This album was about us finding our place in dance music, which probably sounds weird coming from a band probably classified as a dance act. Rather than ‘jump up and down festival music,’ we wanted something more for the dark club. We are hesitant to use the word ‘mature,’ but we’ll just go ahead and say we want it to feel more mature. We wanted a lot of groove, loose feeling but driving drums, syncopation, an overall tribal feeling, a more global sound, 808s, orchestral and synthy textures; all things we love. We wanted it to be a mix of pop songs and instrumental songs and moody interludes that all feel like they come from the same place. We wanted it to be dramatic and fun. ‘Take It Off’ is a great follow-up to A Beat Tape For Your Friends. Jam-packed with fun, carefree vibes and a strong female vocalist taking front and center—it’s just one of those tracks you can both sing and dance along to. It’s definitely more pop-centric than most of KNK’s discography, so it might not be what the die-hard trap fans are wanting. But it’s just so catchy that I can’t stop listening to it. And I know everyone is tired of the COVID references, but ‘Take It Off’ dropped in perfect timing. As life is getting somewhat back to normal, we’re finally able to get physically closer to people and as the song strongly suggests, take it off.

This release is so important, not just to me, but to the whole industry. It really sets precedence for everyone in the community to actually practice what you preach. And I’m proud to say Keys N Krates aren’t just loud on social media about what they believe in—they’re also using their art to make the world a better place.

Flips Vol 2 is full of funky fire. The trio produced groovy bootlegs of 3 iconic songs: Zhané’s ‘Hey Mr. DJ,’ Frank Ocean’s ‘Solo,’ and H.E.R.’s ‘As I Am.’ The last time they dropped a flip pack was in June of 2020, at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests. At that time, they also donated all of the proceeds to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. In both of the flip packs, they’ve given to a good cause and they’ve highlighted some of the greatest Black artists in our lifetime.

It conjures feelings of nostalgia and warmer weather. and is sure to be a hit. The summer feels continue through into ‘Do What You Do,’ a soulful instrumental hip-hop record. The title track and the later featured ‘Harps at Night’ both serve as stunning emotional interludes that bridge the gap between varying sections of the album.  ‘Glitter’ brings a poppy RnB feel while ‘Flute Loop’ gives the OG fans one hard-hitting banger to sink their teeth into. ‘Something Wonderful’ is just what the title suggests, a mystifying effort that is dripping with optimism. The project closes with ‘My Night’ a darker and impassioned finale.

Cura sees Keys n Krates exploring a wider array of sounds than ever before. Somehow they manage to do so without it ever feeling forced or unnatural. It’s fresh, but also distinctly Keys N Krates. It flows exceptionally well from start to finish, switching the vibe several times over without being ever disjointed. All too often producer-based albums sound like a couple of EPs smashed together, this is not the case for Cura. Producers take notes.
