Machinedrum‘s majestic power of production has always brought his stories to life. Experiencing his inner imagination in the fullest through whimsical techniques, organic vision, and gorgeous attention to detail. Representing different emotions and times within each piece. Constructing a timeless garden of sound. A discogaphy worth going through from start to finish. And now, he’s gifted us yet again with an absolute flower of peace. Picked from a glistening garden to fill your heart and soul. Together with the iconic, KUČKA, ‘VIOLET’ showcases why these two make such a stunning team of creatives, and why they’re some of the best in the game.

Taken from his upcoming EP, 4#TRAX, this song sets the tone completely and really represents how adaptable his style can be. The soft yet powerful melodic structure combined with KUČKA’s stellar vocals really makes your hearts flutter and sing with glee and joy. The sad yet empowering feeling throughout gives you a sense of comfort and inspiration. Adding that gentle guitar to the overall equation creates such a smooth layer of bliss and harmony. Taking your breath away. Everything about this work of art is poetic and does both of their unique styles justice when combined.

From the arrangement, pacing, and storytelling, it’s by far one of their best works to date. Anything KUČKA touches turns into a set of diamonds. Bravo to them both. We’re stoked to hear the rest of the EP! So make sure to show your support by streaming ‘VIOLET’ everywhere via Ninja Tune!

When you take a look back at the past two decades of electronic music, few names have been able to consistently push the boundaries of production like North Carolina native and Full Sail alum, Machinedrum. Since his first release as Machinedrum in 2001, the veteran producer has started countless side aliases. More recently one of these side projects with fellow producer Jimmy Edgar, J-E-T-S, has been on a roll with a EP at the tail-end of 2019 and their massive LP ZOOSPA. Since then Machinedrum has slowly been rolling out singles from what is set to be one of the seasoned producer’s most complete solo projects yet. We’ve come to love Machinedrum for his eccentric and creative takes on electronic music, refusing to be within the confines of genres, Machinedrum has perfected the art of blending endless different styles and genres into one cohesive project. If somehow you’ve been living under a rock for the past nineteen years and this is your first Machinedrum experience, this project truly encapsulates what the Machinedrum project is all about.

A View of U is in one sentence an ethereal electronic listening experience. Pulling influences from hip-hop, drum and bass, house, and ambient, Machinedrum is able to paint a colorful soundscape that displays a range of emotions and impressive production skills. Starting off strong with ‘The Relic’, the soulful vocals of Rochelle Jordan and the hectic percussion elements all do their job in setting the tone for the rest of the track. In addition to these elements, these plucky synths come into the mix to provide the melody in the intro before being replaced by these grime low-end lead synths in the groovy half-time drop section.

Another stand out from this project has to be ‘Kane Train’ with master lyricist Freddie Gibbs. On this track, Machinedrum flexes his insane rap production ability. The veteran is no stranger to the hip-hop world, with production credits for the likes of Theophilus London and Azealia Banks. So it’s no surprise to see Machinedrum absolutely snap of this one. Starting off with a collection of horns that are soon joined by these masterful percussion elements. Freddie’s voice perfectly complements this record with his syncopated flows.

One more stand out we had to mention is the massive collaboration with legendary drum and bass producer, Sub Focus. ‘1000 Miles’ is an emotional listening experience that is sure to have you feeling some type of way. Beginning with these angelic vocals and heavily delayed production elements provide the perfect ambient intro to this emotional drum and bass ballad. These beautiful chords are added to provide the harmony needed to properly fill out this melodic intro. Soon after, all elements are discarded in the build, in favor of this soulful piano melody before quickly being joined by a combination of masterful percussion elements and insane sound-design showcased in the breaks.

At the very beginning of this crazy year, two titans in their respective corners of bass music joined forces to give us the Berry Patch EP, a collection of eclectic DnB records full of fresh and exciting sounds and rhythms. The two titans in question are of course Holly, the seasoned beat-prodigy hailing from Portugal, and the drum and bass legend himself, Machinedrum. The later is no stranger to collaboration projects, as 2019 marked a massive year for his J.E.T.S. project with Jimmy Edgar. After another successful collaboration project with Holly, the two have blessed us yet again with a collection of remixes from some of their peers with the Berry Patch: Blended EP.

To start we have Halogenix’s rendition of the hectic DnB record ‘Berry Patch,’ which begins with the familiar melody and vocal sample from the original while incorporating these huge sweeping synths in the build-up. When we reach the drop, those abrasive synths are completely stripped back to reveal pulsating subs that carry the grove between these spazzy high-pitched tones in the breaks.

Moving on we have IMANU’s glitchy take on ‘Berry Patch,’ which is full of these glitchy and majestic high-end tones combined with these deep trembling subs in the build-up. When the tension his finally released in the drop, all these elements are joined by the original vocal sample, but only this time its infinitely looped, giving this track a hypnotic field to it.

Next up, Two FUX favorites take center stage with Craze and DJ Ride’s take on ‘Yangmei.’ The track starts on the melodic side, with a liquid inspired intro and build-up before the energy is quickly turned all the way up. After a relaxed build-up, the drop offers a welcome contrast, with its gritty synths and stripped Jump-up influenced drum pattern. The two even bless up with some deep wubs on the last drop, which offers a hip-hop-influenced half-time switch-up.

Next in line is a name that has been taking the underground by storm recently, Noer the Boy, and his rendition of ‘Yangmei.’ We begin with a minimal intro and build-up, that leads to this trapped-out 808 heavy beat accompanied by some of the nastiest sound design you’ll find on the market right now.

Following this, we have Posij and Former’s take on ‘Goji,’ which offers an emotional and thoughtful breakbeat rendition of Goji. This track is filled with unconventional rhythms and creative percussion elements combined to create this wonderful soundscape.

Wrapping up this remix EP we have Thys’s from Noisia version of ‘Goji’. The DnB legend manages to turn an aggressive record, into one full of beautiful melodies, ambient synths, and emotion. This remix is truly a one-of-a-kind masterpiece and showcases Thys’s world-class talent as a songwriter. Make sure you check out the whole thing down below if you haven’t already!

What do you get when two staple names in bass music team up? You get a one of kind sound that breaks the barriers of genres altogether. The Berry Patch EP sees Machinedrum take his supersonic sounds and combines them with Holly’s hip-hop and trap-influenced production to create something truly unique and fresh.

Starting with the title track, the duo comes out the gate strong with a mesmerizing piano melody which is then faded out to make room to a pulsating lead synth that’s combined with the constant drums drives the rhythm throughout.

Moving on we have ‘Yangmei,’ which begins with a tantalizing drum pattern that carries the groove of the first minute, all the while masterfully crafted ambient synths in the back build the tension. Approaching one minute we are thrown into what seems like an infinite drum loop which adds the beautifully spastic nature of this track. Perhaps what’s most impressive in this track is the constant change in tonality and energy throughout the track.

After this, we have ‘Bramble’, a captivating ambient track, with some of the craziest textures you’ve ever heard. For the full effect on this one, we recommend listening with some quality headphones or nice speakers.

Finishing off strong with ‘Goji,’ we have a tension building melody introduced with some off-the-wall bongo percussion. Throughout the track, these percussion elements are manipulated and sometimes substituted to create a rhythm that is unmatched by anything out right now. Not to mention the high pitched lead synth is straight outta a blaster from Star Wars.

Stream Berry Patch everywhere if you haven’t already!

For the second instalment of our new Bass Boost series, I’d like to put the spotlight on a specific producer. Travis Stewart, better known as Machinedrum is a huge underground force. Currently residing in Berlin, Machinedrum’s music does not fit neatly into any genre. Though much of his music walks a line between jungle, footwork and drum and bass, the influences and styles drawn upon do not stop there. Boasting a discography that is as long as it is varied, Stewart is a symbol for innovation, creativity and exploration in the world of electronic music. Touching on everything from hip hop to house to R&B and FAR beyond, Machinedrum and various other projects he is involved in accomplish their goal of being both explorative and accessible, and further contribute to the legacy of this hardworking and versatile producer.

I found out about Machinedrum around 2012 when I came across DDD (better known to some as the beat behind Azealia Banks’ 1991), a funky throwback to Detroit-style house music. I love this track for how catchy it is, and how fat the sub drop is around the 2:20 mark. After hearing this, I got my hands on Machinedrum’s SXLND EP and quickly realized that I had found something unique; creative, dark and funky music that uses aspects of any genre that has something to contribute while at the same time refusing to fully submit to the rules or practices of those same genres. The deeper I dug, the more material I found; at times wondering if it was actually one person making all this music.

In the last few years, Stewart has truly found his sound. Releasing a series of EPs leading up to a full album entitled Vapor City in 2014, Machinedrum used the diverse Ninja Tune label to showcase his varied taste and forward-thinking approach to music. This series also led to a trio of Vapor City Boiler Room Sessions in New York, London and Berlin, all featuring Machinedrum, as well as a collection of friends and collaborators including side projects such as JETS with Jimmy Edgar, Dream Continuum with Om Unit, and Sepalcure with Braille (aka Praveen Sharma). Vapor City is a great place to start for anyone looking to see what Machinedrum has to offer, but all of the aforementioned collaborations and Boiler Room sessions are essential listening. Each project has its own extremely unique voice and cretive direction while Stewarts influence is constantly heard. Machinedrum is an extremely talented musician whose big-picture influence on dance music, electronic music, and music in general still remains to be seen as many more years of exploration and high-bpm releases are surely to come.
