Silva & Luude Flip Calvin Harris’ Classic ‘You Used To Hold Me’

Calvin Harris’ ‘You Used To Hold Me’ is a certified classic. Coming off his sophomore album Ready For The Weekend, the track was a standout smash alongside hits like ‘Flashback,’ ‘The Rain,’ & ‘Dance wiv Me.’ Combining emotional and catchy vocals with a driving electro-house beat made it a mainstay at festivals and in DJ sets. Released at a pivotal time when electronic music was beginning its ascent into the mainstream, this track and Calvin Harris hold a special place in my heart for helping me fall in love with the scene. Anytime the song plays it’s pure nostalgia. So when Silva hit me up and said he had a DnB flip with Luude on the way I was elated.

Taking on such an iconic record is no easy feat but the pair do it with the utmost tact and success. Still driven by Calvin’s powerful vocals, Silva and Luude retain all the key elements that made the original so special. Nothing is overdone but it still sounds unmistakeably fresh. I wasn’t in the market for a DnB edit of ‘You Used To Hold Me’ but now that’s it here, I don’t want to imagine a world without it. The drums will have you shuffling with a renewed vigor as you sing along and get lost in the feels. Blast this on repeat, I certainly have been.

Dark, Heavy Bass in LUUDE’s Latest Single ‘Omen’

Native to Perth, Australia, Christian Benson, more commonly known as LUUDE, has slowly woven his influence into the underground trap and bass scene for nearly three years. A treasure trove of flips isolated to his ‘2.0‘ account act as the stable foundation which has supported the young Aussie’s quick rise to fame, while his more recent venture into solo releases has revealed fierce individuality and a desire to push the boundaries of his creative style.

A familiar tune to loyal LUUDE fans, his latest single ‘Omen‘ has been teased in guest mixes and setlists dating as far back as 2017. The complete track was finally unleashed this past week, with a free download, and is a brilliant depiction of Christian’s ability to experiment with a deeper, grimier cyberpunk style, yet maintain his innovative sound complexity.

A torrent of pounding, drowned out drums, pierced with a metallic ringing suddenly break into a dark wave of synths, laced carefully with ominous, resonating chanting. A build, reminiscent of a hydraulics system, breaks into a slowed-down, tuned-out sample from the chorus of Kanye West‘s ‘Black Skinhead‘, before launching into a grimy, funky tempo of cumbersome bass notes. A brief intermission, lined with echoing chants leads into the submerged Kanye chorus and an elated buildup, before dropping once again into an assault of dark bass.

‘Omen’ is an excellent change of pace, exhibiting a much more bass-heavy drop, while still demonstrating meticulous sound design in the buildup and a dash of familiarity courtesy of Ye. With the long-anticipated Dark Room Tour underway, I expect this to be the first of many hard-hitting releases from LUUDE in the coming year.

LUUDE Teams Up With Example & Georgi Kay For ‘Sink Or Swim’

Perth-based producer LUUDE is back with his biggest release to date. Teaming up with Example and Georgi Kay, the trio craft a powerful love song with some exciting twists and turns. Example steals the focus early on with a verse that pulls you in. Georgi Kay adds a poppy vibe with vocals as the beat builds. The track hits its peak with the drop; a wildly bent banjo sound that’s paired with deep bass. It’s quite unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. While LUUDE could’ve dropped it into a typical future bass section with some saw chords, he instead opted to try something imaginative and that’s what makes ‘Sink or Swim’ so special. Stream below.

Enschway & LUUDE Murdered This RL Grime Remix

Last week RL Grime announced his return with a massive new single entitled ‘Reims’. The track packed some epic builds and triumphant drops but I personally felt it lacking the grittiness I’ve come to expect from RL. Thankfully it seems that Aussie producers LUUDE and Enschway may have felt the same as they’ve come through with a fresh rework just days after its release. While the opening packs a similarly grande feel, the first drop dives off a cliff into the dark depths of the weird and unknown. The duo bring it back once again building for an even more massive finale. Check the remix and original below and let us know which you prefer. Oh and don’t forget to grab that free download.

The use of exotic vocal samples give this one an instant identifiability while providing a perfect contrast for the sinister sounds. Luude flips Fetty Wap’s ‘679’

Ever since I heard ‘Timezone’ by Enschway and Luude, I knew Luude was going to be someone to look out for, and I was not wrong. In this flip of Fetty Wap’s popular banger ‘679’ Luude keeps the track catchy and upbeat in the beginning with some nice synth melodies sprinkled in. But the real story is in the drop. The drop is so heavy but still interesting and complex. This is something I will be playing out for a while. I am very excited for more Luude flips in the future.
