Authentic, fervent, genius, and family oriented; these are all words that accurately describe Martin Staaf, better known by his artist persona Liquid Stranger. When one contemplates which members of the bass music underground are pushing the sound and ethos at the very heart-pulse of the community, Mr. Staaf surely sits atop that list. Curating arguably one of the most impressive labels in the entire game right now, the illustrious and idiosyncratic Wakaan, Staaf leads the charge in propelling only the most experimental of sounds to the eagerly-awaiting ears of all his die-hard fans. His 30 track LP, Infinity, was released last year to raucous applause, showcasing each distinct type of sound this miraculous human being is capable of forging. He has once again graced the music realms with another unparalleled release, coming in the form of the 6 track Ascension EP, a perfect Valentine’s Day gift to the masses.

A psychonaut is defined as “a person who spends time exploring the universe right inside their own head. Usually with drugs, yoga, or meditation. This person is on a quest to discover the self, and usually can be considered a realist.” Liquid Stranger’s ‘Psychonaut’ is the perfect introduction into Ascension, setting the tone for the sonic voyage your consciousness is about to undergo. The beat builds into into a zipper-like monstrosity of a sound, almost like the unraveling of the mind that a certified psychonaut would experience at the beginning of a psychedelic experience, before reaching the brink of insanity that is the first drop. The opening notes are reminiscent of what one might expect to burst forth from an organ in the holy church of grime, both startlingly and exquisite at the same time. The tell-tale immaculate cleanliness that is Liquid’s production is readily apparent, and is even more-so highlighted later in the song when the initial fiercely intense energy cools and is replaced with a much swampier aesthetic, with more emphasis on each individual sound. The song ends with a speech that sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie stating “As the space time continuum shatters, the laws of physics no longer apply. While the body can be protected by a suit, the mind is left open and vulnerable. Only certain specially gifted individuals are able to complete the journey with their sanity unscathed. We call them, the Psychonauts.” Strap in, this is only the first of 6 tracks.

‘Ascend’ continues your journey upwards, a step towards the euphoria and elation phase of self discovery. The opening melody is goosebumps-inducing, creating a beautiful, warm electricity around the perimeter of your body. You’re greeted by immensely soothing, calming vocals, before continuing back on your bass-filled adventure. The energy takes a sharp turn, and Staaf’s signature wonky creativity is once again thrusted to the forefront. The string instrumental section that drifts you away to the end of the piece is exceptionally beautiful, creating an introspective aura that makes time slip by just a tad bit slower. The melodies of ‘Ascend’ are lush, rich, and perfect accents for the entire rest of the song. Prepare yourself for a true bass music symphony experience.

For as long as Liquid Stranger and Luzcid have been flying together under the Wakaan flag, it’s almost shocking to realize that they didn’t have a collaboration up to this point. Meet ‘Hammer,’ the answer to all that have been asking for it. The vocals “crank up the power” lead you up to the first drop, your excitement reaching peak levels. Staying true to its name, ‘Hammer’ hits borderline-unhealthily hard. A veritable sonic weapon, the low-end rumbles the earth between your feet. This piece strikes with such ferocity it could easily be mistaken for Thor’s trademark accessory, a mighty tool only to be wielded by the absolutely worthy. If the first drop wasn’t enough, the 2nd is even more primal in nature, featuring tight switches and a beat that touches down on the trappier side of dubstep, a definite blast to get buck-wild to.

For years, Australia’s Hydraulix has been a consistent player in the underground and a sure force to be reckoned with, and his collaboration on Ascension ‘Laser Burn’ continues this trend of successful frequency manipulation. Wasting no time getting into the thick of things, the hip-gyrating beat is hand-delivered almost from the opening seconds of the song. The sound calls to mind a much cleaner and amplified version of coins you left in your pants’ pocket hitting the inside of a dryer, and if you weren’t already aware, it slaps. An instant banger, the first drop is full of sound-wave sass, bursting with so much character it practically hops out of your headphones. The laser samples sound like something straight out of Star Wars, leaving you half expecting a Chewbacca, R2D2, or baby Yoda to be neatly tucked in along the way. This track is a joy to bust a move to, and will bring out only the happiest of expressions.

Sami Diament, formerly known as the lord of all things twonk, Brillz, continues one of the most successful artist rebrands that has occurred in the community with his rebirth in the form of LSDREAM, now pooling his enlightening efforts with Liquid to gift us ‘Sunken Technology.’ The combination of these two artists’ styles is a true treat on the ears, bursting with vibrations that mentally stimulate the listener to sheer delight. It almost seems as if the ‘Sunken Technology’ that’s mysteriously muttered about is a machine that promotes healthy mindsets in humans, unconsciously erecting a pleasant grin on every willing participant. The bass lines push the “experimental” in experimental bass to the forefront, somehow bringing about unity from what would separately be chaos. The 2nd half of the song feels like an underwater journey in a submarine, taking in all the odd shapes that roam the depths of our world. Just as the sub navigates the bottoms of the sea, this piece floats freely among the other inhabitants of the underground bass community, a bright beacon of nonconformity and an emphasis on individuality and free expression.

‘Over n Out’ caps off Ascension, a goodbye kiss placed gently on the ears, rather than the mouth of a lover. A soft parting, and a reminder that this is only a “see ya later,” you’ll be left thankful that Martin Staaf exists in the same time that you do. One can easily get mesmerized by the atmosphere created, lost in space and time as your mind drifts free of your bodily restraints, held down no longer by the weight of the world and the anxiety that can accompany daily life.

Liquid Stranger is a champion of the people, and a man looked up to by many of the brightest young minds in the industry. This is all without mentioning how absolutely incredible of a musician he is on his own, crafting only what truly resonates with him down to his core. He is a prime example of where hard work can get you, and a shining beacon of defiance against the norm. Ascension is masterfully put together, weaving a complex tale of growth and maturity, something that anyone can relate to. The emphasis on consciousness expansion and working towards your goals proves that he’s truly using his platform for good, only aiming to bring out the absolute best in his rabid fans. The love in the air is thick whenever any of these tracks are rinsed, as that was the original intention when Staaf was pulling them from his own mind. With as much growth as he’s had in the past few years, along with his first ever Wakaan Festival being a smash-hit, this man can steer his intergalactic spaceship in any direction he sees fit, just know that the final destination will be extra extra groovy. Ranging from impassioned synths to dynamic basslines the prodigious Michigan-native continues to reveal a remarkable production aptitude that seems to only further escalate with each release.

Sinking his teeth into one of the freeform bass anthems from the past year, Super Future sets to work weaving an insatiable funk into LSDREAM & Kayoh’s ‘REKT,’ which harnesses the mesmeric groove of a psychedelic jam-fling as an introduction before launching into a mosaic drop with steep peaks of bass and a menagerie of enticing digital fills.

Former head of all things Twonk, Sami Diament, has had arguably one of the strongest rebrands of any electronic artist in the past two years. Trading-off wonky trap stylings for psychedelic thoroughfares, he’s completely shifted his sound focus and fan base. Finding a home and abundant amounts of friendship in his new auditory ecosystem of the Wakaan label, he’s made numerous connections and substantial amounts of growth. One of those friendships came in the form of Michael Petzel, also known by his production name Shlump, regarded for his galaxy-sized extraterrestrial-esque beats. Today, these two modern-day auditory storytellers have come together for a collaborative EP release entitled Universal Wub.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/708779578″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Your first step on this intergalactic journey is the title track ‘Universal Wub,’ a gentle descent into the full body of this work. The vocals “unlocking the secrets of the universe” welcome you into this piece, creating a frequency-laced sense of energetic exploration. The drop gives you the sharp sensation of not floating through space, but rather gangster moon-walking. The attitude and intended aesthetic is readily palpable, with elements from both artists easily felt throughout.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/709270567″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Your next blast into the cosmos is ‘STARCHILD,’ a track sure to you in tune with your inner zodiac sign. Aided by silky smooth vocals from Sarah Hudson that send chills up your spine, this is a track that will surely set your atoms ablaze. The melodic segments of this track mixed with the raw bassiness of the drops gives it this light and dark effect, making the entire piece an adventure from start to finish. The melodies included within are majestic, and all the little accents are fully-fleshed out, each note having inordinate amounts of depth. This track really highlights how well these two artists’ styles jive together, LSDREAM’s melodies popping like a popcorn kettle over the top and Shlump’s patented basslines leaving you completely enraptured.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/709767187″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

‘R.A.V.E.’ sits in the third spot on the EP, a reminder to all fans of electronic music that RAVE is actually an acronym for Radical Audio Visual Experience, with radical audio experience being a fantastic descriptor of this track alone. The build leading into the first drop emits this old school techno vibe with female robot-like vocals repeating “radical audio visual experience” before descending into a primordial ooze of low end, surely forcing all listeners caught within its frequencies to catch a one-way ticket to being fully lost in the sauce. This track is immaculately mastered, with ludicrous amounts of feeling in every second. One can easily get up and groove to this track, or simply lie back and close your eyes taking it all in.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/709768627″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Last on Universal Wub is a living, breathing ‘ORGANISM.’ The opening starts off like a sci-fi thriller, leaving one wondering “what in the world is about to happen to me!?”.The initial drop is so low a boxing referee would call it for going below the belt. A melody that leaves one curious comes quickly after, shifting up the vibe before fully smacking you once more with bass that is more full-bodied than the first drop, incorporating an eccentric hollow horn-like sound that is reminiscent of a tentacled monster from another dimension trumpeting an inconceivable horn. The song drifts off with horns and a light melody, the beast slain and the adventurers alive to fight another day…at least for now.

Universal Wub is a prime showcase of just how well LSDREAM and Shlump’s styles meld together, with Diament’s mind-bending melodies and mystical arrangements perfectly matching with Petzel’s all-too-familiar basslines of absolute destruction. It’s easy to see why these two formed an entire tour around this EP, as anyone that listens to this body of work can only be left to wonder what else these two madman could possibly come up with. If you want to hear these songs rinsed on a proper sound-system, definitely make the trek to the nearest tour stop for intense hi-fi satisfaction.

Sami Diament, aka LSDREAM, has masterfully crafted yet another high-energy heart banger. Rebranding can be a rather difficult task, but the former Twonkfather has done so in a seemingly easy fashion. Maintaining the support of his prior fans, he has done nothing but great things to construct his new image. Solidifying his sound further has directly resulted in an ever expanding fan base, with over 4k members in his Facebook fan group LSDREAMers and over 10k SoundCloud followers. A successful rebrand and a fresh take on life has led to consistent quality content that embraces emotion and forward-thinking bass. With that comes his latest single ‘Spaceship’ in which LSDREAM portrays ethereal vocals and melodies colliding into unearthly 808s.

‘Spaceship’ depicts an expedition through the galaxy that may have you questioning if you are supposed to head bang or cry with your best friend while watching the sunset. Regardless of which you choose, the beauty in layers on this track speaks volumes. Having Meredith Bull provide the alluring vocals that integrate with soothing synths, LSDREAM utilizes heavy horns and abnormal bass to create his perfect recipe. Finding a home within the Wakaan family, he continues to impress and serves an important role in the EDM community by expressing his newfound vision and a mission to spread love. Listen to ‘Spaceship’ below and follow Wakaan and LSDREAM to stay in touch with future projects. Don’t forget to scoop that free download too.

About a year ago, the artist formerly known as Brillz made the change to the LSDREAM alias because his heart was in a different place, before unleashing his VOYAGER LP to critical acclaim. This new found direction seemed to have pleased both bass fans around the world as well as the artist himself, leading him to pursue the project full-time and us to where we are today; at the mercy of his second album, RENEGADES OF LIGHT, out now on Wakaan. Packed with eleven high-energy bangers, this newest project further establishes the LSDREAM sound, this time with the help of many familiar collaborators such as Champagne Drip, KRTL, Kayoh and more.

RENEGADES OF LIGHT is a journey into sonic fluidity that blends just about every genre of electronic music into one beautifully cohesive project. From soothing melodies to earth-rumbling synths, the LP is bound to please all types of listeners through its innate groove and collection of dancefloor-ready bops. If that’s not your cup of tea, dive deeper into the project to find whatever may please you, from wonky heaters to euphoric hits. With most tracks keeping the industrial signature known to LSDREAM, bass fans are in for 46-minute treat when listening to RENEGADES OF LIGHT from front to back. Check it out below and let us know which track is your favourite!

Sami Diament, best known in the scene as Brillz, has taken a sudden turn in his musical production journey- busting out a new project which is nothing like his trap banger persona. LSDREAM is his spiritually insightful, bass-laden moniker featured on Liquid Stranger‘s label Wakaan, and is now preparing to take you on a grand journey through space and one’s own consciousness.

I had to risk losing popularity and people’s acceptance to do something that’s close to my heart. At some point, you have to divorce yourself from the things people want for you and from you, and embrace your own journey.

–LSDREAM

His debut LP, Voyager, will have you exploring a never-before-ventured area within the producer’s vast mind. This has been under wraps for quite some time, and delivers a project that the Brillz identity couldn’t cover alone. The widely diverse array of sounds, from deep dub, to glitch-inspired, to dark & industrial (as a few examples), are all intertwined as a massive cosmic package. From its opening track, ‘Oblivion’ and onwards, the LP makes next to no hesitation jumping right into it and going all in.

The album itself consists of 10 songs, yet a majority of the tracks are over 6 minutes long, making each feel like its own elongated adventure. ‘The Seventh Ray’, its interlude which appears at the halfway point, clocks in at 2:50, making it what is generally considered a standard-length song. Its arpeggiating synths and dreamy, ethereal aura signify the gradual transition from hard-hitting, heavy tunes which are, dare I say, Rezz-like in nature. The entire track gives off a sense of building up towards something grand, almost as if it was intended to be an ongoing build-up in itself, minus the augmenting hype that usually accompanies a standard build-up.

Not too soon after, ‘AWAKE.EXE’ boots up and intrigues the listener with what sounds like a very smooth and soothing rendition of the “Stranger Things” intro. This is before crashing and receiving the error message: “SYSTEM MALFUNCTION“, and unloading a mesmerizing drop to lose yourself in, while waiting for the system to get itself back on track. The flute segment adds an added hint of mystic vibes, before reverting to another glitchy episode to help see the track out.

The music video, a collaboration with Winterhalter, gives the tune that much more of a surreal flair, along with a nicely-timed visualization to delve further into, while being allured by the song.

From then on, the remaining songs become much softer than what has been heard so far, until reaching the 8-and-a-half-minute epic ‘Tiferet’. It’s so serene in nature, that you’ll feel as if you’ve gone beyond the foreseeable cosmos, and reached the heavens – and halfway through, you come into contact with an other-dimensional being, who imparts some yearning words before you continue on your way, until you reach the very end of the musical adventure.

After exploring the inner workings of Sami’s mind, Voyager will leave you with a new appreciation for the artist – especially if you’ve been a die-hard Brillz fan from the beginning. Have a listen to the hour-long LP below, and let it take you to a place of absolute wonder! Here’s to any and all future endeavours for this blooming and promising project.
