Kenny Mason is at his best when he’s getting straight to the raps. No-nonsense cuts like ‘Rih’ and ‘Fasho’ put Kenny’s lyrical abilities at the forefront. The former pairs a haunting and bass-heavy hypnotic backdrop as he goes off with lyrics like, “My partna’ pop a Perc’ and pick off a person/ I can spot ’em lurkin’, bitch I’m alert/ This choppa crop a perfect picture in person/ Fuck a copper, cop a pistol and murk him/ Cobra Kai, I kick this shit ’til it hurt ya/ Buy my bitch a pistol before a Birkin.” The razor-sharp flow and punches prove that the Zone 3 artist can go bar for bar with the best out. Not fully convinced? Listen to him do more than hold his own alongside Denzel Curry & Freddie Gibbs on ‘A+’ and ‘Much Money’ respectively.

Fans of his aggressive rock-leaning style will love the guitar-heavy cuts ‘Pay Ball’ and ‘Pup.’ Further broadening the sonic palette, Kenny gets even more experimental and downtempo on ‘Titan’ and ‘Breathe Again.’ Despite moving between genres the sonic atmosphere remains consistent throughout Angelic Hoodrat: Supercut with a dark and gripping sound carrying through. The bars are hard, honest, and raw. It’s a fitting follow-up that showcases Kenny Mason’s immense potential.

The first album was full of hard classic rap beats and flows but UNLOCKED 1.5 is all about the vibes. It starts off with Robert Glass and Smino giving their R&B take on ‘So.Incredible.pkg.’ Robert Glass’s vocal-heavy production was the perfect match for Smino’s smooth bars, giving just the right balance to Denzel’s more aggressive style.

Sángo also adds his soulful stamp to ‘Pyro,’ now featuring Atlanta legend, Kenny Mason. Curry’s raps over the Soulection producer’s beats create such a unique contrast. Kenny Mason joins the two for a verse, landing exquisitely-rhymed punches.

Another name we’ve been watching closely is Jay Versace. We were hyped to see him on this album as he remixes ‘Lay_Up.mp4a.’ The beatmaker is known for getting inspiration from his ancestral roots and creating musical conversations through his music. His rendition of the track utilizes haunting soundscapes to form a framework for Denzel Curry’s storytelling.

We can’t go without mentioning ‘DIET_1.5’ with Benny The Butcher. The track is the only one on UNLOCKED 1.5 that doesn’t feature a new beat, but instead, the Griselda rapper takes on the first verse, referencing current events and applying acute wordplay to share his experience in the rap game.

JID kicks things off with a gritty hook that’s ripe with fire wordplay. After a short verse, Atlanta’s newest rising star Kenny Mason commands our attention with, “Ran outta milk, mixed some water with cereal/Ran with the killers and most of ’em serial/Run up on dealer, go di-di-di-digital/No face to pin it on, no Rey Mysterio,” as the beat is pulled back. Tongue twisting raps follow suit as the beat drops back in amping up the energy. As IDK makes his presence known, the backing changes once more, providing a spiritual foundation for his opening before getting back to the familiar knock. With bulletproof bars like, “I’m milkin’ the game, every bar is a titty/I fuck up the system, I work it like Missy/Your money is iffy, your peoples is filthy/You takin’ them shots but they all seem to miss me,” IDK proves he’s not to be outshined. For many, Kenny Mason first caught attention with the single, ‘Hit,’ which more or less keeps the classic Atlanta platinum formula intact. But among all of the other songs, ‘Hit’ is placed near the end of the project, giving way to the idea that Mason’s priorities rest more in shining outside of the mold. Even in ‘Hit’, Kenny Mason explores the song concept with a variety of fun samples, grouped vocals, flow variations, and ear-pleasing departures from the minimum expectation.

Across the album, this is a pattern, wherein Kenny Mason pushes for more rather than less, chasing conceptual spaces with a ranging barrel of voices custom-suited to each track. Some may see Kendrick in the creative approach and decisions, but my mind went to Childish Gambino’s Because The Internet as a slightly closer comparison in terms of what it offers.

There’s not just one influence that is clear in Angelic Hoodrat, however.

If you dig Isaiah Rashad, 21 Savage, or Cousin Stizz – this album’s more traditional moments like ‘Chevron’, ‘Once Again’, ‘Angelic Hoodrat’, ‘PTSD’, and ‘Hit’  are worth checking out. For melodic tracks more aligned with the fusion of hip hop and the grunge/punk, any of the rock-infused portions of songs like ‘Metal Wings,’ ‘Pretty Thoughts,’ ‘U in a Gang,’ ‘Handles,’ ‘Pretty Thoughts,’ or ‘Anti-Gravity’ are dynamic choices just for this. Even between the heavy rock and the dark trap, there’s plenty of moody tracks between these two points…’Lean,’ ‘Angels Calling,’ and ’30’ both play well into the hands of the Drake’s early RnB dabblings.

Kenny Mason’s beat selection here bounces between a few different corners, but it’s an impressive range in his vocal performance that really meets the beats head-to-head. The arrangement on Angelic Hoodrat is in a class of its own and Kenny Mason’s lyrical ability and range show great promise for the future career, so long as he continues toying with the balance between the many ideas he chases.

This project is highly recommended to any who closely follow Spotify’s Rap Caviar or Clout Culture playlists who may just be looking for something a little bit more abstract to bump.
