Kumarion has been pretty busy in the past months. He released a collaborative EP with Smoakland on Deadbeats, co-headlined the eponymous High Rollers national tour with them, and played a set at Red Rocks as invited by Ganja White Night, plus, in the incoming weeks he’ll bring his signature bass sound to Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and even in the UK just to name a few. Even if his explosive debut in the scene happened just three years ago, at this point it’s completely unnecessary to spend words to present Kumarion. With a true coup, he stole the spotlight in 2020 but far from being a one-shot sensation, since then he has carved out a solid place for himself in the US scene through a series of remarkable releases and a clear-cut vision. His dedication to the promotion of the drum&bass world in the US has naturally led him to be one of the most influential and sought-after voices in this regard. This is precisely why we reached him out for a chat about his most recent experiences on the road, his latest EP, and his first thoughts about this year’s festival season.

First and foremost, I need to know your reaction when you saw Tiesto ripping drum&bass on Ultra’s Mainstage earlier this year.

It was surprising to say the least; For a mainstream tastemaker to drop a jump-up tune at one of the biggest dance events in the US says something about the trajectory drum and bass is headed in here in the US.

it definitely is making actual waves here albeit it’s still not nearly as massive as I would like it to be (yet). Good things take time to grow!

This episode, though stand-alone, fits into the larger framework of the 2023 festival season where seems D&B is having a more widespread and structured presence than in years past. Is it just a (social media-induced) perception or is it indeed happening?

In my opinion, it definitely is making actual waves here albeit it’s still not nearly as massive as I would like it to be (yet). Good things take time to grow!

What was your experience playing Red Rocks and what did you hear from your friends who DJed at EDC?

It was amazing. I think it was the right moment and the perfect time to introduce some faster music to the crowd. I think people are starting to like the change in pace.

Everyone smells it in the air, and that’s what matters at the moment.

Looking on a more local scale, how did the High Rollers tour with Smoakland go? Is there a nourished network of D&B promoters across the country or is it still a largely virgin territory?

I’d say the majority of the promoters we’ve worked with are still new to drum and bass, but are very enthusiastic about helping push the sound to new crowds. Everyone smells it in the air, and that’s what matters at the moment.

Which tracks turned out to be the fan favorites on the road?

I’d say my ‘Dominate’ bootleg has done a lot of damage on the road haha.

Off the High Rollers EP, ‘Worth All The Wait’ is the song that most departs from the “classic Kumarion sound.” Can we expect more liquid-oriented projects from you in the future?

Most likely! It’s just a matter of finding the right vocalists to work with or it depends on my mood while I’m writing.

It’s okay to let go and let the creativity flow. Run with the ideas that work and to never force anything!

Name one (production-related) new thing you learned while creating this EP alongside Smoakland.

It’s okay to let go and let the creativity flow. Run with the ideas that work and to never force anything!

Let’s switch from music production to music curation. As a key figure in the US drum&bass scene, do you see the space for the birth and establishment of an equivalent of UKF in the States?

Anything is possible! I certainly wouldn’t mind.

You own the infamous DnB for Dummies playlist: name three d&b gems from your that collection that everyone should know.

‘Neverafter’ by Justin Hawkes, ‘Wait For Me’ by Subsonic, ‘Wavelength’ by Levela.

Any plans for a Kumarion album on the horizon?

In the works as we speak :)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/1620429085″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

Despite making a name for himself outside of the drum and bass world, Kumarion has quickly evolved into a drum and bass heavy-hitter while continuing to make waves across various realms of the electronic music scene. In parallel, Smoakland have championed a distinct sound that harnesses the energy of old school dubstep, while simultaneously harvesting a drum and bass facet with their Liquid Smoak side project.

Following a joint tour that kicked off in late March, Kumarion and Smoakland now join forces on the three-track High Rollers EP, released via the coveted Deadbeats. A powerful, adrenaline-fueled release that’s guaranteed to captivate dance music fans, High Rollers features three sonically different tracks that encompass a range of styles and that come together nicely into one cohesive project. ‘Worth All The Wait’ featuring jELACEE is a smooth liquid jam that uses soothing vocals to complement the light-hearted nature of the track. Kumarion and Smoakland venture into jungle territory with the project’s titled track, ‘High Rollers,’ peppering the project with more energy than its opener and further showcasing their technical skills. Finally, ‘Fluxuations’ lends a halftime hand to the lively project, as the artists slow down the tempo but not the intensity.

Don’t miss the High Rollers EP below.

Festival season is slowly creeping upon us and with the holidays ahead, spending money on passes is probably the last thing on your mind. Maybe you’re going to ask for tickets from your family this month or maybe you decide you want to treat yo’self. Whatever you do, you have to think fast before Okechobee 2022 prices rise at midnight! Once the lineup came out, everyone was hype as fuck. Names like Tame Impala, Megan Thee Stallion, and Flying Lotus filled the headline slots, and that alone should convince you to go. But we have to be true to ourselves and talk about all the other acts you might not know about yet. So without further ado, here are 10 undercard acts you need to listen to before you head to Okee.

1. DJ Minx

If you love dance music, you have to see the legendary DJ Minx. Hailed by publications like Mixmag and Festival Insider as one of the most important names in dance music history, this Detroit techno DJ helped pioneer the culture we know and love today. She even uplifts other women in music with her record label, Women on Wax.

2. Saka

Hong Kong native Saka has been one of our favorite producers for years, with us heavily covering his music since 2019. The producer’s ability to bring us bass music in such an explorative fashion has proven time and time again why he’s one of the greats of our time.

3. Rome In Silver

You don’t need us to tell you why you should go to the Rome In Silver set. We talk about him way too much. Just do it.

4. A Hundred Drums

World bass producer A Hundred Drums has been absolutely killing it, so if you don’t know her name already, you’ve been sleeping. The Deadbeats signee has been seen at huge festivals like Coachella, Tribal Gathering, and Burming Man, and most recently, she supported Rezz at Red Rocks. Experience it in real life as she showcases her love of reggae, dubstep, and psytrance.

5. DUCKWRTH

We’re not entirely sure why DUCKWRTH’s name is so small, but we’re glad to see it on here nonetheless. The LA-based rapper/singer-songwriter is super versatile, not only in his sound, but also in his reach. His talent landed him collaborations with fashion brands like Paul Smith and Fila, and placements on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and HBO’s Insecure.

6. HoneyLuv

From NCAA basketball player to one of the hottest names in house music, HoneyLuv is someone you should know about. Making a name for herself in under two years, she now has a residency on LP Giobbi’s ‘Femmehouse’ series and pops up from time to time on Desert Hearts and House Nation. This year, she even peformed at EDC Las Vegas.

7. Ross from Friends

One of the most unique names in dance music right now is Ross from Friends, but the producer has been around for years. The London-based beatmaker grabs elements from so many genres, it’s honestly hard to put him into one category, so you’ll just have to go and hear it for yourself.

8. Heidi Lawden

If you want to have a real rave experience, go see Heidi Lawden. The global DJ has been at it for almost a decade, telling fans you can normally find her at “dublab.com in discos, deserts, and darkened warehouses.”

9. Kumarion

Kumarion has been a tour de force in the bass community, praised for being one of the names speerheading the drum n bass boom in the States. However, we can’t deny that it was his Jadu Dala release ‘(Give It To Me Like I) Want It’ that got everyone’s attention, and we even named the track in our top 50 of 2020.

10. Lab Group

Super-trio Lab Group is made up of some of the biggest names in US bass music right now. Made up of heavy-hitters Charlesthefirst, Supertask, and Potions, each producer also has a solo set at the fest, but this is one you won’t want to miss. There wasn’t a live set or mix example I could find, but their self-titled EP did come out back in July.

It’s time to gather around and witness greatness. With Kumarion‘s single, ‘Want It’ blowing up everywhere, it was imminent to predict there would be a remix EP honoring the original. And now it’s finally here! You definitely don’t want to sleep on this explosive package of talent. This specific project showcases some of the hottest new underground talent out there.

Artists such as Guppi, SØMETHING, Xotix and much more have taken up the challenge to tackle this great anthem and sprinkle their flare onto it. Each musician gave it their all and showed everyone what they’re made of. From trap, house and even drum n bass, they not only served the original justice, but also the genres themselves. One artist in particular who really caught our ear was SØMETHING’s remix. Adding his groovy trap rhythms is a perfect execution when working on this. His deep bass leads cut through the competition in style. Turning it into his own club heater. Him and all the others were perfect choices.

The Want It remix EP has a ton of gems and ear candy laying deep inside. Containing surprises around every corner. This and the original song will go down as one of the most memorable underground electronic tracks of the year. A beautiful push for the movement no doubt. Do yourselves a favor and check out this group of remixes and see which ones you’ll be addicted to. We’re excited to see what’s next for Kumarion as well as Jadū Dala.

Kumarion’s ‘Want It’ is most likely one of the songs that would be in every DJ’s set during the festival circuit this year if we had them. It’s rocked a ton of livestreams in lieu of festivals, and should be on everyone’s list of top tracks of 2020. The jaw dropping synths, crazy vocal chops, and smoothness of the original isn’t enough to satisfy us though. We need more. So Kumarion is here to try to save 2020 with the VIP of ‘Want It’, that dare I say, outdoes the original.

In the beginning, you are hit with the classic melody from the original, adding a heavy nostalgia sending you back to the first time you heard the original track. What’s different this time is the rolling, thunderous drums that give this VIP a faster, more aggressive tone that carries all the way to the drop. We all know the drop on the original, and I honestly didn’t think it could get much better than that, but Kumarion somehow has found a way to turn it to 11. Kumarion has reworked the drums so they pack a whole lot more punch throughout the track and the original lead that you know and love has been abducted and has become a wiggly, extraterrestrial vibe that will blast your face away with no qualms. The second drop still focuses on those amazing vocal chops, with the synth piercing through with more noise, and it’s as gritty and dirty as ever.

Kumarion’s ‘Want It’ really put him on the map for a lot of people, and with the VIP, he’s about to be making a whole lot more noise.

Check out Kumarion’s ‘Want It’ (VIP) below!

Ascending both above and beyond the forward-thinking sounds of today’s well-saturated bass market is Seattle creative, Kumarion. A front runner for the next wave of artistic greatness, Kumarion continues to captivate the scene’s curiosity with his never-failing display of design expertise. Today, the Washington native offers an undeniably addictive listening experience at the hand of his newest release, ‘Stuntin.’

“While writing this track, I attempted to combine different elements of genres that I love. This track is meant to be a flex all in good fun!” – Kumarion

With an unmistakably fresh character, ‘Stuntin’ is a distinctive representation of the artist’s musical diversity. Sitting at just over four minutes in duration, the flex-worthy track operates fluidly with massive precision. Utilizing the vocal phrase, ”Started from the bottom now I’m stuntin like a big timer, ” the record boldly combines contrasting hip hop elements with Kumarion’s signature grit. Released via Play Me Records, ‘Stuntin’ provides an edgy yet nostalgic swagger alongside a familiar Kumarion-standard complexity.

Bass-heavy sound design enhances the track’s already infectious and rhythmic aesthetic, displaying all the components one could expect from bass culture’s most sought after up-and-comer. A blend of several genre inspirations, the track carries an unorthodox half-time structure, although a mood this unique may be best interpreted outside the confines of labeling. In the exceedingly positive talk circulating the emerging artist’s discography, ‘Stuntin’ further solidifies what music fans may already understand regarding Kumarion’s technical and creative capabilities.

More often now than ever before, we are witnessing modern creatives proudly redefining traditional music structure, proving some of the most successful works of art are created outside of standard genre labeling. Seattle visionaries Levitate and Kumarion collectively emerge at the forefront of today’s hyper-creative society, delivering their newest collaborative piece ‘Can’t Escape.’ In merging the creative capabilities of both artists, the track is an impeccable blend of multiple sound influences and models a precise execution of sound design.

Accompanying the collaborative track is an exceptionally illustrated promotional video and artwork fashioned from the ingeniously diverse mind that is Levitate. He elaborates on the creative process from which the track was birthed.

“Omar (Kumarion) and I trade music, WIPS, ideas and things like that. When he showed me the WIP for ‘Can’t Escape’ I think that was the first time in a long time, I heard something that made me drop everything I had going on and dive into a project. I love that kind of sound and vibe, it was too dope. Something about the way that industrial percussion mixed with the bass and vocals was just right, not aggro-blown out like an arbitrary sounding banger, it was a song that I had to finish. Not at all because I didn’t think he could but because it resonated with me so deeply, and I’m so glad he let me do so. Also, the process of making the fulltime DnB part at the end was extremely fun as well, we just sat together and hashed it out, everything worked as smooth as butter, creatively.” – Levitate

Sitting at just over four-and-half minutes in duration, the introductory portion of ‘Can’t Escape’ successfully channels an ominously-toned aesthetic with the use of Levitate’s haunting vocal performance. An eerie elucidation of one’s insatiable need for escape, the distorted lyrical arrangement maintains a sinister experience throughout the track’s entirety. Unconfined by conventional song structure, ‘Can’t Escape,’ operates richly and fluidly before advancing into Kumarion’s alluring interpretation of drum and bass arrangement.

“This track makes you feel like you’re stuck in a boiler room and you can’t escape. The cymbals and the white noise in the background sound like pipes letting off exhausts. It kind of really sets the theme. Levitate did a fine job of representing that in his artwork as well. I think we nailed the vibe we were trying to achieve.” – Kumarion

To say the track is a seamless depiction of both Levitate and Kumarion’s technical skillsets would be an understatement. It is melodic, grim, sentimental, and lush all at the same time. Needless to say, ‘Can’t Escape’ further solidifies the notion that one does not need to remain within the bounds of an excessively-organized framework to invent an artistically compelling piece.
