re reading this as a producer or a DJ, subscribing to Leo Cap on Patreon is a must. With Leo Cap’s dollar dub package, you get multiple Patreon exclusive tracks every month for only a dollar. After reading this make sure to check out his recent mix for Deep, Dark, & Dangerous.

Ooga

I don’t quite remember how I got to following Ooga on SoundCloud and on Twitter, but boy am I glad I did. Boasting a sound that, as he describes, “fuses funky rhythms and soul-satisfying instrumentation,” Ooga’s brief yet impressive discography makes him an artist that I am excited to continue following. Since his earliest works, such as his remix for Mirror Maze’s ‘Isekai,’ the Bay Area-based producer has shown a knack for groovy riffs and catchy bass, giving hints of the early works of Koan Sound and Culprate. More recently, Ooga shared his debut What Make It Work EP, where each track further displays his keen attention to detail in balancing funk and electronic music. A personal favourite from the collection is ‘Rawthentic,’ as the artist dives deep into neuro vibes without omitting a natural musicality. Be sure to keep an eye out for Ooga.

orange tales.

Illusive and relatively unknown, Los Angeles-based orange tales is one of the few artists in recent times to convert me to fandom off a single track. The melting colors in the artwork and the fact that it lives on the always impressive Destinuna made ‘like that’ an instant play. Utilizing familiar grime vocals, an effortlessly smooth bounce, and euphoric textures makes the cut feel like an elevated day party amongst the clouds. It’s beautiful, banging, and addictive. What more could you want? A deeper dive into the artist’s back catalog shows a major gap in release spanning back almost 4 years. Don’t let the time off discourage you, the Bloom Child released ‘Dream Bells’ is a summer-ready bop ripe for the picking. Melodic and fun-filled, the track plays like a summer daydream, where life is just too easy. If you’re looking to truly drift away ‘calm skies’ plays out like a melancholy lullaby. With a strong back catalog and a stellar release marking their return, we’re hoping orange tales is back for good.
