Last month, Louis Futon blessed us with the masterpiece that is Couchsurfing. The way the LA-based producer is able to find the perfect balance of modern and vintage sounds, there’s no doubt this album will stand the test of time. It’s the ideal medley of electro-soul, funk, and hip-hop and the artist managed to bring together artists from all over the music scene to collaborate. Whether he’s teaming up with incredible rappers like Armani White, iconic producers like Bad Snacks, or doing it all himself—as per standout track ‘Ms. Intentions’—Couchsurfing is a one-of-a-kind album that the musician holds close to his heart.

Been doing great! Turns out it was just stomach acid that was causing chest pains. It was crazy to see all these messages coming in from people who had similar health scares. Health is wealth.

Relief. I feel this physical release in my body and my mind whenever I release new music, it keeps me moving forward. It’s been great seeing the positive reception towards it as well.

At a certain point in time, I was just sitting with 20 or so tracks that I felt like couldn’t go together at all. But I thought “What if I could actually tie these all together and make it flow like a journey”. So that’s when I started all the transitions between tracks and actualized the project itself.

Yes. My friends didn’t make me pay rent, so in return, I would buy an ice cream cake for them every Sunday with a different funny message drizzled on it each time. Kinda became a tradition.

You gotta trust your gut and go with the flow. There are going to be uncomfortable and confusing moments, but if you let yourself go through it your future self will thank you.

I caught one of the featured artists on the record, Armani White, performing as a secret special guest at a Good Society show in LA. And I know you’ve actually worked with both of those names before. I notice when you work with someone, you usually continue to find other capacities to continue a collaborative relationship with them. Is there any reason for that?

When I find someone who I love to work with in the studio AND hit it off on a personal level, we stay in each other’s lives and create a lasting relationship. This usually results in new musical collaborations, but it doesn’t have to. Armani and I really get each other because we know our relationship goes beyond music.

There’s nothing like LA. Access to the most amazing musicians/studios in the world, jams happening almost every night, and of course the weather. No plans to move back as of now, LA definitely feels like home.

Louis Futon begins the record with hip-hop and r&b-influenced beats from intro track ‘Crashing’ to ‘Something Strange Is Happening.’ Things pick up with psychedelic ‘Miami’ and ‘Funk Off’ which are reminiscent of beatmakers like Daily Bread and Pretty Lights. We hear our first feature from gospel vocalist Lavance Colley on ‘Turn It Up,’ which ends up being a sexy soul tune that’ll get your heartbeat racing. He continues the tone throughout the record, with instrumental-led production, bringing in horns and woodwinds to elevate the album to a level of artistry we can only appreciate to the highest degree.

I’ve always felt like a creative nomad. It’s hard for me to commit to one style because i’m naturally enced by so many different genres. I wanted to lean into my creative spontaneity and create a project that not only covers the whole spectrum of sounds I like to make, but also feels connected.

The collaborations on the album were definitely standouts for us. We previously reported on ‘Re-Up’ with Armani White, which he dropped earlier as a single from the album. Louis Futon also brings on Bad Snacks and Rob Araujo for the dreamy ‘Sunday Morning,’ which will eradicate Sunday scaries solely by listening to it. quickly, quickly comes on for the majestically cinematic ‘Northeast’ before Louis Futon ends the project with a hopeful ‘This Beautiful World.’

We can’t forget to shine a light on the composer himself. Louis Futon showcases his all-encompassing talent on ‘Ms. Intentions.’ Not only did he produce the song, but he’s also the singer-songwriter on the catchy tune. While Louis Futon first garnered recognition for his nostalgia-inducing remixes of popular songs (just look at his most popular tracks on Soundcloud), the producer has proven that his original tracks stand on their own. And he also shows his versatility by being a great hip-hop beatmaker, constantly working with rappers in a way that most electronic music producers don’t get right.

‘Re-Up’ can show you exactly what I’m saying. Although Louis Futon is great at bringing the 70s to the modern age through his soulful melodies, he instead teams up with Armani White, staying true to the rapper’s sound and showcases his craft. I don’t think that it detracts from who Louis Futon is as an artist, but instead shows what magic can be made when there’s authentic synergy between two musicians.

Louis Futon says, “Re-Up is a song we wrote together in my mom’s basement a couple years ago. Contrary to living in my mom’s basement however, this song has swag. It has a pocket that makes you want to bounce and bob your head throughout the entire track. It has a dark tone to it that we had a lot of fun exploring.”

But if you’re looking for something that’s more true to the Louis Futon signature sound, side B of the single, ‘Amoeba’ has you covered. It works with ‘Re-Up’ due to its hip-hop beat integration, incorporating rhythms reminiscent of Elaquent, and adding funky horns and strings throughout.

The song started off with me sampling my guitar strings as a percussive instrument leading into an intricate drum pocket paired with a plucky bass. I wanted to make something that takes you through an epic journey.
