The devastation of the Australian wildfires has been widely reported over the last several weeks. From the staggering number of animals succumbing to the fires, to the people affected and homes destroyed, it’s been an absolute disaster. In an effort to help those affected, five of Perth’s finest producers have banded together to create a benefit record aptly titled ‘INFERNO.’ “We live in such an incredible country and it’s really upsetting to see it burning away. We’re sending our love and support from West Australia but know that money is desperately needed,” Fletcher of SLUMBERJACK states.

The track sees Slumberjack, ShockOne, Twerl, HWLS & Loston coming together for a work that’s nothing short of epic. “There is so much emotion in the song and that’s exactly what we wanted the listeners to feel, how much emotion there is in our country right now over what’s happening,” Twerl explains. He’s certainly not overselling it. ‘INFERNO’ is one of most moving and impactful electronic records in recent time. Leveraging samples from news coverage, the track reminds listeners of the intense reality being faced in Australia right now. Add in haunting vocal bends, somber undertones and intense drums and the intro is gripping. The drops hit hard, powerful enough to go off at a festival or club, but packing so much more within them. Poignant and powerful, ‘INFERNO’ is a political statement, a work of art, and a great way to help a country in need.

How does a collab this massive come together? “Well originally Scott (Loston) had a benefit show planned in Perth, where a bunch of creatives were going to come together for a show to raise as much awareness and money as possible but unfortunately it couldn’t go ahead. So I thought, why don’t we all get in the studio for a giant collab to raise some money? So that’s exactly what we did. Scott also did some amazing artwork and made a fkn dope shirt that will be available to purchase too, all profits for that will be donated.” Twerl tells us. He expanded upon the charitable efforts saying, “Proceeds will be going to Red Cross Australia. They were chosen because they are a reputable charity organisation who’ve operated over 100 years in Australia. On the Bandcamp $2 will get you two versions of ‘INFERNO,’ but you can actually donate as much as you want. Any little bit helps! We thank everyone in advance for your support in such hard times, it means a lot to a lot of people.”

Stream ‘INFERNO’ below and donate to download and grab the merch here. If you’re looking to donate further, head over to the Australian Red Cross. Australians tend to loosely use the term legend, but Slumberjack, ShockOne, Twerl, HWLS & Loston are bloody legends for this one in the truest sense.

A few years ago we wrote an article that highlighted some of the brightest up-and-coming talents in Australia. Positioned firmly on that list is Loston. After a trail of incredible remixes, a few stellar originals and a collaboration with Ta-Ku, it seemed like he was about to be Australia’s next big musical export. But at the height of his hype and excitement he nearly vanished. Months passed without any new releases and fans began to wonder if Loston had given up on music. Months stretched into over two years without a release, but we’re pleased to announce that his return is imminent. Taking two years away from the limelight is no easy feat in music, especially in today’s climate. But as Loston tells us, “these things take time.” He spent the last 24 months reflecting on the type of artist he’d like to become and writing music that is truly meaningful. The music is finally done and is almost ready for fans. His first single ‘Disappear,’ will be dropping January 24th and his EP Echoes will follow shortly after.

We had the pleasure of connecting with Loston for an exclusive interview to get a taste of what’s to come. He talks in detail about his time off, his plans for the future and takes us inside Echoes. Check out the full interview below and be sure to watch the teaser video for a deeper sense of what to expect.

“I had options to do EDM tours and could have easily churned out some generic big build drop type of shit, but that doesn’t excite me, and at the end of the day it’s pointless doing this unless you genuinely love what you do.”

It’s been over two years since your last release. Why did you take so much time between your releases?

These things take time, I took a lot of time to really decide what I wanted to put out, putting out my debut original release, I wanted to make sure that I open the door to make the music that I want to make. I had options to do EDM tours and could have easily churned out some generic big build drop type of shit, but that doesn’t excite me, and at the end of the day it’s pointless doing this unless you genuinely love what you do.

I wanted to put out a record that I was genuinely happy with. Coming off the back of putting out predominantly remixes and reworks I was kind of left with a blank canvas, and that sometimes gives you too wide of a playing field to be definitive.

There is well over an album’s worth of material sitting on my hard drive at the moment, and this EP is acting as sort of an introduction to what’s to come.

When we spoke last, you mentioned that you do most of your production at night. Is this still the case? If so, do you feel this influences your sound?

Perhaps, I think the more prevalent factor is isolation, I can only work on music alone and in a non-distracting environment, so I think that informs the sound a lot. It’s sort of the soundtrack to that, frustrating at times, and other times serene. It’s easy to express yourself to yourself in those moments, but putting it on record and releasing it for strangers to pick apart is the biggest hurdle.

Echoes packs a very moody feel. Can you talk about the emotions and events that inspired it?

A lot has happened to me personally over the last 24 months and I think that definitely informed the mood of this release in a lot of ways. Someone very close to me is fighting a serious illness and that definitely has given me a forced perspective on mortality and the idea of everything being finite. The songs probably bounce between hopeless and hopeful.

I try and write by creating sonic environments and sort of letting things grow from there rather than trying to pin point any particular mood initially. It’s like when you have an argument or heavy discussion with someone, at the end of all the words you have a greater understanding of how you were feeling subconsciously, but it was too clouded by frustration to be understood at the time.

I think all the songs have their own mood and point, but that for me could only be discovered in hearing them as finished pieces of music. I had no idea what they were going to be during the writing process.

“It’s like, write some music, send it out to such and such, get some faux heartfelt generic vocal back, whack it on top and fire it off to Spotify. I need a connection to the final product in order to express myself properly, and generic toplines from people I have never met just doesn’t do that.”

The project has you singing and sampling your own voice. Can you tell us a little bit about this process?

I became disillusioned with the way that “producer driven music” is put out. Not even that, I think I just became disillusioned with the whole process. It’s like, write some music, send it out to such and such, get some faux heartfelt generic vocal back, whack it on top and fire it off to Spotify.

I need a connection to the final product in order to express myself properly, and generic toplines from people I have never met just doesn’t do that. I started recording my own vocals and chopping them up, utilising them as instruments rather than toplines and found that I could really express the emotion of the song without being too literal.

I think this release is pretty much a snapshot of the last couple of years for me. That’s what a record is meant to be, almost a journal of the period of time in which it was written.

The sound of the project is almost anti-EDM. Did you consciously decide to move in this direction?

I try not to think about it too much, the music I had released previously was representative of where I was at that time, and this is an extension of that. I have always put more emphasis on the mood than the beat.

I think this release is pretty much a snapshot of the last couple of years for me. That’s what a record is meant to be, almost a journal of the period of time in which it was written. Its self-expression using the means that you have at your disposal, not trying to write music with consideration for where or how it is going to be consumed.

When I was writing music at the start of the Loston project, the stuff I was doing was representative of where I was at the time, I was spending a lot of time working in and around clubs, driving home listening to The National and Foals in the car.

Echoes closes with a cover of ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World.’ Can you speak to the significance of this song as the finale?

That song meant a lot to me growing up, my dad used to play tears for fears a lot and I always sort of thought of that as a happy song. I spent a stupid amount of time practicing and sort of re-learning the piano over the past 18 months or so, and I had written the piano part of the song and had just adapted to singing the first few lines of ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ over the top of it.

When you crop out the rest of the song, it really has this hopeless message. This is how it is, you can’t change it, and everything you are is going to be exposed. It’s terrifying and freeing at the same time, depending on how you look at it.

I kind of paraphrased the last line to work with the general aesthetic but what is the point of re-imagining something if you don’t take some liberties.

“The way we consume music now is a fucking joke, there has never been less real connection between the listener and the artist. I wanted to put together something in lieu of that, so it’s basically a visual representation of what the record is to me.”

Along with the release you’ve produced an accompanying zine. Can you tell us a little bit about this facet of the project? How does it tie in with the music?

There are no liner notes anymore. I used to buy records as a kid and sit there studying the layouts and stories through the booklets. The way we consume music now is a fucking joke, there has never been less real connection between the listener and the artist. I wanted to put together something in lieu of that, so it’s basically a visual representation of what the record is to me. Something tangible that the listener can connect with rather than a song popping up on your new music playlist and then disappearing into the distance as the next generic shit fades in.

As a visual artist do you approach making music from a different standpoint? Being that you’re a graphic designer and musician do the two things ever inspire each other?

It’s all in the same wheelhouse. I mean it’s all based on connection and finding ways to convey a message through aesthetic. It’s a painful process sometimes though, because I will work on a visual project and then try and square away some time to work on a music project and there is very little time for the creative side of your brain to switch off. Lately I have been trying to switch off a lot more, which feels counterproductive to both of those processes but is actually the best thing for it. I took 2 weeks off of everything over xmas and read a couple of books and laid in the sun, hung out with my girlfriend and family. I think it’s the first time I have completely switched off from any foe of work for years. Burning out creatively is a real thing, and I certainly need to make sure I make time in my life to literally do nothing, otherwise I’ll end up on the mental ward.

Does the release of the EP signify the full return of Loston to music? Should we expect more music, tours, etc. in the near future?

Definitely, I want to tour this EP and really get in front of people. I also have a bunch of new music ready to go, which I plan on putting out consistently over the next 12 months.

It seems the relationship has further developed, as today the two have unleashed a new collaborative track. ‘No Reason’ opens with a calm backdrop and emotive vocals. As the two add in instrumentation the track takes a gentle progression before opening up to a more full sound. The vocals are simple but infectious and the song perfectly illustrates why Ta-ku and Loston are masters of delivering auditory feels.

FUXWITHIT: Australia has become well known for its upbeat and cheery future bass sound. Your production is far more emotive and breathtaking. Is this done consciously?
Loston: It’s not really a conscious effort to make anything sound any type of way, I guess it is just the way that music makes sense to me. I have never been a big fan of happy positive music, the things that I gravitate towards have always been the more emotive and uplifting type of artists. I’m a pretty happy person, so it is certainly not a representation of my demeanor.

FUXWITHIT: In addition to producing, you’re also a graphic designer. How do you balance the two?
Loston: I work for myself, and have a design studio in Perth, which sort of doubles as a music studio these days. I don’t really balance them at all, I just do what needs to be done. I mainly work on music at night, so I’m rarely home, I finish up a day of design jobs and then just play around with music. It’s good because I felt a bit burned out with design for a year or so, and the music stuff has really helped me creatively across the board.

FUXWITHIT: You recently worked on Create and Explore. Can you tell us about the experience?
Loston: Yeah I got to work with my best friend on that project. I had the song already written, and it was actually meant to be on a rap album that was coming out on Fool’s Gold. That ended up dragging out too long and I wanted to do something with the song, so I played with a bunch of vocal samples and got it to where I wanted it to be. Ta-ku and Matt Salisbury hit me up and asked if I would be interested in doing the Create and Explore project, so I reached out to Adam Borrello and we started discussing visuals. We have worked closely on a bunch of design and photography projects over the years so it was a pretty smooth transition. He ran with it and put together an amazing visual to the song, we both traveled around a fair bit getting different types of footage, but he certainly creatively directed the visual side of the project. It was his first real journey into video too and he nailed it. I couldn’t be happier with the final product.

“I would sort of just wake up in the morning and listen to whatever was open and be like, fuck, I do not remember that.”

FUXWITHIT: I read that you produced ‘Too Much’ while on heavy painkillers. How did this alter your creative process?
Loston: Yeah, over here they prescribe you Oxycodone for anything. I busted my hand up really badly and was on like 2 of them every 4 hours for about 4 months. I wrote a bunch of shit that I don’t remember writing. I would sort of just wake up in the morning and listen to whatever was open and be like, fuck, I do not remember that. I got in a bit of a trap with that sort of stuff for a little while, because it definitely is a shortcut to a creative place, but I have since found a bunch of different ways to write that don’t involve prescription narcotics.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/121927423″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: You recently had your first live show at Origin NYE in Perth alongside artists like Baauer, Cashmere Cat, Hudson Mohawke, Chase & Status and more. What was the experience like?
Loston: Yeah it was really cool, I was on just before Cashmere Cat on the main stage, relatively early in the day. I wasn’t expecting a huge crowd, but it ended up being rammed, was pretty overwhelming to see how internet plays translate into actual people coming out to check out your set. Was definitely a dream first show, really well put together festival, things got pretty hectic. It was new years…

FUXWITHIT: Are you planning more live sets in the near future? Is there a tour in the cards?
Loston: Absolutely, I’m very particular in which shows I go with, because I definitely don’t want the live side of things to take focus away from writing. Origin was an amazing experience, I’m looking at a few other festivals within Australia and Asia over the next 12 months. At this stage I am playing pretty in-depth DJ sets, but as the EP comes to conclusion I will be adapting the whole thing into a much more live show. I have been collaborating Adam further, putting together visuals for the DJ sets. There is generally infastructure available to really create an experience that is visually exciting as well as sonically. Realistically, I’m not the ‘jump on the riser yelling at people to put there hands up’ hype guy type, so having that visual element to back up the music makes it more interesting for everybody. Don’t get me wrong, I could just play an hour of bangers and yell at people, but it sort of wouldn’t make sense with the sort of music I’m doing. I’m pretty mindful of that shit.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/175437120″ params=”color=0066cc&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: How do you compare djing to producing music?
Loston: For me they are totally different processes. How the song will translate in a live or performance setting does not have any influence on the writing process. I tend to try and write as organically as possible, so it sort of works against me in a live capacity. I have been djing partys without a moniker for a few years, so I am totally comfortable in that setting, especially mixing together other peoples music. Putting together the DJ set for the first show was a lot of fun though. Essentially I try and put together an hour long mixtape of what I enjoy, very non subtly showing a bunch of influences, then I break all the edits down into individual songs and DJ it like that. I would probably fall asleep if the set was too laid out.

“The blogs need the artists as much as the artists need the blogs.”

FUXWITHIT: You’ve received a lot of support from blogs over the past year. How important is blog support in music right now? How much has it impacted your career?
Loston: I have been really fortunate with the blogs, they really are essential in getting your music out to people, rather than just being another drop in the ocean. There are really a lot of cool people who are just big fans of music that run these major blogs, it’s really refreshing to receive emails from people who’s blogs you have followed for years, reaching out to see if they can feature your music. It’s so liberated these days, these blogs are as independent as a lot of the artists they push, it really is a coming together of people who have a passion, collaborating. The blogs need the artists as much as the artists need the blogs. I think it is a really positive thing.

FUXWITHIT: Earlier this year you had your ‘November 18th‘ remix removed from SoundCloud. What are your thoughts on the changes that have been implemented on the platform?
Loston: Yeah, it just sort of disappeared and there was an email in my junk folder. The last 16 of that song was so tight, I still have it somewhere, I want to expand that whole section out into something for a live set. I’m pretty new to the whole platform to be honest, I only joined up to post songs about 18 months ago, and I owe it a lot, so I can’t really throw too much shade on them. I imagine they are probably up against a lot of industry pressure to take certain things down.

FUXWITHIT: What is your ultimate goal when creating music?
Loston: You can bang your head against a wall with a particular section or vocal or loop for what seems like an eternity, then it suddenly comes to life in a few seconds and the whole song grows from that tiny piece of inspiration. That is the only thing that I really chase, that is the main enjoyment I get out of music, is the process of something going from being mediocre to good. I want to keep doing this and chasing that and see where it takes me.

FUXWITHIT: What can we expect in terms of releases for 2015?
Loston: I’m working on so much stuff at the moment, I have 2 tracks coming out on Nicole Millars release (album, ep?) which I’m really really happy with. I have been working with a really talented vocalist called Adria on a track that is almost finished. I have a beat on Bryant Dope’s upcoming release, he is from Queens and was on that huge Vice/Hudmo cypher that came out late last year, and also 100s who is on Fool’s Gold. I’m working on an Adventure Club remix as well as a Safia one. And I have pretty much written a whole EP, which I’m going to release later in the year, I’m just really carefully selecting what to put out. I’m still working full time as a graphic designer and have a bunch of other shit on the go, so it’s all getting pretty busy, but I’m really enjoying every aspect of my life at the moment so time management isn’t a big stress.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/164649714″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FUXWITHIT: You previously had stated that you had no interest in making an EP, what changed your mind?
Loston: I decided last year that rather than releasing an EP I would stagger releases every couple of months so that people were getting regular content, rather than releasing 4 songs at once, as I felt that people are more likely to get a full appreciation for the music if they have a while to listen to the tracks individually rather than being given too much choice. I also wanted to make sure that I had built an audience before putting a release out, so that when I was ready I could put out a full body of work to the people that are already listening and expand from there.

Also, now that I have started playing live shows, an EP is a good thing to be able to tour, you need to play to the industry in some respects, I certainly try to do things as independently as possible, and on my own terms, but I feel it is time to actually work on a cohesive project that I can put out.I really want to tour the world and showcase my music to larger audiences, it’s quite funny because the SoundCloud side of things has definitely blown up, I’m about to hit over 2 million plays, yet there are still a whole lot of people that are completely unaware of Loston. Touring is definitely a big part of that, so putting together something tangible that I can actually tour is definitely a good move at the moment.I have been mindful to stay true to my own vision of the music, and not take too much on board from labels and management who have certain ideas of where the project should go, so at the moment I am just shut in a studio, showing very few people what I am working on, so that the final product is as organic as possible.

Well known for its exotic wildlife, great waves, beautiful beaches, and that unforgettable Simpson’s episode, Australia is now becoming well known for something else; its output of amazingly talented and inventive producers. With Knife Party, Flume and What So Not clearing the way, Australians are making big moves. It seems like every other time I find a great new producer they are hailing from the land down under. Whether it’s coincidence or there’s something special going on down there I’m not sure, but check out our list and decide for yourself.

Wave Racer

Wave Racer was the first producer on the list that I ever encountered. I have to admit, I wasn’t really familiar with Future Bass at the time and his sound absolutely blew me away. It’s upbeat, inventive, fun and inconceivably happy. It’s difficult to listen to one of his songs without smiling. After checking out his SoundCloud his ‘The Dofflin’, ‘Stand Still’ and ‘Always’ remixes were instant favorites. His unique sound was truly game changing and has influenced a wide range of artists across the industry and likely a few on this list. This year he released the radiant tune ‘Streamers’, and saw him and Ryan Hemsworth remixing each others work. He also managed to drop an official remix of Foster The People’s – ‘Best Friend’. Aside from making music the producer has spent some time touring Australia, North America and Europe, and is set to accompany Chromeo on their Frequent Flyer Tour. He’ll also play Mad Decent’s Boat Party in November. 2014 has been a huge year and it’s only getting bigger. Follow Wave Racer on Facebook, Twitter and SoundCloud.

My introduction to Sable was his Feel So Good EP. Aptly titled, the 5 song project combined elements of Future Bass, Jersey Club, and House for a sound that is immensely cheery and seriously sexy. ‘Foolin’ and ‘Feels So Good’ are my personal favorites. Considering it clocks in at just under 20 minutes it definitely deserves a full play through. Keeping sexy in mind, his rework of ‘My Luv’ is guaranteed to have dropped panties around the world. Mixing things up, Sable recently released the Pokemon inspired ‘Mt. Moon’ trading in the seductive and serotonin inducing melodies for a grimy bass epic that’ll have you mean muggin’.
If you’ve been sleeping on Slumberjack, it’s time to wake-up! The Perth based duo has had a huge year, dropping some of the most originals tracks out. Just listen to ‘So Sweet’ and try to make sense of what you just heard. Actually don’t, just enjoy its awesomeness. Likely their most well known tune is ‘Felon’. A wonky, bassment certified banger that also includes gorgeous piano work, ragga vocals and a multitude bass. If you’re a fan of Mr. Carmack or What So Not this’ll blow you away. If you’re looking for something a little lighter don’t worry, their collaboration with Sable ‘Sprinter’ is straight Kawaii bliss. And you can’t talk about the duo without mentioning their anthematic ‘Touched’ edit (listen below). SLUMBERJACK has proven their ability to make a wide variety of mind blowing music and they’re just getting started. Be sure to keep up with them on SoundCloud, Facebook and Twitter.

Much like the glorious life source, his music warms you up, fills you with positive energy and beckons you to make the most out of your days. His best release is a toss up between ‘Slow Burn’ and his remix of Crooked Colours ‘Come Down’. The former features a melody so infectious and delightful that you’ll be humming it for days off just one listen. The latter is a perfect blend of Future Bass and Club elements that’s guaranteed to have you grooving. Finally his remix of Paces ‘Leave’ is a tropical themed tune that’s the perfect accent to your summer playlist. It’s been a little while since we’ve heard new material from Palace but we can’t wait to hear what he’s got in store!
Loston is probably the most out of place on this list. Don’t misinterpret that, he’s definitely deserving of his spot, it’s just that his sound is very different from majority featured here. While Australia is becoming known for its cheery upbeat sounds, Loston makes music that is airy, emotive and breathtaking. His soundscapes conjure images of gorgeous rocky coast lines rather than sunny sandy beaches. Every track he’s put out has been impressive. From his reworks (‘Too Much’, ‘Waiting Game’, ‘Retrograde’, ‘November 18th’) to his originals ‘Next Exit’ and ‘Drown’, everything he touches is sure to give you some serious feels.
Leon Osborn

Hailing from Fremantle, Leon Osborn creates music that is truly unique and unpredictable. His most recent project Nature Strip has him fusing ambient sounds, smooth melodies, hip-hop vibes and lush bass. The result is a fresh sound that’ll take you to a completely unfamiliar zone. My favourite work is ‘Vinson Massif’ which utilizes militant snares, hazy vocal loops, and deep bass hits, all while drifting between states of calm and intensity. Other standout tracks include the zoned out ‘Perito Moreno’ and dream-esq ‘Sleeping Bear Dunes’. If you’re feeling the vibes be sure to check out Leon on SoundCloud and Facebook.

Basenji

Basenji is another artist who has the keen ability to take listeners completely away. His debut song ‘Speak With A Dofflin’ is nothing short of spectacular. It takes you off the shores of Australia into an underwater fantasy world where you feel you might be able to do just what the title ensues. Dolphin samples, epic synth builds, and uncharacteristic drops make this track truly something else. ‘Tribute To The Cat’ is unsurprisingly reminiscent to the sounds of Cashmere Cat. What does impress is how good this song actually is (I’m sure Cashmere Cat would be pleased to have produced it himself). If you’re feeling those two tunes then ‘Dawn’ is a can’t miss. To close things out, his latest release ‘Heirloom’ is a sun-drenched, smooth record to bump on the beach.
Dugong Jr.

What truly made me a fan is his remix of Kid Ink’s ‘Sunsets’, which in my opinion is one of the best songs of the summer. It’s an infectious, melodic rework that is the perfect soundtrack to cruising on a summers eve. With synth soaked remixes of Gudu, Miami Horror and Kilter, Dugong Jr is right at home on this list. Keep up to date with him on SoundCloud, Facebook, and Twitter.

That’s it for our list. Bear in mind this is only a sample of the great music coming out of the overly talented nation. Be sure to let us know your favourite selections or any artists who you think we missed in the comments below. Also be sure to bump our A Trip Down Under playlist which includes a ton of tunes from the artists featured on the list.
