As if 2020 wasn’t harsh enough, Logic gave us one week to prepare for his retirement with an announcement on social media with No Pressure. “It’s been a great decade. Now it’s time to be a great father,” he says. Out now on Def Jam, Logic takes to his pen to talk about his journey in rap music. The album is full of heart and soul, which is the perfect way to leave his legacy. The album was created over the course of one week in collaboration with No I.D., but apparently only one week was needed for these legends to create this masterpiece.

In each song, the rapper talks about his experience with the come up. He expresses his struggle with people wanting to bring him down and dealing with the pressures of fame. In ‘No Pressure,’ he says “People telling you to stay in your lane, can’t even drive/ Tell you not to chase your dreams ’cause they chained to a nine-to-five.” In ‘Hit My Line,’ he talks to God directly, asking him for guidance on how to navigate through everything. ‘They say they don’t want messages in rap, it ruins the art/ Well, here I am, people, yeah, now tear me apart.”

While most of the songs on No Pressure detail the rapper’s trials and tribulations, he also takes time to give thanks for his blessings. He pays very evident homage to Kanye West in two commemorative songs: ‘Congratulations’ and ‘Heard Em Say.’ Even without knowing the background of these two songs, you can absolutely pick up the old Yeezy vibes. And believe us when we say, it definitely made us miss the old Kanye.

Logic then uses the last 2 songs to thank everyone for his career in music. Throughout the album, the Maryland native uses samples from Orson Welles: an actor, radio host, and political activist. In a HardknockTV interview for the record, he said this is because, “That was very important to me — to utilize and idol of mine in the art world — and use his voice as though it’s mine.” He used an excerpt from one of his radio shows that is powerfully parallel to what’s going on today with police brutality and the response of Black Lives Matter.

No Pressure is potent and empathizes with the listener, making it easy for us to empathize with the rapper. While we’re sad to see him go, we’re thankful for all the music he’s given us and wish only but the best for Sir Robert Bryson Hall II and his family. We’re hoping the retirement is only temporary…

I fell in love with Logic during his Young Sinatra mixtape run. His incredible lyricism, impeccable flow and 90’s influence lead me to write an article naming him the Best Rapper Without An Album Out in 2014. When his debut dropped it was one of the best rap releases of the year. But since then, his projects just haven’t hit the same way. Whether it’s the fact that they’re overly conceptual, redundant in subject matter or packing too many radio singles, Young Sinatra seemed to be lost inside Logic’s evolution. Bobby Tarantino gave us flashes of greatness but many early Logic fans still dreamed of hearing him return to the boom-bap, real rap shit. Proving to be in tune with his fans, Logic returns with YSIV.

YSIV sees Logic returning to his roots in the best way possible. On the aptly titled ‘The Return’ the emcee spits, “Fuck a mumble let’s make America rap again, industry don’t give a fuck about rap or what’s happenin.'” And that’s more or less what Logic does across 14 tracks. From storytelling (‘The Glorious Five,’ ‘Street Dreams,’ ‘Last Call’) to pure onslaughts of bars (‘YSIV,’ ‘Everybody Dies’) to swagging out on ‘ICONIC’ YSIV is a reminder that great rap still matters. It’s a project for hip-hop heads that’s still accessible without being overly commercial. I mean he really did, “assemble the Clan like Voltron” on ‘Wu Tang Forever.’ If that’s not doing it for hip-hop, I’m not sure what is. YSIV is the Logic album we’ve been waiting for since Under Pressure, and I couldn’t be happier that it’s finally here.

The track sees him picking up where the Young Sinatra series left off, going in over a classic (‘Bring The Pain’). The two minute flow is a lyrical barrage reminding fans why Logic is one of the best emcees out. From start to finish it’s dripping with quotables and wordplay, all while showcasing his incredible flow. Here’s a little sample: “We snappin’ like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, I’m talking Achilles/Try to play me like I ain’t me but I provided all the deets/Who you know worth $50 million still rapping on breakbeats?/From Nasty Nas, Big L, Tribe, the Roots, and many more/Of course, we could never forget Biggie and Young Shakur”

As an added bonus, Logic also announced his new album Young Sinatra will drop September 28th while promising he’s “bringing the boom bap back for the Rattpack.”

A few years back we named Logic the best rapper without an album out. When he dropped his debut Under Pressure he only proceeded to impress. But since his debut, his sound and style evolved in a direction that began to lose me. His message of peace, love and positivity became overt to a point that it started to feel contrived. His concepts went from original and exciting to corny. With his surprise mixtape Bobby Tarantino in 2016 Logic brought it back to the basics with snapping beats and tight bars. This week he dropped the sequel to Bobby Tarantino and I’m happy to say the Logic I fell in love with is back!

Bobby Tarantino II sees the return of mixtape Logic, where his impeccable flow and lyrical talents are perfectly matched over snapping beats. Nearly every track hits hard enough to rinse at a party but with sharp lyrics layered throughout. Whether he’s addressing beef on ‘Yuck,’ trading verses with 2 Chainz & Big Sean or mellowing out for a smoke break with Wiz Khalifa, Logic feels right at home. The most impressive feature on the project comes from Logic himself as he slips into his Young Sinatra persona. Longtime fans will be enamored as his rapid fire and wordlplay take you back to 2011 and remind you why Logic is one of most talented emcees in the game. Bobby Tarantino II is the Logic I want to hear. You can’t go wrong with raw skills and great production and that’s exactly what you’ll find here.

Although a large portion of my writing tends to focus on electronic music, hip-hop and rap have always been my first love. I fell in love with the genre 20 years ago and it’s one of the few things that’s remained constant over the greater part of my life. One of the elements that always made rap so special is the storytelling aspect. A good writer can bring you into their world and take you on an epic adventure. To celebrate this dimension of the art form, I’ve put together a playlist that showcases some of the greatest storytelling rap songs of all time. The list ranges from raw street tales, to emotional and personal. We’ve got songs that personify the genre as a women, take you into the mind of a terrorist, and follow a dollar bill. There’s classic cuts from the likes of Warren G and Nate Dogg, Ice Cube, Slick Rick, Nas, Common and Biggie. Underground favourites like Apathy, Louis Logic and Cunninnlynguists. And of course, we’ve got tracks from some of the best new artists like J. Cole, Kendrick, Vic Mensa, Logic and Your Old Droog. Noticeably absent from the list in Jay Z. This is due to the fact that his music isn’t available on Spotify or he’d have a ton of entries on this.

Fans will be elated to hear that Logic is back with a new single which also happens to be the title track off upcoming album Everybody. The track is rooted in race; from Logic exploring his biracial upbringing and roots, to a hook that reminds listeners that we are all the same. It’s what we’ve come to love from Logic – lyrically sharp and thought-provoking with an underlying positivity. Stream ‘Everybody’ below and be sure to watch the album trailer as well. It looks like we’re in for another dope concept album on May 5th.

As 2016 draws to a close you know we had to end the year by highlighting the best songs of 2016. As you’ve come to expect, this year’s list contains a broad array of musical styles and genres. We’ve got everything from ignorant turn-up bangers to thought-provoking, socially conscious hip hop and everything in between. The countdown continues today with 30-21 and will continue throughout the week, ending on Friday. Check out our selects below and be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

30. Baauer – Kung Fu (ft. Pusha T & Future)

From bedroom producer to one of the most highly regarded beat makers in the industry, Baauer continued to impress in 2016. Everything Baauer touches is assured to be excellent, so having him connect with Future and Pusha T was a guaranteed smash. Sure it’s another coke record but the combination of Future’s infectiousness and energy, Pusha’s razor sharp bars and Baauer production made it something special.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/248700408″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

29. Logic – Wrist (ft. Pusha T)

Logic’s work ethic is impressive and he only continued to prove that with the release of Bobby Tarantino. Leading up to the release of the commercial mixtape, Logic dropped ‘Wrist’ featuring G.O.O.D. Music President Pusha T. As you can imagine, 6ix produced a banger that Logic and Push flowed over effortlessly telling tales about their hard work and success. The lyrical prowess and delivery from both of these cats is something that is admirable and impressive.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/270436734″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

28. Destructo – 4 Real (ft. Featuring Ty Dolla $ign and ILOVEMAKONNEN)

Destructo has become the ambassador of the G-House genre. With the assistance of Ty Dolla Sign and ILoveMakonnen he crafted the G-House anthem of the year. It’s catchy, upbeat and well produced. Despite dropping in the winter, it instantly made it feel like summer (or Winter in LA). Additional remixes from Drezo and Joyryde made it a staple in every major DJs set and kept it alive and well for the bulk of the year.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/243244020″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

27. DJ Khaled x Jay Z x Future – I Got The Keys

2016 was DJ Khaled’s year. Known for being a “connector” Khaled flexed his immense buzz to put together some of the biggest collabs of 2016. For ‘I Got The Keys,’ Khaled managed to put together one of the year’s hottest rappers in Future, with greatest of all time (Jay). The track will serve as a time capsule, playing on the full catalog of Khaled’s signature lines. Even the hook is a double entendre that references Khaled’s ‘keys’ while tilting its hat to Jay and Future’s drug dealing pasts. Hov verses are few and far between these days and seeing him stunt on a trap record with his signature swag was truly some special cloth.

26. Travis Scott – Pick up the Phone (Ft. Young Thug and Quavo)

Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing Brian McKnight was one of the best albums of 2016 and leading up to the release, Scott blessed fans with this banger right here. ‘Pick up the Phone’ is a trap banger that mixes in steel drum samples to give it a dancehall vibe. Thugger and Quavo really shine on the track with their respective verses and Travis Scott adds the element that’s perfect for when you’re trying to turn up in the club.

Quavo" width="1170" height="658" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mZDinQ92OZQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen>

25. Knife Party & Tom Morello – Battle Sirens

Knife Party and Tom Morello thrilled fans with the jaw-dropping and drool worthy banger that hybridized the thrashingly dark genre of bass music and heavy guitar. This demonic anthem was 2016’s Frankenstein-ed dubstep/guitar lab experiment that the mad scientists felt they could no longer keep quarantined. ‘Battle Sirens’ was performed by both collaborators at the Ultra Music Festival on September 30th 2016, and fans never thought they would see the day that rock and trap could be bred to form such a beast. With over one million views on YouTube, Knife Party and Morello can say that their creation has certainly reached the masses.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/281977967″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

24. Mura Masa – What If I Go

Mura Masa is an absolute genius. Connecting with frequent collaborator and tour mate, Bonzai, the two managed to create a record that embodies both the feelings of a perfect summer day and true love. It feels like the best day you’ve had with your significant other, while knowing that it will only be topped several times over in the following years. It’s a magical blend of pop, R&B, hip-hop and future bass. When it comes to fusing those things together, you’d be hard pressed to find a song that tops ‘What If I Go,’ in 2016 or ever.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/251904713″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

23. A$AP Ferg – New Level (Ft. Future)

At the top of the summer, Ferg dropped ‘New Level’ to support his Always Strive And Prosper album featuring Future and the track did not disappoint. Future kills the joint with his flow and Ferguson hypes the track to a whole new level (Ooh-Ooooh!). The beats dark and eerie vibe combined with the high energy hook and verses come together perfectly to make this trap banger into a summer anthem.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/260313662″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

22. Tory Lanez – Luv

Tory Lanez went from homeless to hitmaker in what seemed like a year even though he had been successful for many years prior. While his debut album I Told You was prepping for release, Lanez dropped his now Grammy-nominated dancehall influenced club banger ‘Luv’. Sampling Tanto Metro and Devonte’s ‘Everyone Falls in Love’ on a beat produced by Cashmere Cat and Benny Blanco, Tory delivered one of the most well known tracks of 2016. The dancehall influence really took hold in 2016 with many artists using elements of the genre in their music – specifically beats but also including their lyrics and delivery. Bringing new life to a classic hook, Tory Lanez found himself with his first major league hit and a spot on the Top 50 coming in at number 22.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/267135343″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

21. Kanye West – Real Friends

Kanye’s The Life of Pablo was backed by a couple of single’s, one of which was ‘Real Friends’. With some assistance from Ty Dolla Sign (who sounds great on this record, btw) Kanye walks us through the troubles of being famous and trying to deal with people who call themselves his friends. On this brutally honest and telling track, Ye opens up about friends (insert air quotes, ha) hitting him up for money, stealing his laptop, calling on him for outlandish favours. The production is reminiscent of Kanye’s 808’s and Heartbreak era and the honesty is something we haven’t seen from Kanye since his earlier days.

Every time I go on SoundCloud to look for mashups of popular songs, I can never find anything that is up to par with my expectations. But after some digging, I finally found a match. He goes by the name of AVSTIN JAMES and his mashups are nothing short of excellence. If you are looking for a solid combination of two hits then he is your man. You can discover his obscurities on YouTube, and they are most definitely worth checking out. What amazes so many is that he is only 18, meaning if keeps working at it, the sky’s the limit. His ear for music can really be seen through the simplicity and quality of the mashes. He picks a song and a beat, then begins to mesh, and that is it. The kid is destined for greatness and I will be sure to follow his work into the future when he produces his own beats. I will now let you enjoy, what in my opinion, are his three dopest mashups. Additionally be sure to check out some more of his most recent tracks on his YouTube channel.

AVSTIN JAMES – ‘Back 2 All (Drake X Manila Killa)’

James’ unique ability is very noticeable in this track. I could not imagine a better beat to mash with this song, and it is truly astounding that he picked up on it. He not only mastered the beat but he has also picked key lyrics that ultimately make it easier to sing along.

AVSTIN JAMES – ‘Backseat XE3 (Kendrick Lamar X Wheathin)’

Consisting of classic Kendrick and Wheathin’s disgustingly dope beat, this mashup never gets old. Nothing is better than jamming to this one in your car, preferably alone so you can bring out your inner Kendrick judgment free.

AVSTIN JAMES – ‘We Rise Alive (Logic X San Holo)’
