The difference in styles between the two artists was not evident to overcome, though. “As I said before, I was going into writing a song for Mike (DAD) kind of nervous just because his voice has a pop-ish kind of sound that I never really worked with before. Most of my stuff being fairly dark, I went into it as open as possible and just let the ideas flow,” Lucchii continues. “About a week later, I had a pretty awesome idea going and shot it Mike’s way. He loved it. Upon finishing the magic on his end, he let me know that he had to transpose the song up around 4 semitones due to his voice not being able to hit that low of a register. Unfortunately, with drops written and most of the instrumental already mixed, it was a nearly impossible change for me to make on my end. I assured him in his nervousness that we would not waste the amazing performance he delivered. I ended up starting new and writing around his vocals and behold, ‘Chøsen Ønes,’” Lucchii’s latest that we are ecstatic to premiere today, out now on Music High Court.

Continuing to build on his newfound sound, the Las Vegas-based producer keeps his momentum from ‘Legacy‘ and ‘Løst‘ alive with ‘Chøsen Ønes.’ The experienced sound designer pushed his boundaries to new limits with this track, wrapping DAD’s poignant lyrics in an ethereal soundscape so versatile that the direction of the impending drop is unknown until it hits. When it does, listeners are thrown into limbo, with dark synths and undertones contrasted by the upbeat vocal chops and punchy percussion.

What’s a Lucchii? Tell us about the origins of the Lucchii project.

I get this question a lot and honestly, the way I identify with it is you never really know what a Lucchii is – just the same as sometimes not always knowing yourself the way you think/want to. It’s a symbol of that complex inner-self that you never truly understand, but as a creative – makes you exactly who you are.

When did you know you wanted to commit to making music full-time?

I’ve been through a ton in the past 5 or so years of my life and a lot of the things I’ve dealt with and pushed passed have continued to point me in this direction. I’ve been full time with music for just under 3 years now – producing for another 3 before that, just not really understanding where to take it that early on.

I’d say the moment I realized it was after the way my ‘Panda’ remix that I released in early 2016 resonated in the community. I had never really gotten ‘plays’ on a track or reached out to by producers or fans prior to that. Within a month my inboxes were slammed and the track had somehow ended up with 50k plays and got a write up on Billboard.com. I remember early on it was one of the most incredible feelings to see something I created get recognition after working so hard for so long. It truly felt like the start of something amazing.

How did you enjoy living in LA? 

Ah, what a topic. LA was interesting. I’ll start by saying I do not live there anymore, I just recently relocated again to Las Vegas and I’m loving it here thus far. Been really refreshing.

I’ll never take away anything from Los Angeles. Moving there 2 years ago was really one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. I’ve had almost all the true growth in my career there. I became a better producer there. I’ll always love it there. However, loving it somewhere and living somewhere are very different. Growing up has taught me that. I’ve become extremely introverted in the past few years and sometimes it just felt like too much out there. A lot of fake interactions. A feeling of everyone being extremely selfish and always trying to get something from you no matter where you go. Drugs everywhere. It’s part of fitting in. All in all, just wasn’t a place to call ‘home’ for me personally, but I love it with all my heart and look forward to continue working there throughout my career.

My most concise approach is definitely when I’m just creating my own work with no one in mind besides myself in that moment.

Along with a ton of originals, you’ve done your fair share of collaborations with some super talented artists. How does your approach differ when making a solo track versus when working with others?

The approach is different based on a lot of factors honestly. My most concise approach is definitely when I’m just creating my own work with no one in mind besides myself in that moment. I tend to not think as much. I just get in a certain mood and go until I can’t anymore.

When collaborating, sometimes you’re creating specifically to benefit someone’s skill set. Sometimes you’re stuck on an idea and just know a certain producer you have in mind could do something dope with it. My favorite personally and what I hope to do tons more of in the next few years is being in a studio setting with other talented individuals and just shooting the shit, seeing what sticks and then once something sticks – running with it. Stefan and I did this together with our new one ‘Legacy’ that dropped recently. It was an incredibly organic and enjoyable experience writing that tune together.

You’ve also displayed your versatility repeatedly, recently with your dynamic remix for Zeds Dead and 1000 Volts and your newest release, ‘Legacy’. How does your approach to making a track differ when you’re making a purely instrumental banger compared to a vocal-driven track like ‘Legacy’?

This is something I have been working on a lot in 2018. I feel I have a few different styles. I experimented a ton this year working to try and present that in the most effective ways possible, whilst still being 100% happy in the studio. That’s by far the most important thing in my opinion.

With the Zed’s Dead & 1000 Volts remix I had a really tight deadline. I tend to work well under pressure cause I don’t overthink as much as my normal self would. I went into it wanting to create a really intense atmosphere that was totally different than the original hip-hop sort of vibe. Honestly when it comes to drops though, I just experiment over and over. I design in serum. I resample. Mangle audio. Post process it to death. Resample again. You get the point. This is basically my method regardless the style of record – I just approach it from a different perspective.

‘Legacy’ was an incredible experience to create. Stefan is one of my closest friends that I had made in LA. We were hanging out for almost 2 years before we finally got together on a tune and I think that’s why we nailed it first try. We waited and let the friendship bud first. The process was so smooth, real and organic. I started the production up, he started writing. I remember that first moment we got together and finally started putting all the pieces together and we just started geeking out. He will continue to be in my sound for years to come, that’s for sure.

I feel right now is the best time for bass music. It’s truthfully INSANE how much talent there is out there. Pushing boundaries is something I will always respect.

As a trendsetter in bass music, you’re consistently pushing it to new boundaries. Where do you think bass music is heading in the next couple of years?

Honestly, I feel right now is the best time for bass music. It’s truthfully INSANE how much talent there is out there. Pushing boundaries is something I will always respect. It goes much further with me than just a good mix down of a basic cookie-cut record would or a really well designed bass lead patch that we have all heard 100 times would. That’s why I feel bass music is in such a good place right now though. The stuff I’m hearing these days just shows how much producers are stepping out of the box and I love it.

What needs to stay in 2018?

Honestly, I can’t stand riddim so let’s go with that :)

& just to clarify, there are definitely producers who do it really well. I’m referring more towards the most simplistic forms of it. There’s a lot of it that I listen to on my feed that just comes off pure lazy and lacking any creativity. Seems like it’s so forced and that’s honestly super sad being that the creative process is the most fun in my opinion.

This year has been huge for you in terms of releases. What’s in store for 2019? How do you plan on topping 2018?

I’m not gonna tell too much cause part of my brand is keeping everything under the wraps, but it’s already getting topped :) very blessed to be in this position and I look forward to the team growing even more in 2019.

What can we expect from the guest mix?

I kept it short cause like I said, secretive :) only one unreleased in there and it was an official remix I did for a Shaun Frank & Ultra Records pack that fell through. Basically, I included a bunch of upcoming producers I support frequently, some exclusive live edits of mine, and of course ‘Legacy’ at the end. I gave a brief vibe of what to expect for a Lucchii set. Hope you guys enjoy it and thank you for all the support this year. Cheers to a big 2019 for all of us <3

The powerful lyrics “We don’t like to stay inside the borderlines / We go where we want” are a perfect representation of Lucchii as a producer, and of ‘Legacy’ in particular. A minimal soundscape is accentuated by Stefan Crane’s appeasing vocals in the introduction. Despite the calm beginning, Lucchii contrasts it with a wonky trap drop without disrupting the flow of the track. Cutting between comforting sounds and rugged bass with ease, ‘Legacy’ is another prime example of Lucchii’s musical prowess.
